Chapter 45
.
Sheriff Duncan and Gary Fredo were driving back to Sanctuary from the prison. Carmen Flint hadn't exactly confessed to anything more, she stood by her story. All these two lawmen could go by was their experience and intuition, none of which was evidence.
.
Gary: That woman, Lillian, do you really believe she's a medium?
Duncan: I do. I know it wouldn't hold up in court, but I believe her version of events.
Gary: Which would mean that Angel Flint molested her own sister, and committed suicide. But that someone, someone female, desecrated her body, albeit at her request. If this other person is a woman, I did notice that Lillian seemed uneasy when Mary Elizabeth entered the house.
Duncan: Actually I think she was more uneasy to be around Jimmy.
Gary: They have a history together?
Duncan: Sort of, she's his mother.
Gary: Excuse me?
Duncan: 18 years ago Lillian was raped, got pregnant, had Jimmy, gave him up for adoption. The Tinkers adopted Jimmy, and when he turned 15, they told him the truth. Lillian, for better or worse, has never really been able to accept Jimmy as her son.
Gary: And you didn't think to tell me this beforehand?
Duncan: How many psychics and mediums do you think I know? Besides I spoke with Lillian beforehand, she told me she could be completely impartial.
Gary: So she says. Did it ever occur to you that maybe she made up that stuff about Angel committing suicide, or the other person being female. Maybe she doesn't love Jimmy unconditionally, but does want to keep him from facing a murder charge. And what if she'd identified Jimmy as the killer, one could have argued that maybe she was so traumatized by the rape that she wants him to suffer?
Duncan: These things occured to me, that's why asking for her help wasn't exactly my first instinct. But for all our scientific investigation we came up empty, at least on this case. At most we were trying to provoke the killer into making a mistake, but if the killer was at the seance she, or he, did a great job keeping up their poker face.
Gary: You still should have told me about their relationship beforehand.
Duncan: Maybe you're right. I'm sorry.
Gary: Apology accepted.
Duncan: So what now?
Gary: I wish I knew. If one believes Lillian then Angel took her own life.
Duncan: Do you believe her?
Gary: I don't know. The best intel we got from her was that Angel molested Abby. I supposse we just wait to see if Abby admits to being molested at all.
