Greetings, community! Dvdryms here with Chapter 74. First, in response to your questions.
—To Cyber Warrior: Currently, I have no plans for a sequel.
—To Enma55: My opinion on Sevens, huh? So far, I'm not that impressed. The change in the art style, the age of the characters, the ace Monster's kind of wimpy appearance, the new Rush Duel mechanic, all of these don't sit very well with me. Of course, I will still watch it and hope it will overturn my negative first impression during its run.
—To Guest 1.0: I'd say Reiji, Yuya and Yukio are probably ahead of Rey at this point, though not by much.
—To Guest: Thanks for pointing out my mistakes.
And now, on with the story!
Chapter 74 – Aftermath of the Struggle
"Yukio! Come on, wake up! It's breakfast time!"
The silver-haired youth let out a muffled groan following the knock on the door and the voice calling out for him. After some twisting and turning, Yukio eventually rose while grumbling. Upon feeling a small weight next to him, he pulled the blankets to reveal a white-furred cat with dichromatic eyes snuggling up to him.
"Geez, you again, Core?" Yukio smiled as he rubbed the cat's belly, eliciting a pleased purring from it. "I can't understand why you're so attached to me, little buddy."
After a few seconds of petting the cat, Yukio descended from his room in the second floor of the house by means of a sliding pole and headed to the dining room, where Yuya's mother, Sakaki Yoko, was busy setting up the table.
"Good morning, Yoko-san." Yukio greeted the blond-haired woman. "I can smell something even more delicious than usual. It looks like you've outdone yourself again."
"Just as you boys evolve as Duelists, I've also got to polish my own skills, no?" Yoko smiled. "Now, where are those two lazy bums? The food will get cold."
"Yuya was up all night, so he might take some time." Yukio said. "As for the other, now that he's probably smelled the food, he'll be here in three…two…one…"
True to Yukio's predictions, a bluish blur descended from the second floor and sat on the seat across from him faster than the eye could see, two forks on his hand and a small amount of drool running down his mouth.
"And zero." Yukio said while smirking. "Glad you could join us, Sora."
"You know I never miss a fine breakfast, especially when it's made by Yoko-san." Sora said with a grin. "I can't think of a better way to start the day, unless a good Duel is involved."
"Well, I can't really disagree with that."
"Good morning, everyone…" Yuya entered the dining room while stifling a yawn and took the seat next to Yukio. "For the record, I really hate tests. I spent almost all day yesterday cramming and my head feels like it's going to explode…"
"You'd think saving all worlds from destruction would give you a pass or something." Sora remarked as he started eating. "The education system of this dimension is even more merciless than Academia."
"I, for one, am glad that our greatest concern for now is studying and showing up for formal events." Yukio said as he started pouring hot sauce all over his breakfast, causing Yuya to edge away from him. "Trust me when I say I won't miss the Dimensional War, especially the several near-death experiences."
"You have a point there." Yuya agreed. "I can't believe it's only been nine months since that battle. It feels like years have passed."
Both Yukio and Sora nodded at Yuya's words. Ever since the Dimensional War concluded, the two youths had been staying at Yuya's house. In Sora's case, he didn't have anywhere to return to considering he was an orphan, so it was possible this arrangement could become permanent when taking into account his close relationship with the Sakaki family. As for Yukio, he was asked to remain in Maiami City by Reiji until things settled down. He had also enrolled at Maiami Second High along with Yuya and the others as a transfer student for the time being. While he struggled keeping up due to his lack of formal education beyond the basics, he still found a classroom a hundred times more preferable than the battlefield. At that moment, Yoko opened the television, tuning in to a news channel.
[This is Takanashi Yua, live from the Xyz Dimension's Heartland City.] A female reporter could be heard announcing. [The reconstruction of the city has been progressing at a steady pace thanks to the combined efforts of its own residents, the government, support from Leo Corporation and of course, the assist of the now-defunct Academia's members. While tensions are still present between the members of the former Resistance and Academia's troops, there have been no serious incidents so far due to the intervention of Heartland's provisional city council and former Commander-in-Chief Edo Phoenix. Thanks to the enthusiasm of everyone involved in the project, it is estimated that it will take only half a year at most until the city is fully restored to its former glory and splendor.]
[Thank you very much, Yua.] A male reporter was heard speaking next. [I believe I speak for everyone when I say that I look forward to the day when the residents of Heartland can walk the streets of a once again pristine city, free from the scars of war that nearly destroyed us all. Now, onto our next topic, namely Neo Domino City's new policy regarding—]
"Sounds like Edo and the others have their hands full in Heartland." Yukio commented with a smile. "I thought that there might be trouble or conflict when it was decreed that most of Academia's members and students had to participate in the reconstruction efforts, but it seems they've got everything under control."
