Cardin's character short: Resolve
(Location: somewhere in the Anima continent Kingdom of Mistral Remnant)
Bumblebee was speeding through the forest. Yang was smiling, how much she loves riding her bike. Specially in new places she was aware that if she keeps this up she will have to refill the gas tank. Her dad did told her there are gas stations somewhere in the continent. Behind her stood Cardin who wasn't looking happy in the least. He lost count how long they've been traveling, he was frustrated. A reminded would be nice as to why he decided to join the blond brawler on this crazy trip. It's not like he had anything better to do. If he hadn't left Patch with her, he would have gone to Vale with his mother. Helping her with the reconstruction of Beacon, among other things. Then again, Trisha wanted him to go with the blond. She didn't told him but he could tell by her expression when he last spoke to her. Because she wanted him to spend time with Yang, her attempt at hooking him up with the brawler.
Seriously why do mothers have to play cupid on their kids. It's not like he thought Yang is unattractive when it's the complete opposite. In the words of any teenage boy, the blond is drop dead gorgeous and hot, literally. The Winchester remembers her hair glows and becomes fire whenever she uses her semblance. But getting back on topic he gave a sigh knowing where this was going. Actually, that was the big deal. The teen poke Yang's shoulder to get her attention because he didn't wanted to yell. The blond gazed at him from the corner of her eyes not taking her eyes from the road. He signaled her to stop and she complied, which it was strange. The bike decreased speed as it stopped. Cardin gazed at one of the trees, he sweat dropped he was right all along. Why was this girl so stubborn and just listen to him.
"Why are we stopping?"
"Shouldn't it be obvious? We're lost."
"No, we're not. I know-"
"No, you don't know where you're going. You have said that for like three times already."
"We're saving time, what's the big deal Cardin?"
"The big deal is, you don't know where you're going. This is the fourth time we passed this tree!"
"How can you tell?"
"Because I marked it!" he pointed to the large scar on the tree" that's how I can tell. We're going around in circles, we're lost. Admit that you need help."
"And I'm guessing you're the help I need?" smirked the brawler.
"Yes, thanks for pointing it out. I do have a map for the second time and our scrolls have a compass feature that tells us which direction to go. I bet you knew."
"Okay Mr. Know it all where do we go?"
"First, we leave this place" he checked his scroll" we've been going south this entire time. Didn't you said your mom's tribe is west of Anima?"
"Right. So west, is that way?" Yang pointed to the same direction they've been going all along.
"Actually, it's that way" the Winchester pointed to a whole new direction" how about you let me be your guide so we can actually make time?"
Before Yang could say anything, roars echoed through the woods. Both teens have taken their weapons the sound could only mean one thing.
"We should go" commented the Winchester.
The blond brawler couldn't react in time as from the trees emerged a pack of Berringel. Cardin got off the bike to fight some of the gorilla Grimm out. Yang used her shot gun gauntlets. This fight was pointless, they had transportation. Bumblebee can out speed these guys. But the former leader was still fighting them. Maybe she can get their attention away from him. The brawler rev the engine of her bike making a loud noise. It definitely got their attention.
"Get to safety, I'll lead them away!"
"Are you crazy?!" why bothered ask the question.
Too late, the blond was off as some of the Berringel went after her. The rest decided to stay and keep Cardin company. Now, he was in a bad mood. Not just he chose to go with Yang on this insane trip, but she was calling the shots ignoring him the one with the map and the only one who knows where to go. But she also has the nerve to ditched him, it angered him. Lucky for him there were plenty of Grimm for him to use as stress relief. Berringel are known for their impressive strength but not that fast. The Winchester released a combo with his cross whip infusing it with ice dust. Many were frozen others dodged. A few emerged from the woods, the more the merrier he didn't had a problem. Using his semblance to increase his strength he performed a roll that hit every single Grimm ripping them in half. That was all of them, he would have been in serious trouble without his mother's training.
"That's one less pain in the ass out of the way. I can't believe she LEFT ME!"
