Author's Note:

Here it is, a Brock focused chapter with a little Ash side story before his gym battle. As the title suggests, I'm sure you can guess what's gonna happen and I want to point out, I have planned what happened between him and Professor Ivy from the very beginning. Oh, and we get the last capture for a main character in the Johto series, it really shouldn't be a surprise who it is. Also, I am introducing Suzy's rival from the anime, but he won't have a massive role in the series, and I did change his main Pokémon simply because it'll be confusing have Suzy's and Brock's Ninetales and his own. I might also cut over most of the actual competition but that's because it isn't really the focus of the chapter. Not much else to say other than stay safe with everything going on so let's get started. Don't forget to vote in the poll, it's a new one about your favourite pairing in the series (not counting Amour because that's an obvious winner). With that, let's begin...

Chapter 71: Brock's Heartbreak

Brock smiled to himself as he looked into the mirror of the bathroom. He woke up early and took a refreshing shower. A smirk appeared on his lips as he remembered the reason he woke up early. Today is the day he gets to reunite with Suzy.

He already called Ninetales over so she can see her again and while he agreed to compete in the breeders competition that she's judging, he knew it wouldn't be fair to use Ninetales considering her biased towards the fire fox. Plus, she'll likely want to spend as much time with Ninetales as possible but after the competition, regardless of the outcome, he'll finally ask her to go official. Sure, she might've turned him down before but that was because they only just met and with how often they talk on the phone and the like, there's no way she doesn't feel the same.

Shaking his head from that thought, the smile disappeared from his face as he remembered the last time he went to ask someone to go official... Professor Ivy. He never really opened up about what happened between them, not even to his friends. Honestly, he felt like he might never be able to come to terms with it.

Grabbing a can from the sink, he sprayed some foam into his hands before rubbing them together. Once both hands were properly covered, he rubbed the foam onto his lower face, using the mirror to see he covered all areas. Turning on the hot tap in the sink, he washed the remaining foam from his hands before grabbing the razor. He ran it under the crystal clear water before lightly tapping it on the side of the sink. Raising the razor up, he began to shave.

A proper wet shave is the best there is, sure it may take longer but it gives you a refreshing and revitalised feeling that one doesn't get from an electric razor. He'll probably have to show Ash how to shave soon, after all Serena probably wouldn't like him with a beard or anything and he's too young to pull it off anyway. Of course, if his plan with Suzy goes off then he might only have a short time left in the group before joining her on their own journey.

It didn't take him long to finish shaving before grabbing a small hand-towel to wipe the remaining foam of his face. He looked in the mirror, turning his head around to check her got ever bit before smiling, washing the razor under the water before placing it back down on the sink side. Turning the tap off, he made his way back into the bedroom, where his outfit was already laid out. It was his regular travelling outfit, freshly washed in the centre's laundry room. It didn't take him long to get dressed.

Once ready, he glanced at the clock, he still had over an hour before he was due to meet his friends for breakfast. With that in mind, he reached for the selection of Pokeballs on his bedside table, taking a seat on the neatly made bed, as he already made it once fully awake. With one Pokeball in hand, he pressed the button and in a flash of light his pure fire fox appeared in all her glory. She would probably do great in a contest come to think of it, with her natural beauty and all.

"Hey girl," he greeted.

She opened her mouth and let out a greetings cry before standing up and carefully stepping towards him, before rubbing her head against his hand, purring in content as she took a seat between his legs. Encouraging him to fuss her a little.

"Your excited to see Suzy again too," he smiled, "not that I'm surprised. But before that, we have to get you looking your best."

Brock couldn't help but chuckle to himself at the sideward glance he received from Ninetales, as she looked up at him. Leaning to the side, he reached into his backpack before pulling out a brush. Most of his Pokémon share the same equipment when it comes to grooming but Ninetales has her own special set, a set received from Suzy when he took her on.

"Yes, you always look your best, but you know what I mean," Brock replied as he placed the brush on top of her head and stroking it down her back, "but you know what I mean. Can't have Suzy thinking I let you fall behind or anything like that."

The way Ninetales purred showed she agreed with his assessment, so Brock smiled at her before continuing to brush her fur. When she returned to him from his family in Pewter, her fur was a little rough since she point blank refuses to let anyone other than Brock or Suzy to brush her or do anything really but after a long day of pampering, she was back to her pristine condition.

As Brock continued to groom her fur into the sheen style that Ninetales loves, his mind went back to his last day on Valencia island-

Brock was over a hot stove, mixing together a sauce in a pan as the cook slowly roasted the joint he was preparing. Today was the day, he was creating a nice romantic meal for himself and Philena. It was the day he was going to proposal that they go official. It's been a few months since he left his friends to live here with the Professor and her assistances. He really meant what he said way back then, that he wanted to help improve these girls lives since they were falling behind but during that time his feelings for Philena went from pure infatuation to something special, the likes of which he never felt for anyone else.

"After defeating the Orange League champion, Ash not only receives the Orange League winner's trophy but also goes down in the Pumelo Hall of Fame." The announcer explained.

He couldn't help but smile as he heard that, he told the girls that he wanted some privacy so he could cheer his friend on in the championship battle. Of course, they agreed which allowed him to prepare this special meal, but it was also true. He wouldn't miss out on supporting his little bro, even if not there in person. He's had the match on whilst cooking and it has truly been an amazing battle, it's hard to believe that this is same kid who came to his gym over a year ago. He sure is growing up into a fine trainer.

Maybe once they go official, he and Philena could visit Pallet to congratulate him on his success, he will always be a lifelong friend and same with Misty and Serena. Even if they don't travel together, he'll keep up to date on all their successes. For a long time, they were his family after all.

Smiling to himself as he remembered the good times whilst travelling around Kanto, his eyes wondered over the shelve in front of the television which was decorated in photographs. He found them stored away when cleaning out a cupboard shortly after moving in, it was mostly of the triplets since Philena didn't enjoy having her photo being taken but there was another female in the photos. She looked around the same age of the triplets, but with long blue hair and dressed in some sort of ranger gear. He learnt that her name was Solana but not much else since it was awkward to ask about her. From what he inferred, she was likely another adopted daughter of Philena's but instead of following in her researching footsteps, left to enrol in the Ranger's academy.