"It's to be expected." Sora chimed in from the side. "Most of Academia's personnel and students were deceived and manipulated by the Professor after all. I don't think anyone is willing to cause trouble for the sake of such a leader. Most students and teachers are genuinely remorseful and wish to make amends."
"Unless we're talking about the majority of the former Elites who fought for Academia until the end." Yukio said with a frown. "They've been imprisoned, awaiting trial and sentencing after their psychological evaluations are complete, right?"
"Yes." Sora nodded. "And judging from how they acted, Elites like Savaris, Gerard and Yusuke probably won't see the light of day ever again. Those who joined us in the middle of the war like Ryo or Johan won't face repercussions, while Duelists like Kenzan or Takuma will probably have to do some community service or something. They weren't as deranged as the others after all."
"I'm more surprised that Akaba Leo avoided execution." Yuya said. "Many people were adamant that he should pay for his crimes with his life. While he was our greatest enemy after Zarc…I personally could never really wish for his death."
"Fortunate then that Reiji is just as much of a bleeding heart as you, and that he valued Ray's last request." Yukio said. "He was able to convince the judges that there was no point in executing Akaba Leo, and the words of the Lancers' leader carry a lot of weight in all dimensions. Instead, he got a life sentence. How lucky for that bald bastard…"
"You seem dissatisfied about that." Yuya said. "Don't you remember what Reiji said? That—"
"Yes, yes, there have been enough deaths already, so there's no sense in adding to the pile." Yukio spoke while waving his hand in a dismissive manner. "Akaba Leo's death doesn't change anything and won't bring anyone back. My mind understands that very well…but my heart won't acknowledge it that easily, and I'm sure that's the same for many people. Good intentions or not, that bastard put us through Hell because of his selfishness, and he should suffer more."
"You think he's not suffering right now?" Yuya said. "Did you see his expression during the trial, how he never uttered a single word? He looked like an already dead man. His failure to bring back his daughter, the fact that he almost destroyed the world, and the atrocities he committed, all that are probably weighing down on his conscience. Death might have actually been a mercy for him. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars while tormented by his guilt and failures."
"Yuya's right." Sora commented. "I wouldn't want to be in his place for sure. But the one who certainly got a karmic punishment was Roget. Remember his face when his sentence was announced?"
All three youths couldn't help but snicker upon recalling Roget's trial. The former Academia agent who had tried to become Neo Domino City's ruler was sentenced to be imprisoned and work in the waste-processing facilities beneath the city for the rest of his life. The man had gone as pale as a ghost at first, and then had started screaming things like 'I'm the Director of Security, the absolute authority over this trash heap of a city! I will not be treated like garbage!' and 'You'll all pay for your disrespect! When I claim this City, you'll be the first to go!'. As he was dragged out, he had started crying and begging for mercy. Of course, no-one had paid any heed to his cries as Duel Chaser 227 had thrown him inside the transport van with a satisfied smirk on his face.
"All in all, things are finally starting to return to normal." Sora continued. "The scars of the Dimensional War have started fading away and people slowly moving forward with their lives."
"Perhaps…although some scars will remain forever etched in the hearts of those who lost friends and family during the war…"
The three youths' expressions became sober following Yuya's words. What came to everyone's mind was Asuka's reaction after being informed of her brother's death in the battle against Zarc.
"…I suppose I should have expected this, especially when considering what my brother became."
She had said so, taking the news rather well with an impassive expression when they were delivered to her. Afterwards, she had excused herself, locking herself in her room. Asuka's friends, Junko and Momoe, who had visited her later to see if she was alright, had found her crying and grieving for her deceased brother. Despite what he had done, she couldn't help but mourn him, something perfectly natural. Similar scenes were most likely taking place across the four dimensions as people grieved for those who had lost their lives as a consequence of the war and Zarc's actions.
"Alright, that's enough gloomy stuff for now." Yoko said while clapping her hands. "Yuya, Yukio, you'd better hurry up or you'll be late for school at this rate."
"Damn it, that's right!"
Yukio cursed as he started wolfing down his breakfast, with Yuya following suit. After the two youths were done, the two youths grabbed their bags and turned to the other two occupants.
"We're off, Yoko-san, Sora! See you later!"
"See you later, Mom, Sora!"
After saying so, Yukio and Yuya rushed outside as fast as they could. While running, Yuya turned to Yukio and spoke.
"Come to think of it, why aren't we using your D-Wheel? We'd be at school in no time if we did."
"It can't be helped." Yukio responded. "I've sent it for repairs and it won't be finished until later today. As such, run until your legs give out! I don't want to get scolded again for tardiness!"
"That's your fault for not waking up when you were supposed to!"
While the two youths were conversing like that, the outline of Maiami Second High could be seen in the distance. With one last burst of speed, Yuya and Yukio succeeded in entering the courtyard a couple of minutes before classes were scheduled to start.
"Safe…" Yukio said while wheezing. "Now, we just need to get to class and—"
"Oh, if it isn't Yuya and Yukio. Why are you two in such a rush?"
