Chapter 62 – Holy Andraste!
Fenris swore as he lightly jogged through the weather that had decided to pour onto Kirkwall. It was raining heavily and there were deep rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightening that tore through the sky. He cursed his lack of foresight as he was pretty much soaked through, the short fifteen minute journey to Hawke's had proved to be enough time to get him wishing he'd brought a cloak. He got to the garden wall and leapt over it easily then he realised that they weren't hiding any more so he had no need to sneak in. He sighed and shrugged a shoulder, habits were hard to break and it wouldn't matter for tonight. He grabbed hold of the trellis and started to climb up to her balcony. Something was wrong, he tilted his head he could feel Makatza's waves of mana through the doors. He looked into her room through the glass and he couldn't see her anywhere. Another flash of lightening lit up the balcony and he made the decision that he wasn't going to wait. She was definitely in her room he could feel it, he phased his hand and unlocked her balcony door letting himself in. He saw the puppies whining at the closet and he frowned, she was in there? As he got closer he was pretty sure that that's where she was hiding. Flicking his wet hair out his eyes he opened the wooden door and found her on the floor curled up with her head in her hands. 'My Katza?' He asks in confusion as she seemed to be muttering to herself. He knelt down and as he went to touch her a roll of thunder erupted through the city, Makatza whimpered and stifled a scream as her mana reacted and explosively threw everything that was around her away. Fenris was tossed across her room into her dresser, splintering the wood with a crash.
Garrett and Leandra jumped in their seats as they looked up towards Makatza's room as they heard a commotion, Leandra looked at her son in deep worry. 'It's okay, I'll go check,' he says motioning for her to stay in her seat and away from the danger. He grabs his staff and runs up the stairs crossing the landing to her room. He knocks on the door, 'Katza? Everything okay?' The door opens to a rather wet, less than pleased elf who had wood chips in his hair and shards of glass caught in his armour. 'Ah...is everything okay?'
'She does not like storms,' Fenris states.
'I see, I see, you need a hand?'
'No, I will probably take her back to mine as her room has suffered,' he says brushing his fingers through his hair. There was another pulse of mana that made both the men stumble at the door. 'Venhedis,' he scowls. 'Excuse me.'
'Yeah, no it's cool, just shout if you need me,' Garrett says simply as he leaves the elf to it. Fenris shuts the door and crosses the room to the remains of her dresser and began looking for a particular piece of jewellery. He caught sight of what he was looking for and picked it up shushing the puppies who were cowering under her bed.
'My Katza,' he says softly as he got nearer to her. She ignored him until he touched her shoulder and that's when she seemed to realise that he was there, she turned to look at him and that's when he saw that she had been sobbing. She was shaking and her eyes darted around as if expecting another peal of thunder at any moment. He takes her hand and softly slides on the bracelet dispelling her mana waves almost instantly. They were still noticeable while he was close but at least he wouldn't be thrown across the room again. 'come, my Katza,' he says as he begins to take off his breastplate and brush the glass and wood splinters from himself, once he thought he was reasonably clear of anything sharp he picked her up.
She was reluctant and shook her head as she realised that he wanted to take her out the closet, 'please, please, no,' she said through tears. It impaled at his heart to see her so frightened and so scared to leave the tiny safe haven that she had created for herself. He was a little more forceful and grabbed her upper arms, lifting her up like a small child as he took her over to the bed and put her onto his lap. She wrapped her arms around his back tightly and buried her head into his chest, he could feel her tears seeping through to his vest. Not that it mattered, he was already damp from the storm. He couldn't close the balcony doors as she had broken them so there was quite a harsh wind coming through the bedroom. He reached back and pulled her quilt around them cocooning them in a little warmth and dampening the noise from outside. 'I'm sorry,' she whispered as she trembled.
'I am not angry,' he assures, 'you have nothing to apologise for,' he stroked her hair and shushed her lightly. The pups nosed their way up and under the blanket, licking her hands for comfort. 'You will not be able to stay in this room tonight,' he murmurs as he looks around the mess that she she had created. Her closet door was completely destroyed and her vanity table would need serious repair. The glass in her balcony doors had been shattered and littered the floor dangerously, he mentally sighed.
'Today has sucked,' she mumbles into him. Wearing her bracelet made her feel a little more in control and everything was muffled so being in close proximity to Fenris and her pups made her fear abate a little. 'This was just the damn cherry on top.'