Maybe he should look into tracking her down so he could meet the last of his adoptive children, after all if Philena says yes then he will be taking the children on as his own, not like that's an issue. He loves looking after those younger who can't care for himself, he is like the universal big brother. Turning his attention back to the meal, a little more time passed when he heard a knock at the door. He turned the sauce onto a low simmer before leaving to answer.

"Oh, hey Hope, did you forget something?" he greeted with a warm smile.

"Hehehe, yeah actually," she nervously chuckled, "the stop watch to time the time it takes the Vileplume to-"

She stopped in her tracks as her eyes lowered into a daze, massive whiffs of air pumping through her enlarged nostrils as a small drip of drool appeared at the corner of her mouth. Brock knew she must've smelt the meal he was cooking. Not having any way to hide it, he invited her inside instead.

"What smells so good?" she asked.

"Well, I wanted it to be a surprise but since your here I'll tell you," Brock admitted, "I'm cooking a special meal, for your mother."

"Wait, when did you hear about that?" Hope asked.

"Hear about what?" Brock asked, his eyebrow wriggling into a scowl of confusion.

"Hear that our mum is returning, she only sent us the email yesterday," Hope replied, "and I'm sure she'll love your cooking but-"

Brock didn't hear the next bit as his mind began trying to process this information. Their mother is returning but the Professor hasn't gone anywhere. It must be there birth mother considering their adopted but how, last he heard they never had any contact with either of their biological parents.

"Brock? Hello Brock," a hand waved in front of his face, snapping him out of his trance.

"Huh, sorry, what was you saying?" he apologised.

"That its great news Solana is returning, and she'll love your cooking just as much as the rest of us," Hope replied.

"Solana," he repeated, his eyes drifting over to the photos on the side.

"Yeah, those images are when mum and the Professor were younger, even if the Professor doesn't like having her picture taken," Hope replied, "it's funny thinking about it because we called Solana mum and the Professor, Professor so they didn't get confused but both were fine with us using their real names instead. And yet with Solana off doing her ranger missions we only see her every few months but-"

Brock had completely zoned out at this revelation, Professor Ivy, Philena, is married already and her partner is returning. As if that wasn't bad enough, it was to a Pokémon ranger. Maybe if it was some deadbeat who just abandoned them and wanted another chance then he might've stood a chance, but he couldn't break up this family no matter how much he loved Philena.

He felt the colour drain from his face as a tingling numbness appeared at the end of his limbs. His once thumbing heart came to a stop to the point where Brock couldn't feel it bashing across his chest. His eyes blinking a few times as a familiar wetness filled them. His nose, despite seconds previously being filled with the special dinner he planned for himself and Philena, now held nothing. His ears, they had long since listening to Hope's explanation about her two adoptive mothers. The only sense he had left was his sight which was watching the young girl who had turned around as she spoke but based on her danced feet, she was about to turn back to face him.

Clearing his face of any distress before Hope noticed and started asking difficult questions, Brock grabbed the stopwatch from the kitchen counter and suggested she make her way back before they miss out on what experiment they were doing. Once she was out, he came up with his plan. He'd leave the meal for Philena and the girls so it didn't go to waste and write Philena a note, leaving it somewhere only she would find it. It wouldn't be fair if he just abandoned them but at the same time, his shattered heart couldn't bare seeing her face to face. Grabbing a blank piece of paper from the printer, he wrote:

Dear Professor Ivy

Hope told me your wife, Solana is returning from duty and that's great. I'm sure you'll enjoy the time together before she is deployed again. As a parting gift, I've left this meal for you and the girls, but I will already be gone by the time you've read this. I am going back to meet my friends and continue on our journey. Make sure the triplets know that, I would hate for them to think I left because of them or something but, I can't stay, not with Solana returning because... well because, you don't need me, the house is clean, you know how to cook, and you'll have your wife and honestly... I couldn't stand seeing you together because I love you. I don't want to make you feel awkward or anything, but I couldn't not tell you, so I'm sorry. This is goodbye forever, Brock.

Once the meal was prepared, he set the table, knowing the four would be on their way back. He couldn't stop the tears streaming down his face as he left everything ready for the girls before heading up to his room to pack his stuff, wanting to run as far away as possible. He didn't even know if Ash and the others would want him back, but he couldn't stay here-

"Nine?" his fire fox spoke, which snapped him back to the room in the Pokémon centre.

"Huh?" Brock blinked in response, his white knuckles and her rough fur was enough to show that he must've been brushing a little too hard, guess he let his mind run away for a bit, "sorry girl. I was just thinking about something. We'll get you fixed right away."

She seemed to accept that, and Brock loosened his grip on the brush before calmly going back over her roughed up patches. After a few more minutes, the pure fire type let out another cry in a questioning tone. He already knew she was asking what he was thinking about, as if it wasn't obvious. Philena was the only person he had truly loved, well until Suzy. Ninetales never liked her and she wasn't afraid to let him know it but that is in the past.

Now he can focus on Suzy, who Ninetales fully supports as does the rest of his team. After today they will get a happily ever after.

After he finished preparing Ninetales for their reunion and talking with Stantler about the plan for today's contest, he went downstairs to join his friends for breakfast. He had to return his normal type who has trouble walking on stairs but once he located them at an outside table, he released his entire team. Luckily the others already laid out the Pokémon food for everyone, so he collected his modest stack of pancakes before joining his friends at the table.

"So Brock," Misty greeted, as she swallowed a bite of her own meal, "are you ready for today's competition? I know you haven't done anything like it before."

"I am Misty but to be honest, I'm not bothered by the results or anything, I'm only competing because Suzy asked me too," Brock replied, "I wanted to become a breeder to help Pokémon, not for recognition or anything like that."

"Even if you didn't take on being a breeder for recognition, you do deserve it Brock," Serena added, "you know Pokémon better than anyone. Even our youngest or wildest Pokémon at least respect you if not more."

"That's kind Serena and I didn't mean to imply recognition is bad by any means," Brock smiled, "I'm just more nervous about reuniting with Suzy actually."

"How come?" Serena asked.

