Author's Note:
Here it is the next chapter and one I have been looking very forward to. It will mostly be an Ash chapter and also a Dragonair chapter. It's the start of what I'm classing as the Blackthorn arc. The date this is being updated on, 06/03/2020, is the two year anniversary of starting Johto. In the last year, I've wrote thirty-five chapters and the word count of: 394,990. Compared to last year, I've wrote one more chapter which I wasn't expecting to and a good few thousand more words. Based on the progress over the last few years, I hope to finish Johto by year three but as always I can't promise anything since we don't know what's going to happen. Either way, the series is still going strong and I look forward to a lot of arc close to appearing. Not much else to say, but don't forget to vote in the poll as it will change when we get to chapter seventy-one and with that, let's begin...
Chapter 69: Fangs for Everything
Ash took a deep breath of fresh mountain air. It was still early morning, around ten, the bright sun was shining down on them. Walking across a grassy meadow with a crystal blue stream running beside them. It wasn't particularly hot, but it wasn't cold. It was nice, the kind of place one might go to for a spring picnic or barbecue or something.
He couldn't help but lightly chuckle to himself, if he was to think of a word to describe this place, it would be Serene. Funny how his girlfriend is the perfect way to describe a peaceful, beautiful location. Of course, he has been less affectionate since the lake but any time he's tried, its felt wrong. Like him being happy is disrespecting Gyarados and the friendship they shared. Although he can reason it with himself, it's also very difficult to put into words and he'd hate to upset Serena by trying and saying the wrong thing.
It's been a few days since they had that encounter with Drake and Leaf. It's been pretty quiet since then. Wake up, travel, lunch, travel, train, dinner then sleep. Pretty basic without much of anything happening. Sure, they saw a couple wild Pokémon but nothing special. Some flying types overhead, Ratatta scurrying across the ground and probably some bugs hiding within the trees but to be completely honest, Ash couldn't care less about them right now.
"So Brock, Blackthorn is only two days away from here?" he heard Serena ask.
"Right Serena," Brock replied, "it could be done in one day if we hurry but even at two, that will leave you two days to prepare before the contest."
His friends were currently ahead of him, not by much but still ahead. Normally he would be leading the charge, especially when so close to one of his gym battles but not today. Of course, he is still upset over the lake, but he's also been preoccupied for planning his gym team. If what Drake said is true, he'll need six Pokémon to take down a dragon type specialist whose been asked to be an elite four member. Not an easy task.
He still has both Aerodactyl and Dragonair on hand at the minute and they are the most obvious choices being his strongest members and Dragonair also having a type advantage, even if also susceptible to dragon types. Pikachu is also an obvious choice since he is always on hand but that's only half the team. Does he go with some younger Pokémon who have a type advantage like Togetic and Lapras. Venusaur mentioned wanting a gym battle and while not perfect against dragon types, could use his damage over time to ware one two down. Or does he go the power route with options like Snorlax and Alakazam.
Then there's the possibility of attacking a dragon types other element, it's likely that she'll have a Dragonite or some other flying type so should he bring Pidgeot to out manuvers it in an aerial battle? Should he bring someone like Blastoise for a power battle in the water. Sure, he has the possibility of six options but that still leaves massive gaps in his team and what if he gets together a team of six only for it to be a one on one or three on three-
"Hey what's that!" Misty's voice called out.
The outburst drew Ash out of his thoughts, and he looked ahead. He saw the water type specialist and she was pointing further down the lake. Following her direction, his eyes looked further down only to see a small blue serpent-like Pokémon curled up by the river. It held a great resemblance to Ash's Dragonair but much smaller in size.
"It's a Dratini," Serena replied, as she pulled out her Pokedex. Being close enough, Ash could listen to hers without needing to get his own out. Despite having its evolve form in a Pokeball on his belt, this could possibly be the first time seeing a Dratini this close since he caught his as a Dragonair:
Dratini, The Dragon Pokémon. Dratini continually moults and sloughs off its old skin. It does so because the life energy within its body steadily builds to reach uncontrollable levels. They are known to avoid humans except for those they deem safe to be around.
"I wonder what one's doing here," Brock mused, scratching his chin, "I mean, I heard Blackthorn was home to many different dragon type species but to see a Dratini just lying about on the path."
As his friends resumed their trek down the path, moving much slower as to not disturb the sleeping dragon, it was probably they just remained quiet and moved on. Wouldn't want to disturb or scare the small dragon after all.
"I know what you mean, it seems weird that such a weird Pokémon would be out here sleeping like that," Misty added.
A blast of water erupted from behind the Dratini as it appeared to wake up. Unable to make out anything from the water jet other than a couple different shades of blue, a blast of water shot out and landing in front of them. Cutting through the grass, leaving a distinct line as they all came to an abrupt stop.
When the water fade, it revealed a large Kingdra in the lake, eyes narrowed in their direction. It was clearly much bigger than Serena's Kingdra back at Professor Oak's lab and was unflinching, as if daring them to take another step. While the Dratini was now wide awake and curled up closer to the larger dragon but watching them with wide eyes, as if curious about their arrival rather than the hostility on its guard.
Ash found himself with one of his hands gripping a Pokeball. He didn't even need to look to see it was his Aerodactyl's. It seems like he has a sort of impulse to go for his strongest member on hand now whenever threatened, ever since the lake.
"Kingdra, on guard," a female voice boomed, looking towards the source they found a women approaching. She had long blue hair, but it was held up in a pony-tail, whilst dressed in traditional hikers gear. She stood tall, like some sort of soldier and appeared to mid-to-late twenties, "what is it that you want with that Dratini?"
"We don't want anything with it," Serena called out, holding her hands up, "my friends and I were just passing through on our way to Blackthorn City. I plan on competing in the contest in a few days and my boyfriend Ash, plans on challenging the gym."
The women stared them down, her eyes flickering across each of them as if looking for some reason to attack. Without a word, she walked past them and over to the two dragon types by the water. She kneeled down and rubbed Dratini on the head, having it cooed under her touch. She slowly picked it up before placing it in the water for a swim as her Kingdra appeared to finally relax its expression.
"I'm very sorry," she turned to face them, he eyes relaxed with a hint of a smile on her lips, "you see, my Kingdra was on guard to protect Dratini. We're on a special assignment at the minute and I was giving my other Pokémon a little exercise. We didn't mean you or any other passersby any harm."
