Author's Note:
Here it is, another contest and a Serena focused chapter. We get to see a new 'rival' for Serena but it's her first mentor-like rival. Miette and Amelia were more of the antagonist rivals while Shauna was sort of a mentor with her showing Serena about contests, but she was more of a friend. As for Serena's appeals performance, I tried to make it something different, hope you like it. Also please all stay safe with what's been going on, hope those stuck in their home will get a little entertainment from this chapter. Don't forget to vote in the poll, it will change next chapter and with that, let's begin.
Chapter 70: Blackthorn Contest: Final Chance
Serena blinked her eyes awake. She was lying on her side, looking around the room she saw Pikachu curled up on a small chair. She could see the entrance to the room with her's and Ash's bags leaning against the wall leading towards it. On the bedside table was a collection of Pokeballs which contained her current team.
A smile appeared on her face as she remembered this was the day of her contest. She sat up, stretching her arms up as a yawn escaped her mouth. Shivering as the quilt fell of her, exposing her to the cool air. The room was barely lit by the sun peeking through the curtains, but it was still mostly confined and dark but enough to make out where everything was without turning the light on. She made a quick mental note of everything she has to do before going for the contest but a quick glance at the clock showed she had more than enough time, it was still pretty early.
As she prepared to leave the bed, she caught sight of her boyfriend. He was on his side as well but facing away from her. She sighed. It's been like this ever since the lake and he lost Gyarados. At first, she was understanding about his loss and made it clear she would help him in any way he needed. After they met Clair, he appeared to be mostly better and has been truly enjoying each day since, but he has still been distant. If he is better, why is he still distant?
Not wanting to dwell on it for any longer than needed, she through the quilt cover off her and swung her legs to the side of the bed. She shivered as her feet came in contact with the cold floor. Even her light pink night-hoodie and pajama shorts couldn't keep her warm. She knew that cuddling up to Ash, being held in his arms would keep her warm but no, she can't focus on that. She has to remain focused on this contest. It's her last chance for the fifth ribbon to get her into the Grand Festival.
Deciding not to wait any longer, she jumped to her feet before silently shuffling across the floor. Her first stop was the wardrobe where her clean regular travelling clothes lay, her blue ribbon resting on top. A smile crossed her lips as she remembered when Ash gave her that ribbon. If nothing else, that proved that they are still as strong as ever, and when he is truly back, they will pick up where they left off. Picking up her outfit for the day, she made her way into the bathroom, turning on the light before closing the door behind her. Making sure everything was in place, she made herself ready for the shower and got in it. Half way through washing her hair, she heard a slight knock on the door.
"Morning," Ash's voice echoed through into the room. He sounded half asleep, he was probably woken up by her movement in the room or the sound of the shower that woke him, not that it really matters.
"Good morning," she called back, "I won't be too much longer."
"Don't rush," he replied
Despite him telling her not to, she decided to hurry up anyway. Not only does she have to get ready and also Ash needs to get ready, but she wants time to go through the plan with her team before heading off to the contest hall. She can remember checking it out yesterday, it's not a traditional contest hall, not in the slightest. Its being held in a cave of all things but seeing them setting up the audience and lights, it will be a truly unique experience and shouldn't affect the planned appeals round they have.
Once finished cleaning herself, she turned the shower off before getting out, drying herself and then getting dressed. As she opened the door that lead back to the main room, she saw Ash jumping around the room. He still had his pajama bottoms on, but his top was off. Togetic was out of his Pokeball and was floating just out of his reach with his hat in tow. It was clear the happiness Pokémon was playing some sort of game with him. Serena couldn't stop the smile spreading on her face, as she giggled at the sight.
With every cell in her body telling her not to, she couldn't stop herself from staring at his chest for a little bit. It wasn't overly muscular but from their travels and him working out along his Pokémon when they train, he wasn't skinny either. Normally she wouldn't be so mesmerised but considering how long it's been since they cuddled or anything, she can't be blamed, can she? Just the thought of being held in those arms again made her body tingle in that warm sensation that she loved. Her own arms, absentmindedly wrapping themselves around her body as if trying to capture that feeling. Shaking her head of such thoughts, she approached them, as Togetic fluttered back down.
"Bathrooms free," she greeted.
"Oh yeah," he replied, turning to face her, "thanks."
She stopped right in front of him, her hand slowly raising but before she could make any sort of contact with him. She could only watch as he made his way over to the bathroom. Her heart ached as her hand fell back down to her side. He really is looking like he's back to normal so why isn't he feeling like it?
A high pitched squeal drew her attention and she looked up to see Togetic was floating around her, some small sparkles trickling down. She couldn't help but smile at the happiness Pokémon. Even if she isn't as close to him as Ash is or even as close as she is to her own Pokémon, Togetic is still very special indeed.
"Thank you, Togetic," she replied.
Serena stood still as she looked at the large cave that housed todays contest. After Ash finished getting ready, they went down stairs to meet with Misty and Brock to have breakfast and she also ran through the plan with her team. There was only an hour left before it was due to start.
The cave might've seemed intimidating based on the entrance's rugged design but the workers and que to enter made it more welcoming. Not to mention, the lights hanging across the ceiling which lit the cave down. She sighed as she read the two different signs, one was showing the long cue as those who were coming to watch while the other one was for competing coordinators. A single worker was stood at the second one, probably because they are escorted back stage, same as the other contests.
She turned to face her friends. "Well guys, guess this is where we say goodbye."
"Goodluck Serena," Ash smiled at her, "I know you'll do great."
"Thanks," she replied, forcing a smile onto her lips. While it was nice what he said, it hurt that he didn't even offer a hug or that he did the encouragement with the others still around. Before the lake he would give her a hug or a kiss and whisper his words of encouragement. It's a small difference but-
"You knock their socks off, Serena," Misty added.
"You'll knock it out of the park," Brock smiled.
"Thanks guys," she replied before her eyes burst open. She quickly reached to her belt and unclipped a Pokeball, "that's right. Could you guys take Hitmontop to watch with you?"
"Sure," Ash replied, holding his hand out for the Pokeball which Serena gladly dropped into it, "how come?"
"Well he didn't really take an interest in our appeals performances when we was practising and spent most of the time training by himself," Serena explained, "I don't think he'll ever do an appeals round but he agreed to watch the battle rounds so he could see if that sort of battling would be his thing."
