Chapter 42
Kara had kept her gaze away from Morgana's face and focused on helping her dress, she was thankful that after her corset she could pretty much manage by herself, though the blonde knew that Morgana kept glancing at her,
Kara's cheeks must have looked scarlet with the amount of heat flushing through them, she took to looking out of the window, down onto the courtyard of Camelot, seeing the place where she had met Gwen as she had gotten water for Gaius, it seemed like such a long time ago now
She thought of home, she hoped that Lena and Alex were okay, she knew that they didn't always get along, both being independent women. She didn't know how long she had to complete the task that she had been set, although the more she thought about, was her task not complete yet.
Secure Camelot's future
She sighed, Camelot was still under threat from Helios, Kara couldn't go home just yet
Something touched her arm, making her jump
Morgana's eyes watched her
"What's wrong?" she asked
Kara noticed that she was fully dressed now, she took a breath and nodded
"I'm fine" she lied "Just thinking about what comes next"
Morgana leaned against the opposite side of the window, her eyes wandering to the outside world
"Helios is ruthless" she began, her voice small "He will not stop until Camelot is burning" her eyes distant and sad
Kara reached out, taking her hand, comforting her
"I can't promise that everything will be okay, but I'm gonna stand by you" Kara gave her a small smile, rubbing her thumb over her knuckle
Morgana's eyes watched their hands for a moment, her brows coming together in a frown, she squeezed Kara's hand before pulling it away from hers, there was a moment of pain in her eyes before she straightened, she didn't reconnect their gaze, instead she left and greeted Arthur
Kara stood there for a moment watching the door way, a wave of guilt flooding through her, she took a deep breath before moving to Morgana's main room
Her and Arthur were standing there
"Why wouldn't you tell me?" he asked, his voice strained as he tried to keep it low so the guards would not hear him "Before everything"
Morgana exhaled, choosing to look at the stone floor beneath her feet
"I thought at the time that it was you that had order him to do it" her voice was barely audible
"What?" he exclaimed
"Arthur please" she tried to calm him "I was afraid, I thought like Uther you had turned against me"
Arthur turned away pacing the floor
"I would never" he started but couldn't find the words, he stopped his pacing and faced Morgana
"We're family" it sounded like it was hard for him to say the word
A long moment of silence past between them, Kara stood back from them feeling as though she shouldn't be here for this, like she was intruding in a private moment
Arthur shook his head, his voice returning to normal
"I had no idea that he had done this to you" he crossed his arms over his chest "I have no idea what to even do with him"
Morgana tensed slightly, it didn't go unnoticed
"What would you do with him?" Arthur asked
Morgana met his steady gaze, not that long ago she would want his head, but now standing in Camelot in front of her half-brother who had spared her and allowed her to even stay in her old room, feeling Kara's presence behind her, the blonde had taught her a lot of things and made her realise more things within herself, things she had forgotten, like mercy
"He was trying to protect his King and friend" Morgana stared into Arthur's blue eyes "I've let my anger rule me for too long"
Arthur studied her for a moment "To be truthful, I was not expecting that answer"
"Me neither" the sorceress admitted, she glanced back to Kara "But someone has helped me to change my views"
Arthur looked to Kara as well as she stood back in the corner of the room, the blonde blushed a little and gave a small smile, her heart filled with pride at Morgana's change of heart
"Very well" Arthur looked between the pair again, his eyes seeing the connection between them "I will leave the two of you, I have to see to the castle's defences"
"Are we prepared for an attack?" Morgana asked
Arthur shrugged "It is difficult to say, against anyone else yes, but Helios is something else entirely"
"I remember that he uses fire, he has oil arrows to burn down wooden defences"
The king nodded "I will take that into account, thank you" he bowed slightly to Kara before leaving
Kara stood there for a moment watching Morgana, her shoulders slumped slightly, she moved slowly across her room and sat on the edge of her bed, fiddling with her own hands
Kara stood motionless for a second, before sitting down next to Morgana
"What are you thinking about?" she asked, nudging Morgana's shoulder softly
"I fear that Arthur would not allow me to use my magic to help protect Camelot" she looked at her open palms "But it may be the only way to save us all"
The blonde nodded slowly
"Helios wanted to use me as a weapon, maybe that is all I am good for"
Kara looked up in shock at Morgana's words
"No" she said adamantly "You are so much more than your magic" Kara gripped her hand, stopping them from fidgeting
Morgana didn't move
"You are a strong and caring woman, you have faced so much adversity and you have learnt to forgive" the blonde shifted so now her body faced Morgana "You took the first step to reunite with your family and you chose to protect this kingdom even though it could have meant your death"
Tearful green eyes looked up to Kara, Morgana's gaze had Kara's stomach twisting in knots, the sorceress started to lean in closer to the blonde, their faces inches apart and getting closer by the second
Kara gulped but found she could not pull away
Morgana stopped, something shifting in her eyes, guilt, she exhaled, closing her eyes before resting her head on Kara's shoulder
A wave of what Kara could only explain as relief flooded her, but there was also something else, something she could not admit even to herself.
She wrapped her arms around Morgana, giving the woman comfort