'On top of what?' Fenris asked confused which made her giggle and look up at him. He gave her a half smile in genuine pleasure as he loved the sound of her laugh, 'I would like to take you downstairs, away from this mess,' he says softly. He would come back to as to why she thought her day was unpleasant but for the moment he had more immediate issues to take care of.
'Okay,' she nodded. 'I haven't told Aunt Leandra yet... I tried to earlier but got interrupted. Could you carry Elgon or Ciere? I don't want them to walk through this mess I've created,' she says a little bit more confidently than she felt. 'I'll grab some clothes for you to get changed into, you're soaking,' she adds gingerly sliding off his lap and stepping around some of the wood. She kept glancing at the windows but for the moment the storm had abated. She didn't really want to be out of her safe spots but she had to be better than that, she could have seriously hurt Fenris or the puppies.
'Clothes? You have clothes for me here?' He asks as he manages to pick up both pups, one under each arm which they loved as they licked his face in glee much to his disgust. He cared for the wolves but it didn't mean that he wanted to be covered in saliva.
Picking her steps across the carpet she nodded, 'yes, I picked some up and had them delivered. I figured there was going to be a time when you needed a spare set. They're nothing much just some leggings and tops,' she says simply as she reaches her closet. 'I got the purest cotton blend I could find as I thought it would be kinder on your skin should you have to wear them when I'm not around,' she babbled distracting herself from her fear. She pulls out some hangers at the back and grabbed a black top and matching leggings, she paused for a moment and looked back at him. 'Do you have dry clothing at yours?' She asks.
'Somewhere,' he says, desperately trying to avoid Ciere's attempt to drown him in kisses. Makatza smiles a little and grabs another set just in case. He managed to open the door and put the puppies on the landing shooing them down the stairs as he went back over to Katza who had frozen in place having seen a flash of lightening light the room. Fenris placed his hand on her shoulders as they waited for the loud rumble of thunder that was bound to come, she looked up at him, her bottom lip trembling as she tried to hold back her tears. 'I am here, my Katza,' he says softly. She nods and closes her eyes, wishing that it was all over. In an attempt to distract her and take her mind off it all he leaned down and kissed her pulling her closer to him. It was a sweet and reassuring kiss as if he was trying to convey that she was in the safest place possible at this moment in time. Makatza fell into his embrace and barely tensed as she heard the thunder echo through the clouds. Fenris pulled away kissing her forehead and hugging her as the last rumbles disappeared.
'That worked,' she teases lightly. Fenris smirks as he picks her up not wanting her to risk her feet across her bedroom, she holds him tightly but as soon as they're on the landing she demands to be put down. 'With my bracelet on I'm not going to be healing you so I don't want you touching me more than you have to,' she explains as she wriggled out his grip. He raised a brow and grabbed her wrist as she began to walk towards the stairs.
'My Katza,' he says simply ignoring the pain in his fingers, she was right while she had her bracelet on he felt the memory and sting of pain on his skin as usual. 'I do not care about the pain, I will kiss, hold and love you regardless,' he whispers as he didn't know where Leandra was. 'You cannot stop me either,' he adds making her smile.
'Fool,' she says with half a sincere smile of humour. She was too aware that the storm around them hadn't ended and so she wouldn't fully relax but he was doing a good job of keeping her at a reasonable level. 'Stubborn elf,' she attempts to tease as she shifted the clothing she held under her arm.
'Stubborn spirit,' he replies as he gently lets her go the pain becoming a little too much. She smiles brightly and rolls her eyes as she begins to walk down the stairs to where Garrett and Leandra were reading next to the fire. Her puppies had found Bubble and were happily using him as the reluctant cushion he had become, she shook her head at the sight and forced a smile as Leandra go up.
'Darling, what happened? Oh! Fenris, I didn't know you were here! Look at you, you're drenched. Orana, could you go get one of the warm towels please?' She asks the young elf who had been sewing, she jumped up and nodded happily as she went about her appointed task. Fenris thanked the young woman as she returns and begins to dry his hair. Makatza hands him some of the dry clothing she'd brought down and directed him into the study so that he can change in private. 'Garrett said that you had had an accident?' Leandra says after thanking Orana. Her cousin grabbed Bodahn and Sandal and lead them upstairs so they could assess the damage and make basic repairs for the night.