"Do you think that he'd like it?" Brock asked.
"I'm not sure, I know he is very boisterous and hates anything that isn't typically masculine but Beedrill was like that too and he enjoyed the contest battle," Serena explained with a sigh, "plus there's Farfetch'd who loves showing off but likes to act tough so maybe. It'll be nice to have something we can work on together, like that."
"Well Serena, out of everyone here you are the only one he shows respect to," Brock nodded his head, as if to suggest he got what she meant, "so it's likely he'd work with you even if not exactly his thing."
"I don't know," Serena admitted, "I mean, he said he only respected me because of my psychic power."
"Well then, your half way there," Misty encouraged, throwing her fist in the air, "all you need to do is show him that you should be respected regardless."
"And knock out his hatred for fairy types, Togetic's alright because he has Pikachu and the others to stop him, but he'll spend time with Sylveon eventually or what if any of us catch another fairy type? It's not good to have two Pokémon on the same team at each other's throats."
"You mean like Sandslash and Dragonite?" Misty asked, in her usual teasing tone.
"Well yeah, I guess," Ash replied, scratching his cheek in a sheepish manner, "but at least they can work together when needed."
"I know guys and maybe once we start working together he'll open up about why he hates fairy types and we can go from there," Serena explained, "but I think I really need to get going. They have to get everyone seated, after all and yeah."
The three others nodded in understanding, so she gave them a quick bye before running over to the single worker by the competing coordinator sign. After showing her contest pass to confirm she is registrared to compete, another worker came and lead her through the cave. As she did, she thought back to what her friends said about Hitmontop. She knows he has an issue but just like Sandslash, he won't come out and say it. Until he does, how is she meant to help him?
It didn't take them long to reach the room where all the other coordinators were. Well, not so much a room but a cavern within the cave. Benches were set up with some mirrors and a television hanging from a wall. It was clear they tried to make it similar to the backstage rooms at other contest halls, but it was still obviously a cave.
Knowing she had a while to wait for her appeals performance, she took a seat on an empty bench and soon the contest got underway. She watched the coordinators appeals on the television as she felt scared. Her performance isn't what a typical appeals round is and not to mention, the last and only double contest she did was the Wallace Cup.
"Mind if I take a seat?" a new voice asked.
Serena looked up to see a young women who was probably close to twenty, her hair was long, free-flowing with a sort of orange-pink samon colour which contrast nicely with her piercing blue eyes. A yellow jacket that looked in a similar style to a trench coat, but it didn't go all the way down to her feet, with a burning red belt around her waist.
"Of course," she replied, offering the women a friendly smile.
"Thanks," she replied, "I'm Solidad, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Solidad, I'm Serena," she replied, "I guess you're competing too, today."
"Uh-huh," she nodded, "although I probably shouldn't be."
"How come?" Serena asked.
"Well I already have all five ribbons for the Grand Festival," she explained, "this is little more than practice for us to get ready."
Serena wasn't sure what to say, this women already has the five ribbons needed to entre and she still has to win her spot in the competition by winning today. Sure, she has a good team ready, but she clearly has some serious competition. Not to mention all the other coordinators who are in the same boat with only one ribbon left to win.
"Oh sorry," Solidad added, "I didn't mean to intimidate you or anything."
"Its fine, I would rather know what I'm up against, to be honest," Serena reassured her.
"If that's the case, then there's something else you might want to know," Solidad replied.
"What's that?" she asked.
"This isn't my first grand festival. It's a second one," Solidad explained, "and I won my first won a couple years ago in Hoenn."
Serena gave a hard swallow as those words echoed in her head. This women, the one she is competing against is already a top coordinator. Stretching her fingers out, it was as if her mind left her body as the seriousness of this competitor sunk in. Even if she somehow wins today, which is highly unlikely now, she will still have to face Solidad at the Grand Festival... maybe she's way in over her head.
"I'm sorry, I did it again, didn't I?" Solidad asked, bowing her head in apology, "but it wouldn't have been secret for much longer anyway."
"How come?" Serena managed to ask.
"Because whenever an accomplished coordinator is participating, they like to announce that sort of thing, to get the audience hyped," Solidad explained, "but I don't want you to be scared or doubt yourself, Serena."
"Why?" she asked.
"Because I've looked you up, I like to keep an eye on coordinators who would make a decent challenge or who I could learn from," Solidad smiled, "you are one such coordinator. I didn't think I'd meet you before the Grand Festival though."
"I'm not that special," Serena replied, "I did horribly at the Wallace Cup. I only have four ribbons and it's my first Grand Festival. Why focus on me?"
"It's not just you, like I said it a number of different coordinators, you just so happen to be one here today," Solidad replied, "and you should have more confidence in yourself, Serena. When you started, you won your first few contests by a large margin, most new coordinators have a hard learning curve at the start. Then I looked into your past record and you are the youngest person to day to beat Kanto's Chateau challenge. Sure, your Wallace cup didn't end well but that was down to a simple error in judgement, even the best can make them from time to time and you came back with a vengeance in the Eckruteak's contest. If I'm being honest, I think you might be my biggest obstacle at this Grand Festival. You have an inapt ability to come back stronger than ever, even after a defeat."
Serena could feel a light pink hit her cheeks as she listened to Solidad's praise. Confidence has always been an issue for her, maybe that's why she was so drawn to Ash, he never seemed to doubt himself but even now, after all she has accomplished as a trainer and coordinator, there is that voice in the back of her head.
"Thank you," she replied, a hand clutching the air over her heart.
"Calling Serena Yvonne for the stage," a stage hand called out.
"Sorry Solidad, but I've got to go. If I don't see you before, good look for the appeals round," Serena replied, standing up with two Pokeballs in hand.
"I'm sure I'll see you before then, my performance is scheduled last," Solidad smiled, "but I'm sure you'll do great. Good luck. I look forward to see what you have planned."
Serena smiled as she turned around and made her way over to the stage hand who smiled an acknowledgement before turning around and leading the way down the corridor that was lit by lamps on the wall. Serena happily followed behind, taking big deep breaths to calm herself before the performance began.