Turning to their left, the two youths saw Gongenzaka standing there along with Yuzu and Sawatari. At that moment, Yukio also noticed that a large number of students were also leisurely sitting outside, chatting with their friends or Dueling in several spots around the courtyard.
"What's going on?" Yuya wondered. "Shouldn't everyone be in class?"
"Didn't you see the message I sent you?" Yuzu said. "Classes would start later today because the faculty has some sort of emergency meeting."
Yuya checked his Duel Disk, taking note of the fact that Yuzu had indeed sent him a message, but he had somehow failed to notice it. He rubbed his neck while smiling in an awkward manner.
"Oh, that's right. I guess I missed it somehow…"
"I'll chew you out later for that." Yukio said as he looked around. "For now, how about we move to the side? The stares are starting to get annoying."
True enough, many students in the courtyard were staring at them while whispering. Upon seeing this, Gongenzaka sighed as he spoke.
"Are they still fixated on us…? It's been nine months already. However, I, the man Gongenzaka, am glad they've at least stopped swarming us and pestering us for autographs or tales regarding our exploits. It was starting to get irritating."
"It's an unavoidable part of our duties." Sawatari said with a proud expression. "We're the Lancers, the heroes who saved the four dimensions. Making sure our heroic acts inspire others and acting as a pillar of stability by interacting with the public are essential in this transition period."
"That's…actually kind of well-thought out." Yukio said with a raised eyebrow. "You're full of surprises some times, Sawatari."
"Well, truth be told, it's all second-handed." Sawatari said with a grin. "I was looking through my father's speeches and saw something similar written there. Doesn't make my words any less true though."
"Indeed." Gongenzaka nodded. "On the subject of our Mayor, I'm surprised by how swiftly he dealt with the damages caused by the Obelisk Force's invasion and the Professor's attempt to unite the dimensions. He may have a rotten attitude and be arrogant, but his management skills are the real deal."
"Don't talk like that about my father…is what I want to say, but I'm well aware that he's a pain in the neck at times." Sawatari said with a sigh. "It's a good thing that Akaba Reiji is reigning him in at certain stuff so that he doesn't go overboard."
As they passed by a couple of students who were Dueling, Yukio noticed the columns of light that represented the presence of a Pendulum Scale on both players' fields. Following his line of sight, Yuya chuckled as he spoke.
"It's hard to believe at times that Pendulum Summon has become so widespread after the sudden and unexplained emergence of Pendulum cards throughout our world. That Observer fellow left us a pretty big boon here."
"It was quite the big surprise." Yuzu remarked. "The Standard Dimension basically became the Pendulum Dimension now. I'm sure the Pro League matches will become really heated up once everyone has mastered Pendulum, and once the Pro League is reestablished of course. We have three more dimensions to take into account now, which means new ranks and new tournaments have to be organized."
"First though, the big brains have to restore and improve the Real Solid Vision System." Sawatari said as he pointed at the Duel Monsters holograms, which lacked any sort of mass. "Hasn't there been any progress on that, Yuya? Sakaki Yusho has been helping the scientists out as the one most familiar with Akaba Leo's research, so you must know something."
"Not that much, I'm afraid." Yuya responded. "We barely see him these days, since he's always stuck in Leo Corporation's labs. Last time, he said they were pretty close to a solution, but their 'pretty close' can be several months away still. It's a shame too since we have so many new applicants for You Show Duel School, but we can't enroll them and start classes until the Real Solid Vision System starts functioning again. The Principal is going ballistic over the fact that he can't capitalize on our big break."
"It's true that Dad is more irritable than usual." Yuzu said, and then hit her open palm with her fist. "Ah, could that be the reason why he's been so hard on Yukio and won't let him get near Serena?"
At that, everyone present turned to Yukio with wide grins on their faces, causing the latter to frown at the direction this conversation was going to.
"Speaking of which, you've never really told us much about your relationship with Serena, Yukio~." Sawatari spoke with a playful tone as he wrapped his arm around the silver-haired youth's shoulder. "Surely there must be one or two interesting stories there, right?"
"Oh, don't tease the poor guy, Sawatari." Yuzu giggled. "It wouldn't be nice if the nasty truth that his relationship with Serena hasn't progressed at all got out after that surprise kiss."
"Seriously?" Yuya raised an eyebrow. "You always dodged the subject when I asked you, but to think that nothing has changed so far, I'm honestly surprised. You're usually such a decisive person, yet you're acting in such a meek manner now."
"It can't be helped, can it!?" Yukio exploded as his face flushed red. "I haven't the foggiest about how to approach a girl in 'that' way! And you guys can keep your snide comments to yourselves since you haven't exactly been helpful, what with your zero experience in dating and relationships!"
"Hey, I've been doing my best to teach Serena some common sense, which I'll have you know is a herculean task by itself." Yuzu countered. "With my hands being full like that, I don't exactly have time to play wingman here."