Shouting would only bring more Grimm, not a good idea. He didn't know what to do. If he leaves, Yang might not be able to find him. If he stays, he could be putting himself in danger. There could be more Berringel out there. So, both options are bad. Taking his scroll obviously no signal, so he tried to text her. And he couldn't either, great just what he needs to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Still, he didn't know what is the good choice to take. Leave or stay. Yang has probably lost those Berringel by now so she could be on her way here any minute. That is, if she doesn't get lost. That's right he still has the map of Anima and he doubted she will check the compass either. Cardin gave a sigh walking to a near by tree, getting seated looks like he was staying after all. The Huntsman in training decided to clean his weapon and make sure it works for it's next use.
He was in deep thought, he has come a long way from the person he used to be. It wasn't that long he chose to become a Huntsman without knowing the true meaning behind it. Guess he was too young and stupid to know. Cardin's home is a small city near the capital of Vale. Because it was very close to the city, it had security with a boarder to prevent Grimm from crossing. He was just the average kid, born in a loving home with wonderful parents. His mother became an exceptional Huntress while his father was nicknamed Mr. Handyman by Trisha. The reason, because he knew what to do in any kind of situation. Carl Winchester will fix anything and come up with any ideas that can help the house. So while his wife was out fighting Grimm, he will be fighting with the food, cleaning and other maintenance. Cardin had so much respect for him. Though he wasn't a fighter, he was his hero.
At first the young Winchester was worried his old man would be sad or upset telling him he wanted to be a Huntsman too. But instead he smiled, hugged him and told him the four words" I'm proud of you". His childhood was nice had a few friends here and there. But just like any other kid, he had his bullies. Ironically those bullies were faunus. Apparently it was the way their parents raised them. Thinking they are superior because they have animal traits and seeing in the dark. They wouldn't make friends with humans so instead, they would bully them making them feel better of themselves. Cardin didn't had anything personal against them or faunus in general except, those kids were annoying. It was why he'd prefer to stay in his house and read. Then Carl bought him that book that gave him so much inspiration to become a Huntsman. He wanted to become like the protagonist.
As he grew his mother took him under her wing training him. It was a real pain, remembering how much his body will ache after a session. Trisha didn't go easy on him giving him one of her lectures. He needed to be strong and on shape if he wants to become a Huntsman. Knowledge was also important so she encourage to attend one of the four Huntsman schools. Beacon was the closest so the young Winchester has already made up his mind for a while. Through the hardships and the pain, he was able to survived. After all, the woman gave him breaks helping him in any way she could. When he told her about the book, his source of inspiration Trisha was so happy for him. Even Carl would watched them both training when he was available. Cardin was happy with this life, best parents, a nice home and a vision to become a Huntsman and be part of one of the most prestigious schools in Remnant.
Cardin's eyes narrowed resuming cleaning his weapon. He had the perfect home except, not everything was perfect as he thought. The neighbors were nice but, there was one who excels the others. The next door neighbor called Jekyll Cobalt, he's a faunus. A snake faunus. The only animal traits were the eyes and the tongue which makes him very creepy. He will sound like one whenever he speaks, really creepy. But he was a nice person, very kind sometimes he will bring treats to the Winchester family. Sometimes his father would invite him for dinner and they will talk about all kinds of topics. It didn't bothered the young Winchester, Jekyll was fine in his book. He will eventually learn that looks can be deceiving specially from a snake faunus. His eyes narrowed harder as the anger was rising from within. He will never forget that day, it was in his mind as it happened yesterday.
It was four years ago when he was fourteen. It seemed like a regular day. Trisha had to go because she had a mission. He was on his room reading his favorite book, his father told him he was going to check up on Jekyll because he was hearing strange noises from his house. For some reason, Cardin didn't like it he had a bad feeling. Something in his mind was telling him that something was wrong. Carl left their home knocking on the front door of their neighbor worried for Jekyll's safety. There was no response, but the noises could still be heard. It was coming from the cellar. The older Winchester thought he should let it be. But if this keeps up the other neighbors will star complaining of the noise. So he knocked on the cellar door, hoping Jekyll will listen knocking a couple of times, the noise finally stopped. Cardin was done cleaning his weapon as he glared on that day that changed his life forever.