They soon came to a stop, behind the stage and out of sight. The current coordinator gave a bow with his two Pokémon next to him. One being a Scizor the other being a Hitmonlee. She couldn't really guess what his performance was, but the audience cheered so it must've been good. He made his way past her, as Lilian appeared on the stage.
"And next we have a well-established coordinator who only needs one more ribbon to enter the Grand Festival!" Lilian hyped, "from Pallet Town in Kanto, its Serena Yvonne!"
As the lights lowered, Serena ran out onto the stage hidden from view of the crowd. Once in position, she tossed her two Pokeballs up into the air and in a flash of light both her Kangashkan and Jumpluff appeared. Jumpluff made her way over to the middle of the stage while Kangashkan-
Roo jumped out of its mothers pouch and onto the stage. It was dark but the few lights scattered revealed the large group of humans watching. It took a hesitant step backwards but felt a reassuring thought from Serena. It can do this; they have practised for it after all. Suddenly, a bright light covered it
"Roo took a stroll through a deep dark woods," Serena's voice echoed around it, "a Delphox saw Roo, and Roo looked good."
Turning to his side, Roo came face to face with a large Delphox although it wasn't Serena's. No, this one was white and fluffy and didn't have the same kind expression on its face. Of course, it wasn't detailed enough for any sort of expression but Jumpluff did good.
"Where are you going, underling Roo," Serena read in a sort of royal tone, "come and have lunch, at my underground do!"
"That's terribly kind of you, Delphox, but no," Serena continued, in a more child-like voice, "because I'm going to have Lunch with a Gruffalo."
"A Gruffalo? What's a Gruffalo?" Serena replied in her Delphox voice.
"A Gruffalo? Why, didn't you know?" Serena continued in her Roo voice, "it has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth, in its terrible jaws."
As she went through the description, Roo giggled to itself but began using his arms to emphasise each body part that was described. When she first suggested this fairy-tale performance, Roo wasn't sure but now that it's happening, and it knows what to do to make the story work.
"Where are you meeting him?" Serena asked, back in her Delphox voice.
"Here by these rocks, and his favourite food is self-roasted-Delphox," Serena replied in her Roo voice.
Roo smiled as it jumped through the Cotton-guard Delphox. It disappeared around him, floating up like bubbles in a bath. Landing on the ground, Roo began walking on the spot as he already knew which part was next.
"On went Roo through the deep dark woods," Serena narrated in her regular voice, "a Noctowl saw Roo, and Roo looked good."
"Where are you going to, little purple Roo," Serena changed her voice again, to that of an elderly professor. A large cotton Noctowl appearing in front of Roo with again, fairly little in terms of actual features but got a good overall shape, "come and have tea, and I won't attack with a pew."
"It's frightfully nice of you, Noctowl, but no," Serena replied, back to her Roo voice, "I'm going to have tea with the Gruffalo."
"A Gruffalo?" She replied in Noctowl's voice, "what's a Gruffalo?"
"A Gruffalo, why didn't you know?" she returned to the Roo voice, "he has nobly knees, and turned out toes, and a poisonous wart on the end of his nose."
"Where are you meeting him?" she asked, in Noctowl's voice.
"Here by this stream," she continued in the Roo voice, "and his favourite food is Noctowl ice cream."
Letting out a small growl, mostly from excitement, Roo jumped up before pulling its small fist back and punching through the cotton-guard Noctowl. Just like the first one, it dispersed into small clouds before raising up and disappearing. While Roo landed on the ground on one knee, punching the ground.
"On went Roo through the deep dark woods," Serena narrated, "A Serperior saw Roo, and Roo looked good."
"Where are you going to, little dear Roo," Serena hissed in a more threatening tone, "come and have a fest with my log pile crew."
A cotton-guard snake that trailed off stage. This one loomed over top and was much larger, mainly because Serperior was one Pokémon they never met and only had a vague idea of it from the Pokedex. The story itself was actually one momma-Kanga would tell Roo, but she would swap the Pokémon in it around... and it didn't always rhyme, that was brother-Larvitar's idea. Of course, coming up with rhymes isn't so easy but- oh no, he almost forgot the story isn't over.
"-A Gruffalo, why didn't you know?" Serena asked, in her Roo voice, "his eyes are orange, his tongue is black, and he has purple prickles all over his back."
"Where are you meeting him?" Serena asked, hissing the last word.
"Here by this lake and his favourite food is sizzling Serperior stake," she replied in her Roo voice.
Running forward, Roo did more of a tackle through this cotton-guard Pokémon which resulted in the end. It rolled on the ground for a little, that wasn't exactly planned but this floor is pretty slippery. Whoever made that decision is beyond Roo.
"Roo continued on through the deep dark wood, until he saw a light, and his fear make him stop where he stood," Serena narrated, as Roo's mamma appeared on stage with some sort of outfit "in front of him was a creature with terrible claws, terrible teeth in its terrible jaws. It has nobbles knees, and turned out toes and a poisonous wart on the end of its nose. Its eyes are orange, its tongue is black, and it has purple prickles all over its back."
"Oh help! Oh no!" Serena cried in her Roo voice, "it's a Gruffalo!"
Momma-Kanga did a loud roar as she flexed her arms before Jumpluff floated through the stage, a light fairy wind trailing behind her like some sort of fairy flying through the forest. Unfortunately, they don't have quite enough time to complete the story.
Jumpluff floated in front of them and flashed bright as the lights turned on completely. A loud thunder appeared along with the cheers of the humans. As Jumpluff's shine faded, Roo looked up to see itself surrounded by Serena, momma-Kanga and Jumpluff. Smiling to itself, Roo did a bow towards the human crowd, as the others followed.
Solidad smiled as she watched the screen. Serena just finished her appeals performance and it was truly a treat to watch. Most performances, while entertaining were basically the same sort of flashy, appealing show to demonstrate power and skill of the Pokémon. While already a top coordinator in her own right, Solidad is ashamed to admit she is guilty of basically the same cliché. She always took care to choreograph her appeals performances, but they were still mainly about sceptical.
Of course, she has seen other coordinators try unique and interesting concepts but most of them were either hit or miss but this was the first time she saw a play between the Pokémon and while the story was very simplistic, it was captivating and showed how skilled her team was considering they didn't need any sort of cue or direction and just got on with the show. Even little Roo, child actors are normally looked down upon, but it did very well and truly incorporated an important aspect about Kangashkan since most of the time, the baby just rests in its pouch.