"In any case, it's not good to tease someone regarding matters of the heart." Gongenzaka added from the side before turning to Yukio. "As for your troubles, how about asking for advice from someone more experienced in relationships?"
"Gee, why didn't I think of that?" Yukio responded with a tone dripping with sarcasm. "Unfortunately, the only person I know who has some experience on that matter is Yuto, and we haven't exactly had the chance to speak about it. The times we've met so far can be counted in the fingers of one hand, and Kurosaki has always been hovering around him like a vengeful ghost. These aren't exactly ideal conditions to strike a conversation about boyfriends and girlfriends."
"True, especially with Kurosaki still holding a grudge against Yuto in all likelihood for keeping his relationship with Ruri secret." Yuya said with a lopsided smile. "Let's hope he will find it in his heart to forgive him and approve of them…some time in this millennium. We all know how stubborn he can be."
"Oh, that reminds me." Yuzu said as she turned to Yukio. "Serena has a message for you. She said that since tomorrow it's a weekend and there's not any scheduled event for the Lancers to appear, it's the ideal time for you to fulfil the promise you made to her in Heartland. Not really sure what she means by that, but she said you'd understand."
"I do unfortunately…" Yukio spoke with a downcast expression, before steeling himself. "I've dreaded this time…but I guess it's something that should be settled sooner rather than later…"
"Hm?" Gongenzaka raised an eyebrow. "What are you muttering about there, Yukio?"
"Nothing much." Yukio shook his head as the bell rang. "Let's get to class. We have a test to ace…or barely pass in some people's cases."
"Hey, why are you looking at me like that?"
Yuya's indignant response prompted the other four youths to chuckle as they entered the school building.
The next day…
"What is that girl doing? It's half an hour past our appointed meeting time…"
Yukio grumbled while slumped on his D-Wheel and tapping his foot in an impatient manner. Serena was usually on time for her meetings, no doubt a result of Academia's strict policy regarding tardiness. But as of yet, she was nowhere to be seen. He thought about calling her, but he didn't want to have to listen to another tirade from Shuzo about him 'smothering his baby girl' or something like that. At that moment, he heard familiar voices in the distance.
"I get it already! Stop following me around! I'm already late enough as it is!"
"Yes, but do you have enough money with you? What about a helmet? I don't like the idea of you riding a D-Wheel without protection. And it's kind of chilly today, so maybe you should have worn a warmer coat. And also—"
"Are you still talking!?"
Yukio turned his head to the side where Serena, who was accompanied by a fretting Shuzo and seemed extremely annoyed, was approaching him. Upon catching sight of him, Shuzo dashed to Yukio with a glowering expression on his face.
"Yukio, you'd better take good care of my precious Serena, or I'll have your head otherwise! My burning spirit will turn your body to ash and—"
"Yes, that's enough!"
Serena pulled out a paper fan and slapped Shuzo on the head hard, causing him to crumble on the ground with a dazed expression on his face.
"I see you're starting to resemble your new sister in attitude as well." Yukio said while pointing at the twitching Shuzo. "Is he going to be alright?"
"He's tough as nails, so don't worry about him." Serena said as she mounted Yukio's D-Wheel. "Let's hurry up and go before he wakes up and starts pestering us again."
"You don't have to tell me that twice."
After making sure that Serena was seated properly, Yukio revved up his D-Wheel, leaving Shuzo behind. After a few minutes of driving in silence, Serena spoke.
"I'm really sorry about Shuzo-san's attitude. He might seem unnecessarily harsh at times, but he means well. I know firsthand how kind he is."
"Don't worry about it." Yukio responded. "He did just get a new daughter, so I guess it makes sense for him to be so overprotective of you. Isn't that right, Hiiragi Serena?"
"It still feels so unreal…" Serena said with a small smile on her face. "I was sure I was hallucinating when Shuzo-san offered to adopt me as his daughter. I never had a family before, but now…I have a father and a sister, as well as a place to call home. If this is a dream, then I don't want to wake up."
"I'm really happy for you, Serena." Yukio said with a smile of his own. "You've finally found your own place to belong, leaving the shadow Academia cast over you behind. At least some good things came out of this blasted war."
"Yes, that's true." Serena said. "That's why, it's time for you to regain what you lost the day you left the orphanage behind as well. You've already put it off long enough."
"I still think this is a horrible idea…" Yukio muttered with a dispirited sigh. "I'm not exactly sure they'd welcome back with open arms after I walked out on everyone. Not to mention the things I did, the people I've hurt…"
"As far as I'm concerned, you've more than made amends for any misdeeds in your past." Serena said. "I mean, you've just saved the world. And even if you hadn't, I'm sure everyone at the orphanage wouldn't spite you for your past actions."
