Chapter 54
Nothing happened for the rest of that next day, food had been brought to Kara and Morgana and once she was able enough to stand on her feet, though with Kara's help, they moved back up to Morgana's bedroom, the blonde lowering her carefully on her bed. She herself was so tired that she collapsed on the other side, her eyes closing instantly, her body aching, the adrenaline from earlier wearing off, and for the first time she could feel everything and it sucked.
Gaius had done a little to help her, she had given her a tonic to drink which was the foulest thing she had ever tasted, he said it would help with the pain but she just longed for some morphine and a hot bath
She opened her eyes to see that Morgana was staring at her, her eyes glowing green in the firelight, she had a cut on her forehead that was definitely going to turn into a scar, bruises still marred her otherwise perfect pale skin, but she was alive
"It is going to be strange when you are no longer here" Morgana whispered "I have grown used to having you around"
Kara exhaled not knowing exactly what to say to this, part of her wanted to comfort Morgana and tell her that she wasn't going anywhere but that was probably a lie and she didn't want to darken the moment by speaking about her leaving
"You will be okay Kara" Morgana continued softly "You will be back with Lena, where you are supposed to be" she reached out and caught a lock of Kara's blonde hair, twirling it around her fingers absentmindedly
"It's not me I am worried about" Kara admitted, watching her hair fall between Morgana's pale fingers
"Me?" she said with a coy smile on her face "I am back in my home, Helios is gone, I will be… okay" though the final word didn't seem confident
"Morgana" Kara whispered
"You do not belong in my world Kara Danvers" Morgana cut in, the words pained her but she knew them to be true "As much as I have enjoyed having you here" she tried to joke but the humour didn't touch her eyes which were filled with sadness and longing
Kara reached out and wiped a tear from Morgana's soft cheek, there was still a slight chill to her but with every moment that passed she was getting her strength back, colour returning to her cheeks
"This is a fate we cannot escape" the sorceress continued "You will return to your world, to your life, to your love and I wish you nothing but happiness"
Kara could tell that she was holding a lot back, not want to burden Kara any more with what Morgana truly felt for the blonde and Kara couldn't deny that she felt it too, but Morgana was trying to do the right thing, knowing that Kara was destined to return to Lena
The two fell into silence, just watching one another late into the night, the blonde not really sure when she fell asleep but the morning sunlight that filtered in through Morgana's window hit her lids, Kara squinted slightly, her blue tired eyes finding Morgana's sleeping form opposite her, in the same position they had been in last night, but their hands were entwined between them, Morgana holding onto her, possibly fearing that Kara would disappear during the night, but the blonde was still here.
Kara exhaled and stared pass Morgana and out at the blue sky she could see through the window, there was a gentle breeze coming through
"You are still here"
Kara looked back to Morgana, she had her eyes open now
"It would appear so" Kara breathed, she gave Morgana a small smile "How are you feeling?" she asked, her thumb stroking their entwined hands
Morgana stretched a little, wincing as she did so "Like I have been trampled by a herd of deer"
Kara smile grew "I know that feeling"
The women heard voices from outside the window, down in the citadel, the blonde pushed herself up, she reluctantly released Morgana's hand and walked over so she could see what was going on, the aftermath of the battle had left Camelot in a bad shape, luckily the village surrounding the castle walls were relatively unharmed and the citizens were free to return to their homes.
The knights and villagers that were able had begun clearing the bodies from the grounds, they were burying their own with honour, Kara didn't know what happened to Helios's former army, she couldn't imagine that Arthur would disrespect them in any way. There was still plenty of debris that littered the ground, she looked down to see Arthur talking to some men that held pickaxes, they all looked exhausted already she wondered if she should offer some help, but a part of her didn't want to leave Morgana
A knock at the door pulled her out of her own thoughts, she turned to see Gwen at the door, she looked between Kara and Morgana, dark circles around her eyes, she obviously hadn't slept much, if at all last night
"I'm glad to see both of you well" she said with a kind smile "And to see that you are still with us" she added to Kara
A pit formed in her stomach, but she smile politely back at Gwen
Gwen sensed her hesitancy, she dropped her gaze to her feet "Um, do you two need anything? I can get you something to eat" she offered
"Gwen" Morgana said softly, standing and walking over to her "Go and get some rest"
Gwen smile weakened a little "There is too much to do, and Arthur…" words failed her
"Arthur wouldn't want you to run yourself into the ground like this" she placed a and on her arm "Go and sleep"
"I cannot, I need to-
"Gwen"
Eventually the maiden nodded and smiled to both of them before turning to leave, after the door closed silent fell again, Morgana still had her back to Kara, Kara could tell that she was thinking of what to do and what she could say to the blonde. Kara herself didn't know what she expect, she didn't even truly think that she would have survived the battle, and now that she had and Morgana was safe and reunited with her brother and her kingdom, what else was there to do?
She wondered silently to herself, that she didn't notice that the young sorceress had turned to face her
"What was Cailleach's prophecy? What were her words to you?" she asked
Kara blinked, she looked to Morgana who seemed to be thinking the exact thing as the blonde herself.
Kara thought back to that day when she and Merlin encountered the woman in rags
"She said that I needed to save your soul" Kara scratched the back of her head as she tried to remember "That you needed to be reunited with Arthur and Camelot"
Morgana came to a stop in front of her, her eyes in deep thought, a small crease forming between her dark brows, a lock of her raven hair tumbling down the side of her face, Kara had to resist the urge to tuck it back behind her ear, she dropped her gaze from Morgana's beauty, more guilt building within her.
What would she do now?