"Well," Brock sighed, not sure if he should admit this to his friends. They will probably think he's resorting back to his previous overzealous self or something, but can he truly keep it secret? After all, when they start dating he'll probably only be travelling together until the end of Johto if that, "it's because I'm going to ask her out or well, to make us official."

"You're asking her if she'll be your girlfriend?" Ash clarified.

"Sure am," Brock smiled, although that quickly faded as he felt a wave of eyes staring at him. Only Ninetales really knew about this so now he had not only his human friends but also most of his team looking at him along with a lot of his friend's Pokémon.

"Are you sure that's a good idea, Brock?" Misty asked.

He sighed, he truly hoped that they would understand and support his decision, but he wasn't naive or stupid. He knew they have been sceptical about his relationship with Suzy but that's mostly because they haven't really met her, only a few instances when they physically met up. They weren't there during their first meeting near Fuchsia city or even their romantic day out in Goldenrod.

"I am, Misty," he replied, forcing his lips up into a bright smile as his back shot up in his seat. He was trying as hard as possible to show that he was serious and truly believed it but as his eyes darted around all those staring at him, he slouched slightly.

"Well, good luck Brock," Serena offered a smile as her hand reached for his shoulder, "she's lucky to be given the opportunity. You're really great."

"Thanks Serena," Brock replied.

They continued to eat their breakfast before what felt like an uncomfortable silence surrounded them. Even though he felt those numerous eyes on him dwindle down to none, he hated this feeling like he was guilty of something and waiting for his punishment. He quickly finished his breakfast before he decided to speak again.

"Can you guys do me a favour?" he asked.

"Sure Brock," Misty replied as the others nodded in agreement.

"Would you not come to the competition?" Brock requested.

"How come?" Serena asked, her expression showing she was shocked by the request.

"Like I said, I'm not bothered about the result of the competition, but I can't help but feel like having you there would put me off," Brock replied, "and I would hate for you to think I don't care or appreciate your support but-"

"It's okay, Brock, I get what you mean," Misty admitted, "it's easy to perform for strangers than it is for those you know, especially since you'll likely never meet all or most of them face to face. I guess we could make ourselves busy whilst you and Suzy have your alone time."

"I could always use more practise ready for our next gym battle," Ash added.

"And I need to start getting everyone ready for the grand festival," Serena nodded in agreement.

Brock smiled in response, happy that they weren't upset by his request. After all, Ash never asked them to miss one of his gym battles or even league battles and likewise, Serena never asked them to ignore her contest or chateau challenge back in Kanto.

"Thank you," he replied.

After bidding his friends goodbye, Brock made his way over to where the competition was being held. Ninetales was walking alongside him but he returned his other five Pokémon. As he approached the area, it was an open stage with rows of chairs on a grassy plain. It heavily resembled the Cherrygrove contest hall.

There were many breeders around the place each with different Pokémon. Having looked into how the competition would work, each breeder can use one Pokémon for the two rounds. The first round would the breeders technique which they demonstrate on the stage before the second round which has them parade the Pokémon around which is judged by their health, posture, strength and how well they have been raised. Of course, Suzy is one of the judges, but she won't be the only one.

"Nine!" the fire fox hollered, darting off towards the stage but going around the side instead of on top.

Brock was quick to react, running after her, she must've heard something familiar. As he came around the back of the stage he saw the pure fire type with the person of his affection. Suzy was on her knees as Ninetales had her paws helping her reach up to lick her original trainer as Suzy laughed in joy. It was rare to see Ninetales so openly affectionate, always preferring to be the receiver but if she would be that with anyone then it would be her pseudo sister.

Feeling his heart stop, his palms became damp with sweat. His foot took an unwilling step back as his eyes locked onto the breeding beauty. His mind was telling him, yelling at him to go up and say hello but his feet uncomplying. As he was frozen in place, he couldn't help but notice another male approach behind her, he had medium length golden hair and a designer orange jacket but the main thing which drew his attention was a large sheen Arcanine stood beside him.

"So your Ninetales is here and she's evolved, so beautiful" he smiled, clearly addressing Suzy who turned to look at him before standing up, "I thought Arcanine was going to be lonely."

"She always was beautiful, Zane," Suzy shot back, "and in case you missed it last time, neither Vulpix or myself is interested."

"Well we'll need to see about that after the competition," he replied, flicking his hair, "come on Arcanine. We have to finish getting ready."

With him gone, Suzy sighed, her posture relaxing before she turned to the side. Brock, who had relaxed slightly, shot straight back up like a board as she turned to look at him. A small pleasant smile over her lips. She began to walk towards him, Ninetales close by her feet. His heart thumbing with each step she took.

"Hello Brock, thank you for bringing Ninetales again," Suzy greeted, "and sorry about Zane. He's an old friend of mine but as we grew older we had completely different opinions on what breeders should focus on. I wasn't expecting him to be competing as well."

"H-hi Su-u-zy," Brock stuttered before taking a deep breath to calm his nervous, "it was my pleasure to bring Ninetales. She is your Pokémon after all, I've just been looking after her."

"And a wonderful job you've done too, Brock," Suzy smiled, "I couldn't have done a better job myself. I knew I made the right decision in asking you."

"If you don't mind my asking, Suzy, why did you ask me?" Brock asked.

"It's a personal reason, Brock, I'll tell you but after the contest, okay?" Suzy replied.

Brock's head nodded in agreement as his mind began racing at a million miles as one thought came to his head. If it's a personal reason, it must have something to do with a more personal relationship. She must've used Ninetales to help her judge out a possible partner and is also planning to confess.

"Although I am glad you agreed to compete, I know it's not your normal forte," Suzy continued.

"H-how come?" Brock asked, snapping his mind back into reality.

"Well, it's because of Zane," Suzy replied, "he would never accept that Ninetales, or rather back when she was a Vulpix, was interested in his Growlithe."

"I'm guessing that's the Arcanine he had with him, before he evolved," Brock deduced.

"Right," Suzy agreed, "anyway, Zane always believed that the most important aspect of a Pokémon is the outside. How they look but I've always preferred the inner beauty and while of course, Ninetales here is beautiful on both inside and out, I can't stand his single minded view point. He seems to think that because Ninetales and his Arcanine are both beautiful on the outside that they should be together although Vulpix never showed any interest."