"Even so, I—"
"Are you still whining!?" Serena said while pulling Yukio's cheeks. "Geez, the way you sometimes overthink things is one of your most annoying traits!"
"Stop pulling, you crazy girl!" Yukio exclaimed. "I'm still driving here! Are you trying to get us killed!? For crying out loud, you say that about me, but your thoughtlessness is as annoying as always! If you wreck us or my brand new D-wheel, I'm never going to forgive you!"
Their bickering went on for a few minutes until both calmed down. Then, Serena spoke.
"Speaking of which, when did you get this D-Wheel? If I'm not mistaken, this is the same one as the D-Wheel you used during the Friendship Cup, no?"
"It was a gift I received from the Synchro Dimension officials when the Lancers visited Neo Domino City three months ago." Yukio answered. "I've wanted to obtain a D-Wheel ever since I first rode one, so it was a good opportunity. Akaba Reiji arranged things so that I could get a permit to drive it even in our dimension. Being a Lancer comes with several perks, even though the constant attention and fawning get annoying at times."
"I see." Serena said. "Maybe I should ask for a D-Wheel next time we visit the Synchro Dimension as well. Although this isn't half-bad either."
Upon saying so, Serena leaned on Yukio's back with a pleased smile on his face. Yukio blushed, but remained silent, not trusting himself to say something that wouldn't come out as a stutter or embarrass him. Their journey continued in relative silence, the D-Wheel exiting Maiami City and passing a couple of towns along the way until they finally reached the outskirts of a medium-sized city. Yukio stopped his vehicle by the side of the road, looking at the city with a wistful expression on his face.
"Clover City…" Yukio muttered. "I never expected to set foot here again in my lifetime…"
"It's a nice place." Serena commented. "It's not as big or as opulent as Maiami City, but it looks tidy and clean with lots of open spaces. It reminds a bit of the town I grew up before the war ravaged it. So, where's the orphanage you grew up?"
"It's close to the city's suburbs." Yukio said as he started driving once again. "We should be there soon."
After driving for a few minutes, Yukio and Serena finally arrived outside a large three-storey house with the sign 'Tachibana Orphanage' on it. Upon taking a closer look while dismounting from the D-Wheel, Yukio let out a small smile and spoke.
"It looks in a far better condition than when I left. I guess Reiji came through as promised. But now that I'm actually here…"
"Hey, no getting cold feet at this point." Serena gave him a gentle push. "Take a page out of Sakaki Yusho's book and take a step forward with courage. Nothing will change and nothing will begin otherwise."
"I really hate that credo right now…" Yukio grumbled, but walked forward and knocked the door. "Hello, is anyone there? It's me…Yukio…"
Instead of a response, the door opened slightly with a creaking sound. Curious about the fact that the door had been left open, and slightly concerned, Yukio stepped inside the dimly lit living room area, with Serena following behind him. However, before they could even take two steps inside—
[Surprise!]
The lights were suddenly switched on as several young boys and girls popped out from behind several furniture while shouting as one. After his eyes adjusted, Yukio could make out a long table with several delicacies on it standing in the center of the room, while a large banner with the words 'Welcome home, Yukio!' sewn on it was hanging from the ceiling. Then, two children rushed forward and slammed on Yukio, almost knocking him off his feet.
"Big bro Yukio!" A young boy with tussled grey hair and almond eyes yelled with a wide smile on his face. "You're finally back! It's been so long!"
"You've gotten so big!" The other child, a girl with long, black hair and green eyes, said while her eyes were sparkling. "We barely recognized you when we saw you in the tears in the sky and on television! You were really cool while you were fighting that big dragon!"
"Mamoru… Nene-chan…" Yukio muttered with a dazed expression before kneeling and embracing the two children, who let out squeals of delight. "It really has been a long time. I'm so glad to see you again…"
"At long last, you've returned, Yukio. We've been waiting for this moment for very long."
Following these words, Yukio tensed and stood up with a nervous expression on his face. Across him, a middle-aged couple was gazing at him with neutral expressions on their faces. The man had short brown hair and almond eyes, while several burn scars could be seen on his forearms. The woman was a head shorter than him, had short red hair and light blue eyes, and wore a pair of horn-rimmed glasses. The man looked at Yukio once again before turning to Serena.
"Oh, excuse me, young lady. We may have spoken to the phone, but I've yet to introduce myself. My name is Tachibana Hayato, and this is my wife, Tachibana Otoha. We are the ones responsible for running this orphanage. It's very nice to meet you in person."
"The pleasure is all mine." Serena made a small bow as she said so. "I've been looking forward to see the place Yukio grew up for quite some time. I have to say it's a beautiful home."
"Oh my, how kind of you to say so." Otoha said with a smile. "However, this place used to be a lot more decrepit and run-down. It's only in the last couple years that we managed to refurbish it and make it into the home you see today."
