Being shot sucked, Daniel thought to himself as he inspected his left shoulder, careful not to jostle the sling too much. Movies certainly don't do it justice. There were many times he'd almost ended up with a bullet inside him, but his fast reflexes from the Police Academy saved him. However, sometimes reflexes weren't enough.
Two days. It had been two days since the fiasco that Christmas night. The night he saved another cop from getting killed and took the bullet himself. But the bastard that shot him got away. Don't get him wrong. He doesn't regret it. If he could, he'd do it again. Just maybe not get shot next time.
Daniel sighed, settling back against the fluffy pillow of the hospital bed. His eyes closed in boredom. There wasn't much he could do and since he woke up, which was around noon, his parents and some of the officers from the precinct, including the cop he saved, Stevenson, had been by to see him when they could. It had been awkward for him when Steveson thanked him.
The door opened and his nurse stepped in. Daniel opened his eyes, looking at her.
"Nurse." He greeted. She was a nice lady. Cute too. But she didn't reply. "Is there-" The brunet officer cut himself off when a familiar red tipped silver haired female came in after the nurse. "Selena?"
Selena looked at the nurse, gesturing her head towards the door. The nurse nodded and left. Now alone, she strided closer.
"You got shot." Her voice, while husky and cold, helds tendrils of something darker beneath it that made a light shudder go down Daniel's spine. Selena stopped next to his bed. Her arms were crossed, posture tense enough to pass for a statue. He wondered how she knew he was hurt and where he was, so he asked her. "The media, while they are annoying, are good at supplying information."
"Oh." Daniel said, processing that information. "Still doesn't explain how you knew where I was."
"I took a guess and asked around." A blunt answer that made way too much sense. "You are lucky to be alive."
Daniel let out a weak chuckle. "So everybody keeps telling me. Why are you here, Selena? Were you worried?"
"Of course. I will not let you die while you still have some use to me."
Daniel tried to hide the hurt those words brought, but judging by Selena's soft sigh, he didn't hide it well enough. Embarrassment welled up inside him. He shouldn't be feeling hurt. They barely had a friendship, if you could call it that, aside from the random riddles and codes.
"I apologize." She said, arms shifting. "What I meant was...Despite being one of those dogs, you are pleasant to be around."
"That's, um, that's good to hear."
He noticed her body relax slightly. It wasn't much, but Daniel counted it as a win. Her arms dropped to her side and she reached out. He stiffened as she leaned in, her fingers lightly touching his bandaged shoulder in a caress. Her hair brushed against his face and he could smell a sort of earthy fragrance coming from it.
"Take good care of yourself, Herbivore." A dash of yellow flickered from a space between her bangs as her tone held an unknown emotion. "You only have this one life to live."
He blinked and Selena was suddenly already moving towards the door. Confusion colored his expression as he watched her open the door, pausing briefly to look at him in a pensive silence before walking out. The door closed behind her with a soft click, leaving him to his thoughts once again.
What the hell just happened?

To kill or not to kill? That is the question.
Shakespear would either be appalled or inspired at the butchuring of one of his quotes. But there was one thing he would most definitely be inspired by. The concept of one hand, it could take over someone until they are a puppet to it. On the other hand, one could control it and with the right tools, it could be deadly for one's enemies. The latter is where Selena sat currently.
Did she want to risk the police or worse, the FBI making a connection to the Cheshire Cat and Daniel if she killed the shooter? No, she did not. Daniel was innocent and she'd rather not condemn him more than she already has just by associating with him. This act of revenge must be done without her usual M.O. She's have to make the police think the shooter either commited suicide-which wouldn't be too suspicious, considering he shot a cop and the whole force would be on his trail in retaliation-or make them think an outside force got to him first. A fight gone bad between the shooter and an accomplice, perhaps? Whatever she did, she'd have to do it neatly.