Smiling as she caught the last of the judges' comments, she rolled a single Pokeball through her fingers. She doesn't need to compete in this contest, not in the slightest but she did to check out the competition for the grand festival and honestly, after that performance, she has no-doubts that she'll be seeing Serena in the battle rounds.
Just as the screen switched to Lilian announcing the next performer, the young honey-blonde girl walked back into the backstage. She didn't really wait for any sort of reaction or anything and made her way over to an empty bench, physically relaxing into the seat. Smiling at the relief on the girls face, Solidad stood up before walking over.
"Mind if I join ya?" she asked.
"Huh?" Serena replied, looking up at her, "sure Solidad. What's up?"
Solidad did just as she asked and took the seat next to Serena. The cerulean-eyed girl was watching her, clearly expecting some sort of answer but Solidad instead stretched, relaxing into the bench before glancing over the television screen. The current performer was doing a sort of water fire combination with a Ninetales and Octillery. It was certainly entertaining but a bit bland, especially after the performance Serena put on. Solidad smiled and turned to face said coordinator.
"That was a great performance, Serena, I don't think I've ever seen one which involved a play by the Pokémon and using Kangashkan so her child could act while she did some of the special effects was a stroke of genius," Solidad praised.
"Oh, well um, thank you," she replied, her cheeks turning a rose pink colour, "that means a lot."
"Because I'm a top coordinator?" she asked, the corner of her mouth flicking up into a smirk.
"No no," Serena waved her hands out, furiously shaking her head in response, "I mean it would mean a lot coming from anyone."
"Relax Serena, I'm just playing with you," Solidad assured her.
The Kanto native sighed and relaxed back into the bench. Her eyes slide shut as her shoulders dropped. Solidad smiled at this reaction as it had the desired effect, it's hard for anyone to relax after being stressed over something and even with the performance over, that stress doesn't just evaporate for the coordinators or their Pokémon, its why most coordinators use different Pokémon for the different rounds.
"So why don't you tell me why that performance had you so worked up?" Solidad asked, "I get that it isn't easy but you're going for your fifth ribbon so it's a little late for first time jitters."
"It's just... no I'm being silly," Serena shook her head, "you don't want to hear about it. Not since you still have your performance and we have the battle rounds... if I get that far."
"Oh, you definitely will," Solidad assured, "just the concept alone gets you points for being unique and it was a good performance on top of that."
"Thanks," she managed a small smile.
"So why was you worked up?" Solidad asked, more forcefully.
"It's just... The performance, I didn't know if it would work. It's not like the typical contest performance and-" Serena replied, "-and I guess I was just being silly."
Solidad nodded in understanding before closing her own eyes and leaning back in the chair. She would've been looking up at the ceiling if it wasn't for her closed eyes but that doesn't really matter. Taking a deep breath, she turned to look at Serena, who was already staring back with anticipation.
"Even if the performance didn't work or something went wrong," Solidad released her breath, "you wouldn't have been punished or looked down upon in the rankings. The more unique a concept, as long as it doesn't go against the cores of what the appeals performance is meant to represent, will be looked upon favourably by the judges. You've already proven you could do they more typical performances in previous contests so stepping out like this was only positives."
"Other contests?" Serena questioned, "you mean my previous attempts are added into the judgement?"
"Not completely and a new coordinator that does well won't be held back for not having done one before," Solidad explained, "but if say you just rehashed the same appeals performance, then yes you wouldn't make it far at all. Its more so-."
"Calling Solidad Saori for the stage," a voice echoed through the room.
"Sorry Serena, guess we'll need to catch up later," she apologised standing up from the seat.
"Its fine," Serena replied, "good luck."
"Thanks. After your performance, I think I'll need it," Solidad smiled back before turning around running towards the stage hand.
As she followed the worker towards the stage for her own performance, Solidad smiled as she thought about the young coordinator. When she first decided to enter todays contest, she thought it would be a nice easy warm up for the Grand Festival but now she isn't so sure. She reached into her pocket and pulled out two Pokeballs.
"Well, it's that time again," she thought to herself, a smile spread across her face.
Solidad had a pleasant smile plastered on her face as she walked out onto the stage, two Pokeballs in hand. Appreciating the applause from the crowd, she gave a bow towards them before twirling and tossing the two Pokeballs she was holding up into the air.
In a flash of light, two Pokémon appeared in front of her. The first floating just above her head, a large looking Butterfree with scales which shone under the stage lights and while the cave they were performing in was limited space, it was still large enough for her Butterfree to manuvers in although if she was to use it, her Pidgeot would have a much harder time. The other Pokémon she had was a fluffy orange Flareon who stood tall next to her feet, as if on guard.
"Begin!" she called out.
Both Pokémon charged forward, Flareon coated himself in flames as he bounced forward with surprising speed, while Butterfree flew a little slower, a trail of Stun Spore trickling out behind her. The two Pokémon broke apart, each taking a different end of the stage before turning around and charging towards each other.
Flareon pounced, flames still dancing around him as Butterfree performed a spin over the top. The golden trail behind Butterfree caught fire and a flaming streak through the air but it died out before reaching the bug flying type. The two Pokémon turned around once reaching the stage end, facing off against each other.
"Psychedelic!" she called out.
Flareon formed a purple ball of ghost energy at his mouth before swinging his head round and launching the Shadow Ball across the stage. It didn't travel in a straight path either, instead having a sort of spin on it so it skidded close to the ground before homing in on Butterfree.
The butterfly Pokémon didn't attempt to dodge and instead had her antenna's tense up. A quick beam of multicoloured psychic type energy shot out of her antenna's before destroying the Shadow Ball which exploded like a fire work. Several more Shadow Balls were travelling towards her but as if some sort of automated machine, Butterfree used her Psybeam to quickly shoot all of them down, creating a series of fireworks for the crowd to see.
"Fire wall!" she hollered.
Through the series of fireworks, Butterfree flew and swirled upwards towards the ceiling. Flareon appeared right underneath her. A large trail of purple powder began to fall behind her and onto the fire type eeveelution.