"Yes, many things have changed, but there's one issue that has remained unresolved until today." Hayato said as he turned to Yukio, who stiffened. "It's been almost five years since the day you left this place. There's one thing I've been wanting to tell you ever since."
"Figures…" Yukio sighed. "Very well, let me have it. I probably deserve whatever accusations you throw at me."
Hayato said nothing as he approached Yukio, raising his hands. The silver-haired youth braced himself for a slap or a punch…only to be shocked when the older man wrapped his arms around him in a hug.
"Welcome home, son." Hayato said with a smile. "We've all missed you a lot."
Yukio was speechless for a few seconds before speaking with a trembling voice.
"What…? Welcome…home? Me…? But I…I! I left you all without saying anything…and hurt so many people… How can you say that so casually!?"
"You did your best for this orphanage, didn't you?" Otoha said as she also embraced Yukio. "You've been fighting alone for so long in order to protect this place. If anyone has to apologize and atone for your actions, it's us useless adults for our incompetence that forced you into this position. We're truly sorry, Yukio."
"What are you saying?" Yukio said with a distressed tone. "Apologize? If it wasn't for you, then I would be nothing. There's nothing for you to apologize for."
"Then there's nothing for you to apologize for either." Hayato said as he patted Yukio's head. "You've worked hard, and we are proud of you. Always have, always will be."
"Yes, big bro Yukio is the best!" Mamoru said with a wide grin. "He's so strong and cool!"
"It's because of big bro Yukio that we are able to live like this." Nene added from the side. "So, truly thank you!"
"Everyone…" Yukio muttered as the other kids also chimed in, praising him. "I…"
"Hey, what's this?" Serena said while smiling. "Are you crying, Yukio? Now that's a rare sight."
"I'm not crying!" Yukio protested, although it was obvious that tears had started running down his eyes. "Those aren't tears! This is just sweat from my heart!"
"You're sweating an awful lot there then." Serena said as she patted Yukio's back. "Come now, even I know it's alright to cry at some times. Just let it out, tough guy."
"I said I'm not crying, damn it!"
Everybody present laughed at Yukio's reaction as he hugged Hayato and Otoha back. The other kids also swarmed around Yukio and started bombarding him with questions until Otoha clapped her hands.
"Yes, yes, I understand you're all very excited to see Yukio after all this time, but the food will get cold. Let's sit down and eat, and he'll answer your questions later."
After she said so, the children all replied with a 'Yes!' and rushed to sit down. Yukio chuckled at how familiar this scene was. Next to him, Serena spoke.
"This is a very lively place, much more boisterous than the orphanage I grew up in. Was is always like this?"
"Pretty much." Mamoru said. "We didn't have much to live with, but Papa and Mama always told us to keep smiling and having fun no matter what."
"Papa and Mama?"
"That's how they call Hayato-san and Otoha-san…and how I usually called them as well." Yukio said while rubbing his neck with a grin. "They are our parents in all but blood after all."
"Big sis Serena also grew up in an orphanage like us?" Nene asked from the side. "Did you also not know your parents?"
"Yes, although the place I spent most of my years so far wasn't exactly a pleasant one." Serena let out a lopsided smile. "Also…big sis?"
"You're big bro Yukio's friend, aren't you?" Nene said. "That makes you big sis then. Or maybe…you don't like it?"
"No, you just caught me by surprise, that's all." Serena reassured the girl with a smile. "In fact…I quite like this for some reason… Anyway, I take it you two have known Yukio the longest?"
"That's right." Mamoru said. "However, ever since I remember myself, big bro Yukio has been looking after everyone along with Papa and Mama. We've caused a lot of trouble for him."
"No trouble at all." Yukio said as everyone took a seat on the table. "It was always my pleasure looking after you, though you were a handful at times."
"I recall someone else also being a handful at times." Hayato said with a smile. "Remember all those times you got lost in the neighborhood? Or the fights you'd pick with the kids around the area? Or all those vases you broke while looking for sweets? Or maybe—"
"OK, we get it, I was also a bit of a rascal." Yukio interrupted Hayato with a grin. "Then again, who isn't at that age?"
"Oh dear, you're still using that dreadful concoction of yours?" Otoha frowned upon seeing Yukio spreading hot sauce all over his dinner. "I was hoping you'd have gotten over that nasty habit of yours after so many years, but no such luck. I've repeatedly told you it's unhealthy, but you refuse to listen. What will I do with you?"
"Come on now, you can't deny me one of my greatest pleasures in life." Yukio said as he took a big bite out of his sauce-covered steak. "Besides, like I've repeatedly told you, I'll be fine, Mom."
"Now can we hear about your fights, big bro Yukio?" Another child that looked to be around eleven years old with green hair and brown eyes asked Yukio. "You must have had an amazing adventure!"
"Yes, Kenta is right!"
"Tell us more about your battle!"
Following a chorus of requests coming from all sides, Yukio smiled as he raised his hands.