"Nine!" the pure fire type barked in agreement.

"I know it's a lot to ask, Brock but I've seen you bring out the inner beauty in many Pokémon most wouldn't consider beautiful," Suzy continued, "so could you help me show Zane that true beauty comes from within?"

"Of course," Brock agreed, without hesitation, "I've registrared Stantler to compete but if you'd prefer I could ask if I could change to Steelix, or Delibird or -"

"No, of course not Brock, Stantler will be fine," Suzy lightly chuckled, "I know any Pokémon you brought would be beautiful and could fulfil this role expertly."

"Hehehe," Brock chuckled nervously at the compliment as he felt his face heat up.

"Now sorry for the abrupt end but we need to finish putting everything together and they need the back stage cleared from competitors," Suzy apologised.

"O-of course," Brock nodded in understand, quickly making his leave.

He glanced back at her as he returned the way he came from, tripping over his own feet as he made his escape. He was able to catch himself before falling over completely but looking back, he saw Suzy giggling as her hand covered her mouth in an attempt to conceal it. Brock felt his face burst into flames as he scurried to get out of sight.

Brock smiled as he looked down at Stantler. He just competed in the first round of the competition, showing off his gentle but firm brushing technique to help reassure even the most timid of Pokémon. Of course, Stantler isn't nearly as shy as she use to be, but it still worked since she hid her face in his chest for the first part of the demonstration, even if happy to compete, she isn't the most open or welcoming of strangers.

He reached into his pocket before pulling out a can of normal type Pokémon food. Unfortunately, he didn't have a bowl readily available for Stantler to use but he offered it anyway. The normal type smiled and let out a small cry of gratitude before digging into the food as Brock held it in his hand.

"Hehehe, glad you like it," Brock chuckled in response, "but slow down. You don't want to get a stomach ache or anything."

His normal type did just that, slowing down to a more leisurely pace. Brock watched her with a small smile, they did very well in the first round, scoring a solid 26 points out of thirty. Each of the three judges can score up to ten in each round and the winner is the one with the most of sixty. If it comes down to a draw then they have to discuss it among themselves. Suzy gave him a full ten, but the other judges weren't as generous. One of the judges he thinks is related to Jimmy since he goes by Mr Gold and that's Jimmy's last name, while the final one was more of a fashion-icon who praised more of the outer appearance.

"Letting the star eat during an intermission is just asking for trouble," a familiar voice snarked.

"Oh, it's you," Brock sighed as he looked up to see Zane stood over him, his Arcanine stood to attention just behind, "Zane correct?"

"Correct," he replied, "and you're the breeder who Suzy trusted her Ninetales with."

"Not to sound rude but do you want something?" Brock asked, having felt the nervousness of Stantler radiating from her, physically being displayed by her stiff legs and her ending with her meal despite having more than half of it left. Not surprising considering the large predatory stood behind her. The Arcanine is in top condition.

"I like to keep an eye on my competition," Zane replied, "you did receive the second highest points in round one... behind myself, naturally. Not to mention you seem to be my biggest competitor with Suzy, not like I'm scared."

"Huh?" Brock's head turned straight towards him as he gave the competitor his full attention. A smirk formed on Zane's lips.

"Why would I be scared?" he asked, rhetorically, turning to the side as his eyes closed and he looked towards the ceiling, "I mean, we've already been on a date. She even got you to baby little Vulpix so she could give me her full attention."

Brock felt his lower jaw drop open as the blonde breeder strode off, his Arcanine following right behind. He clenched his fist as he watched the arrogant man disappear within the crowd. While he wanted to believe he was just trying to get him under his skin, a nagging voice in the back of his head which he first felt after Valencia island echoed. Could he have really had a previous relationship with Suzy? If what he said was true, it would have to be recent since it would've been when Ninetales was with him.

He felt something fuzzy against his cheek. Blinking, he looked around to see Stantler nudging his head with her own. Not surprising, she seems to have a way with understanding others feelings. Maybe it's a secret of the species, after all the female Stantler's have better control over the illusions so they could be pseudo-psychic or something. Since they don't go near many humans, they haven't been researched much and thus have very little information known about them.

"Thanks Stantler," he let out a small smile. His normal type gave a small cry in response, one filled with enthusiasm. While Brock could never say how she seems him exactly, he likes to think he took on a big brother role for her. He knew he could never replace her parents, but they sure have grown close over their Johto journey.

"Could Brock Harrison and Stantler please report to one of the workers for their second round performance!" a voice called out.

Brock sighed as he re-sealed the can of Pokémon food before placing it in his bag. He shook his head before standing up and turning towards his normal type. She looked in a fine condition, especially considering his first round was showing off his brushing technique but there were some crumbs around her mouth. He chuckled mostly to himself as he took a cloth out of his pocket before wiping her mouth.

"Okay Stantler, you ready for this?" he asked, putting the cloth away.

His female friend nodded, and he smiled, turning around to locate one of the stage workers, he began to make his way over as Stantler followed right by his side. As they walked, Zane's taunting echoed in his mind once more... No! He can't let him get to him, if nothing else he owes Suzy his best effort in this final round and then, after the show he can find out the truth and also confess his own feelings towards her.

Zane must've just tried getting under his skin.

Ash smiled as he watched his team, it was the team he planned to use against Clair when she returned from her mountain adventure. Each paired up to prepare them for a tough battle that has been promised. Pikachu was sparring with Venusaur, using his speed to avoid the numerous vines which attempted to whack him away. Lapras was launching Ice Beams into the sky, as Togetic used his flying manuvers-ability to avoid them and finally, his two power houses, Dragonite and Snorlax were locked in a hand to hand combat of strength.

He's been swapping them around so they each get to work on different areas, like when Togetic sparred with Snorlax to work on noticing the weak points of a superior opponent. As he watched them train, he couldn't help but feel like he this would be one great battle.

Invigorated by the sight, he unzipped his jacket before tossing it over by his bag which was against the tree. Dropping onto the floor, he began doing push ups. For most of his journey he has trained himself alongside his Pokémon, but he took a break after the lake. He pushed up and down, not especially fast but a medium pace to allow it to stretch his muscles. Up, down, up, down, up-

"Oh, it's you!" he heard Pikachu call out.