'Oh, I um... I'm not great when it comes to storms... the noise and the... the wind... it really um...puts me on edge... it's the first storm since I came here,' she explains, 'with my mana...it kinda got stronger in the surge of energy and it reacts to my emotions... I caused a bit of an... I broke a few things,' she admits feeling like crap. 'Fenris put my bracelet on and it seems to have taken away most of the damaging waves. I kinda... I broke my closet and my... my balcony doors and I threw Fenris into my vanity...'
'Oh, darling, I'm sorry, I had no idea,' Leandra said giving her a warm hug. Makatza allows herself to be comforted, Leandra was the closest thing she had to a mother now and that's really all she wanted at this moment in time. Leandra kisses her head as she strokes her hair, 'are you going to be alright? Do you wish to stay in my room tonight?'
Makatza could have cried at the sentiment and instead sniffed and shook her head, 'no, thank you. I think Fenris wants to look after me tonight,' she said quietly. 'He'd only be worrying if I didn't let him,' she laughs lightly as she moves away. 'Thank you, Auntie.'
'Darling... I don't wish to pry... but that thing you wanted to speak to me about earlier, I am guessing that concerned Fenris,' she says as she brushes Makatza's hair from her face.
'Ah, yeah...' she nodded as she sniffed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. Fenris appeared out the study still drying his hair but now in dry clothing, he walked over to Makatza and smiled gently at Leandra. 'Fenris and I have decided to be together,' Makatza says a little shyly, Fenris places his hand on her shoulder lightly and hopes that Leandra will be kind. Her Aunt raises a brow as she looks at them both before her face lights up in happiness.
'Oh! Oh darling! Oh you sweet thing! Oh Fenris!' She says as she grabs the elf and gives him a tight squeeze before cupping his face and giving his cheeks a squidge. 'Oh you silly, silly man! I knew it,' she says wagging a finger at him, 'I knew you had a thing for my girl! Oh this is so lovely! Ah! This means there could be a wedding in the future!-'
'Auntie!' Makatza snaps going pink. 'Please! Let him go!' She says noticing the uncomfortable look on his face. Leandra laughs and does as she asks giving him one last squeeze. 'We've hidden it for a while because we didn't know what it was but we feel that it's serious enough to tell people,' she explains.
'It's just so wonderful, you know that I've always liked Fenris and I thought I had seen a change in him recently, you must be good for him-'
'Yes, people keep saying that,' Fenris says dryly as he rotates his jaw not really understanding what just happened to him.
Leandra didn't even seem to realise that he had spoken and had continued talking, '-it does mean that I'll have to answer a few awkward questions regarding your marital status but who am I to talk! I married an apostate!' She laughs. 'Oh, I suppose you will be staying with Fenris tonight?'
'Yes, if that's okay,' Makatza smiles, she was going to regardless of what her Aunt said but it was polite to ask. Leandra babbled on for a little longer before excusing herself as Garrett came down the stairs with a fair bit of wood and other things. 'Garrett, I'm sorry,' she mumbled feeling a little tense as she heard some of the storm outside, Fenris had placed a hand on her back in comfort once Leandra had let him go.
'I wouldn't worry,' her cousin said as Sandal and Bodahn came down behind him carrying similar items. 'When Bethany and I were learning to control our powers mother had to repair the curtains every week, minimum,' he smiles. 'Mother okay with this?' He asks pointing at the pair.
'Embarrassingly so,' Makatza smiles. 'Going on about weddings and children,' she blushes. 'I don't think we're quite there yet,' she smirks at Fenris who had widened his eyes a little in shock.
'Yeah you kinda need to have sex to get half of that,' Garrett laughs expecting Makatza to have a big reaction but instead her face just flushed a deeper red and stayed quiet. 'Fucking, flying Andraste's bloomers! You two have actually?-' He says before taking a step back in surprise. 'This fucking day! I thought I knew you both but apparently I have no fucking idea! Wait does Isabela know?'
'Uhh...' Makatza said as she bit her thumbnail, embarrassed to look at either her cousin or Fenris who had raised a brow in her direction. 'She knows... things...' she admits. 'Implied things...' Garrett laughs and rolls his eyes as Fenris exhales a little heavier than usual. 'Um, we're gonna go now... I don't want to talk about this any more... is it okay if the puppies stay here with Bubble?'
'Of course, be safe in this weather, don't have too much fun,' he teases kissing her temple lightly and nodding at Fenris before wandering into the kitchen with his arms full of wood. Makatza inhaled deeply and walked over to where her bag was hanging and put his clothing inside before going into the study to find some books. Fenris followed her and gently took her hand making her pause.
'My Katza, are you going to tell me what happened today?'