As Flareon disappeared from view, a giant wall of fire appeared blocking Solidad from the audience. She could make out some sort of movement near the centre but that was probably because she knows how it's meant to finish.
Catching sight of Flareon at the top of this fire wall, he began to fall as his metal covered tail cut down the middle of the display. Each side of the wall swirling around into a sort of fire tornado as he landed, Butterfree floating down afterwards with eyes glowing. All the flames quickly died down under the psychic pressure.
And the crowd cheered as Solidad joined her two Pokémon on stage. Together they all gave a bow as Lilian ran back onto the stage.
"A masterful display from a veteran on the contest stage," the MC announced among the applause, "but what did our judges think?"
"Using two Pokémon to perform a choreographed battled, inspired, especially since one didn't out shine the other with an obvious type advantage," Mr Contesta nodded in approval.
"Remarkable!" Mr Sukizo added.
"Both Butterfree and Flareon are clearly well taken care of and seemed to have fun," Nurse Joy smiled.
Solidad bowed a thank you before returning her two Pokémon to their Pokeballs. She didn't need to be told what to do as she has done enough contests. As she made her way back stage, she heard Lilian once more.
"Now that we have seen all our coordinators, we will have a short intermission while our judges discuss who'll move on to the top four and the battle rounds!"
Ash stretched from within his seat. It wasn't the most comfortable, being one of those cheap camping chairs from most big retailers instead of the pre-installed seats that the other contest halls have. Shaking his head, he looked down at the Pokeball Serena gave him before they parted ways. Well, now is as good a time as any. Enlarging the device in his hand, he pressed the middle button and in a flash of light, Hitmontop appeared in front of him.
The fighting type looked up with a scowl over his eyes. His head leaning to one side before the other, as if some sort of fighter, crackling to intimidate his opponent, while he cracked his knuckles at the same time.
"What do you want?" he asked.
"Serena asked me to let you watch the contest battles," Ash replied
"So it's her turn?" he asked.
"Well, not yet," Ash admitted, "it's the intermission while they decide who will be moving onto the battle rounds."
"I knew you was bad with directions, but I didn't realise you were bad at timings too," Hitmontop mumbled.
Ash sighed as he decided it was best not to let the fighting type get to him, it's like he is always trying to pick a fight with someone. Luckily, he stopped attacking Togetic when Pikachu made it clear he would shock him if he tried anything against him. It's funny, even though Pikachu and Houndoom don't get on, they are both protective of the happiness Pokémon.
Hitmontop, after waiting a moment, climbed onto a nearby rock, presumably because he couldn't see what was going on. Ash shook his head at the abrasive Pokémon, it's like he is always trying to pick a fight. Sure, he may have anger issues like Sandslash but Sandslash rarely started arguments, he just ended them.
"Okay everyone, it's time to welcome back our top four finalists to the stage!" Lilian announced as she ran back on stage, "in no particular order we have, Serena Yvonne, Kody Grenville, Solidad Saori and Thomas Dent!"
As she spoke, the four coordinators walked back on stage. Ash cheered for Serena as the audience roared in applause as well. It was a little loud considering the smaller crowd but that was probably because they are in a confide cave tunnel, creating the echo. After a couple moments,
"For our first battle of today, we have Serena Yvonne from Pallet Town against Kody Grenville from Cherrygrove City!" Lilian announced as the two trainers walked out onto the battlefield.
Despite being the regular size, being in a cave made it look more compact. Ash took notice of Kody, he looked nothing more than an average trainer around their age, but he knew that Serena could beat him. Sure, there was that top coordinator that she'll likely have to face in the final, but she will be fine, he's sure of it. Serena and her opponent made their way to the trainer boxes on the field while the other two left the field completely.
"This will be a double battle where both coordinators can use two Pokémon at once with neither side being allowed substitutions," Lilian explained, "both sides pre-registrared their Pokémon and there will be a five minute time limit so let's see who will be battling today. The winner is the one to bring their opponents points the lowest."
"I choose you two, Delphox and Larvitar!" Serena called, releasing her two Pokémon.
Delphox stood tall in front of Serena, as if some sort of body guard while Larvitar was down by her feet. He appeared to be hardened but after a couple seconds, he took a deep breath before relaxing. Anyone that knew them could easily guess Serena sent him a mental message to calm him, she wouldn't use her powers to cheat or win that way but reassure before a tough battle never hurt anyone.
"And I've got you, Aipom and Azumarill!" Kody yelled, releasing his two Pokémon.
The first one Ash has seen a lot of, not so much because the group have an Azumarill but because Misty has been very excited to evolve her Marill and has probably used their Pokedex's to research it more than any other Pokémon. A quick glance to his side and he saw Misty had brought her Marill out, instructing her to watch the Azumarill closely, not a bad idea in all honest. Shaking his head, he looked down at Kody's second Pokémon a sort of purple monkey with a long tail and a hand at the end of it. He smiled as it stood on said tail, clearly a happy Pokémon. Ash pulled out his Pokedex and scanned it:
Aipom, The Long Tail Pokémon. Aipom's tail ends in a hand-like appendage that can be cleverly manipulated. However, because the Pokémon uses its tail so much, its real hands have become rather clumsy. They are very friend but are known to play pranks on humans who wonder into their territory.
"This won't be good for Serena," Brock spoke up, as Ash put his Pokedex away, "both Delphox and Larvitar are weak to water. That Azumarill will be a big issue."
"Water types always are," Misty added.
Ash shook his head at her joke, before looking back at the field ready for the oncoming battle. A quick glance to the side showed Hitmontop sat on top of a rock but he was focused on the field. While originally he took the fighting type as a brute who just looked for fights, this proves that he is at least willing to see what Serena does.
"Delphox and Larvitar verses Aipom and Azumarill," Lilian announced, as she made her way over to the judges panel, "let the battle... begin!"
Serena verses Kody: (top four)
Serena's smile morphed into a smirk as her Larvitar dug into the ground. While some might think of it as counterproductive because he isn't in the spot light, this sort of field is perfect for him and considering his shyness, he can work from the shadows to make Delphox look great. Good think this is a double performance.
Azumarill took a deep breath before launching a powerful, crisp blue Hydro Pump at Delphox. It thundered across the field shimmering of the stage lights.
