This was literally the worst day possible.
John gritted his teeth, feeling the vampires on either side of him tighten their grips on his arms.
He had gone out alone, citing that he needed to take care of something and when Mary had wanted to join him, he had made some sort of excuse, he couldn't even remember what the excuse was at this point. But regardless, he had gone out by himself to try to find the vampires and kill them and return before Mary could notice.
But he was a Winchester and as a result, nothing would ever go according to plan.
He had been ambushed by the vampires, Jim had been right, it was a small coven of three vampires, and usually he can handle three vampires against him but only when he had the upper hand and surprise on his side.
And then, once he was captured by the vampires, it got worse.
Mary had come to find him.
The head vampire slowly straightened up, not taking his eyes off of Mary.
"Mary, Mary, is that you?" he whispered before grinning widely. "Why I think it is."
Mary's fingers twitched as she stared at him, her breathing starting to quicken slightly despite the look of disgust on her face. John noticed her hand slowly going behind her.
"I haven't seen you in a while," the vampire murmured, slowly moving towards her. "And the last time I did," his grin widened even more, showing more of his teeth. "You were where you belonged, face down ass in the air, veins bitten."
John jerked at that, barely noticing when the vampires tightened their grips on him bruisingly. "Shut your mouth." he snarled out at him.
The vampire glanced at him disinterestedly. "Aww, Mary. You made a friend." he cooed. "You tried her out yet? Nice and tight. Not like how she'd been when she was younger but still a good hole to fill."
John rushed forward, not caring how the vampires dragged him back forcing him to his knees. "Shut. Your. Mouth." he growled out, trying to wrench free.
The vampire stared at him and then smiled, turning away from Mary disinterestedly. "I have a new idea." he said, clasping his hands behind his back. "I think it's time we add a new member to the coven. And best of all," he smirked and motioned back to his head at Mary. "We already have a seasoned bloodbag here."
Chuckling he brought his arm up, letting his teeth descend down and make a line across his skin, enough for some blood to bleed through. Before he could take another step forward however…
Mary moved. She moved so fast that John didn't even have a chance to see her. He wasn't sure where she had been keeping it but she drew a machete, brought her arm back, and evenly and cleanly cut his head off.
John acted on instinct, feeling the other vampires grip slacken at the sight of their leader's dead body falling to the ground. He reached back and grabbed one, throwing it forward and slamming his elbow into the other, wrenching free from them.
He immediately sprinted to get his machete back from where it had been thrown, gripping it and rushing at the other two, slamming into one when it tried to reach for Mary. the two of them half collapsed onto the ground and John brought his machete up, cutting his head off.
He turned in time to see Mary grip the last vampire and bring it up, a look on her face that he had never seen before, before she threw the vampire back to the ground, put her boot on his chest to keep him in place, and then brought her machete forward to cut its head off.
Breathing heavily Mary looked up at him, bringing her arm up to wipe at her forehead. John started to go towards her but froze when she brought her machete up, pointing it at him.
"You left." she told him, he could hear the anger in her voice at that. "You left me at the motel. To get them by yourself."
John looked at the two vampires she had killed, beheaded them with barely a moment's thought. Despite the lack of real training and brokenly set fingers, she showed just well who she was and where she had come from.
She was Mary Campbell. She was born into a hunter's family. And despite being used and abused by vampires for years, she was still a hunter deep down.
John looked up at her once more, feeling an odd rush inside of him as they stared at one another. There was a splash of blood on her shirt and the way she was holding the machete he could tell that a part of her ached to use it again.
"I didn't want you to get hurt." John told her in a slow murmur. "I didn't want you to possibly get put in danger because of me."
Mary's eyes flashed and she came forward, still pointing the machete at him. "I'm not a child." she half snarled at him. "I know what's out there. Better than you! We're partners, you don't do this to me!"
"I know, I'm sorry." John said, unable to tear his eyes away from her. She was angry and pissed off and she looked like she had half a mind to use the machete on him. She was capable of doing so and he might not even defend himself if not for the fact that Sam and Dean were waiting for him.
She had suffered and been tortured and used in the worst possible ways.
And here she was. Claiming her independence, claiming her freedom and sense of self. Right in front of him, despite her pain and past, she killed two vampires with ease and a satisfaction that he could see in her eyes.
She wasn't a child, he knew that.
She was a hunter, or the very least generations upon generations result of hunters. She had the instincts, she had the drive.
"I'm sorry." John repeated, his voice soft. Whatever she saw in his face must have been enough because she lowered the machete back to her side. "I won't do it again. I promise."
"If you do." Mary told him. "I'm taking the two boys and throwing you to the werewolves." he didn't really believe her, despite her words her tone was soft and yielding. She moved the rest of the way and finally pressed into him, arms coming up to hug him. "You okay?"
John moved carefully to avoid the machete as he wrapped his arms around her. "I'm fine. Are you?" he asked, remembering what the vampire had said about her.
He felt her take a deep breath and pressed closer to him, he tightened his grip around her. "I'm alive and he's not." she said. "That's already better."
