Chapter 42: The Kiss Worth a Thousand Words

Katara wasted no time putting on her gear. It had been a long time since she had put these clothes on. They were all black so as soon as night fell, they were undetected. She even had a black waterskin to match, so her usual blue one wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb. She looked at herself in the mirror and took a deep breath. She tied her hair back into a ponytail and let out the breath she didn't realize she was holding.

She heard a knock at the door and jumped, already on high alert. She glanced through the peep hole to see Zuko standing there, in full gear himself, having already received the notice moments before she did herself.

She opened the door for him and ushered him in, "I thought we decided we would meet each other at the cell" she closed the door behind him quickly.

Zuko cleared his throat, "I know but… I just had to see you before this started…" she could see the anxiousness on his face. He was worried, she could see it from a mile away. A little bit of her resolve broke as she went to him and he took her in his arms. She felt him let out a breath and let herself melt into his warmth.

"Have the advisors said anything?" she asked him. Zuko shook his head, "They're still in there arguing… Uncle is going to tell them that we had to leave for a meeting about Republic City and will pass along their decision…"

Katara let out an anxious sigh, and pulled away to look at him, "They can't really not let us get married right?" she asked him. He sighed and took her head in the palm of his hand, "No matter what, we will figure it out… I won't stop fighting for us… Ever" as he spoke, he rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. Their lips met for a kiss, one filled with hope and longing. It was a kiss worth a thousand words.

A knock at the door caused them both to whip around. The surprise echoed in their faces when they saw Aang standing in the doorway.

"Aang… uhhh…" Katara stammered, finding an explanation but not entirely sure what the young boy had seen. His face was hard, unlike Katara had ever seen, "It's time for us to go" he spoke. Then he turned and walked away without a second look at either of them.

She ran and called after him. When she finally caught up to him, she grabbed a hold of his arm, begging him to stop and talk to her. But she didn't expect him to quickly whip around, "We don't have time to waste Katara! Especially for who you decide to screw around with!" he yelled at her, causing her to back away slightly.

"Hey!" Zuko said from behind them, "You don't get to talk to her that way!" he yelled, catching up to them quickly. Katara could feel the heat radiating off of both of the men's bodies, their blood boiling inside them.

Aang was starting to catch up to the other boy's height, but he still had to look up to glare at him. Katara tried to stand between them, "Aang is right… We don't have time to waste…" she saw the look on the young boys face, and she knew that he was desperately trying to stay strong. He wanted to yell, he wanted to cry, but he knew that right now he had to be the Avatar, not a 14 year old boy.

"Hey Twinkle Toes! Are they ready?" Toph yelled, coming up behind them. She stopped, feeling the tension and the heart rates of the two male benders in the room. Aang took one more moment to glare at the firebender before looking to Toph, "Let's go"

Katara and Zuko exchanged a look before following behind them.

The guards saw the Fire Lord and his friends' approach, under the case of nightfall and let them through the gates. They didn't ask questions and the guards that protected Ozai knew not to. The Fire Lord hadn't been to visit his father since before he was poisioned. But even still, they let the group through without any questions.

Katara had never been to visit Ozai before, but it wasn't her first time in the dungeons of the capital. As they approached the large metal door, she took a deep breath, knowing what she had to do next.

Ozai was a shell of a man, hunched in the corner, not even responding to the light invading the room.

"Get up" Zuko spoke harshly, not giving time for formalities. "My son…" he spoke in a devilish tone, "How nice of you to visit… How is your mother doing?" he asked.

This caused Zuko to pause for a moment, unsure what he meant by that. But Ozai continued, "Yes I know all about her return and your almost demise, such a pity really" he spoke, demeaning his son.

"How do you know about that?" he asked him. Ozai cackled, "I hear of everything my son… just like how your little waterbender slut ran off to save the day, how sweet"

Zuko clenched his fists, wanting to punch him for how he spoke of Katara. But she grabbed his fist before he could react and gave him a small shake of her head. They had to be stealthy about this and they couldn't draw attention. And to be fair, the more blood in his body the better.

"It's time…" the Fire Lord spoke, causing everyone to jump to attention. Katara widened her stance and brought her hands out in front of her. She closed her eyes and put all of her focus on finding the moon, even when she couldn't feel all of its strength, she knew it was there.

She felt herself reaching inside of his body, feeling the blood that coursed through his veins. Everything in her wanted to take his heart and squeeze, finishing him off for good. But that would mean all of Aang's work would be for nothing. All of this would mean nothing.

She took a hold of his limbs and brought him to stand. They all watched the terrified look on his face, when his body was no longer his own. Zuko looked to Toph and nodded, within a second, they were all below the ground.

They were in a long dark tunnel that Toph and Aang had constructed to the new cell. As they moved, they would collapse the rock behind them, leaving them no room to be followed.

Zuko lit a fire in the palm of his hand and led the way, making sure to keep Katara right next to him. He wanted to catch her if she fell, but more importantly catch Ozai. The last thing they needed was for him to escape somehow. Toph and Aang held up behind them. The younger earthbender kept looking to the Avatar, hoping he would talk to her about what he saw back at the palace.

But she also knew him better. She knew he would not let his emotions phase him until the task was over. That was how he had grown up. When they were traveling the world, Aang would've broke down and let it destroy him.

But he held his head high and made sure that nothing would stop them.

Dun DUN DUUUNNNN! Uh oh Aang found out about Zuko and Katara! But there are bigger matters to face! What will happen next? Stay tuned! Until next time!