Delphox took out her stick and did a twirl before countering with a multicoloured Psybeam. The two attacks collided and evened out around centre stage, Serena knew her starter wasn't using full power because that would've made an explosion and that wouldn't be good in a cave like this.
"Aipom use Swift!" Kody yelled.
The normal type jumped into the air before twirling around and swiping its tail in front of it, sending a large swift star towards Delphox.
"Now Larvitar!" Serena called out.
A rock shot out from the ceiling before smashing through the start, which exploded in a dazzling fashion.
Aipom started running across the ground, clearly going in for a close hit on Delphox.
Something burst out of the roof of the cave before tackling Aipom across the ground. He may not be the most sophisticated but Larvitar has a lot of physical strength, especially considering his size.
A glance back at the other battle showed Azumarill still matching Hydro Pump with Psybeam but was showing signs of tiredness. Serena knew she had to take out one of them fast so they had the edge but Larvitar wouldn't have a good chance against Azumarill.
"Fire Pledge!" she shouted.
Delphox raised her foot and slammed it back down. A crack zig-zagged under the clashing attacks, with an orange heat bursting out. It reached Azumarill who couldn't react without allowing the Psybeam to blast through. A pillar of fire erupted around it, cancelling the Hydro Pump.
Serena turned back to the battle between Aipom and Larvitar only to see her rock skin Pokémon go flying upwards. Aipom's tail was clenched into a fist and was glowing, probably some sort of fighting type move.
Aipom began running towards Delphox in a clear last ditch effort to take her down. It jumped and began swinging its tail around as it glew black with a purple outline.
Delphox raised a hand and her eyes glew with Psychic type energy, bringing Aipom to a stop mid-air.
Larvitar shot down from out of the ceiling, pulling his little fist back before delivering a powerful Rock Smash into the trapped normal types stomach. Delphox released her grip so the normal type fell onto the ground with a thud, as Larvitar landed next to Delphox.
"Aipom is unable to continue," Lilian announced, "will Kody and Azumarill be able to make a comeback or is this round already won?"
Kody returned his normal type in a flash of red light, as Larvitar jumped up and down in an excited manner. Serena couldn't help but chuckle at his child-like excitement but that soon stopped as she saw a blue torpedo rocket out of the fire pillar.
"Reflect!" Serena shouted.
Delphox spread her arms out and a box surrounded both herself and Larvitar just before the water torpedo tackled Larvitar backwards.
Luckily the defensive box allowed Larvitar to take it and he dug underground, out of the way, as Delphox turned back to see Azumarill. She raised her stick before launching another Psybeam into her back, blasting her across the ground.
Azumarill crossed her arms to take the hit and was slightly pushed back across the ground.
She stomped her feet before a cloud dust surrounded her. She shot out from underneath it with a pink glow of fairy type energy.
Delphox was tackled to the ground before Azumarill began a brutal assault through the Play Rough.
Larvitar shot out of the wall and tackled Azumarill of Delphox.
They scattered across the floor and Azumarill was quicker at getting up, taking a deep breath-
When a loud buzzer sounded.
"And that's time!" Lilian announced as she ran back on stage, "our coordinator moving onto the final round is... Its Serena Yvonne!"
After her battle, Serena was quickly escorted off the stage as the final two competitors took place on the same field. She barely got to make a seconds eye contact with Solidad before passing each other. Once reaching the waiting room, it was mostly empty other than a few workers and Kody who was packing up his stuff. She gave her two Pokémon some praise and some medicine before letting them rest in their Pokeballs.
With them safe, she relaxed into the bench as her eyes wondered over to the screen showing the current battle. Just as expected, Solidad was leading the battle and her opponent was struggling to even launch an attack, let alone counter or take a point or two. She was using a Lapras and Butterfree. While Lapras was a surprising sight considering the location, it was launching powerful attacks as Butterfree manipulated things to make it showy.
It almost looked choregraphed.
The timer past the three minute remaining mark before a loud buzzer sounded. Solidad's opponent already lost all his points. Oh no, now she has to face her. She may have experience as a coordinator but Solidad is already a top coordinator. There goes her chance at the grand festival. As the two coordinators left the stage, Lilian appeared.
"Give us five minutes to get our two finalists in place!" she announced.
Sighing to herself, Serena stood up and shook her head. She can't give up, even if she doesn't beat Solidad she has to honour her opponent by giving it her all and not to mention, she can't let her own Pokémon down. Regardless of the outcome, all four Pokémon she used today and everyone she used in contests past have done well.
Seeing the stage hand walking towards her, Serena made her way towards her. She was quickly escorted back to the field and took her place in one of the trainers boxes, the lights covering her appearances. Moments later, Solidad appeared and took her own spot in the other trainers box. Lilian ran back on stage as the lights raised.
"This will be a double battle between Serena Yvonne and Solidad Saori where both coordinators can use two Pokémon at once with neither side being allowed substitutions," Lilian explained, "both sides pre-registrared their Pokémon and there will be a five minute time limit so let's see who will be battling today. The winner is the one to bring their opponents points the lowest and will receive this blackthorn ribbon."
"I choose you two, Delphox and Larvitar!" Serena called, releasing her two Pokémon.
Delphox appeared along with Larvitar, her starter pulled out her stick and held it out as if some sort of sorceress about to cast a spell with Larvitar underneath, stood forward with a fierce expression. Serena could feel his nervousness but at least he was putting on a tough face.
"Show time Butterfree and Lapras!" Solidad yelled, releasing her two Pokémon.
In a flash of light, the two Pokémon appeared. Lapras was in the middle, right in front of Solidad while Butterfree floated around, as if some sort of sidekick to a superhero, neither species particularly fierce nor intimidating but knowing who she was facing, Serena found herself in a large shadow.
"Delphox and Larvitar verses Butterfree and Lapras," Lilian announced, as she made her way over to the judges panel, "let the battle... begin!"
Serena VS Solidad: (final)
As soon as the battle started, Butterfree floated high as a bright light covered its body, clearly using some sort of boosting move. It was floating around in some sort of dance that was gentle but also mystical at the same time. While Lapras began to sing in time with the dance, enlarge musical notes drifting from them.
"Flaming stones!" Serena shouted.
Larvitar dug underground before small rocks began shooting upwards from just in front of Delphox. The fire psychic type waved her wand, igniting the rocks as they rocketed towards the two Pokémon.
