Chapter 93: Ambushes Part 6
Hi there everyone. Many thanks to IanAlphaAxel, Magic713, Raxius, Lilly The Omega Wolf, 3697014 and Psychology Nerd for your recent reviews of this story. I'm glad that everyone liked the previous chapter.
Thanks for your comments on the various things that I mentioned in my author's notes at the end of the last chapter. It's good to know that people will still read my one-shots regardless of whether they fit into the canon that Last Evolution sets. It was also interesting to know your different views on Last Evolution and the Adventure reboot.
"Celestial Arrow!" Angewomon called out her main attack again. Kari watched as her partner fired the arrow of light straight at one of the Scorpiomon within the group that they were fighting. It struck the sea monster right between its eyes and pierced straight through its exoskeleton, killing it instantly.
Kari continued to watch on as she and TK remained sitting in the safety of Megakabuterimon's hand whilst the giant red bug hovered a safe distance away from the battle. Mimi and Izzy were with them, like normal, while they performed their second ambush of the day. Things were still going well for the Digidestined even though there were some noticeable differences compared to the previous days.
"There are a lot more groups of bad guys in Tokyo today," Kari stated matter-of-factly as she informed the others of what her extra sense was telling her. "Each group is also much larger than we've seen for quite some time."
"You can say that again," Mimi huffed. "The first group we ambushed today was the largest that we've seen in a while and this one is even larger."
Kari's focus remained on her partner as she fired more arrows at some of the Gesomon holding onto the buildings that lined the road. The arrows deleted them instantly as Lillymon took out a couple of Ebidramon at the same time. Magnaangemon's Gate of Destiny continued to pull in the Deep Ones, ripping them off the road and thinning out their numbers rather quickly.
"I wonder if it has anything to do with Metalseadramon or that strong force of evil Digimon and Deep Ones at the entrance to the bay?" Izzy asked the question that had been on Kari's mind and, she guessed, everyone else's minds too.
TK nodded. "It's quite likely. Dragomon's forces had been concentrated in the Chiba region until today. It makes me wonder how things are going for Davis and the others with him."
"Yeah." Kari nodded too. "I wonder if they're dealing with their usual numbers of bad guys or if things have changed there as well."
Kari closed her eyes for a moment to try and concentrate on her sixth sense to see if she could answer her questions herself. She gulped as she noticed that the large concentration of dark energy, which she believed was Metalseadramon and his entourage, had moved from where it was five or so minutes ago when she and TK had taken a reading on it. She reopened her eyes and glanced to her right at her husband.
"Those Digimon in Tokyo Bay are on the move," Kari announced as her eyes remained fixed on TK, hoping that he'd confirm it.
She watched him close his eyes as both Izzy and Mimi turned their full attention to the couple. Within a few seconds, TK reopened them and gulped too. "Yeah, they're moving further up into the bay."
"Are they coming for us?" Mimi asked and Kari couldn't miss the worry creeping into her friend's tone. "Or are they doing something else?"
"I don't think they're coming for us." Kari shook her head. "If they were, they would probably come straight for us and they're not at the moment. It feels like they're heading for the other side of Tokyo."
"Keep tracking them just to make sure that they don't change direction," Izzy instructed as explosions echoed down the street from Angewomon's and Lillymon's attacks. "We'll continue on like normal until they become an issue for us."
"Right." Kari nodded before her focus returned to the fight. She watched as her partner finished off the last of the evil Digimon before the final Deep Ones were pulled into the Gate of Destiny. Silence fell over the battlefield as the Chosen Digimon returned to their partners and the group made their way to the next location where they planned to get readings on Dragomon's location and perform more ambushes.
"Dragomon is currently at one hundred and seventy six degrees from us right now," Kari informed Izzy as she looked down at her compass to get another reading on their enemies' leader's location. "That powerful group of bad guys is still on the move and getting closer to Tokyo."
TK nodded. "I've got the same reading and, unfortunately, Kari is right about that group still coming towards Tokyo."
Izzy quickly made a note of the direction and triangulated Dragomon's location again. "Dragomon is still far out in the ocean in his usual place. Including the reading we took when we left the base, we now have four readings. I think that's enough, which means that we can focus on ambushes and that group coming into Tokyo."
"Should we go and spy on them?" Mimi asked as she pointed in the direction of Tokyo Bay. "We might get some useful information."
"It would probably be a bit too dangerous," Kari sighed as she focused on what her extra sense was telling her about that group. "They're too powerful for us to deal with alone, so I get the feeling that we should keep our distance. If we get too close, it could be bad for us."
"Then we'll just do our usual thing." Mimi smiled. "We can't let you be hurt for very obvious reasons."
"Then let's get on with the next ambush," Izzy said as he put his laptop away before he turned his attention to Angewomon, Magnaangemon and Lillymon. "We'll meet back up with you near that radio tower once you finish the ambush."
"Understood," Magnaangemon nodded before he flew off with Angewomon and Lillymon following him. The three Digimon dived down and launched their attacks at the Deep Ones in the group. Explosions echoed through the air as their attacks struck home, taking out a noticeable amount of their foes.