Having his attention drawn, Ash stopped his own work out before jumping to his feet. He was slightly out of breath, but it didn't stop him from looking over towards his starter which had ceased his sparring with Venusaur. Both Pokémon had their backs to him and appeared to be talking with someone, but his grass poison blocked who it was. He quickly approached them, as their voice came more into his hearing range.

"So you're the Snubbull I've told about, pleasure to meet you," Venusaur greeted.

Just as he said, a small familiar pink Pokémon was in front of him, shaking one of his vines with her stubby little arms. It was quite amusing seeing how small she looked in comparison

"So I guess since your here, your previous trainer didn't change," Pikachu added.

"Nope, she is still as stuck up as ever, so I want a new trainer," Snubbull replied before she looked Ash right in the air, pointing one of her arms at him, "that one."

Ash was a little surprise that she saw him but then again, he was taller than Venusaur even if not

"So you're the same Snubbull as before?" Ash asked.

"I am," Snubbull answered, "are you the same Ash I met before?"

"You'll find there's only one of him," Pikachu replied, "thank the legends."

"Well the one I met with a Marowak proved otherwise," Snubbull pouted.

"Oh, you must've met his twin brother, Drake," Venusaur pointed out, "I must say, your quite the amusing little one."

"And your quite the big, little one," Snubbull replied, "so are you going to catch me?"

"Hang on a moment, Snubbull," Ash replied, kneeling down to her level, "I already told you I can't catch you if you have a trainer."

"But I don't, you said if the prison broke then I was wild," Snubbull gestured to herself, "well I am a wild Pokémon."

"Prison?" Venusaur questioned.

"Her Pokeball with her previous trainer," Ash clarified, before turning back to her, "are you saying you broke your Pokeball?"

"I'm going to say gravity did," Snubbull replied, "and a rock."

"I like her style," Pikachu quipped.

"So can you capture me now?" Snubbull asked.

"Snubbull... I don't like doing this, I still think your previous trainer deserves another chance," Ash sighed, knowing how hard it was for him to lose one of his Pokémon.

"At which point do I deserve the second chance then?" Snubbull asked, "she never changes. And never will. My whole life I've been a prisoner to her, and you are my chance to escape, properly escape and live the life I want. When do I deserve a chance to be happy?"

She jumped from her spot and tackled Ash in the chest. Not quite knocking him over but began crying into his black shirt as she tugged on it with her stubby little arms. He used his hands to support her, sitting on the ground to help with balance. As he looked around he saw Dragonite, Snorlax and Togetic approaching them.

"Oh Snubbull," Ash replied as he gave her hug to give some comfort.

"I know your upset about losing Gyarados, but this isn't the same thing as that, Ash," Pikachu pointed out.

As he comforted the small fairy type, he knew that his starter was right. Gyarados was taken from him out of both of their control but Snubbull ran away, unhappy with her previous trainer. Of course, if any of his Pokémon wished to leave he would let them without question but not everyone is as considerate as that. Even if he believes everyone deserves another chance, it shouldn't be at the cost of someone else's happiness.

"Okay Snubbull, if you really want to then I'll catch you," Ash replied.

"Yay!" she cheered, leaping up to lick his face. Ash chuckled as his hands flew behind him to stop himself from being knocked over. He laughed at the tickling feeling before it suddenly stopped as she jumped down from him, "so this is the bit where we battle?"

"You want to battle?" Ash asked.

"Of course, that's how most trainers catch their Pokémon right?" Snubbull asked, as she scrapped her foot against the ground.

"Well, yes," Ash replied, a little thrown off by her eagerness.

"I've learnt some new tricks whilst tracking you," Snubbull growled.

"That's great Snubbull but before we start, a couple things," Ash replied, "first, do you have a preferred Pokeball you want? I don't have a big selection but-"

"The basic one," Snubbull cut him off, "the one which is red on top and white on bottom. I don't want one of those icky fancy ones or anything."

"Okay, I've a few of them so that's fine," Ash replied, "but the team I have at the moment is my team for the next gym battle. So if I catch you, then you'll be sent to a lab where the rest of my Pokémon stay when not with me. I don't want you to be scared or thought I abandoned you or anything, but I can only have six Pokémon with me at a time."

"Okay, that will be nice. A place to rest my paws after the journey," Snubbull nodded in understanding, "so can we battle now?"

"Sure," Ash smiled before looking around towards his team, "Togetic, do you want to take this one?"

The happiness Pokémon swooped from behind Dragonite in front of Ash, his bright face showing clear excitement at the prospect of battling against this new opponent, of course it's because Togetic is the closest one to Snubbull's level out of his current line-up. Plus, both being fairy types makes it fair.

His other Pokémon cleared out a makeshift field as Togetic took up a battle stance against the ground-bound fairy type. Despite both Pokémon seeming to be very friendly and happy, there was a clear tension as they awaited the battle to begin.

"and start!" Pikachu shouted, clearly deciding to be the referee for the match.

Togetic verses Snubbull:

Ash smirked as he watched the battle start, Snubbull launched from her position, mouth open as she attempted to land a Bite attack. Even if dark moves won't do much to a fellow fairy type, he remembers Snubbull claiming that Bite was her strongest move and her only move for a while, so it made sense.

Togetic fluttered higher, as Snubbull swooped underneath him, landing on all four, she turned back towards him.

Snubbull crouched low before pushing off with even more force. She rocketed upwards as Togetic struggled to flutter out of the way of her Headbutt.

The pure fairy type shot past him but as she came to a stop mid-air, turned around and opened her mouth, clearly going to land a Bite on the way down.

Togetic's smirk showed he already had a plan. Stopping directly under her, the distance began to quickly close but Togetic let out a cry as a sparkling wind pushed upwards from behind him.

Snubbull took the Fairy Wind and was knocked off balance, landing face first in the dirt.

"Alright Togetic, now let's try Ancient Power!" Ash called out.

Togetic came to a stop high in the air as several rocks began orbiting around him. Snubbull pushed herself up and faced upwards as the first of the rocks was sent flying.