Some burst through the song notes, while some pelted Lapras directly. A few even threatened Butterfree, but it was too agile, easily floating around them.
"Time for the offensive then," Solidad replied, "Icy Spore!"
Lapras took a deep breath before launching out a wide spread Icy Wind. Butterfree swooped down, just above its partners move before releasing a golden powder onto the Icy Wind below. The two colours blended nicely together as it shot out towards Serena's team.
Larvitar was safe already underground, but Delphox had to act fast. Luckily she already was, using her wand to spin out a Fire Spin wall to block the incoming combination.
With a moment to think, Serena knew that Solidad was going for the less effective moves to make the bigger impact in terms of show. Before she could try to think of some sort of counter, a screech drew her attention.
Larvitar rocketed out of the ground, delivering a powerful Rock Smash to Lapras' head, whose cries of pain was what she heard. However, he soon found himself pinned against the wall as Butterfree trapped him with a Psychic hold. He tried to use bite as he struggled but to no-avail.
"Delphox, free Larvitar!" Serena shouted.
The fire Psychic type spun around as several fire balls appeared around her, they shot forward before an Ice Beam scrapped her side. Serena knew she went with Will-o-Wisp because Lapras wouldn't allow a full on attack.
Delphox spun out of the way before flicking her stick across the ground, countering the Ice Beam with a flamethrower.
Looking towards Butterfree, Serena hopped to see Larvitar at least was free but to her dismay, Butterfree was glowing with a Safeguard as the Will-o-Wisps floated around her, the flames making its scales glow even more.
"Now!" Solidad yelled.
In the blink of an eye, Larvitar was frown from the wall and down at an angle. Serena barely had time to contemplate it before he smashed into the colliding attacks between Delphox and Lapras.
He continued forward, rolling into the ground before knocking Delphox over.
As Serena's starter pushed herself up, a loud buzzer sounded, and Lilian ran back on stage.
"And times up!" Lilian announced, "the winner is... Solidad Saori!"
Serena held her breath, did they do it? Did they win? The screen was too high up for her to properly see the result so it's a mystery. Seeing Solidad walk out into the middle of the field, greeting her two Pokémon, she decided to do the same, as Lilian charged onto the stage in her usual energetic entrance.
"With our final battle over, our judges shall join our two finalist on stage!" Lilian announced.
She reached Delphox and Larvitar, kneeling down to pick up the little rock type who gave her the biggest hug he could muster before she stood up and thanked Delphox, even if they didn't win, she couldn't have asked more from these two. Especially Larvitar, he has truly came out of his shell.
"Thank you Serena, that was a great battle," Solidad thanked, as she stood next to her.
"Same Solidad," Serena replied.
Next thing she knew, all three judges were lined up next to Lilian and Serena turned to line up next to Solidad, Delphox getting into line with Solidad's two Pokémon before Mr Contesta stepped forward, microphone in hand.
"Firstly, I would like to thank these two talented coordinators for giving us a grand show in the final contest before the Grand Festival," he praised, as the crowd gave one loud cheer. He left it a minute or so before raising the microphone once more, signalling the audience to quieten down, "now if you look at the results screen, you'll see our victor is Solidad."
What?! Serena's felt like it stopped as her eyes opened. This is it; her Johto-contest journey is over. She almost lost grip of Larvitar as the reality of the result sink in, she could really focus on anything said but she felt a small tug on her hand. Looking down, it was her Rock Skin Pokémon who pointed to Mr Contesta, so she forced herself to focus once more.
"But as she already has five ribbons on hand and because of Serena's inspired appeals performance and the fact the points are only single digits out from each other, we are awarding this final ribbon to Serena Yvonne from Pallet Town," Mr contest continued.
"Err," Serena blinked, unsure how to react.
Feeling a pat on her back, curtsy of Delphox, she stumbled forward before straightening herself out in front of Mr Contesta who held a small ribbon in his hand. It was a black ribbon around the edge with white lining to accompany it, finishing off with a golden pin in the centre.
"Thank you," she managed to say, as she took the ribbon in hand.
She held it out before staring at it, she actually did it, she got the final ribbon. The crowd cheered as she lost herself in the fifth ribbon. She has all five ribbons, no, not just her. Her and her team, they deserve the credit and because of them, they can compete in the grand festival.
"You've earnt this dear, after your inspired appeals performance today, all of us here today wished to see what you would do for the Grand Festivals performance round," Mr Contest smiled, "congratulations, we all look forward to what you have to show in the Grand Festival."
She looked back at him with her eyebrow flustering around into a series of confused looks. She has done plenty of appeals performances over her journey and while this one possibly received the most praise, why would they be interested in seeing that imparticular? The head of the contest committee must've heard her silent question as he smiled before raising the microphone once more.
"You see, the grand Festival will have two options for coordinators to do their appeals performance," Mr Contesta continued, addressing both Serena and the audience, "either a double performance as shown here today or a triple performance inspired by the free-style rounds of Showcases which originated in the Kalos region and have been spreading out as of recently. We will also be having a special judge from the Showcase board but for now, all other details about the Grand Festival will be announced at a later point."
Serena took a deep breath as the crowd cheered once more. She saw Mr Contesta return to the other judges, who all turned to make their way off stage. A quick glance back showed Solidad had already recalled her two Pokémon and was making their way off stage. Not wanting to overstay her welcome, she turned on her heel and followed swiftly behind, Larvitar in hand and Delphox shortly behind. While the Rock Skin Pokémon was definitely heavy, her excitement overcame any sort of tiredness.
It didn't take them long to get out of sight of the audience and the distant echo of Lilian closing the contest sounded but Serena couldn't bring herself to focus on what she said. Instead, she kneeled down and let Larvitar down before standing back up and them making their way over the waiting room. Once she got there, it was mostly empty, only a few workers still around, not even Solidad stayed. She quickly located her bag and approached it.
Once there, she pulled out the rest of her Pokeballs, releasing: Jumpluff, Cyndaquil and Kangashkan. Unfortunately, Hitmontop is still with Ash so she'll need to show him later as well as find out what he thought about contests. She already knows he won't do the appeals performance but maybe he'd like the battle rounds.