"That's alright," Misty replied, "I know if I had a rare Pokémon like Dratini, I'd want Kingdra to be its guard as well."
"It's nice to meet you, my names Clair," she introduced herself.
"Hi Clair," Serena replied, "I'm Serena. With me are Misty and Brock, and my boyfriend Ash."
"Ash?" she repeated, "Ash Ketchum?"
"Y-yeah," Ash replied, thrown off by her knowing of him, "how did you know?"
"Because I'm the Blackthorn city gym leader and I've been looking forward to your challenge. Orange league winner."
Taking a deep breath, Ash relaxed. Drake said that she mistook him for Ash, and they haven't exactly been close which would explain why didn't notice him straight away but at least he doesn't have a stalker.
"Dratini!" she called out, turning back away from the group. Looking towards the river, they saw the small blue dragon swimming upstream and away from them, "Kingdra, it's on the move again. Follow Dratini but don't interrupt it."
"Huh?" Misty responded, "what's going on?"
"I don't have time to stay and chat but if you'd like, you can follow us and find out," Clair offered, as she took off down the river side behind the two water-bound Pokémon.
All four members of the group looked at each other before nodding in agreement and taking off after her. It was pretty easy to follow since they are bound to stick to the water but that didn't mean Clair, or the Pokémon were slow by any means. They were already a fair distance away as the group ran to catch up.
Ash reached up and put his hand on his hat to stop it blowing off. Running through the grassy meadow, a clear landscape, the kind of place you dream off when wanting peace of mind. It was magical, for lack of a better word.
Looking ahead, he saw Clair had stopped just a little further upstream. Slowing down to a stop just behind her, he put his hands on his knees expecting to have to regain his breath but that wasn't the case. He was barely over panting. It's been a while since he last did any sort of exercise, normally he would work out alongside his Pokémon whilst they were training but ever since he lost Gyarados, he hasn't been feeling it during their training sessions.
"Nothing like a morning jog," Clair stretched, "sorry about that. You see, Dratini here is meant to become a starter for a young boy from Blackthorn. So we are on a pre-journey mission to see if its ready to partner with a trainer."
"What sort of mission?" Misty asked.
"Somewhere in this location, we have a hidden Dragon Fang. It's an artefact relating to the first settlers in Blackthorn and their dragon-partner," Clair explained, "now to ensure the starters we give out are prepared, we have them find it out."
"That's quite some history," Brock noted.
"Come on out, Dragonair!" Clair tossed a Pokeball up into the air. In a flash of light, a blue serpent dragon, much longer than Ash's with some sort of stone broach appeared with an elegant cry, "meet my starter, Dragonair. She still holds the record for the timing of finding the artefacts."
"She's beautiful," Serena gasped.
Ash had to admit it to be true. The large serpent was much larger than Ash's ever was, it was almost disheartening. Clair must've had hers for at least a decade and it still hasn't evolved. He imagined winning a league with a big mighty dragon but that might be further off than expected. The large dragon blinked as she watched over the group before moving her head closer to Ash. He wasn't scared but he did consider it a little weird.
"Ash, I know you had a Dragonair back in the Orange League," Clair spoke up, "it's not on your person right now, is it?"
"Yeah," Ash replied, "I brought her over to get ready because I wanted to use her in the gym battle."
"Smart boy, I like someone who plans ahead. But you'll need so much more than that for what I have planned for our battle," Clair smirked, "it's not every day that I get to battle an Orange league winner. But let's not focus on that for now, do you mind if I see your Dragonair?"
"Of course," Ash replied, pulling his Ultra Ball of his belt.
Holding the device out, it burst open and the princess appeared in a flash of red light. She stood tall; her tail curled up to create the base as she stared at the other Dragonair. Despite being a great deal smaller than this other Dragonair, her face was unflinching or anything other than a cold stare as she watched. Some might think they were squaring up for a battle, but Ash knew his dragon well enough, she doesn't start fights... she only ends them.
Clair stepped between them, neither dragon lowering their stance. She raised a hand up to her Dragonair, who lowered down before slivering back. It was amazing to see how a simple action communicated so much. Turning to Ash's dragon, she gave a small smile, reaching her hand out to stroke the princess' cheek.
"She is beautiful," Clair praised. A glance to the side, despite her stance unchanging, Ash could see a new wave of pride wash over his serpent. His Dragonair never lacked self-confidence but even for her it must be nice to receive compliments like that, "she'll make a fine Dragonite, when the time comes. Can't be long now."
"I'm not so sure," Ash muttered to himself.
It's not that he wants to force her to evolve or anything of the sort, it just stung to hear Clair say that when his Dragonair isn't nearly as big or as old as her own, who hasn't evolved yet. Of course, every Pokémon is different but still. Pseudo-legendary Pokémon take longer but will he have to wait decades?
"What do you mean by that?" Dragonair asked, her harsh glaze turning on him. She has never disobeyed him or anything of the sort, but she is a very opinionated Pokémon and likely took offense at his mutter. A nervous chuckle escaped Ash's lips as he shrunk under the gaze.
"Is there some sort of problem?" Clair asked, her eyebrow raising in a questioning manner.
Ash shook his head as he tried to refocus on the situation he was in. Locking eyes with the gym leader, he really tried not to focus on his Dragonair's judging gaze as he went to answer. Realising he could probably answer both of their questions in one go.
"It's just," he paused, trying to think of the right way to phrase it, "your Dragonair, Clair. She is much larger and older than mine. I never knew mine as a Dratini, but you've had her since you started as a trainer and now you're a gym leader and in running for an elite four position but yours still hasn't evolved."
"First of, I'm not in running for any position," Clair replied, "it's true the champion has made it clear on more than one occasion that he wants me in his elite four. Ever since he took his position but I'm not going to take it. I'm quite content in my current role."
"Why is that?" Misty asked, "I mean, I'm a gym leader in training and due to take over the Cerulean gym when I'm sixteen. But I could never imagine passing up the opportunity to become part of the elite four."
"You see, Misty, its more complicated than that. I see my role as gym leader not just a job but as a duty. A duty to prepare Blackthorn's next generation of dragon trainers and keep the traditions alive," Clair explained, "not to mention, I wouldn't to be seen as trying to match my cousin."
"Cousin?" Serena asked.
"Lance, of Kanto's elite four," Clair smiled, "I believe you met him."