"Alright, alright, geez. You're all as impatient as ever. Well then, let's start from the beginning, namely when I arrived at Maiami City. The first thing that happened the moment I stepped foot in it was—"
Like that, Yukio began describing the events of the war while the children looked to him with rapt expressions. After about an hour or so while he was engrossed in talking to the kids, Serena turned to Otoha and spoke.
"Otoha-san, I'm curious about something. How was Yukio when he was younger? I'd be very interested in hearing more stories about his past."
"Oh, in that case, I have something even better than that." Otoha said with a smile as she brought out a large book. "I've got a lot of pictures from when Yukio was a child. I've made sure to capture most, if not all of his cute and embarrassing moments. First, let's start with—"
"You'll start with nothing!" Yukio yelled as he swiped the book with dexterous movements from Otoha's hands. "Like Hell I'm going to let you people have fun at my expense!"
"Don't be so stiff, Yukio." Hayato commented from the side. "If you can't share such moments with your girlfriend, who are you going to share them with?"
"G-Girlfriend!?" Yukio choked out amidst a fit of coughing. "W-Well, we did that…but is it truly to the point where we can call each other a couple…? Not to mention, I can't tell how she feels…or how I feel…"
"Oh dear." Hayato shook his head as Yukio began muttering at a frantic pace. "Haven't I told you many times that honesty is the best policy? That applies to yourself and your own feelings as well, you know?"
"My feelings…"
Before Yukio had a chance to say anything, several kids started dragging him from his arms.
"Come on, big bro Yukio! Show us how to Duel!"
"Yes, yes! We also want to become as strong as you one day!"
"Big sis Serena!" Nene also shouted. "Teach us as well! You're very skilled as well, right!?"
Following that, all children began requesting for the two to teach them how to Duel and show them their tricks. Upon seeing that, Yukio let out a sigh, and then smiled.
"It can't be helped, I suppose." He turned to Serena. "What do you say? Do you feel confident and strong enough to take on a bunch of hyperactive kids?"
"You know me." Serena grinned. "I always love a challenge. Alright, line up, kids! We'll turn you all into powerful Duelists today!"
[Yes!]
The children cheered as they gathered around Yukio and Serena while taking out their Decks. The two of them started teaching them then, while Hayato and Otoha looked on with matching smiles on their faces.
Several hours later…
"Haaa, I'm drained…"
Yukio let out a tired sigh as he leaned on the roof's railings, looking at the city spreading below him. After having their fill of Dueling, the children had finally gone to bed, though it was only after Yukio and Serena had both promised to play with them more tomorrow. A small part of him was grateful that they would only be staying until tomorrow afternoon. Children's stamina was endless, and he didn't feel like he would last long if he had to follow their rhythm.
"Ah, so this is where you were."
Yukio turned on his heels to see Serena approaching him. As she came to stand next to him, she let out a tired sigh as she leaned on the railings as well.
"Let me guess." Yukio said. "You're also exhausted by the children's vigor and enthusiasm, right?"
"Got it in one." Serena responded. "Not even Academia's rigorous training was so demanding. On the other hand, it was very fun, certainly something I would have never learned in Academia."
"Right…"
The two youths fell silent then, both not sure of what else they should talk about. Yukio then realized that this was the first time after all these months that both of them were alone. That thought, along with the memory of that surprising kiss at the end of the fight against Zarc, made him nervous. He recalled Hayato's earlier advice that he should be more honest, so he tried to force what he was feeling into words as he turned to the sky.
"The moon…is very beautiful tonight…"
Seriously!? That's the best you could come up with, you blasted idiot!?
Yukio mentally scolded himself as Serena spoke.
"Yes, that's true. However, you look like you want to say something else. What is it?"
"Well, here goes something…" Yukio sighed, and then said. "You know, I've been thinking lately…"
"Something in particular? Or perhaps someone?"
Serena said so with a sly smile, causing Yukio's mouth to twitch.
"…Why do I get the feeling you're having fun at my expense?"
"Me? No, that's totally not the case. Absolutely not."
"You're so not making this easy…"
"When have I ever made things easy for you?" Serena's smile became wider. "After all, you like challenges, don't you? You're not going to back down here and leave me hanging, right?"
"Conniving little…" Yukio said with a cramped smile. "Why do I get the feeling Yuzu has been teaching you a lot more than she let on?"
"She might have." Serena responded. "But you were about to say something."
"Alright then, first things first." Yukio bowed his head. "Thank you, Serena. Because you egged me on and refused to let me be ruled by my guilt, I was able to reconnect with everyone here. I couldn't have done it without you, so I'm grateful, perhaps more than you can understand."
"It was my pleasure." Serena said. "I also get the satisfaction of saying I told you so. They're all good people, so there was no way they'd turn your back on you, especially after what you've done for them. If they had, I would have beaten them senseless for their stupidity."