Kari surveyed their enemies as Magnaangemon set up the Gate of Destiny again in front of their targets. The doors opened and began ripping the Deep Ones off the ground, pulling them to their doom. Angewomon and Lillymon swooped down towards the bad guys, using their attacks to take out the marine Digimon amongst the black mass of the shadow-like amphibians.
This group was still definitely larger than the ones that they had been facing until today, but it was smaller than the first two patrols that they had attacked earlier. After the second volley of attacks, there were at least three Scorpiomon still alive that Kari could see and she could count eleven Gesomon. There were also six Ebidramon in the group alongside three Octomon.
The Octomon and Gesomon retaliated by firing ink in the direction of both Angewomon and Lillymon. Kari held her breath as she watched the two Chosen Digimon duck and weave around the attacks as they prepared another bombardment of their own. As soon as their foes finished, Angewomon released a giant pink cross straight at the marine Digimon and scored a direct hit. Lillymon used her Flower Cannon to pick off the surviving evil Digimon, leaving only the Deep Ones left.
The Chosen Digimon focused on mopping up the remaining Deep Ones and, within a few minutes, the last of the shadow creatures were being pulled into the Gate of Destiny. The gate closed as the three Digimon flew over to the rendezvous point where Megakabuterimon was waiting for them. They flew back inside the barrier before everyone's gaze fixed onto Kari and TK for their next set of instructions.
Kari closed her eyes and used her extra sense again. She quickly reopened them and focused on TK, meeting the gaze of his sapphire pair. They both gulped and the brunette knew that they had sensed the same thing.
"That group is now coming in our direction," Kari informed them. "They're still some distance away, so they're not an immediate threat. However, I feel that we should definitely get out of this area just in case."
Kari glanced down at the city below them as Megakabuterimon continued to fly over Tokyo. She was using her extra sense to track the large group of bad guys and she was fairly certain that they were now where she and her friends had ambushed that group thirty or so minutes ago. They were now close enough for her to know for sure that this wasn't just a large battalion of the regular evil monsters.
"I think Metalseadramon is with that group," TK announced as they continued flying away from that area where the metal monster now was. "I can feel his darkness amongst all of them."
Kari's gaze met her husband's and she nodded. "Yeah, I can sense him too."
"Are we safe and far enough away from them to perform another ambush?" Izzy asked as he glanced over at the couple. "Or do you think that we are still too close?"
"We've been flying for half an hour," Mimi shrugged as her eyes fixed onto her boyfriend. "That should be long enough, right?"
"I think that we're far enough away to perform another ambush," Kari nodded as she double checked to make sure that Metalseadramon was staying where he was and not coming towards them. "We better make it a quick one though."
"There's a group over by the park." TK pointed in the direction that he could sense some darkness being emitted by a different platoon of evil creatures. "We should be able to defeat them and get out of here before Metalseadramon gets too close."
"Ok." Izzy gave a nod of his head. "Let's go Megakabuterimon. Get us over there and the others can do the rest. We'll meet up above the fire station."
The giant red bug led the other Digimon in the direction of the bad guys that TK had picked out. Kari was glad that the dark creatures were in a park because it meant that they were in a wide-open space with nowhere to run. It also made it easier for her and the others to see what they were up against as they carefully approached their next target.
These bad guys were another powerful group that had much greater numbers compared to the platoons that they'd regularly faced in the city before today. Kari could see that there were five Scorpiomon, at least ten Gesomon, around the same number of Ebidramon and about eight Octomon. She could spot a few Scubamon too amongst the black wriggling mass of Deep Ones that sprawled over the park.
Magnaangemon, Angewomon and Lillymon flew out from the barrier surrounding Megakabuterimon before the giant bug headed over to their agreed meeting point. Kari watched Angewomon launch a pink cross straight at the group of Scorpiomon and score a direct hit. The explosion from the attack hitting the ground rang in Kari's ears as she watched the evil Digimon and the monsters around them being vaporised by the light energy.
Lillymon and Magnaangemon followed it up with attacks of their own, finishing off the two remaining Scorpiomon before turning their focus to other foes. Magnaangemon set up the Gate of Destiny once again as Lillymon started focusing on the Scubamon amongst the Deep Ones. Angewomon looped over some ink fired in her direction by some Gesomon before she retaliated with another Heaven's Charm. It wiped the sea monsters out along with the Deep Ones clinging onto the ground around them.
There were still plenty of evil Digimon and Deep Ones left as the Gate of Destiny began pulling the Deep Ones off the ground and to their demise. Lillymon's Flower Cannon helped out by blasting some of the shadow creatures into the air every time she took out a Scubamon in between them. Angewomon kept dodging their foes' attacks before she released crosses of light into the mass of evil beings, deleting large numbers each time.
Kari took a deep breath as her eyes kept scanning over the battlefield. It was taking longer than she had hoped because of the numbers that they were facing. Their Digimon were handling it well and taking out their enemies but it was slow progress. Her gaze remained fixed on the Chosen Digimon as they kept up their attacks, taking out more of the evil monsters and thinning out their numbers.