Ash closed his eyes at the mention of the name. He doesn't blame Lance, far from it, it's just he is a painful reminder of what happened. It's almost funny, for the longest time, Lance was his icon and hero and he dreamed of meeting him. It's like the old saying goes, don't meet your hero's.
"I'm sorry, he told me what happened," Clair apologised.
Peeking out of one of his eyes, Ash saw the gym leader had her head lowered and was turned away. He quickly shut it tight, not wanting to risk making eye contact at this moment. He felt a soft delicate hand land on his back which he guessed belonged to Serena.
"If it's any consolation, he was devastated over what happened," Clair continued, "he paid us a visit to let Gyarados get to know him. Even if not a dragon, it's a peaceful enough for any Pokémon. He spoke volumes of you as a trainer, how he suspects he'll get to have good battle against you sooner or later."
Ash's hands ran through is messy black hair, knocking his hat off in the process. He clenched his fingers through his locks. He pulled tight, his head looking downward as he tried to rip the hair out. Even if he wanted to, he could produce tears. It's like he's ran dry of tears after how many were shed since the lake.
Despite wanting to feel angry at the memories being brought up again, a small Butterfree started poking around his stomach at hearing what Lance had to say about him as a trainer. He never considered himself on the level of elite four members but to hear he could be battling one soon was comforting. Almost like what happened at the lake wasn't his fault and he isn't the sort of horrible trainer that has their Pokémon taken off them.
"Maybe its best if we switch topics," Brock spoke up, "it sounded like you had more to say to the original question. About Dragonair and her evolution."
"Right," Clair replied, "and as I was saying, my Dragonair isn't one who you should base yours off. She decided, shortly after her first evolution that she didn't wish to evolve again so we found her an Ever stone. That's the broach she has, it helps her supress the evolution. She would've evolved years ago if not for it."
Ash's eyes blinked open as he glanced to the side to look at Clair. She made brief eye contact, but he quickly moved his gaze over to the larger Dragonair. Come to think of it, she is the largest Dragonair he has ever since. He can remember seeing one of Lance's Dragonair's in battle and even his wasn't that large.
"I've seen many Dratini's raised through to Dragonite's through my years and I can honestly say, I'm surprised yours hasn't evolved by now," Clair continued, "In fact, why don't we have a battle right here and now. Our two Dragonair's against each other."
"Why?" Ash asked, looking back at the Blackthorn gym leader.
"You are Ash Ketchum, right?" Misty asked.
"Why not?" Clair asked, "it won't have a stance on your gym battle or anything. I don't have the team I've prepared for you right now and I also don't have any badges on hand to give you. But it will be fun, like a pre-gym challenge."
"Well, I guess," Ash replied, turning towards his own dragon type, "what do you say, Dragonair?"
"As if you need to ask," she replied, her tail uncurling from under her. Ash smiled before he felt a sharp slap on the back of his head, "now get your mind in focus, we have a challenge fit for royalty. I need you on top form."
"Ow!" Ash cried out, putting a hand up to where he was hit.
"Humans, you're so fragile," Dragonair shook her head, "now. I believe we have a battle to conduct."
Ash nodded in understanding as he turned so he was horizontal with the river, his blue dragon-serpent slivering in front of him. His friends walked to the far side, giving them plenty of room as Clair walked to the opposing side, her own Dragonair squaring up to his. A quick glance to the side showed Brock stepping forward before holding his arms up, as if the referee in an official match.
"This is a one on one battle between-" Brock announced, but was cut off.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, we don't need a ref. This isn't anything official and we both should know when either side has had enough," Clair waved her hand, before turning back to face Ash with a fierce expression covering her face, a small smirk twitching on her lips, "so let's get started."
Clair verses Ash:
Ash watched his opponents carefully but neither Clair nor her Dragonair made a move. This was a little off putting since a lot of Pokémon who are speedy and powerful tend to try and make the first move. Seeing as his own Dragonair hadn't moved yet either, he made his call.
"Alright Dragon, let's set the field!" he called out.
His own blue serpent let out an echo-y cry as a dark rain cloud formed overhead.
She shot forward as a dark blue flame surrounded her.
Clair's Dragonair slide to the side, raising her tail up before slamming it down on his, knocking her to the ground.
"It was risky for you to try Rain Dance when my Dragonair could just as easily fight in that style," Clair smiled, "but you got lucky. Dragonair's are very versatile battlers and my works better with fire moves so you should use that to your advantage.
A large bolt of lightning struck down on the two dragons.
His Dragonair shot up before wrapping her body around her opponents.
Clair's raised her tail and whacked his on the back of the head.
It was difficult to make up what was happening in that mess, but it soon became clear that Clair's had his trapped in a wrap.
"Come on, you two can break out," Clair called out.
His serpent began struggling against her larger counterpart but to no success. Ash could feel his heart beating against his chest as he realised that both Clair and her Dragonair was waiting for them to make a move, not actually using their full potential.
His Dragonair must've also realised this as she began to thrash around even harder.
"Hold on, Dragonair!" he called out, as something sparked in his head, "you just need to chill!"
She must've realised what he meant as she launched a close ranged Ice Beam.
It struck Clair's dragon in the face and blasted her back, allowing his to sliver out.
"Dearie me, Ash, I don't appreciate our battle tactics in the form of puns," Dragonair hissed as she slivered towards him.
Clair's Dragon seemed quick to recover and Ash saw an orange ball forming in her mouth.
"Look out!" he cried but it was too late.
A powerful beam struck Dragonair in the back, Ash had to duck to avoid being hit by her. Wiping his forehead as a shadow passed over him, he looked back to see his blue serpent laying on the grass next to the river. She was covered in scratch marks and bruises, eyes barely open.
"Come on Dragonair!" he called out, "can you get up?!"
His Dragon weakly lifted her head before her eyes narrowed.
She slide into the lake, disappearing from sight.
Ash took a moment to stand back up.
A second later, she burst out of the river, covered by water as she moved with great speed.
Looking back towards his opponents, he was barely able to see Clair's Dragonair open her mouth before a powerful Flamethrower shot out.
His Dragonair shot straight through the flames as a white steam covered them both. Moments later, both Dragonair's were rolling on the ground as the steam disappeared within the rain. Looking closely, he gasped as he saw burn marks over his Dragonair.
"But-" Ash put a hand over his mouth.