A pity, really. She and Cheshire were all for making him scream. Slice open his belly and make him watch as she showed him the contents of his insides one by one.
If it was any other cop, she wouldn't have given a damn, but she had claimed Daniel under her protection and therefore anyone that harmed him would be dealt with mercilessly.

"Is this where he's hiding?"
Wyatt nodded. The two were standing in front of a cheap looking motel. He had tracked down the shooter to this location on orders from Selena. While he was curious about the relationship between her and the police officer, he didn't ask questions in fear of turning her silent ire towards him.
Selena cocked her head to the side slightly, as if listening to something before glancing at him.
"Stay here."
"Do you want me to dispose of the body, afterwards?" Wyatt asked, masking his disappointment. He wanted to see her in action.
"No." With that, she disappeared.
Wyatt leaned against a nearby car, listening to the noises of the night.
"So, the heir to the throne is doing a little revenge seeking, is she?" Wyatt looked over to see a male police officer approaching him. The police officer's eyes went black. "Wyatt."
Wyatt gave him an impassive look. "Brent. Shouldn't you be keeping an eye on Turner."
Brent shrugged, stopping beside the other demon.
"He's not going anywhere tonight. Besides, I wanted to get a look at the next queen."
Bang! The two demons looked towards the motel as the loud sound resonated through the air like a firecracker being set off. A second later and Selena appeared in front of them, a small bit of blood on her otherwise spotless jacket.
Wyatt felt her gaze on him before it turned to Brent. And though he was still new to reading her body language, even he could pick up the spike of bloodlust that came from her. But instead of attacking, she just turned and stalked away. He quickly caught up to her before he was left behind.

"Good morning, Mr. Turner" The nurse said as she entered the room.
She was smiling. Daniel felt something uncoil in his stomach at the familiar smile. So different from the emotionless face from last night.
"Morning. Here to check my shoulder?" He asked, quirking a smile back. The nurse nodded, going to the counter and
"Yes. If everything is looking okay, you might be released tomorrow."
That brought relief to Daniel, though a string of apprehension was still there. He hoped everything was alright. He didn't want to retire this early. He was brought out of his thoughts by the nurse's exclamation.
"Oh, this is cute!" She cooed.
She was looking at a glass bird the size of her hand sitting on the counter. It wasn't a fancy looking thing. Its whole body colored in light and dark tones of browns with a line of black underneath the beak. Daniel thought it was a sparrow maybe. Even from where he was sitting, he could tell the artist put a lot of detail in it. It looked like it would move any second. "Did one of your visitors drop this little guy off yesterday?"
No. Daniel would've noticed if someone had brought an expensive and fragile looking glass bird.
"Want me to bring it to you?" She asked.
"Uh, yeah." Daniel replied, blinking. "If you don't mind?"
The nurse picked up the bird, cupping it in both hands. She paused and looked at it in slight bewilderment. Daniel noticed her expression.
"Is something wrong?"
"No." The nurse shakes her head, bewildered expression still on her face. "It's just that this is heavier than I thought it'd be and it's really cold." She walked over to Daniel and handed him the statue.
He blinked. She was right. This thing did have a little weight to it and it made his fingers tingle on the beginning stages of numbness just by touching it. Now that he thought about it. He had felt this sensation before, but where?
The image of a glass turkey went through his mind and he let out a small chuckle, making the nurse look at him curiously.
"I just remembered who left this." He didn't think Selena thought highly of him,but it was nice to know she tolerated his presence. This gift only enhanced the fact.
After the nurse had finished with his check up, she left and his parents and big brother came to visit. Daniel was staring at the bird in his lap, hands having gotten too cold to hold it any more. He looked up at them, a smile coming to his face.
"Hey, guys."
"Daniel, how are you?" His mom asked, pulling up a chair and sitting down in it.
"The nurse said everything is looking alright and I may be able to go home tomorrow."
"His mother smiled. "That's good, honey."