The fourteen year old Cardin kept on knocking on the front door but there no answer. He chose to follow the noises coming from somewhere of the house. It was getting louder as he searched through it, realizing it was coming from the cellar. There was no lock, so the teen opened the doors climbing down the stairs. What he saw made him gasped, eyes widened in shock. Carl was tied to a chair with his mouth covered with a piece of cloth. He was covered in bruises and wounds, must have taken a beating. Jekyll the snake faunus was working on something that was on a small table, the young Winchester had no idea what it was. But he panicked seeing his father in such state. What was going on, why was their neighbor and most trusted friend doing this. It was too late to do anything as the faunus noticed him. He glared at the teen while shaking his head.
"Damn it, I knew I forgot something. Should have lock the damn door."
"Father!"
The man only muffled with his mouth covered as Jekyll laughed.
"He's a little tied up at the moment Cardin. You really shouldn't have come here."
"What are you doing? Let my dad go!"
"Sorry to disappoint you but you're in no position to be making demands."
The snake faunus has taken a gun pointing it at the teen. Carl lost his mind trying to break as he made the chair he was tied up to fall.
"Better behave Carl, or your boy might end up with a hole on his head."
The young Winchester was scared, trying to muster some courage but he couldn't. Sure his aura was unlocked when he was younger but getting shot would still hurt and put his life at risk. Jekyll was grinning evilly as he removed the cloth from Carl's mouth.
"Please, I beg of you let him go. He has nothing to with this Jekyll just-"
"Aw too bad, I can't do that. Now that's he's here he's a witness and might try to spoil my plan. But I don't blame the poor thing. Because this is all your fault. If you hadn't stick your noses where it doesn't belong none of this would have happened."
"I didn't mean it. I heard the noises and I thought you were in trouble, I was worried…."
"So naive, thinking I would care for you and your family. You have no idea how disgusted I've always being whenever I will see you. I have to pretend to be all nice, it sickens me to my stomach."
"What are you talking about?" asked the shock Cardin.
"Time for a little lesson. Not all faunus are fond of humans. I have always hated your kind and for me the only good human is a dead one. Sometimes, it's better to fit in with the crowd before unleashing your fangs" he gazed at the device that was on the table.
"After weeks and months I finally built it. My invention that will help cleanse humans from this world" he chuckled evilly.
Both Carl and his son were so shocked at their neighbor. He looked so different nothing to the person he used to be. He was always kind and caring. Heck, he even invited the family to his home for dinner on many occasions. How can he not really care for them. How can it be hard to believe that he hates humans. But this person was completely insane. A man who has lost his sanity just by his expression and that look in his eyes. Cardin was about to walk to his father before the faunus reminded him pointing the gun making him halt on his steps. Still, he fired as the bullet landed almost near him. The young Winchester gasped along with Carl.
"That was a warning shot. You get any closer and the next one goes to your brain."
"Just what do you want?!" asked the older Winchester.
"I suppose I can tell you. My little invention is a bomb, high tech too. It took me so long to find the right parts. It just need a few touches and it will be done. There's going to be quite the party when this bad boy hits the central square plaza."
Both father and son were so shocked. This guy was planning to place a bomb that would take how many lives. A terrorist attack. It was so hard to believe their neighbor who has been friends with for so long is really a crazy terrorist.
"You can't be serious!" Carl was outraged" you won't be just killing humans but faunus too!"
"Hmm...Oh well, if faunus get caught in the explosion it can't be help. There has to be collateral damage."
"Jekyll, you don't have to do this. I know deep down you can be reasonable, no one has to die."
"I disagree, they have to die because I want to" he grinned" you should have look deeper into my, history."
Cardin has finally had it as he charged right at the snake faunus. His father tried to stop him but there was nothing he could do tied up. His attempt at breaking free wasn't for nothing as he has managed to removed some of the rope on his arms. His legs were still tied. The young Winchester tackled the faunus fighting to remove the gun from his hands. Jekyll only laughed at his attempt, did he had a death wish. He punched the teen a couple of times before kicking him as he was now on the ground. The teen cursed, he should have brought his weapon with him. Now, he was at the mercy of this madman. He was met by the tip of the barrel of his gun he didn't care, he wanted to save his father. Carl was glaring at the snake faunus with pure hatred. Nobody lays a hand on his family.
"It seems your boy is eager to die, Carl. Should I fulfill his demand?"