"You thought the water from the Aqua Jet would protect her?" Clair asked, "you really shouldn't underestimate my Dragonair like that."
Clair's Dragonair was the first to move, looming over his.
Ash couldn't really make it out, but he heard Clair's Pokémon making some suggestive comments to his Dragonair. It was as if she was trying to anger his princess.
His Dragonair slowly pushed herself up, growling in anger. A red outline surrounded her body. Ash didn't even need to think to realise what move she was about to use; it was a fairly powerful one but one she claimed not to be a fan off due to its side effects.
She shot forward and knocked Clair's Dragonair down.
On top of her, Ash's Dragonair began attacking by either whacking her opponent with her tail or trying to bite.
As he watched his dragon let loose on Clair's starter, something seemed off.
"So she does have an inner fire, I was beginning to doubt," Clair uttered, "well Dragonair, I think it's almost time. Restrain her."
As quick as a flash, her Dragonair wrapped around his. Despite the outrage still being active, his dragon could barely move.
It was unusual to see her so worked up, the angry growls through baring teeth and narrowed eyes showed her being serious. Even though she lost against both her last two proper battles, Drake's Starmie and Silver's Gengar, she was taken down too quickly to actually get worked up. Not to mention, Clair's Dragonair has been actively antagonising her, as if to provoke this rage. What are they even doing?
"Listen Dragonair, use it!" Clair called out, "that inner fire, the anger, use it! Embrace it! You are strong enough to break out! Do it!"
Ash gasped, as Clair's words echoed in his mind. He should be the one to encourage Dragonair! He opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out, instead his jaw just dropped as his eyes widened at the sight in front of him.
His Dragonair glew white, Clair's quickly releasing her grip before slivering back towards Clair's side. Refocusing on his Pokémon, she grew wider as a pair of wings grew from her back. Her head also increasing in size. When the glowing stopped, her new orange scales were revealed. She had evolved!
She was breathing heavily, stood in place. Ash pulled out his Pokedex to scan his newly evolved Pokémon:
Dragonite, The Dragon Pokémon. The final evolved form of Dratini. Dragonite is capable of circling the globe in just 16 hours. It is a kind-hearted Pokémon that leads lost and foundering ships in a storm to the safety of land. Despite being very powerful, it is often seen protecting those who can't defend themselves.
Type: Dragon / Flying
Ability: Inner Focus
Hidden Ability: Multiscale (Note: the hidden ability is unlocked)
Gender: Female
Nature: Modest (Note: this nature is unlikely to change due to this Pokémon being fully evolved)
Move(s): Wing Attack, Hurricane, Thunder Punch, Roost, Wrap, Leer, Thunder Wave, Twister, Dragon Rage, Slam, Agility, Dragon Tail, Aqua Tail, Dragon Rush, Safeguard, Dragon Dance, Hyper Beam, Dragon Claw, Rain Dance, Thunder, Aerial Ace, Fly, Dragon Breath, Dragon Pulse, Extreme Speed, Iron Tail, Shock Wave
"B-but if she already had the potential, why didn't she evolve in our battle a couple days ago?" Ash asked, putting his Pokedex away.
"I think I can answer that," Brock approached, "I don't think Clair was battling, not in the traditional sense. She was specifically trying to challenge Dragonair to push her, as a way to force the evolution out."
"Correct," Clair added, "I knew your Dragonair was strong, but she hadn't truly been challenged. She was in an awkward position where an opponent was either easy enough that it wouldn't truly get her adrenaline pumping or she was so out matched that she was taken down before her evolution could take hold."
"My gratitude," Dragonite bowed.
As Ash looked at his fully evolved dragon with pride although his eyebrow quickly lowered in confusion, he scurried to pull his Pokedex out of his pocket. He quickly looked back at his screen which displayed his Dragonite's information. Her nature was now showing ad Modest and not Adamant... just how much did she change?
Ash watched his Dragonite flying through the air, her new shiny orange scales shimmering under the suns gaze. Her speed matched that of Pidgeot, but he could tell just by watching her that she could've pushed harder. Although she did appear to be having issues with turning in the air. Not that its really surprising, after all she could properly fly before and so learning how to might not be as simple as one might expect.
After all, his Pidgeot was taught from when she was a Pidgey how to fly and Aerodactyl was likely the same, being taught from birth. Charizard, as far as he could remember, didn't have nearly as much issues with it but he isn't as skilful as Pidgeot or really have the potential that Dragonite has so it wouldn't be as difficult.
"Alright Ash, it appears she has dodging down," Clair informed, "why don't you call her down and we can discuss the next part."
He nodded in understanding before putting his fingers into his mouth. Blowing hard, a high pitched whistle echoed through the air. His Dragonite looked down at him and watched him before nodding carefully. She shot down before a powerful blast of air pushed him down. He landed on his behind before looking up to see both his newly evolved dragon type and the dragon type specialist looming over him.
"You did great work at dodging Kingdra," Ash praised, accepting a hand from his Dragon Pokémon who pulled him back up.
"It was very good, especially considering you only recently evolved," Clair added, "now onto your next stage, awareness of your surroundings. Dragons are said to have a sixth sense of what's around them but for the most part I've only seen it in fully evolved Pokémon."
"Any reason that's next?" Ash asked.
"Well we only really have today and once the sense is understood it quickly becomes second nature," Clair explained, "besides, I believe your friend Misty wants the chance to train with my Kingdra."
Ash looked in the direction that she gestured towards to see Misty approaching the lake with a Pokeball in hand. It was nice to see her taking her training a lot more seriously, but really she has been doing that since they both competed in the Whirl cup.
"So what's this sixth sense-" Ash was cut off.
Clair's starter shot out of the grass and wrapped around his Dragonite. At first her Dragonair's tail wrapped around one of Dragonite's claws before stretching it around her body before her whole body wrapped around Dragonite's like in a sort of straight-jacket. As Clair's Dragonair restrained his own Dragon, he noticed her purposely wrapping around Dragonite's wings. Finally, Clair's pure dragon-type bite down on his Dragonite's shoulder.
"The sixth sense would've allowed her to see that move before ," Clair explained.
She looked down at Ash and her smile fell as her eyes lowered. She place a hand on his shoulder and began to walk away from the fighting dragons. They only got a couple steps away before she turned Ash, so they were face to face. He really wasn't sure what, if anything, he should say.
