Chapter 44
Warning bells tolled, echoing all around Camelot, Kara's feet pounded on the stone floor as she ran through the castle, seeing others running in all directions, preparing for what may come next, scared looking citizens were being rushed into the castle
Kara skidded to a halt outside Morgana's room ,her guards gone, probably called to their post, she entered and instantly found Morgana, she was standing by the window looking out, watching he people flooding in
"He's coming isn't he" her voice sounded distant
"Yes" Kara replied, standing in the middle of the room, unsure of what to do now
"And has Arthur sent you to stop me from going out there?" she asked, still not looking at Kara
"He is worried that Helios will be looking for you after you turned against him" the blonde's hand felt clammy "And I want to keep you safe and if that means keeping you in this room, then that's what I will do"
Finally Morgana turned to face her, her green eyes ringed with red, she had been crying
"You will not be around forever to protect me" she was trying her best to keep her voice even, but Kara could tell the struggle behind it
"I'm here now" Kara stated "And for now I am not going anywhere"
The blonde watched a single tear roll down Morgana's cheek, she marched forward and wrapped her arms around Morgana's waist, hugging her closely, after a long moment she felt Morgana's arms close around her own body
"I'm not gonna let him touch you" Kara vowed, stroking Morgana's hair "I'm going to protect you, no matter what"
She felt Morgana's arms tighten with that last promise
The pair held each other for a long time, each finding solace in the other's embrace, but eventually they stepped apart and together they took to watching out the window, the last of the citizens were filtering in to the citadel, the gates closing behind them, then there was silence.
Everything seemed to come to a standstill after that, the guards and knights were in their positions, the barricades were set and Arthur himself stood upon the castle wall, looking out across the land
They had to wait
Kara didn't do well at waiting and her mind drifted, home seemed like another life time, so much had happened in this world, this universe, she had lived as a mortal and she had survived only because of Morgana, if it wasn't for her taking her from that dungeon, Kara was sure she would be dead, or worse.
The blonde found herself looking at the raven haired woman, she was finding it harder and harder to distinguish her feelings for Morgana and what she was reflecting off of Lena, they were the same person, different universes but the same soul
She had to resist the urge to tuck the raven hair behind Morgana's ear, the same way she did to comfort Lena when she was stressed, the blonde dropped her gaze, the pain she felt in her heart too much, she was torn
Kara moved away from the window and took to sitting in the chair by the fire, she was watching the flames as they danced, flickering at one another, she wrung her hands together, becoming slightly sweaty with anticipation, she imagined an army marching towards Camelot, thundering through the surrounding forests
Her heart pounded in her chest, she took a hold of the dagger that Arthur had given her, she looked at it in more detail, it's steel blade was flawless, like it had just been sharpened, the dragon emblem of Camelot wrapped around the cross guard. Kara got the sense that this was a ceremonial dagger, she wished that she had Gwen's sword with her, at least then she would have more reach, though silently she hoped that she would not need to use it.
She rotated the blade over and over in her hands, she stared at the wall, Morgana had been silently standing by the window, she hadn't moved and Kara was starting to get concerned, whenever Lena became silent for a long time she was plotting something, like a company take over or something like that, the blonde worried what Morgana could be plotting, especially with Helios on the approach to Camelot.
The whole kingdom was silent, the only sound was the wind as it whistled through the open window and the crackling of the fire.
Kara put her head in her hands, a strange sound coming to her ears, it was low, almost inaudible, she looked to the goblet of water next to her, she swallowed nervously, the liquid in the goblet rippled, she had flash backs to when she first watched Jurassic Park and the t-rex footfalls creating ripples in the water.
The blonde stood and turned to Morgana who was still staring outside the window, she could see her shoulders tensing slightly
Then the marching footfalls became louder, echoing in the silence
Kara walked slowly over to the window, coming to stand just behind Morgana's shoulder, they couldn't see anything yet, but the footfalls were unmistakable and they were getting louder and louder
Kara could hear Morgana's breath become unsteady, like she was trying to stay composed but fear gripped her, her hands gripped the front of her dress, to stop them from shaking
Kara placed a hand on her upper arm
"I'm here, I'm right here" she whispered
Morgana nodded but kept her eyes on the treeline just beyond the outskirts of the village, though her hand came up to cover Kara's on her arm, she took a deep breath
"He is here"
The blonde felt Morgana's grip tighten slightly
The treeline started to move, the leaves rustling, there was a glowing from within the forest, fire torches came into view, Kara hadn't even notice the sun was now setting, they had waited all day for the arrival of Helios
The army slowly made their way up through the now empty village, spreading out, covering all the possible routes up to the castle walls, more and more men filtered out of the forest
A call rang out and the army came to a stop, more silence, a lone figure stepped forward and towards the castle gates
From Morgana's reaction Kara could tell that it was Helios who stood there looking up at Arthur