Snubbull seemed to brace herself before kicking off once again, for such a small Pokémon she has very strong legs. Landing on the rock, she scurried to the other side before jumping off again. It was reminiscent of when Pikachu used Quick Attack in the past but with a lot more effort being shown.

She continued to jump from one Ancient power to another before right above Togetic. She opened her mouth and bite down hard as ice began to form around his body.

"T-that's ice fang!" Ash gasped as both Pokémon crashed onto the ground, "where did you learn Ice Fang?!"

Snubbull pushed herself up before turning towards him.

"I remembered you mentioning it being a good cover move during that first training session," Snubbull explained, "then on my journey to find you, I met a lovely Sneasel who taught me how to harness ice type energy. She didn't know Ice Fang imparticular, but I took that lesson and mixed it with Bite."

"Then good job, I can already tell your gonna be a great battler," Ash smiled, "but there is one lesson you should learn."

"Huh?" she tilted her head to the side, as if silently asking what it was causing Ash to chuckle happily.

"Don't get distracted in battle," he replied.

Perfectly timed with Snubbull being blown away by a sparkling fairy wind, curtsy of Togetic. The happiness Pokémon soared behind; wings spread in an Aerial Ace.

He shot straight past her, whacking her with his tensed wing before using the built up moment to shoot up into the air.

"Alright now let's try this now!" Ash shouted as he launched a Pokeball.

It struck Snubbull on the head before sucking her inside. Landing on the ground, it shook back and forth as Togetic lowered closer to the ground, seemingly intrigued to see if this would be a successful capture. The ball stopped before bursting open, revealing Snubbull among the smashed Pokeball remains.

Before Ash could make a move, Snubbull jumped from her position, tackling Togetic to the ground as a dust cloud surrounded them.

Ash knew that he had to act fast but

"That's it!" Ash shouted as the lightbulb went off, he didn't need to beat Snubbull, just catch her, "Togetic use Thunder Wave!"

He didn't know if his Happiness Pokémon could hear among the assault, but he crossed his fingers in hopes that he did. A minute passed before the dust finally settled, revealing Snubbull on top of Togetic, static sparking over her body with the fairy flying type panting underneath, looking exhausted.

"Send her flying with Extrasensory!"

Togetic's eyes glew glue before a wave of psychic type energy blew Snubbull high into the air, allowing Togetic to float over to Ash, his body glowing a healing mystic colour from using Roost to help heal his injuries.

Snubbull landed on the ground with a heavy thud but just as quickly pushed her face out of the dirt. She was on all fours as her body began to glow and increase in size, during the process, she stood up onto her hind legs. Ash considered pulling out his Pokedex but figured he could do that after he caught her.

As the glowing stopped, Ash noticed the newly evolved Pokémon's most prominent feature was her large lower jaw with two long fangs growing out of the top. The sides of her head were flat, curved ears and a small black nose in the centre of her face. Something that resembled a black collar was around her neck along with matching braces around each wrist. A short flat tail was also behind her. While she was stood up like a bipedal Pokémon, the size of her arms matched those of her legs and presumably she could be just as comfortable on all four. Ash remembered where he saw one of these before, back at the Pokémon farm between Eckruteak and Olivine.

"So Snubbull evolve into Granbull," he smiled to himself, their names are also pretty similar but without reason to, he never would've thought of that particular encounter with one. Shaking his head as he remembered there was still a battle to conclude, he looked straight into the newly evolved Granbull's eyes, "hey Granbull, you ready to keep going?"

"Of course," she growled back, slamming her two fists together.

"Great," he replied, before turning his attention towards his happiness Pokémon, "and what about you, Togetic?"

"I'm ready!" Togetic shouted back.

Ash chuckled to himself as he watched his happiness Pokémon fly off towards Granbull. It's hard to believe that Togetic has grown up from the small little Togepi he use to carry around. As a stupid wide smile appeared on his face, he prepared for the next part of the battle.

A strong Fairy Wind struck Granbull, but she dug her feet in and crossed her arms, not being knocked over by the attack this time. Static sparking over her body.

Togetic's wings stretched out and stiffened before they sliced over her legs. He soared past her, as she slowly began to move once more, Togetic using the momentum to shoot up into the air and out of her reach.

Ash knew that despite Roost, Togetic couldn't keep going forever, he was already tired from training before this.

"Time to take a gamble, Togetic!" Ash called out, "Metronome!"

Looking at his fairy flying type, Ash could barely make out the wiggling of his little arms before a bright light engulfed him.

A blast of fire shot out from the light straight down onto Granbull. A fire Tornado erupted around Granbull and Ash knew that it wouldn't do much against Granbull based on type but maybe it would be just enough. He took an empty Pokeball in hand and waited until an opening within the flames.

Granbull jumped out of the flames.

The Pokeball soared across the air and struck the paralyzed fairy type. Granbull was sucked inside with a red light before it dropped on the floor. It wobbled back and forth a few times before stopping. Ash held his breath as he awaited the result. Finally, it dinged signalling a successful capture. Smiling to himself, Ash slowly approached the device containing his newest team member before leaning down and picking it up. Gently rolling it through his fingers, his free hand reached into his pocket for the Pokedex:

Granbull, The Fairy Pokémon. The final evolved form of Snubbull. Granbull has a particularly well-developed lower jaw. The enormous fangs are heavy, causing the Pokémon to tip its head back for balance. Unless it is startled, it will not try to bite indiscriminately. They are very friendly Pokémon towards those they trust.

Type: Fairy

Ability: Intimidate

Hidden Ability: Rattled (Note: The hidden ability is locked)

Gender: Female

Nature: Sassy (Note: This nature is unlikely to change because this Pokémon is fully evolved)

Move(s): Play rough, Bite, Headbutt, Ice Fang, Tackle

"Welcome to the team, Granbull," Ash smiled as his Pokedex vibrated.

"Please select which Pokémon you wish to send back." The device requested.

Ash didn't need to consider much since all but Granbull's icons were blacked out and his current team is the one he'll use against Clair. He also already told the fairy Pokémon that she would be sent to the lab so without hesitation he hit her image and shortly after her Pokeball teleported away.