"Ash, the old tales from Blackthorn's dragon den has one overarching thing theme I think you should know," Clair replied, "I know your hurting from your loss of Gyarados, but I think it will help you. I know it's helped me in the past.
"And what's that?" he asked.
"Everything ends, and it's always sad," Clair explained, "but everything begins again too, and that's always happy. Don't spend your time sad over those times which end, your Gyarados would never want it. Be happy."
Ash closed his eyes as he looked down at the grass. He quickly used his sleeve to dry his eyes as he felt a new wave of tears forming in them but unlike almost every day since the lake incident, these weren't sad tears. Shaking his head, he looked back up to the sky, the scales as blue as the ones that once covered Gyarados' body.
Memories of Gyarados flooded back into his mind, not the lake but the good ones, the happy ones. Like the first time they met, or when he evolved to save him from a group of Tentacruel, or any number of the battles they partook in during Kanto. Then came the letter which offered him the chance to compete in the Orange league, a whole competition based around friendship between Pokémon and trainer and he got to compete because of Gyarados. Not only that but he became known as one of the only openly affectionate Gyarados, possibly the only one. There was also the time they met Lapras, he even became a sort of father figure for her.
"Thank you, Clair," he whispered.
Brock smiled down at his little rock type. A small rag was in his hand before he shoved it into his pocket. He just finished giving his Bonsly a little wipe down, since they are spending the day in this meadow with Clair, he decided to get a head start on giving his Pokémon their weekly grooming and check over.
"There," he smiled, picking his pure rock type up so they were eye level. He had wide eyes and a bright smile on his face. He was happy with how he has grown over the months since they met. He is in as good health as if he stayed with Sudowoodo. Pushing that thought out of his head, he examined him closely. Part of him always thought that he could convince Paul to let his Sudowoodo go so they can reunite but that dream is becoming just that, a dream. Sooner or later he'll need to get him training so he can properly mature and evolve. At which point, he would've left him mum in the wild anyway.
"Bon?" he asked, turning his head to the side while raising an eyebrow in a questioning manner.
"Sorry buddy, just thinking," Brock replied, his smile fading away like a ghost. He put the little rock type down on his knee, looking around he tried to think of something to change the subject. He looked over to his group of other Pokémon. He had his full Johto team right now, even though Magcargo swapped Bonsly, he made the exchange at the last Pokémon centre. If felt nice having the full team from this region, like its complete, "why don't you go tell Shuckle to come over. I think Stantler and Delibird are gonna play a game soon if your quick enough."
"Bon Bonsly!" he cried, hopping down onto the grass.
He ran across the grass meadow towards the rest of his team. He is still a little cautious when they meet strangers, but he has opened up a lot. When he first met him, he knew that he couldn't replace his mother and he hasn't tried. If anything, he liked to think of himself as an older brother, looking out for his little bro. Just like when he was stuck at Pewter with his actual siblings.
Bonsly quickly reached his fellow teammates and made some speech while jumping up and down. It was nice to see that Bonsly hasn't let his situation define him, but it won't be easy, helping him train so he can evolve. Of course, his father and Forest do most of the training for his team and they get most battles at the gym, but they are sure not to train anyone who doesn't want to. Shuckle being the perfect example.
His rock bug type was slowly shuffling across the grass as behind Delibird, Stantler and Bonsly began knocking a ball to each other. Shuckle is his oldest Pokémon in terms of age and he isn't exactly one to rush. He appears to be the one getting on best with Magcargo, but he has made it clear he just wants to see the world and smell the roses.
"Hey there buddy," Brock smiled, standing up to meet his shiny Pokémon, "you ready for the shell-scrub?"
The Mold Pokémon closed his eyes before nodding his head. Brock smiled before leaning down and picking up the elderly Pokémon. Making his way back into his seat, he pulled out a clean rag before wiping down Shuckle's shell. Of course, they have to clean the inside but that is done through putting the water and cleaning supplies into the shell, plugging them up. Similar to how the old man made his medicine with other Shuckle's.
His bag shook, it was slumped to the side of his chair.
"Sorry about that buddy," Brock apologised to his rock bug Pokémon, "I'll get it when we're done."
Shuckle shook his thin yellow head, eyes closed, before gesturing to his bag. He never has been much of a talker, but he has been one of the easiest Pokémon to understand, maybe it comes from his old age. The corner of Brock's mouth flicked upwards in a smile at the elderly Mold Pokémon.
"Thank you," he whispered.
Brock reached down to the side and fished through his bag before coming to the source, a black cased Pokegear. His family brought it him for his last birthday. He doesn't use it much; sure it's got a map function, but he prefers to use the old fashioned paper map. It's not lead him wrong yet. Turning the device on, he noticed it had one new message on the home screen and it was from Suzy.
His heart beating harder as he swiped it to load up the full message. He has been in contact with her on and off since they met up in Goldenrod. Of course, most of the conversations revolved around Ninetales or the new breeding techniques but after how much they have been through, they are a couple without the title.
'Hey Brock, how are you doing? And Ninetales of course. And all the others. It's great to hear you caught a Magcargo, they can be difficult to look after with their high body temperature and everything. But I know you'll do great with him. Oh, before I forget, I heard you was coming to Blackthorn soon. Well after the contest taking place there, they are hosting a Pokémon beauty competition and I've been asked to be one of the judges. Hope you can make it; it'll be great to see you all again. Suzy.'
A stupid wide smile grew on Brock's face with every word he read.
He would get to see Suzy again! Of course, he might end up competing but if he did he couldn't really use Ninetales, could he? After all, wouldn't Suzy be seen as biased towards the two of them. Not that it matters, after all, he gets to see Suzy again! Blackthorn will be the best time he's had since Goldenrod... and when it's all over with this competition, maybe he could make them official - like official, official and not just the will they won't they thing that's happening right now despite definitely a will they.
"Well someone seems happy," a female voice spoke up.
"Huh?" he questioned.
Looking around, he saw Misty approaching and it was evident that her voice was the one who made that statement. She had a half smile with halve closed eyes. It looked as if she had something eating away at her but not wanting to say. Not surprising since she likes to be the toughest and keeps herself to herself.
"What's the matter, Mist?" he asked.
"With me?" she asked, forcing her lips up into a large smile, "nothing. I'm fine," she sighed, "just fine."
"Now you can't trick old Brocko with that tough girl act," he replied, a small chuckle accompanying his tone.
