Chapter 40 – To be honest
Makatza had tightened her collar around her waist despite Fenris' mention that she should just let him strap it to a horse, she didn't care, she liked it. Fenris had taken to carrying the sling made from Garrett's cloak while Hawke carried Makatza through the woods. They had taken a different route to the original so she didn't have to see the dead again, she didn't like the fact that she still had dried blood on her skin and hair. Walking on two legs wasn't easy and she was having a little trouble with balance now that her tail was gone, it shocked her how easily she was able to adjust to having four paws. She was happy just to lose the feeling that she should be wearing four bras, let alone anything else. 'I can walk,' she said flicking Garrett around the ear as he carried her on his back.
'You tried, you fell. I want to get you back before I'm eaten by Isabela,' he laughs.
'Actually... I was wondering if you wouldn't mind taking me to the Dalish camp,' she said softly. The light was hurting her eyes and her sense of hearing and smell was still sensitive, she didn't think that she would be able to take the city particularly well. 'I want to see my father,' she admits.
Garrett looks back at her and nods, 'if that's what you want, of course. I mean, you can't stay there too long or Isabela and Aveline will literally drag you back. Not to mention my mother,' he laughs. 'Would a couple days be okay?'
'That would be wonderful,' Makatza says thanking him with a squeeze. She looks over at Fenris who was waggling a finger a pup who was attempting to chew the sling. She stifled a giggle and smiled as she watched him play with the young ones. Bubble raced ahead back and forth until he was tired. 'Thank you for not freaking out about this whole wolf thing with Merrill,' she said as she played with a strand of Hawke's hair, plaiting it in amusement.
'Well, I've decided not to give her that tool and I've told her that she's not to attempt any magic with it while you're near,' he sighs. 'Sometimes she makes it so hard to be a friend,' he mutters in annoyance. Makatza agrees with a hum as they finally reach the clearing where they had tied the horses, she's put down gently and far enough away from the horses not to feel a little frightened. Fenris gently takes off the sling and gives it to Makatza, she puts it down and she encourages the pups to go onto the grass and relieve themselves with a little growl.
'Talking to animals now?' Fenris teases ever so lightly as he rolls his shoulders.
Makatza growls at him playfully and smirks, 'you're one to talk,' she retorts gently nudging a pup that was trying to eat her toes. Fenris chuckles as he walks closer to her and stands next to her as they watch the puppies.
'Spending time with the Dalish?' He asks as he resisted the urge to put his arm around her waist. The impulse alone was enough to make him feel on edge, he was pretty sure that he never felt the urge to offer physical contact in such a way before. Makatza smiles brightly at him and then notices that his other arm was held at an awkward angle.
'May I?' She says as she takes his hand and looks at the wound, her eyes filling up with tears. 'Oh god, I'm sorry,' she whispered as she motioned for his knife that was in the hem of his leggings. He gave her the dagger and couldn't help but swear under his breath as she attempted to gently removed the stitches so she could heal him. 'I know you say you've forgiven me but I feel really guilty about it-'
'Katza,' he says bluntly as he makes her look at him lifting her head with a index finger under her chin, his thumb almost resting against the base of her lip. 'Do not be sorry, you are forgiven,' he says softly. 'It was an accident and I hold no resentment towards you,' he assures as he smiles at her. The tears in her eyes glitter and she blinks making a one fall, he pauses for a moment before tenderly wiping it away with the side of his finger.
'Thank you,' she says her voice choked with emotion and she clears her throat smiling at him brilliantly wiping her cheek with the back of her wrist before returning to the task at hand. 'So, um,' she said as she gave him back the dagger and began to heal his arm, pulling out each stitch as it came. For the moment she had numbed his skin so it shouldn't hurt too much. 'Yeah, I'm going to ry and get to know my father a bit better and that side my heritage. If you wanted... you could... well... you could join me... at the Dalish camp,' she said not making eye contact. 'If you um, if you wanted to get out the city... maybe... for a couple days,' she stops and starts in her sentence and he could practically feel her embarrassment. 'It would help with the puppies and I would like having a friendly face about-'
'Do you wish for me to join you?' He asks with a light tinge of teasing seeing her ears flush red. She bites her lip and he suddenly wished for a jolt of pain to bring him back to Thedas instead of the route that his mind was hurtling towards.