Brock was stood on the stage with Stantler. The other competitors lined up with him as well and the three judges were off to the side. Mr Gold had announced that he ended up winning by a few points and the crowd was cheering. It was a nice feeling, but he probably wouldn't want to do this again. Being the centre of attention just isn't for him, he never took on the career of a breeder for reconisition but to help those in need.

After a final word from each of the judges, they made their way off the stage and into the back room. As soon as he was out of sight of the audience, he released a breath he had been holding in, moving away from the entrance as to not block those behind, he kneeled down so he was at Stantler's girl.

"Well what do you make of that girl, we won," he smiled, scratching behind her ear where she likes it.

Stantler cooed in response, leaning into the show of affection. Brock smiled in response, he could be more proud of her, even if he didn't care about winning this proves how much his little normal type has grown considering she previous created and entire stampede just to scare of any humans.

A forced cough caught Brock's attention and he turned around to see Zane stood over him, his Arcanine stood behind him once again. Brock wasn't sure what to make of this, but his face morphed into a stoic scowl as he stood up to face him. It's funny, as Brock looked at him, it became clear to him that he was actually taller than Zane despite how large a shadow he seemed to cast on Brock earlier.

"What do you want?" Brock asked, wanting to end this as soon as possible.

"To congratulate you," Zane replied, reaching his hand out. Brock was shocked by that response but decided to be the bigger man and accept the gesture, shaking his hand before Zane continued, "the better breeder won."

"Thank you," Brock replied as the handshake ended.

"I would say see you at another competition," Zane turned to the side, throwing his hands into his pockets.

"Probably not," Brock replied, shaking his head, "or even if you do, I won't be competing. I didn't become a breeder for gratitude or fame."

"And I think that's why you won today," Zane sighed, "believe it or not, I was once like you but over my time competing I guess I lost focus of what being a breeder is truly about. I guess Suzy was right, true beauty isn't all about what's on the outside."

Zane began to walk away with his Arcanine following shortly behind. Part of Brock wanted to reach out and stop him, ask him if what he said about himself and Suzy was true, but he couldn't. He already arranged to meet up with Suzy after the competition so he can find out then... and also confess.

As a smile found its way back over his lips, Brock turned to his normal type. He smiled once more as he realised the time was quickly approaching so he congratulated her once more before pulling out her Pokeball and returning her. Clipping the device to his belt, Brock quickly located the exit.

Its time.

Brock took a deep breath of the mountain air; it was the edge of Blackthorn looking down the trail back down the mountain which heads towards New Bark Town. It's funny to think that they are so close to where they started the Johto journey all that time ago.

The view itself was breath taking. As if this piece of natural geology was the work of an artist who single-handily scalped out each inch. The wide cliffs and grass plains mixed with the cool fresh air. The height as if you could look down over the entire Johto region and the howling winds whistling through the trees. It was like one of those scenes in a movie where a great knight looks down on the kingdom he has sworn to protect before joining the final battle.

A small bark sounded behind him and Brock turned around to see it was curtsy of Ninetales, with Suzy following shortly behind. Her teal-blue hair bouncing off the clear blue sky behind and a bright smile which would warm the coldest of nights. He was so captivated by her beauty that he hadn't even noticed they closed the distance.

"I'm sorry we took so long, Brock, Mr Gold wanted to ask if I'd judge future competitions in the future," Suzy explained, "and then Zane said goodbye and I think you might've actually got through to him. Then we had to get past the audienc-oh, sorry, I'm rambling."

Brock couldn't help but smile in response as she sheepishly looked to the side. It was really cute. A quick glance down and Brock saw Ninetales looking directly at him. She flicked her head up to her original trainer and Brock instantly knew she was telling him to get a move on.

He took a deep breath as he felt his thumbing heart against his chest. A tingly numbness over took his fingers as he knew it was now or never. In comparison, getting up on stage was easy. Forcing his eyes forward, he set his nerves straight. He was doing this, now.

"Suzy," he spoke, hoping to sound strong and confident but a cracked voice kinda ruined that.

"Yeah Brock?" she asked, turning back towards him.

"I-I have something to tell you," he stuttered as his mind searched for the right words, "okay, right. Here it goes. When my father left after my mother died, I was stuck looking after my siblings. I don't regret that time, but it meant I could only study breeding on the side and your books were the ones I gravitated towards because they emphasised what I wanted to learn. They spoke to me and helped guide me in my career as a breeder."

"Wow Brock, that means a lot and its really nice to hear," Suzy replied but Brock couldn't focus on her reaction.

"But I'm getting of track," Brock shook his head, looking her straight in the eye, "after reading your books for so long, I finally met you and then you let me take Ninetales with me and helped my development as a breeder grow further than I could've ever dreamed."

"Brock," Suzy sighed, "I've got a bad feeling that I know where you're going with this."

"Look Suzy. This is one of the hardest things I've had to do. I can't quite put into words what I want to say," Brock turned to the side, looking up into the sky, "but from reading your books, I felt a sort of kindred spirit with you and that manifested as attraction but over our time talking, raising Ninetales and just improving as breeders has had that infatuation morph into something more so... all I really want to ask is, will you be my girlfriend?"

Brock closed his eyes as his head was still looking up into the sky. His hand reached to his belt and he unclipped Ninetales Pokeball, not to return her or anything but as a way to make him feel comfortable as he awaited for her answer. After what felt like eternity without a response he opened his eyes and turned towards Suzy. Her head was hanging down with a complete pale face. She looked up, her moist eyes meeting his as chin trembled before she took a deep breath, seeming to prepare to reply.

"Look Brock, I am flattered, I really am. I never really thought I'd have such an effect on anyone, especially how you credit me for your development as a breeder because your already leaps and bounds ahead of myself," Suzy replied, "but I couldn't return your feelings or accept your proposal.

"I do love you, but as a best friend or older brother and I would trust you with my life. Its why I let you take Ninetales... honestly, when I met you in Fuchsia, I was confused by many things and I had a lot of soul searching to do but I didn't want to leave Ninetales without proper care. That's why I asked you to take her and because of that, I was able to discover some things about me. I'm sorry Brock but what I discovered about myself was... that I'm gay, I like women."