"Whose acting?" she asked, cracking a knuckle in her open palm.
Her smile morphing more into a smirk as her eyes narrowed. Brock shook his head as he laughed playfully with her. He will miss Misty when she leaves at the end of Johto, she is like his little sister, but he couldn't help his growing pride in her. She'll be one of the youngest gym leaders in Kanto's history. Not many gym leaders start at the youngest possible age of sixteen after all. It's been nice to see her grow as a person and a gym leader.
The two trainers burst out laughing.
"So I'll ask again," Misty replied, "what's got you so happy?"
"Just a message from Suzy," Brock replied, "she said she's hosting a breeding competition in Blackthorn, and its after Serena's contest so right when we are visiting."
"I'm guessing you'd like to visit?" Misty asked, with a knowing smile.
"Well of course, why wouldn't I?" Brock asked, "but now that I've answered your question. Won't you answer mine?"
He watched carefully as his female friend watched her turn to the side, her face lowered as her smile followed it. She wrapped her arms around herself, rubbing her arms in a way to get warmth. It was rare but for a moment she looked vulnerable.
"It's just," she replied, flipping her head back and looking at the sky. Brock followed her gaze and he saw Ash's newly evolved Dragonite in some form of aerial manuvers as blasts of water shot past her. A quick glance across the ground showed it was Clair's Kingdra who was trying to shoot her down, "you remember what happened at the Whirl cup. With the battle with Ash?"
"Of course," Brock replied.
"Well I learnt that I lost to him because of my lack of battle experience in comparison," Misty explained, "but since then, I've been trying to get better, more training more experience. Yet, here we are, a chance to train with a gym leader and they choose Ash and help him evolve one of his Pokémon. While I'm just... stuck, in the same place."
Brock nodded in understanding, he stood up, placing Shuckle down on the floor. Walking over to his friend, he placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. With how they pick their next destination for either a gym or contest, it can be easy to forget that Misty and even himself have goals and dreams with their travels focusing around their companions. Its no-ones fault really, just the way that it seems to fall while on the road.
"Don't worry Mist, she may be focusing on Ash and Dragonite but that's because of her speciality," Brock replied, "and if you really want to learn, then why not just watch and take it on board as well?"
"Ya know what, Brock?" Misty asked, "that's not such a bad idea."
Brock could only smile as he watched the orange haired friend walk towards the lake, unclipping one of the Pokeballs into her hand. She really is going to make a fine young gym leader when it comes to that point in her career. She'll also do great in whatever role she decides to go for in the future.
Looking back down, he picked Shuckle back up before taking his seat once more.
Ash clenched his fist as he watched his Dragonite in the middle of the grassy meadow. His knuckles turning white as his breath was stuck in his throat. His eyes low as they darted around, desperation filling his every fibre. Unable to take it any longer, he took a deep breath.
"No, not yet," Clair's voice echoed in his ear.
He bite down on his lower lip, feeling his arms shake in response. Dragonite was currently tied up by Clair's Dragonair and was trying to break free. She has been for many minutes, but she just couldn't break free. She had tried just physical force, using her element moves and just plain old phrasing about but all its done so far is tire her out and make her even angrier. It was almost funny how similar she is to Sandslash, main difference being Sandslash is completely open about his while she tends to try and hide it to keep up her appearance as something from royalty.
As she spun around on the spot, the flowers crushed under her clawed orange foot being revealed. Dragonite began trying to bite at Dragonair's head as the pure dragon type kept herself just barely avoiding them. In one swift action, Clair's starter wrapped part of her around Dragonite's head, forcing her mouth shut. Ash could only turn away as he wanted to free his friend but was under strict instructions not to. Every attempt he tried to give Dragonite an instruction, Clair stopped him.
"Why are you doing this?" Ash asked, "why are you making me watch this?"
"Two reasons," he heard Clair reply, "firstly, when Dragonite's evolve they get huge power boost. This is letting yours burn it out in a less destructive way than most others do due to them evolving in combat usually."
"And the second?" Ash asked.
He looked up with his eyes open, probably glistening as he felt the urge to cry. Seeing his friend in a difficult situation, filled with anger was eerily similar to what happened at the lake. It was almost like a flashback to when Gyarados first turned was playing over in his mind.
"To teach you a lesson, you've felt powerless after the lake after all," Clair replied.
"Just like Dragonite is now?" Ash finished, "but what exactly are you trying to tell me?"
"Tell you what, you try to work it out and I'll tell you at the end," she smiled, "provided you haven't figured it out already."
Ash couldn't help but smile as his mind began circling through all the possible lessons that Clair might be trying to teach him. Maybe something about Dragonite proving to be just as powerless as he was at the lake or - oh, whatever. She already gave him one lesson about moving on and came out and said it, so why not say this one?
A large gruff came from behind him, he turned around to see Clair's Kingdra staring right at him... or rather Clair, who was stood next to him. Looking in the direction of the gesture, Ash saw the small Dratini from before swimming away down the stream.
"Understood, follow him and I'll be, behind shortly," Clair replied before turning to the side, "sorry about this but Dragonite should be fine as she got rid of most of her pumped up energy after evolving. A nice rest in the Pokeball should do her fine now."
She walked forward towards the two dragons pulling out a Pokeball. She quickly recalled Dragonair who disappeared in a beam of red light. Dragonite stumbled around after becoming free from the restrain but she didn't fall over. Clair turned on her heel before running down the riverside.
Seeing as his friends were already busy with their own thing, Ash decided not to pull them away and instead walked up to his Dragonite. She had a fierce expression on her face and stood tall with authority.
"Hey gal, how you feeling?" Ash asked.
"Fine," she growled, "where are they going?"
"To finish some sort of search for a young Dratini," Ash explained, "it's meant to test if its ready for a trainer."
"Primitive," she growled, "it's the humans they need to be testing. To see if they deserve one of my species."
"You never seemed to have an issue with me as your trainer," Ash replied.
"Climb on, we'll follow and talk along the way," Dragonite replied, crouching down.
He didn't need to be told twice and climbed onto her back. Flying with each off his Pokémon is a unique experience but a magical one. He wasn't even sure Dragonite would let him ride, considering her high maintenance. Once he was secure on her back, Dragonite shot up.
Ash's stomach was left behind.