"Hey guys, check it out!" she smiled, reaching into her bag before pulling out her ribbon case. She popped it open before placing the ribbon she just received in the final slot for it to be. Smiling at the sight for a moment, she turned it around before showing her team, "we have all five ribbons. We are going to the grand festival."
Her team cheered for her, Roo jumping out of Kangashkan's pouch to join Larvitar in a sort of happy dance, along with Cyndaquil, as Jumpluff shot into the air and floated around her, a trail of sparkles trickling out behind her. She can only imagine how her other Pokémon at the lab will react, and if she's right they probably already know as they tend to watch them whenever something they do is on the television but still, it's exciting to think about.
Not to mention, her having to looking into these Showcases more to get an idea for the appeals performance.
"Okay guys, let's get ready to leave," she told her team, "I'm sure the others will be wondering where we got to and both Delphox and Larvitar deserve a nice rest after today."
They all agreed, and one by one Serena started recalling them but Larvitar made it clear he wanted to stay out and walk alongside her. Not having a reason not to, she smiled before checking she had everything in hand and setting off, Larvitar slightly ahead but still close by.
Serena watched as Larvitar rode on top of the trolly along with her other Pokeballs containing who was used today, being pushed by a Chansey. He wanted to stay outside of his for his check up and she really didn't mind. Everyone has a preference. She smiled as he waved her bye, disappearing into a set of double doors.
Sighing once they were out of sight, Serena let herself relax. After all this time, she finally has all the ribbons needed for the grand festival, but should she even be allowed to compete? Sure, the judges explained it back at the reward ceremony, but it doesn't feel like she really won. She didn't actually win the contest after all and not to mention she will have tough competition against those who have won all five ribbons like Miette, Marina, Solidad... Amelia.
Turning around, she began to walk away from the desk, taking a glance out of the window. She saw Solidad outside on one of the back battlefields with her Pidgeot out, looking as if preparing to fly. Not wanting to end it like this, she ran out back.
"Solidad! Solidad!" Serena called out.
The female coordinator turned around from her large flying type, smiling at Serena as she came to a stop just in front of her. Serena felt slightly silly for running after her since she is going to meet her at the grand festival after all.
"Hey Serena, did you want something?" Solidad asked, "I was just going to set off with Pidgeot to get ready for the grand festival."
"Wait, you know where it's going to be held?" Serena asked, "I thought that they were revealing it in a few days."
"Officially they will," Solidad replied, "but Johto always holds it in the same place. I figured flying over there will be quickest so I can have as much prep time as possible."
"So where is it?" Serena asked, "if you don't mind."
"Not at all," she smiled, "it'll be held in Goldenrod city. The heart of Johto. But I'm not sure about the actual date, probably two or three weeks from today."
Serena smiled as she heard that, they should be able to easily make it on time travelling by foot but even if they don't they have more than enough large flying types between them to fly, especially now that Ash's Dragonair evolved. Of course, first they have Brock's breeders contest and Ash's gym battle but that still leaves them plenty of time to get there.
"I guess I'll be seeing you there, Serena," Solidad smiled.
"I guess so," Serena replied.
She lowered her head, watching her feet shuffle around on the spot. Whether she agreed or not, she doesn't really have a choice about not using this ribbon since their isn't any more contests being held. Sure, she could just say she didn't want to compete but that would be punishing her team after how hard they worked.
"Cheer up, Serena, you've earnt your position in the grand festival," Solidad smiled, "if our battle earlier today was any longer than I'm not so sure that I would've won, you have a strong natural talent for contests and out of everyone I've competed against in Johto, I'm sure you'll be my biggest obstacle."
Serena looked up, shocked at what this women who already was a top coordinator was saying about her and her ability of contests. Sure, she won a few contests in Johto and had kind of a head start by studying and preparing during their Orange Islands travels but to say she would be her toughest competition?! What?!
"Of course, that means I'll need to be extra prepared as I don't plan on losing easily," Solidad smirked morphed into a smirk.
"Hey Solidad," Serena replied, "can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead," Solidad smiled.
"Why are you still competing in contests?" Serena asked, "if you already won a grand festival, I mean."
Solidad smile grew as she closed her eyes, she turned to the side before looking high up into the sky. Looking in the same direction, Serena couldn't really make anything out, just a few clouds covering the sunny blue sky.
"It's because I love the contest stage, the combination of both the beauty in performing and battling," Solidad replied, "I want to become the best of the best when it comes to contests. Any coordinator could win a grand festival, I've already won one of them, but I want to take the next step. I want to become one of few contest masters."
"Contest master?" Serena questioned.
She can remember hearing the phrasing back at the Wallace cup in relation to Wallace but never really looked further into it, she wasn't in a great place after what happened at that contest, after all. Forcing her mind back from that situation, she refocused on the elder coordinator.
"A contest master is a coordinator who has won five different regional grand festivals. They are considered the best of the best in the contest world and only a few are known publicly," Solidad explained, "probably the only ones you've heard of are Wallace and Mr Contesta. Then every ten years or so, all top coordinators are allowed to compete to find the master of masters."
"You want to become the master of masters in the contest circuit?" Serena asked.
"It would be nice, don't get me wrong," Solidad smiled, "but there has only ever been one since the contest circuit began, that being Mr Contesta. I'd be happy achieving the master coordinator status and taking on a job high up in the circuit or as a teacher. I know I can do it so now I just need to prove it."
Serena couldn't help but smile as she heard that story. She would love to win the Grand Festival just as much as the next coordinator but from the sounds of it, Solidad has a much deeper desire. Honestly, she isn't even sure if she wants to continue doing contests after Johto, they have been fun, but they aren't quite the same spark that she sees Ash have during battles or even what Solidad has on the contest stage.
Before she could say anything else, she watched Solidad return to her large normal flying type. She climbed onto the back of her Pidgeot who turned on the spot and spread her wings, clearly preparing to take off.
"Like I said, Serena, I look forward to seeing you at the Grand Festival," Solidad smiled, "and I want you to come at me with everything you have. It would make any sort of victory feel empty if you didn't and I really wouldn't want it. I'm sure you wouldn't either in my position."
Serena smiled and nodded before the Pidgeot flapped her wings, taking off into the sky. She watched the older coordinator as she disappeared into the sky, getting smaller and smaller until completely out of sight.