"I'm sorry that you've been hurt and if I had known you was starting to feel like this then I would've..." She paused, "I don't know, I would've tried to let you down easy before it got to this point."

Brock felt his hand fall open as the Pokeball which he had been holding dropped by his feet. The nausea swirled unrestrained in his empty stomach. His head swam with half-formed regrets. His heart felt as if his blood had become tar as it struggled to keep a steady beat. His melancholy mood manifested as a dark cloud over his head, contrasting to the beautiful scene they were stood in. It had happened again!

"B-but," he stuttered, "Zane... he said, that you two had dated."

"We did, shortly after I gave you Vulpix. I was confused and thought going on a date would help me understand my feelings," Suzy explained, "but it just felt wrong. I knew that it wasn't what I wanted... needed."

Unable to take it any longer, Brock's feet began running, he didn't know where he was going and honestly he didn't care. As he ran, his eyes squeezed shut as the tears escaped down his cheek. He heard the voices of Suzy and Ninetales calling out to him, but he couldn't stop... it was for the best he dropped her Pokeball, she belongs with Suzy and honest, he doubts he could muster the courage to face her once again after he just embarrassed himself.

Brock slumped down behind a rock he ended up running into. He has no-idea where he is or even how long he was running. Thudding onto the ground, his head sunk into his hands before the dam finally broke and the tears streamed down his face. He couldn't focus on anything else, even if he wanted to. He's always been the rock to help support those who need help but like a rock, when rolling down a mountain. Nothing could possibly support him, only thing he could do is crash somewhere at the bottom.

A bark caught his attention.

"huh?" he questioned as he used his sleeve to whip his eyes from tears, clearing his blurred vision somewhat.

Ninetales was stood in front of him with wide-moist eyes. She leaned down before dropping a Pokeball and a letter. Brock used his sleeve to dry his eyes before reaching forward and picking up the letter. Flipping it open, he saw it was a letter written by Suzy. It read:

'I'm sorry that this happened Brock, I never wanted to hurt you. Talking with Ninetales, we agree its best she stays with you if you're willing to take her. You helped her grow in a way I never could. I hope we can continue to be friends, but I understand if not. My sincerest apologises, Suzy.'

His hand trembled as the letter fell onto the floor. He never really thought that either Ninetales or Suzy would want him to keep the fire fox. Of course, for a long time he thought they would be one big family but obviously that's now the path that was never meant to be.

"Y-you want to stay with me?" Brock asked, looking directly at Ninetales.

The pure fire type nodded before cautiously walking towards him. She licked his cheek before sitting next to him and nuzzling her head into his chest. Unable to take it any longer, he wrapped his arms around her in a hug as she seemed to return the embrace best she could.

They stayed there for a little while in mostly silence. Not sure how long it took but after a while they took their leave. Of course, Brock was still hurting on the inside, but he didn't want his friends to worry. As they made it back towards the Pokémon centre, he found Ash in the middle of his Pokémon, all looking exhausted after what was clearly a tough work out. Misty was currently by a pond with another young boy in some sort of battle, her Marill against a Seadra. Looking across towards a further battlefield, he saw Serena with her team of: Sylveon, Tangela, Magneton, Furret, Quagsire and Murkrow. She mentioned that she would be calling on all her team to prepare for the Grand Festival with some exceptions of those who don't want to compete, like Kabutops and Hitmontop.

As Brock watched this, he couldn't help but frown. He may not have his love returned but he always appreciated the relationship shared between Ash and Serena. Friendship which blossomed into more is always special but ever since the lake Ash has been different. It's understandable, an event like that would change someone but he shouldn't let his relationship suffer because of it. With his mind made up, Brock made his way over to the raven-haired boy.

"Oh, hey Brock, how did your competition go?" Ash asked, "and that thing with Suzy?"

The Pallet native seemed none-the-wiser to what happened between them. His eyes seemed to dart down to where Ninetales was before he looked back up, a smile spread over his face.

"Well I see Ninetales is still here, so I guess you'll be planning on meeting up," Ash smiled as he stood up, but his happy expression morphed into one of concern, "but you don't seem that happy. Did you lose the contest? There's always another time."

"It doesn't matter Ash," Brock dismissed.

"I'm serious Brock, you're a great breeder and I know the others agree," Ash replied, "if there's ever a breeding contest and you want to compete then we'll gladly make a detour. You've gone enough places for the rest of us."

Brock smiled at the gesture, even if he is clueless about what happened, it's nice to know that at least his friends hold him in high regards. A small smile appeared on his lips as he remembered what he actually came over for. He extended an arm, landing it on Ash's shoulder.

"Thanks buddy," Brock replied, "but more importantly, what are you doing over here?"

"What do you mean?" Ash asked, "we're resting. We've been training hard, but I don't want them to over-do it for tomorrows battle. I'll probably take them to Nurse Joy soon for a last check up."

"That's not what I mean," Brock sighed, "your resting is fine, but Serena is still practising. Why aren't you over there watching, giving advice or your opinions?"

"Well," he seemed surprised by the question, "I don't want to distract her."

"None-sense!" Brock cried, "you know Serena would love nothing more than to have your feedback or at least attention. I get you've been upset since the lake but ever since we reached Blackthorn you've seemed back to normal and now so why still distant?"

"I-" Ash replied, his eyes wondering around as if trying to find an answer, "I don't know."

"Then fix it," Brock replied, "go and watch her practice. Tell her how good it is, how she looks. Make her feel special before you push her away... because the alternative isn't worth it... believe me."

Ash didn't seem to wait as he turned around and recalled his team. Once they were all secure in Pokeballs except Pikachu who climbed onto his shoulder, he took off into the centre presumably to give them to Nurse Joy. It's rare for Brock to be so forceful but when a situation is important, he can be as tough as rock. A few minutes later, Ash rushed back outside before running towards a bench close to where Serena was practising.

As he watched the interaction, Brock couldn't help but think of his own love life or whatever if left of it. He lost Professor Ivy, and Suzy and no-other women has even given him a second glance. Which begs the question, who will he end up with, if anyone or is he destined to be forever alone?

And if he won't end up with Suzy, does that mean he will regress back to his over the top proposals? He only fought against the habit for her, after all.