The older Winchester was able to break free tackling the faunus beating him up. Cardin got off watching his old man teaching him a lesson. He wanted to give him a hand but the expression on his face made him think otherwise. This was the first time he has seen him so angry. He couldn't blame him, he trusted Jekyll as a close friend only to be betrayed and find out he was nothing but a psychopath. He messed with his son that was his biggest mistake. The sound of the gun shot caught his attention as the teen's eyes widened. The snake faunus was grinning as he pulled the trigger hitting Carl on his chest. So much blood has come out as the faunus pushed him off getting up.
"DAD!"
"It's meant to happen. After all, you're both witnesses to my plan. I have to get rid of both of you."
"You bastard!"
Cardin landed a punch on his face as hard as he could. He was on the ground as the teen quickly grabbed the gun pointing at him. So much hatred in his eyes while his father was still wounded.
"A feisty one, eh?" Jekyll kept grinning.
"Don't! Don't do it son."
"Why not?! Look what he did to you, look what he's planning to do. He's better of dead."
"You don't have it in you Cardin. Have you ever kill someone before? Good or bad it's all the same. You don't have the nerve, nor the will or the conviction to pull that trigger" said the snake faunus.
"Shut up!"
"Listen to me son. If you shoot him, you'll be no better than him. Jekyll is too far gone but not you. Once you pull that trigger there's no going back. You're a better person than he'll ever be."
"He's right, you know. Not all faunus are like me but there are those that carries a big grudge against humans. Our kind have been treated like slaves for many years. And many of them want payback, many who want to see them suffer. If you think you have what it takes then go ahead, pull the trigger I dare you."
"Cardin no…."
The teen glared while he was in tears, his hand holding the gun shaking. He was planning to become a Huntsman, those who protect the people and slay Grimm. But protecting scum like this worth it. Or faunus who are like him. The ones who bullied him because they think they're better than everyone else. He wanted to do it, he was so close. But in the end, he just couldn't. Jekyll was right after all. As the snake faunus took the chance to get up and snatched the gun from him.
"Pitiful Cardin, you're just weak like your daddy. Unlike you, I have it in me!" he was ready to pull the trigger.
The young Winchester braced for the worse as Carl finally broke free and tackled the faunus. Three more shots were fired as the teen stood horrified. His father has been shoot those three times. So much blood that he fell on the ground ready to die. Something inside of him snapped as he charged at the faunus and started beating him up. Punching his face until Jekyll was all bloodied and his face was deformed. When he got tired he quickly went to his old man. The man was coughing so much blood, his time was running out. Cardin was on tears trying to do something only to receive a caress on his cheek. Carl has given a weak smile, before he closed his eyes life leaving his body no last words. The young Winchester gave a cry of agony.
Cardin threw his cross whip so hard it destroyed a big tree in half. His anger flared up just thinking about that day. After his father's death all the noise and gun shots got the attention of the rest of the neighborhood that they eventually called the police. Jekyll Cobalt was arrested turns out he has a record for massacring people with bombs. He's nicknamed "The Mad Bomber". As he was sent to the police car he turned to him telling him he will return. Those were the snake faunus last words after not seeing him again for four years. Hopefully he died a slow and painful death in his cell, not caring where he was. He hated himself for being weak at that time, he hated himself for not pulling the trigger when he had the chance. Because if he did, his father would still be alive to this day. The psycho get to say last words, but not his old man who he look out the most. Mr. Handy to the rescue even when he wasn't a fighter.
But he was, he was trained by his mother and he failed to protect him. He froze in fear seeing that bastard holding the gun. He had the gun and couldn't fire it. It was a mistake he will have to live for the rest of his life. When Trisha returned from her mission she was devastated to learn what has happened to her husband. She shed her tears but kept a strong front for the sake of her son, hugging him and eventually she broke down. Apologizing wishing she was here for them. Cardin cried so much but reached a limit where he stopped. He kept thinking of doing the right thing and shooting Jekyll. But why hesitate when his and his father's life were at risk. When so many people were also involve if the bomb would have been finished. The guilt has stay with him for four years. He will never forget it, how he wished his father has said something instead of smiling.