"What's with the bird, Daniel?" His dad asked, gesturing to said glass bird.
"It was a gift from a friend." Daniel replied, eyes unknowingly lighting up as he spoke.
"A friend, huh?" His dad hummed, giving him a knowing look.
A small blush rose to Daniel's cheeks and he coughed, making his brother smirk at his embarrassment.
"Does this friend happen to be of the opposite gender?" His brother, Finn teased. When his question was met with silence, his smirk got wider. "That's adorable. Little brother has a crush!~"
"I do not!" Daniel protested hotly, only to let out a small hiss as he accidently jostled his arm.
"Finn, stop messing with your brother. Daniel, be careful before your stay here is extended." His mom ordered sternly. "I'd like to meet this girl before we leave, though."
"Mom." Daniel groaned out. It sounded like a whine, but Daniel would deny it to his last breath.
"What? I just want to ask her where she got your gift from?"
"No. You want to interrogate her and embarrass me."
His mom put on an innocent expression, but none of the men were fooled.
"Besides, she's not in town anymore." He said. "Yesterday was the only time she could visit me.
"Oh." She said, disappointment in her tone. Then she brightened up. "Maybe you can text her."
"Ask her to send a picture." Finn interjected, but let out mock "ow" as his mom lightly hit him on the arm.
There was a knock at the door and the family looked towards it as it opened and Brent entered. Daniel gave a small wave.
"Brent. How's it going?"
"Going good, man." Brent replied, closing the door behind him. He approached the family, nodding in greeting. "Turner family."
"Hello, Brent. And please, I told you to call me Diana." His mom smiled.
Daniel shook his head. His parents liked Brent and treated him like he was part of the family so much, sometimes he wondered if Brent wasn't his long lost sibling or something.
"So, what are you doing here?" Daniel asked. "I know you didn't skip work to visit me. The chief would have your head if you did."
Brent shrugged. "What he doesn't know won't hurt him. But that's not the reason why I'm here." He grew serious and glanced at his parents and Finn. "It's about your shooter."
"Did they find him?" His dad asked, frowning darkly. His mom grabbed his hand, squeezing it.
"Yes." He ran a hand through his hair. "They found his body last night at a motel on the other side of town. Apparently he shot himself."
"His mother inhaled sharply and Daniel's eyes widened.
"What?" He exclaimed.
"Bastard took the coward's way out." Finn growled out, glaring at the floor.
Daniel didn't hear the rest of the conversation as he looked at the glass bird.
Could Selena have killed that man? No. She couldn't have known where he was hiding, but it was too much of a coincidence for his liking. It wasn't like it was something out of her league. She had killed before and done many other things that got her on the FBI's wanted list.
Okay. Say she had killed him. Did she do it as an act of revenge for him? Honestly, he didn't know if he should be terrified or gratified. He obviously didn't support taking the law into your own hands in such a brutal way. He's a cop, for crying out loud! However, he also wasn't blind to the stories of corrupt cops or the cops that didn't think the justice they were doing was enough.
But...He couldn't deny that he felt some kind of warmth because of her going that far for him.
Daniel hoped to God that didn't make him a twisted person.
"-Daniel!"
"Huh?" Daniel he's snapped towards his family and friend. They were looking at him with concern.
"Are you okay?" His mother asked. "You had a weird look on your face."
"I'm fine." He looked at Brent. "Are they sure it was suicide?"
"Brent nodded. "Yeah. Neighbors said they didn't see or hear anything but the shot and the only prints they could find on the gun was the shooter's. Why? You think there's some foul play going on?"
"No. Guy probably thought he had no other options."
Whether Selena killed him or not, what's done is done. Another wannabe criminal off the streets. He thought that, but the small guilt inside him thought otherwise.
A/N: A chapter in mostly Daniel's POV. Wasn't sure how to do it, but I eventually did. What do you think? Like it? Don't like it? Want more? Tell me in the reviews.
