Ruby
Sorry Weiss, I won't be able to see you after school today. Something came up.
And… Text message sent.
It took no more than a few seconds for my phone to buzz again.
Weiss: I hope it's nothing bad.
My lips splitted into a smile. It was cute to see Weiss concerned about me.
Ruby: My friend asked for a favor.
Weiss: Oh, okay. Have fun then. Maybe we can hang out next time. I don't know, maybe grab ice cream?
The idea of grabbing ice cream with Weiss again brightened my mood, but Yang flicking me on the forehead ruined it.
"Stop smiling," she said. "It's already bright in here as it is."
I hissed at my cousin and pulled away from her. "I'm not smiling," I denied, slapping a frown on top of my smile to prove it to her. I returned to my phone and promptly replied back to Weiss. My lips traitorously broke into a smile again when we texted back and forth.
"So today's match will be held at Beacon High," Jaune informed us before bringing a fork full of food to his mouth. It was lunch, and we were gathered at a table with our food. It was just me, Yang, Jaune, and Sun.
"Okay, cool." I shrugged it off. My mind had been filled with nothing but Weiss. She was texting unusually a lot more during school hours, but I didn't mind. It made me happier.
"And… We lost Ruby," Yang said.
"Who is she talking to?" Sun asked.
"Someone more important than us."
"Ouch."
"Bro…"
"Not true!" I chimed in without sparing them a glance. It was a white lie.
"So any plans on winning?" Yang switched the subject.
"Got any gameplays, Jaune?" Sun jabbed him.
"Nah, just play well." He said, shrugging. "Especially you, Sun." He pointed his fork at him. "No half court shots."
"What? Me? How about Ruby?"
The table had suddenly gone quiet, but I was too busy smiling at one of Weiss' text messages to even notice.
"I told you we lost my cousin."
"Hey, you think she would notice if her yogurt goes missing?"
"Jaune, stop being a pig."
"Shut up, Sun. I'm a healthy growing boy."
"Uhh… When did the school start serving yogurt for lunch?" Yang asked, her voice growing suspicious, and yet, curious.
"Dunno," Sun said. "I never got one. Hey, are you really going to eat her yogurt?"
"Yup! Ruby didn't even notice her yogurt disappearing."
The table went quiet again for a moment, and I quickly thumbed out a message to Weiss asking her what she was doing right now.
"See, told you." Jaune laughed. "This yogurt is all mine."
"I'm starting to think that Ruby actually brought the yogurt from home…" Yang muttered hesitantly.
"Hmmm?" Jaune mumbled with a mouth full of yogurt. "What's wrong about that?"
"A lot of wrongs actually…"
I finally tuned into their conversation and glanced down to my lunch tray after Weiss texted me she suddenly had to go. I narrowed my eyes when my yogurt had vanished.
"Which one of you jacked my yogurt?" Of course it wasn't hard to figure out who stole my food when there was an empty container of yogurt laid out in plain sight. "Jaune! That was supposed to be mine. I brought that from home."
"Sorry, it's all in my stomach now."
"Uh Jaune…" Yang laughed nervously. "I don't think that yogurt is edible."
"Huh?"
"Check the expiration date on that yogurt."
He searched all sides for the expiration date. Once he found it, his eyes flew wide. "Expired last year?! What the heck? Oh god, I'm going to die."
"Dude," Sun swung his head over to me in shock. "Why do you keep expired yogurt in your home fridge?"
I meekly shrugged. "I thought my mom tossed it out. I guess she missed one."
"Yang, am I going to die?" Jaune slumped over the table and started to act very sickly. "I might have tasted something fuzzy. I think my stomach is gurgling."
"You okay?" Sun looked at him with concern.
"I don't know… I think — hrrgh." Jaune clamped his mouth shut.
"That was fast…"
"Oh no…" I started scooting away from him. "Here comes Vomit Boy."
Jaune scurried from the table and we watched him book it out of the cafeteria.
"I think Jaune might have food poisoning…" Sun said with a wince. "Should we find a replacement for him?"
"Is that allowed?" I asked.
"I don't see why not… Who should be the third member to our team?"
Yang frantically pointed at herself, but I looked past her.
"How about that blue haired guy?" I said, looking directly at the table on the other side of the cafeteria.
"L-Let's not…"
"Why not?" I asked. "You know him and he's on the basketball team."
Yang snorted. "That's the guy who gave Sun the umbrel — "
"Yang," Sun cut in. "A position opened up. Want to join our team?"
"Heck yeah!"
