Chapter 5 - First day of classes

The next morning at breakfast the time schedules were handed out to the students. The first class of the day was Gryffindor and Ravenclaw joined Transfiguration. The first years all gathered in a group and headed up the steps together. On the way up to Professor McGonagall's classroom the group of first years got lost multiple times and got stuck on several different sets of staircases.

"I swear it wasn't this hard to get there last night." Remus complained to James.

"That's because we were led by someone who knows the castle last night." James told him.

"You two were out at night?" Lily asked from where she was walking behind them.

"Uhm…" James froze.

"Yes, we were and I would not recommend it." Remus answered.

"Why?" Lily asked.

"There's this freaky cat." Remus explained, "And an even freakier owner."

"Oh…" Lily said

"Shouldn't we have turned left at that portrait?" Sirius came up to the trio and pointed to a rather odd painting of an old wizard in a bunny costume.

"I do recall that portrait from last night, yes." Remus answered.

They turned back and headed up another corridor. The group of first years traveled up another few sets of stairs, down a bunch of hallways until they finally reached the fifth floor on which Professor McGonanagall's classroom was located.

"Finally, there you are!" Professor McGonagall called out to the group, "Class started a couple of minutes ago." she told them and she ushered them inside. "Welcome to your first Transfiguration lesson. Here you will learn how to transform one thing into another and it is a skill that will come in quite handy. One day you might even be able to do this, although you are not going to learn this in school." A second later a cat was standing in the place where Professor McGonagall had stood before. The class gasped in surprise and then burst out into applause at this amazing trick.

"We need to learn how to do that!" Sirius told James.

"Definitely!" he replied.

"Now, today we're going to start with something simple." Professor McGonagall back in her human form said. She flicked her wand and apples appeared on the students desks, "Now, turn to page seven on which you will find the theory behind turning one fruit into a different one. You'll find the incantation on the next page. I want you all to try and turn your apple into a peach."

The class opened their textbooks and started reading. A while later the class was in chaos as every student in class flicked their wands and muttered, "mutatio fructum". By the end of the period only one student had been able to turn their apple into a peach. "Well done mister Potter. Ten points to Gryffindor. Your homework for tonight is to practice this incantation. I hope to see improvement in the next period."

The next class was Ravenclaw and Gryffindor joined Charms, so the group gathered and walked in a bundle to Professor Flitwick's classroom on the other side of the fifth floor. They entered the classroom and took their seats.

"Welcome, welcome! I'm Professor Flitwick and I'm going to be your Charms professor for hopefully the next seven years. Now, I might be small in stature but don't think that I am not an intimidating teacher. No, I will be teaching you one of the most important subjects you will ever take." He took out his wand, gave it a flick and the next second a feather was lying in front of every student, "We're going to start with something simple. 'Wingardium Leviosa'," his feather floated into the air, "The levitation charm is an easy one but it could save your life someday. In order to do this spell you have to swish" he twirled his wand, "and flick" he flicked his wand, "your wand while pronouncing the incantation correctly. You may start."

The class jumped into the assignment and ten minutes in the Ravenclaw twins, Chloé and Zoé Stark managed to levitate their feathers. "Well done girls! Ten points each." They beamed at each other and the class continued working on their incantation. The next person to manage the levitation charm was Lily Evans. She too was rewarded with ten points for her house. By the end of the period most of the students in class had managed to levitate their feather at least a few inches above the table.

The next class on the Gryffindor schedule was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Then it was Herbology and finally Lunch. Lily and Severus met up at the door of the Great Hall. " How has your day been?" Lily asked.

"Really exciting actually. Although, I can't wait for Potions." Severus replied.

"Oh, don't we have that one together?" Lily asked.

"Yes we do." Severus said.

"Save me a seat?" Lily asked.

"Definitely!" Severus smiled.

They separated and ate lunch at their respective tables. Afterwards they joined up again and headed outside to the grounds for Gryffindor and Slytherin joined Flying lessons. Madam Hooch was already waiting for them and they lined up behind the brooms.

"Welcome to your first flying lesson." Madam Hooch said.

"This is going to be easy." James told Sirius, "I've been flying since I was three."

"Cool!" Sirius replied, "My parents were never really keen on me flying around the house."

"Stand next to your broom, hold out your hand and say 'Up!'," Madam Hooch instructed the class.

"Up!" the class shouted. James' broom flew into his hand on the first command. Sirius was the second one in the class to manage getting his broom in his hand and from there more and more students managed it.

"Madam Hooch!" James raised his hand, "When are we going to start flying?"

"Not today mister Potter. First everyone needs to be able to summon their broomstick and then we're going to go over safety in take off, en route and landing before we start taking off and levitating above the ground for a few seconds. Truth be told, we're not really going to start flying until possibly after Christmas." she replied

The class went on until finally they were dismissed and the group headed down to potions.

"Evans, who's your friend?" James called towards them.

"Oh, James, this is Severus." Lily introduced the two.

"Okay, but why are you hanging out with a Slytherin? They're our rivals." James said.

"Because he's my friend." Lily replied.

"But you can make new friends." Sirius joined in the conversation, "Ones who are in the same house as you."

"Guys, I think it's good that Lily has friends who aren't in our house." Remus joined in.

"Remus, who's side are you on?" James asked.

"I'll let you guys sort this out. Come on Severus." Lily said.

"Oh, I am not getting in the middle of this." Kingsley added as he followed Lily and passed his four roommates.