"You protected me in my time of need and have shown nothing but respect," Dragonite replied, "you proved yourself worthy so I shall follow you to the best of my ability, whatever comes up. I have a duty to those under me and you have proven to help just the same. That's why I've accepted you as my trainer, no one else."
Ash was trying to get use to the powerful force as the wind blew past him. Each of his flying types have unique way of flying, Pidgeot was the most skilful, Aerodactyl specialises in speed and Charizard was powerful but Dragonite, it was like the skill, power and speed all in one. He lowered his head to get a good sense before responding.
"So you wouldn't accept Serena?" Ash asked, "or my other friends?"
"Out of all your friends, the ones you travel with, they are all fine humans and pleasant company," Dragonite replied, "if it was a matter of life and death, or if you personally asked then I would follow them. I wouldn't compete in a contest or friendly battle just for the sake of it, however."
"And my other friends?" Ash asked, "Leaf, Gary... Drake?"
"As for those three, I would protect them but in a bad situation I wouldn't trust their judgement," Dragonite replied, "at least those first two."
"And Drake?" Ash asked.
"He has a strategic mind and has proven capable in such situations from what I've observed," Dragonite replied, "but he isn't nearly as noble as yourself and I don't trust him as a result. Like the other two, I'd protect him if needed but I wouldn't follow him because... I can't be certain of his driving force."
Ash frowned at that, he knew Pokémon trusted their trainer and thus had no reason or obligation to trust the trainers friends but to know one of his own Pokémon actively distrusts his own brother is another thing entirely. Sure, Sandslash doesn't trust his friends and won't let them know about his past but that's more of a personal reason and he just doesn't trust anyone.
"I believe I've spotted them," Dragonite informed, "hold on tight."
He forced his eyes shut and held on tight as possible, feeling the wind past him at a much faster speed. He felt like he was just free-falling. Until everything came to a complete stop as he felt like he should've continued downwards. Despite stopping, he felt like he was still falling, weakly sliding off his Dragonite's back onto the ground.
Landing on his knees, he meekly opened his eyes to see the world spinning.
"Please don't be over dramatic," he heard Dragonite speak. Looking upwards, he saw her standing slightly to the side, still spinning he saw Clair approach, looking down at him before her hand was held out.
"So you decided to follow us?" her voice echoed in his head.
"Err, y-yeah," he replied, shaking his head to try and return to reality. He accepted the gesture and was pulled to his feet, "Dragonite wasn't nearly as gentle as my Pidgeot or my other flying types."
"Then I won't be used as your personal taxi," Dragonite grunted, "thankfully."
"So err, did Dratini find the Dragon Fang yet?" Ash asked.
"Well they are currently searching under the water," Clair replied, "so whilst we wait, did you figure out the lesson yet?"
"Not exactly," Ash admitted.
"Well we still have time left in the day," Clair replied but a burst of water from the lake drew both of their attentions. Turning to see it, they saw Kingdra with its usual strong glare and Dratini in front of it, holding something in its mouth. Clair leaned down to it and took the item from Dratini's mouth, "well done, you found the dragon fang alright."
"So does that mean you'll be returning to Blackthorn?" Ash asked.
"Not yet," Clair replied, "we have a few days of trials to pass first. But don't worry, I'll be returning the day after the breeders competition."
"So who's the trainer you're getting Dratini ready for?" Ash asked.
"A young boy, called Ryuki," Clair replied, "he's made it clear he wants to be the next Lance. A Dragon type master. He's got a passion for music as well and can be a little loud, but I've prepared him personally and I know he'll do great things as a trainer."
Ash couldn't help but chuckle to himself, the kid must be so excited and the fact he gets to start with a Dratini of all Pokémon. It truly takes Ash back to the days before he became a trainer and met Pikachu.
"Well why don't we return to your friends," Clair suggested, "I'm guessing where they are surprised by your speeding off on Dragonite."
Ash nodded in agreement and he returned his Dragonite before they set off back down the riverside. The Dratini jumped into Clair's arms before falling asleep as Kingdra swam ahead, as if some sort of guard. At least this walk is a nice relaxation after the bumpy flight over.
A few hours later, Ash was stood on a dirt path, looking at Clair. His friends were behind him and the dragon type specialist stood tall with the small Dratini by her feet. It was late afternoon, but they could still get some travel time in, so this was the goodbye.
"Guess I'll be seeing you all in just under a week at my gym," Clair smirked.
"I guess so," Ash replied, "can I ask, what sort of battle will it be? I don't want to know against who but if it's one on one or two on two."
"I've looked you up Ash, I know you're a promising trainer and seeing as you won the last Orange league, I wanted to truly challenge you," Clair explained, "it will be a six on six battle but five of my team will be my eight badge team."
"Only five?" Serena asked, "so what about your sixth member?"
"Tell me children, what do you know about the recruitment process of an elite four member or champion?" Clair asked.
"It's a position advertised but sometimes specific trainers are sought out to apply," Brock explained, "gym leaders are usually those sought after but not always. But other than that, I'm not sure."
"Well your right, they make a short list of candidates for the position and then each one has a year to collect all eight badges from that region," Clair replied, "if they are a gym leader of said region, then they auto get their own badge, but each leader has a specific team to test them. Their ultimate team."
"Wait, I'm meant to take over my family gym and I've not heard about this," Misty spoke up.
"Don't worry, it'll be better explained when you start your position and you'll have a set period to prepare this team," Clair replied, "but as to answer the other question, the last member of my team will be from this team used to challenge the new elite four members."
"Huh?" Ash blinked in surprise; he'll be taking on a Pokémon meant to battle the elite four?!
"Don't worry, you won't need to beat them, but I'd be impressed if you could," Clair smiled, "you should know, my Dragonair you met today is a part of that team, but it won't be the one you face. Is this a fine enough challenge for you?"
"Um yeah, I guess," Ash stuttered.
"And when I say you won't need to beat them, of course I mean this sixth member of my team. They will be the last one, rest assured," Clair explained, "but the other five you will need to."
"Of course," Ash replied.
"So I hope you bring a team strong enough to handle it," Clair smirked, "your gonna need it."
It took them two days, but they were able to make their way to Blackthorn. It was a quaint little village, not really fitting of being classed as a city, even Cherrygrove was bigger if memory served Ash right. Still, the huts that made up the homes of residence gave it a very earthly feel. Possibly the only modern building in the place was the Pokémon centre and that is probably because of it needing to meet regulations or something like that.