"There's the Serena I know." Yukio chuckled. "Your feisty personality is troublesome to deal with…but it's also a part of why I like you so much."
"What was that?" Serena put her hand near her ear. "You have to speak up because I don't think I heard you."
"Then, pay close attention." Yukio grasped Serena's hands as he spoke. "Ever since you kissed me after Yuya and I defeated Zarc, I couldn't get you out of my mind. No…actually, it was even before that. You're really important to me and I like you a lot, Serena. Not as a friend, not as family, but beyond that."
"…See, that wasn't so difficult." Serena said with a smile, although her face was beet red. "But what's this feeling? My heart is beating so fast…"
"Mine too, to the point where it think it's about to burst out of my chest." Yukio chuckled with his face color matching Serena's. "So…what about you? Was that kiss out of gratitude only…or…"
"Give me a break…" Serena said while averting her face in a bashful manner. "I wouldn't have done this for just anyone, you know? I like other people as well…but no-one as much as you. That's why I kissed you…"
Yukio couldn't help but feel that the current Serena, who was fidgeting with an embarrassed expression and a beet red face, was impossibly cute. Realizing he was staring, he cleared his throat and spoke.
"I like you, and you like me. That's all well and good…but where do we go from here? When it comes to such matters, I'm totally lost…"
"I'm not too sure either." Serena said. "How about…we start with another kiss…?"
"I guess…that's not a bad idea…"
Both Yukio and Serena leaned forward towards each other. But just before, their lips could touch, Yukio heard a sound coming from the far right. The two of them stepped back as if they had been jolted, with Yukio turning towards the source of the sound.
"Who's there!? Show yourselves!"
The door leading to the roof opened to reveal the figures of Hayato, Otoha, Mamoru and Nene, who were standing there with mischievous smiles on their faces.
"Shoot, we were so close." Nene cursed. "A little more, and we could have seen a beautiful scene."
"That's your fault, Nene." Mamoru said. "If you hadn't kicked that bucket, they wouldn't have heard us."
"Oh, come on!" Yukio shouted. "Is there no privacy here!? Also, Nene and Mamoru spying on me is one thing, but what are you doing here, Father, Mother!?"
"We were worried about whether you and Serena would be able to convey your feelings, but it seems our worries were unfounded." Otoha said. "Now then, don't hold back, you two. Go on with your business~."
"Like Hell we can go on with our business with all of you here!" Yukio bellowed. "What do you take us for, some sort of exhibitionists!? I swear, you guys sometimes are—!"
Yukio's words were cut off as his Duel Disk suddenly rang.
"Oh, what is it now?" He muttered as he took it out. "Hello!?"
[Greetings, Yukio. Am I perhaps interrupting something?]
"Reiji?" Yukio raised an eyebrow at the sight of the grey-haired youth in his Duel Disk's screen. "No, the important thing was already interrupted long ago… So, what can I do for you?"
[It's time to fulfil the final promise I made to you.] Reiji said. [I trust you remember?]
A wide smile appeared on Yukio's face as he spoke.
"Of course. I take it you finally have some free time then?"
[Indeed.] Reiji said as he straightened his glasses. [However, there are still certain issues I need to deal with, so it can't be done immediately. How about we arrange our meeting for next week? Is there a problem with that?]
"None whatsoever." Yukio grinned. "I hope you've prepared yourself. It won't mean anything if I beat you because your skills are rusty."
[I will return those words back to you.] Reiji said with a small smile. [I will be waiting for you on LDS Tower in one week. Have a pleasant night.]
With those words, Reiji signed off. Serena then spoke.
"So, the time has finally come then. You will finally get to settle the score with Reiji."
"Yes. This is truly a great night for me in all regards."
After saying so, Yukio extended his hand to the moon and made a fist.
"Wait for me, Reiji. This time, we'll decide who's the strongest without a doubt!"
This concludes Chapter 74. First of all, I apologize for the significant delay, especially when considering the size of the chapter. However, it was very hard to write it due to lack of motivation and exhaustion. My free time is also limited due to the fact that I work at a pharmacy, and we're quite busy now with the Coronavirus outbreak.
Now, in regards to the chapter itself, it explored the aftermath of the war and Yukio's situation with the orphanage, along with his relationship with Serena. Unfortunately, there was no Duel in this chapter, so you will have to wait for the next chapter, where Yukio and Reiji will finally settle matters.
Now then, regarding the aforementioned Coronavirus outbreak, I'm sure you're all tired of hearing these by now, but it's very important that we all abide by the established safety measures; frequently wash your hands, avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes, maintain at least a meter of distance from others, especially if they cough or sneeze, stay at home as much as possible and seek medical care in case you show symptoms, especially difficulty in breathing. This outbreak is a serious issue and it will require all of us working together in our respective ways in order to combat it and keep the death toll from rising.
Well, that's all for now. As always, please read, review, favorite and follow.
See you all next time!
