After they spent what seems like hours kissing, they finally broke apart long enough to realize that they were both starving. John pulled his shirt back on, Mary had been completely fascinated with his tattoos, outlining them with her fingers gently.
"I got most of them when I was in the marines." he told her when she asked. "When there's bullets flying over your head, a lot of things you cared about before aren't that important."
So he made himself look presentable once more and they went across the street to the diner to get something quick to eat. He had to find out what they were hunting and hurry up to kill it to get back to the boys.
Somewhere in there Mary was fit in, he still wasn't sure where and that was the problem. He couldn't leave her at the motel while he worked, it wasn't fair to her, but at the same time he didn't know what job to give her.
He couldn't take her to talk to anyone that might know something, she wasn't at the stage where she could pretend to be a police officer or federal agent and she couldn't talk to people about what had happened just yet.
The very thought of taking her on the actual hunt made it hard to breathe. She was getting better and she had the instincts of a hunter, Campbell blood will out, but that was completely different than actually being on a hunt with their lives, especially Mary's life, on the line.
But, one thing at a time. Right now he focused on tonight. They were going to get food, they were going to stock up on some things at the market, and then go back to the motel to get ready for tomorrow, that's when they'll get started on the hunt.
They also needed to call the boys and help get rid of the rock inside of him at the thought of leaving the boys behind.
They were in good hands, he knows that Jim will take care of them and if it comes to it, Jim might be a man of the cloth but he was also a hunter and had no problem getting his hands dirty.
But he was still going to feel better once he actually spoke to the boys.
Once they ate they ducked into the gas station market to grab some water and snacks. Grabbing a basket John quickly started to gather a few things for them. Mary drifted into where the chips were, holding two bags as she tried to figure out which one she wanted.
John added a few bottles of water to the basket, stopping in front of a different rack and turning to look at it.
It was the rack with a few different condom boxes. Feeling a deep warmth in his lower stomach he glanced towards Mary who was still invested in her chips, and then back at the condoms.
Before, he had always made sure to have condoms and used them. But that was before Dean had entered his life, followed by Sammy and Mary. After that, his own stuff took a backseat and he hadn't replenished his own stock of contraceptives.
He wasn't sure when it was going to happen, but it was going to happen. A classic case of when not if. And at the very least, he should be prepared for it when it happened.
He took a pack of the condoms and threw them into the basket, pausing to pull the bag of jerky to cover it. Swallowing hard he walked over to her side.
"Still can't decide?" he asked her, hoping that his voice wasn't shaking.
Mary shook her head, holding them up for him to see them clearly. "Which one do you want?"
John glanced over the bags and then took both bags, putting them into the basket. "We'll just get both of them," he said. "So long as they're both eaten."
Mary nodded, coming to his side so that she could press into him. "We will." she said as they went to the counter to quickly pay for everything.
Getting back to the motel they got back onto the bed to get a bit more comfortable. Mary wasted no time to lay almost on top of him, curling up close to him.
He glanced at his watch to see the time, nodding. "Time to call the kids." he said, reaching over to the nightstand to grab the phone, dragging it over to them. Mary moved with him so they could sit up together and dial.
"Father Murphy."
"Hey Jim, it's John and Mary." John said, reaching out to wrap his arm around Mary's shoulders, pulling her in close. "How are the boys?"
"They're fine, they just ate and are helping me with the dishes." Jim told him. There was a rustle of cloth and static before Dean's voice came through the phone.
"Daddy?"
"Hey buddy," John said, feeling himself relax. "How are you two?"
"We're good, Mr. Jim is telling us about the bible and creation." Dean said excitedly. "He says that Sammy's powers are a gift from God."
Jim was a good man but he was an Catholic and John had been raised a Baptist. While he hadn't even so much as prayed in the recent few years, there were some things that you couldn't shake from your childhood.
He also had a rough relationship with the so called god so he took that with a small grain of salt.
"They're a gift from somewhere." he agreed. "What else did you boys do today?"
"Not much else, but tomorrow we wanna go to the woods." he continued. "Mr. Jim said that we can so long as we don't stray off the path."
"Yes, just be careful, alright?" he asked, waiting for Dean to confirm. "Is Sammy here too?"
"Yeah, course." Dean said. Dimly they could hear Sammy almost whisper a, "Hi," to them. "What about mama?"
"She's here too." John said, passing the phone to her to say hello to the boys. They spoke for a few moments before she handed it back to John.
"Boys, please put Jim back onto the phone." he asked. "I love you both."
"We love you too daddy. And momma too." Dean said as he handed the phone over to Jim.
"Jim, stop trying to proselytize my boys please." John instructed, hearing Jim laugh.
"I'm just giving them a different point of view." Jim told him. "They asked, they were reading the bible and had questions."
"Answer their questions, don't bring too much religion into it." John said, remembering his own Sunday school teachings. "They don't need that."
"I'll try my best." Jim humored him. "And I have some news about the hunt you're on. I had someone call me about it and I looked into it while you were driving."
"Alright, tell me what you know." John said.
"It's a couple of vampires, not an entire coven but enough that you should keep your guard up."