Makatza finished healing and inspected the scar, it was noticeable if you knew what you were looking for. 'Well, yes,' she said bluntly unable to refuse her inner wolf's imprint on him. 'Yes, I would like you to accompany me,' she shrugged a shoulder. 'It's not like we'd be sharing a tent or anything,' she said in a way that made Fenris' fingers twitch; it was suggestive and triggered an impulsivity that he thought didn't exist. He murdered that thought as he watched her pick up her puppies and go over to where Garrett was waiting. 'So Fenris is going to come with me to the Dalish camp,' she said simply to her cousin who raised a brow and smirked.
'That'll please Uncle no doubt,' he chuckles.
'He'll have to learn to live with my friends sooner or later,' Makatza laughs. 'Who knows, one day I might actually marry,' she smiles as she give Garrett the pups to put in the sling. She breathes in heavily and looks at the horse. I can do this, it's just a tall horse. I am a wolf! Well, partly! Wolves aren't scared of anything... except the idea of being an Alpha, the possibility that I might actually go into heat and a rather attractive elf- okay that's not helping, she screamed at herself mentally. 'Okay here goes nothing,' she said as she pulled herself up into the saddle holding on for dear life as the horse moves back and forth a step at the weight change.
Garrett passes her the pups and laughs. 'Well done,' he says mounting behind her and waiting for Fenris to get onto his horse. Bubble paced in front eager to be off. 'As for marriage, if they can survive the grouch you call a father you'll be fine. This could be Fenris' first test,' he teases as he encourages the horse to move.
'His first what...?!' She said before panicking and grabbing the sling tightly and the pommel. Her question was lost to the wind as the horse moved. 'Oh Christ, I'm never going to be used to this damn thing,' she said as she forced herself to look at her puppies who were content enough to fall asleep. Bubble ran next to them experienced enough around horses not to be trodden on as they followed the track. Makatza began to wish that she was wearing some form of underwear, the tunic was long enough to cover her backside but she was starting to feel a little uncomfortable, not to mention that her chest was barely pinned down by the weight of the sling. She was going to be sore in the morning. They made it to the Dalish camp in good time and it was only just hitting mid morning when Makatza awkwardly slid off the saddle. They walked up to the perimeter and were greeted warmly.
Marethari walked over as she saw them and smiled proudly, 'ah child, you've managed to return to your form. Well done,' she praises.
'Thank you, I didn't do it on purpose, it kind of just wore off,' Makatza explained. They spoke about what happened and Makatza was led to a tent so that she could get changed into proper clothing and her father was made aware that she was here. Silvanus acted like a small lad at the news that she was back to her normal self and hugged Garrett and even grabbed Fenris in the moment of joy. Makatza on the other hand was helped by a younger woman to wash the grime and blood off of her skin and hair before being given a proper change of clothing and she grabbed a tunic for Garrett as well seeing as he was now topless. Her puppies had been given some food to chew on while she changed and were getting tired again. She picked them up and accepted the wrap that the Dalish carried their babes around in and placed them against her chest until she was led to her own tent.
'Wait miss!' The young elf said as Makatza go ready to leave. She grabbed a pin that had a beautiful white and red centred flower on it and pinned one side of her hair behind her ear. 'There, now you look Dalish,' she said proudly.
'Thank you, Ameretta,' Makatza smiled as she had only just learned the woman's name while they chatted. She left the tent, blinking at the bright light and smiled as she saw her father speaking to Garrett and Fenris around a fire. She walked over and put down the puppies next to Bubble smiling as they cuddled up to the Mabari, she didn't get a chance to say hello as she was grabbed and lifted up high.