He took a deep breath, his eyes dancing over the cloudy sky as the sun was partly blocked out. He smiled as he remembered the last two days since he encountered Clair and his Dragonite finally evolved but it was really her final words to him that had the biggest effect. It was possibly the biggest help he's had since he lost Gyarados.
Shaking his head, a large smile spreading on his face. He looked down to find himself stood around the a few dirt fields on the outback of the Pokémon centre. There were mostly coordinators out, practising. His own girlfriend was a little bit away practising her own routine. They have still been distant, like he has been since the lake, but it's been getting better. After all, before he would shrug off her shows of affection but if she was to try now, he probably would let her.
Not wanting to focus on that right now, he move away and found a bench free. He made his way and sat down, his Pikachu jumping up onto the seat next to him. He scratched him behind the ear before reaching to his belt, pulling off a Pokeball and Ultra Ball. He quickly opened them and her Dragonite and Aerodactyl appeared.
"Hey guys," Ash smiled. Both his large flying types gave a small acknowledge by gesturing their head. Pikachu jumped down and walked between them. It felt good, seeing all three of them together, it's hard to explain why.
"Not that you don't have a beautiful smile, Ashton," Dragonite spoke first, "but I hope we weren't released just to look at it."
"Since when do you call me Ashton?" Ash asked.
"Since she thinks you're being a naughty boy," Pikachu pipped up. He was promptly hit by her tail, "hey! That's a tale I could do not needing to tell."
"Can we just focus on the point of this conversation?" Aerodactyl asked, "I believe it has to do with the upcoming gym battle."
"Right," Ash agreed, "as you know, Clair has something special planned, something that's a part of the elite four challenge. So we need to be on top form."
"Agreed," Dragonite replied, "so you already have us two to handle the heavy hitting so-"
"Hey! What about Aerodactyl?!" Pikachu asked, "he may be old, but he's still got some moves."
"I'm pretty sure you was the one she didn't consider as a heavy hitter," Aerodactyl rubbed Pikachu on the head.
"Correct," Dragonite agreed, "and as I was saying. We need to confirm the final four members of this team. I know your fond of the mouse but he's hardly useful against dragon types."
"Want to say that to my face?!" Pikachu asked, cheeks sparking.
"Settle down you two," Aerodactyl butted in, "I for one think Pikachu would be useful. As a smaller more agile opponent, he would be better at avoiding attacks, his jokey attitude would work well to anger his opponents and an angry opponent is less tactical. Not to mention, its highly possible water will play a good part in the battle, as you imparticular battle with water attacks and its highly possible that Clair will have a Kingdra or something."
"Finally, someone understands my awesomeness," Pikachu sighed, "thank you, Aerodactyl."
"Now that's sorted," Ash replied, "I did want your opinion on something. Should I let Togetic take part?"
"Sure, why not?" Pikachu asked, "let him live a little."
"But you already have two flying types," Dragon added, "call me sceptical, but I think half a team like that would be leaving a big opening."
"Agreed," Aerodactyl spoke up, "but I have another suggestion."
"What's that?" Ash asked.
"I don't think I should be a part of this team," Aerodactyl replied, "I know you relied on me to battle the Dragonite before, but I am not especially good at facing dragon types in general. If you want me to battle then I will but I can't help but feel that Togetic is better suited."
"If you don't want to battle, Aerodactyl, then I won't force you," Ash replied.
"It's not that I don't want to battle but Togetic clearly wants it so let him have it in my place," Aerodactyl smiled, "you also have Dragonite for the heavy hitting."
"So me, Dragonite and Togetic," Pikachu counted, "who else are we bringing? It's gonna be a full battle, after all."
"Might I suggest, Lapras is the obvious choice," Dragonite spoke up.
"Ah, your protégé," Pikachu replied, waving his paw around his head with his fingers together, like some sort of chef.
"Doesn't he have a Pokeball or something?" Dragonite asked, "he is very much getting on my nerves."
"Love you too, sweetie," Pikachu replied.
"Cut it out, you two. And yes. I agree with your idea of using Lapras, being an ice type and all," Ash replied, "and as for the next one, I thought Venusaur."
"Venusaur?" Dragonite asked, "I respect him as much as the next mon, but I doubt he would work well in a dragon type gym."
"I don't know," Aerodactyl intervened, "I mean, I don't think he would work well one on one but with his damage over time and stall tactics, it would work well to help support in other battles. It's a risky tactic but if anyone could pull it off, its Venusaur and I can't really think of another option from your current line up."
"Sure, let the old guy stretch his vines," Pikachu added.
"So now we only need one spot left," Ash replied, "and I'll be honest, I'm kinda out of ideas."
"Excuse my bracefulness but it seems to me you have agility, support, power and type advantage," Aerodactyl counted, "all it appears your missing is endurance."
"Surely Venusaur covers endurance," Dragonite replied.
"He's capable, that's for certain," Aerodactyl replied, "but if he's playing support he'll need to move in and out to cover not just one Pokémon. If he's going endurance, then he'll need to fight one on one possibly one on two, depending on how many Pokémon ahead Clair is. He won't be capable of fulfilling both roles."
"As far as I can tell, from whose left to pick from, we have two options for endurance," Pikachu spoke up, "I mean. Technically we can take anyone, but I doubt Primeape or Charizard can take a hit like how we need. Anyway, I was talking about either Blastoise or Snorlax."
"I agree, they are the best options for endurance," Aerodactyl agreed, "but since we already have Lapras on hand, another water type wouldn't be the best choice."
"Snorlax should do fine, I feel," Dragonite agreed.
"So you two, Togetic, Lapras, Venusaur and Snorlax," Ash counted.
"That sounds like a good line up," Aerodactyl nodded in agreement.
"But Aerodactyl, if you don't mind," Ash looked him in the eye, "I would like you to be in your Pokeball at the lab. I mean, if things go wrong and I need your experience, it'll be nice to just need to switch you though the Pokedex."
"Of course," Aerodactyl agreed, "but I really doubt that you'll need me that badly."
"Thank you," Ash smiled, "now if you'll excuse me. I'll go and call the Professor then we can start training."
All three Pokémon nodded in agreement before Ash pulled out a single Pokeball before recalling his Aerodactyl. He stood up and made a short jog towards the inside of the centre. He trusted his other two Pokémon to get into training without him. This is the best he has felt since the lake... he was excited about what the future holds.