Three years later he finished his training with his mother. And in those years, he changed. His view on faunus changed from not caring about them, to hating them. Those kids that used to bully him, he became their bully and taught them a lesson. Showing them who's really superior. He couldn't trust a single one not after what happened to his old man. He was killed because of a faunus he used to trust and because of his lack of resolve to do the right thing. Putting Jekyll out of his misery what he should have done. Then he bought that mace changing his weapon, another mistake making sure Trisha never finds out but she did anyway. She wasn't happy that he was leaving for Beacon with a weapon he had no knowledge about and didn't know how to use it. But she knew he was going through a lot after Carl's passing. She wished him the best and to try and make a better life for himself.
Cardin walked over to the tree he destroyed damn, that was a strong one and he didn't used his semblance. Memories when he started at the school flooded his mind. The initiation, the birth of Team CRDL, his treatment on the faunus mainly Velvet Scarlatina of CFVY. Screwing up as a leader, disappointing Velvet and that tragedy where his team got killed by the Grimm dragon Hellkite and he lost a leg and an eye. He failed his teammates, just like his father. Spending days in Vale Hospital before being send to Atlas. Pietro Polendina motivated him to give his tech a chance, assuring him he will feel like a new person. He wasn't kidding. His mother was overjoyed with his recovery and at the same time the Winchester felt like something was missing. Being the person he chose to become after his father's murder made him make so many mistakes that changed his life for the worse.
His pride, his teammates the people around him. Just what was the point of wanting to be a Huntsman in the first place. That's when he did some serious thinking and reflecting. What can he do now, what was needed to do. The teen chose to seek answers as he resume training with Trisha to sharpen his skills with a whip finally getting rid of that silly mace. Then, he remembered the book he used to read when he was young. The damage was done and there was nothing he could for the people he lost. But there was still something that can be done for others that need help. That's why he wanted to be a Huntsman, not the fame or glory, just the duty to fight for the sake of those that can't defend themselves. Be the people's guardian in their stead, fight and protect them. When he heard about Beacon being under attack he didn't hesitated to go. He can do something about it and maybe, find the answers he's been looking for.
By now Cardin was in tears, he had no idea how long has it been since Yang left. Finding out about Salem, the Maidens, the relics he felt like he needed to fight. Remnant was in greater danger than he thought, the Grimm isn't the big enemy. Why he chose to help the blond brawler on her recovery, it was the right thing to do. He knew how she feels losing part of yourself and being under depression. But she still has her teammates so she shouldn't give up. Not just help those in need but those that used to go to the same school as him. Trisha told him to make friends and makes those friendships last forever. Help Yang find her mother and find Ruby, help them stop Salem. It has to be his purpose and he chose to follow them. Whether they accept him or not, it's the path he has taken no going back. How he missed them, his father, his team wish he could see them one last time.
"How long are you planning on moping?"
Eyes widened as the Winchester turned to the source of the voice. He stood shocked gazing at his three teammates. Russell, Dove and Sky Lark. No, this wasn't real he was seeing things. It was all on his head. It's because he misses them so much that his mind will bring their visions to life.
"I'm finally going crazy. Eh, why not?"
"Watching you act like an emo has gotten annoying" said Dove.
"It has gotten old" followed Sky.
"It's not like you Cardin, why are you like this?" followed his partner Russell.
"Do I have to tell you why? Great, listening to me talking to myself. Whatever, you guys are dead because of me. My old man is dead because of me too! So how do you want me to be?"
"It's all in the past, get over yourself already" said Dove.
"You have to move on. We've been watching you for so long and its just painful" followed Sky.
"And aren't you forgetting we chose to fight with you? We wanted to fight that dragon by our choice" said the mohawk teen.
"And because of it you're all dead and I'm almost turned into a vegetable. Neither of you wanted to fight it before I convinced you. This is on me, everything is."
"A lot has passed I see."
Cardin was more shocked than ever at the new voice. Someone appeared next to his teammates. Tears formed watching the image of his father standing with a smile on features.
"These three weren't the only ones watching you all along. I've been watching you far longer than them. I've seen everything, the person you became, your choices, your mistakes I never expected it will end like this."
The Winchester nodded knowing what was coming next. The speech that he was disappointment in him for screwing up so much. More salt to his wounds. This was going to hurt him more than anything.
"It's all right."
His eyes widened gazing at the man who gave a warms mile.
"You've been through a lot it's understandable."
