Weiss
"Did you hear about last night's game?"
"Tyrian Callows and Clover Ebi?"
"Yeah, I heard they threw down!"
"No way?!"
"Yes way! Dude, the Mistral Stingers' psycho put Vale's hotshot into a chokehold. It's all over the Internet. Like all over. Clover's face is the new meme!"
The talk about Tyrian and Clover wasn't just all over the Internet. It was the hottest gossip in school. I had no idea who those two were, but apparently they were one of the few iconic players in the men basketball league.
But the drama between the two major league basketball players didn't strike my interest. Not when most of my thoughts kept coming back to the incident between me and Ruby at her house.
Day and night, I had been pondering all sorts of scenarios that could've gone wrong, or maybe right. I thought about the hypothetical 'what if's'. The more I imagined about the scenarios, the more I frequently pictured myself accepting Ruby's confession and our little accident escalating to new levels. It made my heart flutter, and knowing my heart fluttered scared me.
It meant I had something there for her.
I sighed to myself and stared off into the school yard, aimlessly watching students interact. I wasn't sure what I should do with all of this information. I couldn't deny it, and it was silly too. I rejected her in the first place...
"Cardin!" One of my classmates shouted as she caught up to him. "Shouldn't we practice at least? The match is after school."
"Hah?!" Cardin turned around with a basketball tucked underneath his arm. "What for, Rabbit?"
"Because you begged — "
Cardin snorted. "I don't beg."
"You politely dragged me onto your team," the girl rolled her eyes. "And, I'm not even good at basketball. Shouldn't you find someone better? Like, I don't know, Coco?"
"That ball hogger? Heck no," Cardin scoffed which prompted another eye roll from the girl. "If you think you're going to drag us down during the game, don't worry about it." From his tall height, he petted her head like some kind of house pet while carrying a smug smile on his face. "Those Signal losers got nothing on Russel and I. You wouldn't need to lift a finger in the game."
"Wait… So what am I supposed to do?"
"Stand there, stupid."
"That's it? I don't want to do that."
"What? Why not?"
"It's boring."
"It requires talent."
"Can't we shoot around a bit?"
"No."
"Come on."
"Leave me alone."
"Don't be such a child."
"No."
"Cardin."
"Ugh, fine. Here, take the ball." He tossed it to the girl but the ball slipped from her hands. He slapped a hand to his face after seeing something so utterly pathetic. "What kind of rabbit has butterfingers?!"
The ball rolled across the yard, and I zoned out from my thoughts when the basketball tapped my feet. I picked it up and bounced it back to the owner who came to retrieve it.
"Sorry about that Weiss!" She caught it this time around.
I smiled at her. "That's okay, Velvet."
