Chapter 47

Arthur could not believe his eyes, the fortified castle walls that have stood for over 200 years and protected Camelot for just as long, were now blown apart, the ancient stones strewn across the citadel, his own men crushed underneath.

He could hear cries of pain, the world seemed to slow around him as he took in the scene, those knights that were still standing had swarmed to protect the eastern wall under his orders where the first explosion had collapsed part of the barrier.

He expected Helios's men to break in via that point and indeed some did but it wasn't the flood of warriors that Helios commanded, Arthur too was moving to aid his men but something wasn't right, it was too few men.

Arthur spun on his heels but it was too late as a sudden second explosion blew out the front gate the blast threw him and others that were close backwards. Arthur's body hit the ground hard, his vision blurred a little, a powerful ringing in his ears

He pushed himself upright, ignoring his body's protest, a muffled roar found his ears as he saw Helios walking into his kingdom, his castle, a smile plastered on the warlord's lips, his men bolted pass him to swarm the knights of Camelot, Arthur's focus was pulled as the first soldier came rushing at him, axe raised to take him down

The Kings body reacted before his mind did, raising his sword arm and blocking the axe swipe, as their weapons connected, a shock of pain flared down Arthur's arm, he had to use his free hand to grasp the sword too, pushing the man back

He came at him again, but the thug was too eager to harm the King and became sloppy, allowing his side to become exposed, Arthur took this opening to duck and slice along his ribs, he dropped his axe and Arthur kicked him aside as another took his place but soon like his first comrade Arthur took him down quickly

The king glanced around, his own knights were becoming over run with the thuggish brutes of Helios's army, he could not see a way to defeat the overwhelming numbers of the opposition, but he had no time to think as more soldiers sprang towards him, he raised his sword and met them.

He yelled out, rallying his men, Percival and Gwain were by his side instantly

"For Camelot" Arthur said to them, they nodded and together the three of them charged towards the large group of warriors that were heading towards them, hollering out battle cries and taunts towards the knights, each eager to be the one that would kill the king, no doubt there was a reward for the one that brought Helios Arthur's head

Percival took the lead and using his larger, stronger form he barrelled straight into the nearest of the thugs, taking them down with ease, Arthur and Gwain swinging their swords at the others that flooded towards them.

The clashing of swords rang out in his ears, his shoulder flaring with pain, but he ignored it, his years of training doing him well, Helios may have the numbers but most were just thugs with unsharpened sword, Helios using them as pawns, sending them in first to tire out Arthur and his knights before the more skilled warriors were released to finish the job.

Illumination flooded the dark citadel, Arthur caught a glimpse of fires being set to the wooden building of the village and the defences within the citadel, now with the light of the flames he could properly see the carnage that surrounded him, the bodies strewn across the grounds, both his knights and the warriors that battled them, blood soaked into the stones.

Arthur's eyes caught sight of a handful of thugs leaving the battle and heading towards the doors to the main castle, it had been barricaded but he knew that it wouldn't hold forever,

"Lancelot!" he called out,

The dark haired knight glanced over at him as he disposed of another enemy

"Sire!" he responded as he fought his way to stand beside Arthur

"They are trying to breach the castle doors" Arthur breathing was heavy, he gestured over to the doors where the men were now trying to batter their way in "Take some men and go around, we have to stop them breaching"

Lancelot whipped his brow, nodding to his king, he called a couple of the nearby knights to him and worked his way back through the sea of bodies

Arthur watched him go but was struck, luckily his armour to the brunt of it, Arthur grunted and whirled around, blocking the second attack, coming face to face with a young boy, he was small and skinny, no wonder his open attack on Arthur's back had done nothing to the king's armour.

Arthur hesitated slightly, the boy could not be much older than a child, possibly fourteen years of age, his teeth gritted but there was fear in his young eyes

"You don't have to do this" Arthur implored, not wanting to take up arms against a child "Walk away and you will not be harmed by my men"

The boy seemed to consider this, looking around at the chaos that he had found himself in

"My knights will not attack a boy" Arthur continued "Go back to your home, you do not belong in a place like this"

The boy had tears in his eyes, his hands trembling making his sword shake but he nodded to Arthur and dropped his blade, running through the mass of men, Arthur hoped he would make it out alive, if any of Helios most trusted men were to see him then he was sure that he would be killed for desertion, but the King could not bring himself to harm a boy as young as him, he wondered just how many of Helios's army were made of children.