"That's it? That's all you have to say? Not how much of a disappointment I am or how much you must hate-"
"Cardin" Carl got serious silencing him" I will never be disappointed in your or even hate you for the matter. You have made some bad choices just like everyone else, we're not perfect. But now, you're trying to fix them even if it's too late. You want to make something better of yourself and helping that young lady is the first step. More like the third, I saw you fighting at Beacon Trisha taught you well. And helping that blond when she needed someone by her side is an A plus in my book. By the way, she's a looker."
"Oh brother" he rolled his eyes why did he had a feeling he was going to say that.
"You have changed for the better don't look down on yourself. Stop blaming yourself for events from the past. Time to move on and what you can right now."
"What he said" followed Russell.
"I…." the Wichester was still in tears.
"Don't ever forget, I will always be proud of you my son."
His smile made him fall to his knees. Carl was gone along his teammates, he was alone again. A roar caught his attention as a Beringel emerged from the trees. Cardin glared getting up, taking his weapon. Of all times, it has to be now. He used some swift strike before using lighting dust to electrify the gorilla Grimm, finishing it off with increasing his strength on the next attack that killed it. Another one came out making the Winchester to groaned before something landed on it crushing it. It was Yang on her bike as she gave him a silly smile. No need to tell him anything as he got on board and the brawler speed off leaving any Beringels that were still hot on their trail.
"Sorry for taking so long. There were more Beringels than I thought."
"…...….…...…..."
"Hey?" she made a quick turn" you okay?"
"I'm fine, I was…."
"Don't tell you missed me?" she smirked.
"You wished. I was reflecting on the past."
Yang got serious giving a nod. It wasn't her business so she decided to stay silent. From the look on his face it must have been something that really hurt him. Probably worse than when her mother abandoned her.
"Listen" he spoke" I should tell you about it."
"Tell me what, your past? You don't have to. It's too personal I respect your privacy and space."
"You did told me about your mom, telling you will make us even. It's about my father."
The blond brawler stood quiet deciding to decreased the speed of her bike so she can hear him better. If he wanted to tell her then, it will be fine with her.
So the Winchester told her about Carl and how he was betrayed by their neighbor, someone he used to trust a lot. The reason why he ended up disliking faunus in the first place. Yang listen to every single word in complete silence as she stood in deep thought. Guess now she can understand him why he was such a jerk and a bully to Velvet. It surprised her because he was actually going easy on her. He also told her of how he beat those faunus who used to bully him. She had no idea Cardin went through such a horrible experience. This was a good thing for one reason only. Today, she has come to know more about him. And now, she can understand him more. Of course she will not say anything and change the topic completely.
"I think I know where to go. Running from those Beringels helped me."
"That's good. Let me check-"
"I know exactly where I'm going."
"You finally know, for like the tenth time?" he sweat dropped.
"Yep."
"You're not planning on using the map or the compass aren't you?"
"Nope!" she smiled.
"Here we go again" he sighed.
Cardin stood on the Atlesian battle fleet that was still heading to Atlas. Remembering that time in Anima was annoying and funny at the same time. He didn't had to get boring traveling with Yang. Speaking of the blond brawler, she was on the other side reading the book he gave her. The same book that inspired him to be a Huntsman. Next to her stood Blake with her eyes widen opened, mouth wide opened because she was in total shock. Her partner was actually reading a book, it was impossible. She wouldn't believe it if she wasn't seeing it and she was still not believing it. The cat faunus looked at the Winchester giving him an expression that said" what have you done to her?" and he only shrugged his shoulders. Poor Blake didn't know if she will get used of seeing Yang reading a book that isn't one of those silly magazines she used to read.
"I will continue to fight for what I believe" he was gazing through one of the windows thinking about his father and his teammates.
"Watch me."
End
-Wow I actually made Cardin's character short darker than the others. I felt like giving him this kind of background to explain why he ended up hating faunus. Everything he went through was for the sake so he becomes a better character throughout the story. I hope I did a good job.
-Jekyll Cobalt is based on Dr. Jekyll of course a snake faunus fits him well for betraying Cardin's father. Think of him as a second Tyrian when it comes to his sanity. I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of him. As for his VA it should be the same guy that voices Orochimaru from Naruto (forgot his name).
-Replying to reviews:
