The entire rest of the drive John barely managed to focus on the road.
He drove on instinct and muscle memory more than anything else. He was more aware of Mary who was sitting and sometimes bouncing in her seat. Whenever he did chance a glance at her she met his eyes with a smile. She looked like the cat that had gotten both the canary and the cream.
He wasn't going to lie, he did want to. There were parts of him that were really, really excited about the possibility of what was going to happen.
But he had to be mature about this. He had to be the adult of this...could it be called a relationship? Whatever it was that they had?
What was it that they had? What was this...whole thing between him and Mary? He knew that he was the only real man in her life that meant something, in all honesty he was the only adult excluding Bobby.
Was he just a convenient and only option that she had and therefore she was latching onto? Did she know that she had other choices and options? That she didn't need to just settle for him.
That he really didn't deserve her.
Breathing out slowly he tried to focus on the road again, tried to take his mind off what might be attempted tonight.
He needs to get her more people to talk to, she needed more people to talk to other than him, Dean, and Bobby. Preferably someone female just to give her a woman's perspective on life and everything else.
He thought about his mother for a moment with a tight chest. He didn't manage to talk to her that often and he wished that he could, but this was something he couldn't ask of her.
The only other woman he could think of that could possibly help was Ellen Barkin, soon to be Harvelle. She was a rough and tough hunter but she also had a heart of gold and he knew that if he introduced her to Mary, the other woman would take her under her wing and help her out.
Ellen could do a lot more for Mary than he could.
He'd give her a call when they reached the motel and explain the situation to her. Then once this hunt is over and they pick the boys up again they could go to the Harvelles and kill a few birds with one stone.
Mary would have a female friend to talk to and learn from, the boys would have another place to explore, and he also knew that Bill was a lot softer than he looked and he had a feeling the boys would love him too.
And he'd get a chance to have some adult interaction as well, that was something he needed.
The next few steps, at least after the hunt, settled in his mind John nodded and allowed himself to focus on the road completely again, thankful that he was a good enough driver to let his mind wander when driving.
They finally reached the town and John drove them into the first motel that he saw. Thankfully there was a diner across the street as well so they could easily grab a bite to eat. He parked the car and went into the office, hesitating when he tried to decide whether to get a double or a single bed.
Logically he knew that it would be better to get a double, give them each their own space.
But at the same time he knew that no matter what, she was going to crawl into bed with him because she liked to sleep in the same bed as him and she liked to cuddle.
He couldn't say no to that, he was only human in the end.
So he got them the single bed and resigned himself to a bit of a sleepless few nights.
Going back outside Mary had gotten their bags out of the trunk, looking at him and smiling. John managed to return the smile and reached for the bags, leading them to their room, feeling oddly nervous suddenly.
They were going to go into their room, they were going to get something to eat, and John was going to lay down the rules and regulations. He was going to be the mature adult about it and rise above what his body was telling him to do.
He was.
Entering the room John breathed out slowly as he set the bags on the ground, steeling himself.
"Mary, would you like to get something to eat at-" he started to say only for his words to be cut off.
Because the second he turned around Mary...pounced, there was no other word for it. She wrapped her arms around him and leaned in to kiss him, not giving him a moment to even catch his breath or let his mind catch up with what was happening.
John placed his hands on her hips to try to push her away to be able to speak but Mary tightened her grip around himself instead, not letting him move her.
Finally he managed to wrench his head away, just enough to gasp in a breath and speak. "Mary, we shouldn't jump into this," he tried to get out, only for Mary to lean in and kiss him again, rolling her hips against his.
"No boys, just you, just me." Mary murmured in between the kisses. "Just you. Just me."