'Ah! There she be! Look at ma Lethallan!' He laughed as he spun her, not knowing that the reason she was holding onto him so tightly was because she was terrified of the height. 'Look at ma bairn, she is jus' beautiful! A proper Dalish lass!' He finally put her down and she inhaled deeply clutching onto his arms. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and squeezed her tightly as he kissed the top of her head. 'Tonight we celebrate!' He calls out hearing the rest of the camp cheer happily.
'Every time I come to the camp you insist on celebrating,' Makatza laughs as she frees herself. 'It's becoming a habit of yours,' she scolds. 'You best not be drinking too much,' she adds. She passes the tunic to her cousin so he could put it on.
Garrett chuckles and stands up drifting to the side of the camp with his Uncle in tow, 'Silvanus, Katza wishes to stay a couple of days, I on the other hand have to get back to the city before my mother skins my backside for missing another portrait session,' he says grinning. He holds out his hand and shakes Silvanus' warmly. 'I won't be coming back for a while, Katza will return to Kirkwall with Fenris in a few days,' he says watching the older elf's face darken a little.
'He isnae goin' wit' ya?' He asks as he narrows his eyes at the man that was avoiding being bitten by curious wolves, much to his daughter's amusement.
Garrett grins, 'ah, I think they're sweet on each other,' he warns. 'He looks out for her in his own ways and she's the only one that can actually get him to smile and stop brooding though neither of them would admit it.'
'Is that so?' Silvanus scowls as he crosses his arms. He didn't like that idea, he knew what a dangerous man the lyrium warrior was and who exactly was hunting him. 'Does Makatza ken his past?' He asks Garrett who shrugs a shoulder in reply.
'I'm not sure what he's told her, to be honest,' he says simply. 'Anyway, until next time, Uncle,' he says patting the man on the shoulder. 'Good luck, come on, Bubble,' he whistles watching as the Mabari woofs a goodbye to his cousin before racing over to his feet. Hawke felt a little smug and he knew that Isabela's head was going to explode when she heard that they were staying at the camp together, he mentally groaned as it meant that he was going to have to answer Sebastian as well.
Makatza grabbed a pup that was determined to make Fenris lame and bopped the wolf cub on the nose as she growled at him. 'I quite like wearing my collar as a belt,' she said as she looked down at herself. 'The Dalish clothing is comfy as well,' she says putting the puppy back down. 'Just goes to show how large my wolf form is to my actual real body,' she laughs as Fenris gives her a half smile.
'Yes, you are quite large for a wolf, I believe Varric called you a Dire wolf, I feel that is a more accurate description,' he says nodding. 'Ah, here comes your father,' he says feeling a little awkward about the whole situation, Silvanus did not look happy to see him, could her father tell how he felt towards Makatza? The young woman smiled and turned to her father hugging him tightly, she distracted him enough for the tension to be alleviated.
'Fenris, I arranged fer new clothin' fer ya,' Silvanus motions an elf that was waiting on them. 'Yer clothes are grubby,' he says looking him up and down with a bit of a disapproving look. 'Come Makatza, while yer waitin',' he says steering her and the puppies to the other side of the camp where his tent was. 'Sooo,' he said as Makatza gave him a puppy to hold while she groomed and fed her sibling. 'Fenris...' he says awkwardly.
Makatza raises a brow. 'What about him?' She asks, already knowing where this was going.
'He isa dangerous man,' he mutters looking at the small creature in his hands. 'I worry-'
'There really is no need to worry,' Makatza says simply. 'Whatever happens, happens. That's all I want said on the matter,' she puts bluntly. 'Until someone serious comes along you don't worry about anything,' Makatza says kindly.
'I cannae say I like him,' Silvanus grumbles.
'What father likes a man who shows attention to his daughter?' Makatza laughs as Silvanus continues to complain and she catches movement out her eye spotting Fenris walking towards them looking a little uncomfortable, 'besides,' she said smiling. 'I like this one.'