"I think Metalseadramon is coming our way," TK spoke up, capturing the attention of the group. "He seems to have moved from where he was and his darkness is getting stronger, which means he's getting closer."
Kari closed her eyes and used her extra sense to check. "You're right. It feels like he's coming straight for us."
"Do we have enough time to finish this fight or should we leave right now?" Izzy asked as his eyebrows furrowed. "How quickly is he coming towards us?"
Kari checked on the distance between them and Metalseadramon again. She thought that she had a good idea on how fast he was going and how long they had before they needed to escape. "We were flying quite fast over the past half an hour, so it'll take him a while to get here. I think we should have enough time if everything keeps going smoothly."
"Let us know if that's not going to be the case," Izzy replied with seriousness lacing his tone. "We shouldn't take any risks."
"I will." Kari nodded before an explosion made her focus back on the battle. She watched as Angewomon finished off the last of the Gesomon and turned her attention to some of the other evil Digimon. The Deep Ones' numbers were beginning to thin out as a constant stream of them were pulled into the Gate of Destiny.
Kari subconsciously tightened her grip on TK's hand, which she only noticed that she'd done after he reciprocated it. She took a deep breath as she realised that she didn't like this situation at all. Were they playing into some master plan of Metalseadramon's or Dragomon's? It was certainly a possibility and one that wouldn't leave her mind.
Lillymon fired another green sphere of energy at the last remaining Scubamon that Kari could see. The fairy Digimon moved her focus onto the Deep Ones that were clinging onto objects around the park, launching attack after attack at them to finish the fight quicker. She blew up several of the amphibians that were grasping onto a tree before taking out some clutching to a bench.
Angewomon fired several arrows straight at the Octomon who were gripping onto various trees in a desperate attempt at surviving the pull of the Gate of Destiny. Her attacks pierced their rubbery skin one by one, deleting them and making the Chosen's task easier. She moved her focus onto the Ebidramon, using her arrows of light again to finish them off.
The three Chosen Digimon turned their full attention to the remaining Deep Ones to get the battle finished before Metalseadramon got too close. They focused their efforts on the shadow creatures that were hanging onto things, dwindling down their numbers even more. The explosions from their attacks broke the grips of other Deep Ones too, allowing them to be pulled to their doom by the Gate of Destiny.
Kari could sense that the darkness being given off by the group was dropping very quickly now and that they would be able to end this ambush in time. Although, her extra sense also told her that Metalseadramon was coming for them as quickly as he could. It was going to be much closer than she would have liked.
Angewomon and Lillymon rained down their attacks on the remaining Deep Ones, finishing off the last of those holding out as the final few were pulled into the Gate of Destiny. The doors of the gateway closed before the three Chosen Digimon quickly flew over to the rendezvous point. They flew back inside the barrier surrounding Megakabuterimon and joined back up with their partners.
"Alright, let's go." Kari pointed westwards from them and away from Metalseadramon. She'd picked this heading because she also knew that it was a direction that wasn't straight back towards their base. Thankfully, it was also the option with the least number of bad guys. "Fly in this direction until we're safe."
The Chosen Digimon did as she ordered, setting off on the safest route for them. Kari glanced over her shoulder and she could see the darkened sky where Metalseadramon's force was. She could see his silhouette standing out amongst what she guessed were probably hundreds of Pteramon and Skullbaluchimon.
The brunette teen felt TK's grip on her hand tighten slightly, making her turn and gaze into his sapphire eyes. He pursed his lips for a moment before letting out a long sigh. "That's a little too close for comfort."
"Yeah." Kari nodded. "I didn't expect him to get here that quickly."
"I think that we should stop our ambushes for today," Izzy spoke up, capturing everyone's attention. "It's clear that Metalseadramon is following us around the city and focusing on us. It's too risky to keep playing a cat and mouse game like this with him."
"We'd need everyone to be with us to be able to fight him right now," Mimi sighed as her shoulders dropped. "They'd need to be at full strength too."
"Agreed." TK gave a nod of his head as his focus returned to Metalseadramon. "He's definitely brought a strong force with him and we can't take them out by ourselves."
"Then we're in full agreement." Kari paused for a moment as she glanced behind them once more. She watched as Metalseadramon stopped over where they were a few minutes ago and he, thankfully, seemed to stay there. "We'll call it quits for today and head back to base."
My first draft of this chapter wasn't a particularly great one and it was filled with mistakes. I've had to do a lot of editing and it's taken me a lot longer to get this chapter to a publishable state than I thought it might for something this long. Hopefully I've managed to correct all of my errors and made it into something that flows now.
So, more of the bad guys have moved from the ocean and into Tokyo. Metalseadramon is also about and following the Digidestined around. It's a change of tactics from him and Dragomon, so what do you think they're up to?
On a different note, I've not seen Digimon Adventure Last Evolution yet. I'm guessing that it's only in theatres at the moment because, from what I can see, Crunchyroll aren't streaming it. It looks like we'll have to wait a while longer before we can watch the movie. Also, I heard that a book version of it has been released already, but that's in Japanese and I can't read Japanese unfortunately.
Please can you let me know your thoughts about these things and this chapter as a whole by posting a review? :D
