The Untold Story of Serena Butterfly
Chapter 80: Bittersweet
In Butterfly Castle...
Pamela was making cookies with her daughters, Moon and friends in the kitchen.
Queen Moon wore a white apron to protect her blue dress from being stained.
Harriet and Andromeda were looking at the recipes of a baking book that contained pages of how to make cakes, pies, truffles, puddings and cookies.
"Hey, what about this one?"Andromeda suggested. "Can we have a angel cake, mamma?"
"It's angel food cake, stupid and you don't get a vote."Harriet retorted with a frown. "It's my birthday."
"I know it is."Andromeda responded bitterly.
"Mind your manners, Harryo."Pamela instructed.
An image of a coconut cream cake page caught Harriet's attention.
"That one!"Harriet remarked pointing at the coconut cream cake page. "That's the one I want with the number 6 on it."
"Coconut it is."Pamela complemented with a smile.
"I hate coconut."Andromeda scowled with her arms folded.
"Andy, you've never had coconut."Pamela chuckled.
"Well, strawberries are more of my type."Andromeda stated.
Andromeda looked at the cookies that were in the oven.
"Ooh, they look so yummy!"Andromeda giggled as she reached our hand to open the oven. "I think they're ready..."
Harriet hits her big sister's hand with a wooden spoon.
"Ow!"Andromeda cried out in pain and held her hand. "What was that for?!"
"We're supposed to check if it's done or not."Harriet reminded holding the baking book. "I prefer to follow the instructions in this recipe book than trust your stupid eyes, it's safer."
"Oh yeah?!"Andromeda growled.
"Yeah!"Harriet snapped. "That's right!"
Andromeda and Harriet glared at each other.
"Alright dears, let me take a look."Moon said as she walked forward and checked the oven. "Just a little more. You have to wait until they start turning golden brown around the edges."
"Told you."Harriet responded smugly.
Andromeda gritted her teeth and glared angrily at het little sister.
"Stupid batter!"Esther scowled bitterly as she was having hard time mixing the ingredients in a bowl.
"Esther, you're not supposed to dump the sugar in all at once."Pamela chuckled. "Remember, impatience will get you nowhere in life."
"That is so true."Esther commented as she ate some of the chocolate chips.
"Esther."Shirley said with a frown. "In case you haven't noticed, you ate most of the chocolate chips that were supposed to be for the cookies."
"I can't stop myself."Esther remarked. "It's not easy to shut one's mouth, you know?"
"That's not how you use that phrase."Artix mumbled in disapproval.
"Thankfully, we can still make cookies but we'll have to forget about the chocolate chips."Moon admitted.
The group noticed Isobel was using a cup of glass to bend the cookie doughs into small circle shapes.
"Wow...that's really clever, Isobel."Pamela complemented.
"You've been secretly practicing, haven't you?"Charlotte suggested with a smile.
"My mother taught me this trick."Isobel replied.
"Your mum?"Pamela asked.
"Uh-huh."Isobel responded. "She's very busy and is away most of the time. But when I was little, she would often bake me cookies to try and cheer me up. She'd say, Look, Izzy. These are special cookies that will give you lots and lots of energy."
Then the little bird in the cuckoo clock came out and started hooting.
"The three o'clock fairy is already here."Shirley announced.
"The three o'clock fairy?"Artix said.
"What's that?"Esther asked.
"Oh...it's a silly story."Shirley assured with a sheepish smile.
"Now I'm curious."Andromeda stated. "Tell us."
"When I was little, my mum used to always bake me a cake at three o'clock."Shirley explained. "I once asked why she makes it at three and mum said it's because of the three o'clock fairy. It's a fairy who comes around at three telling mums to make snacks for their kids. But at the time, I didn't get what she meant by a three o'clock fairy, so I thought it was that little bird in the cuckoo clock."
"That's a cute story."Harriet giggled.
"There was always something special about my mum's homemade cakes."Shirley added.
"You're right."Charlotte agreed. "Whenever my mother baked me and Artix cookies, I thought to myself...that there was always a bright side to feeling down."
"I feel sort of jealous, I never baked anything sweet with my mum."Pamela admitted with her arms folded.
"It can't be worse than Andromeda burnt pavlovas."Harriet complemented simply.
"Why do you have to bring up things like that?!"Andromeda snapped angrily.
"That's so you, Andy."Pamela said with a smile.
"Mum, your not helping!"Andromeda argued.
"Those were very touching stories."Valen commented. "It sounds like sweets are something filled with wonderful memories."
"Memories are nice, but what matters most is finding your future happiness!"Esther stated firmly.
Then the oven alarm went off causing Andromeda and Harriet to take out their cookies.
Andromeda's cookies were decorated beautifully while Harriet's looked a bit burned and messy.
"Ha ha! Are my cookies beautiful or what?!"Andromeda laughed in victory and smirked at Harriet. "Your cookies are super ugly! There's no comparison!"
"Oh be quiet!"Harriet snapped angrily while blushing and picked up a burnt cookie. "My cookies win in the taste department! They're special cookies! One bite will increase your power and courage a hundred fold!"
"If you say so."Andromeda replied with a smirk. "I already know mine tastes better..."
Andromeda eats one of her cookies causing her to pale in disgust.
"Good grief..."Moon said and face palmed.
"My cookies haven't been tried yet."Harriet reminded proudly.
Pamela, Moon, Isobel, Shirley, Esther, Valen, Artix and Charlotte started eating Harriet's cookies.
"Hey."Shirley remarked. "Harryo's batch is actually really good."
"You're right."Artix agreed. "They're delicious."
"They may look funny, but their taste is perfect."Pamela complemented sweetly.
Harriet sent a smirk at her older sister.
"See? Told you."Harriet chuckled with a smirk.
"Why are you all taking her side?!"Andromeda cried and took out a tissue. "I'm sure dad will eat these and think they are delicious."
This caused the group to grow nervous.
"Think that Andy and your more puzzled than Sisaylin the Perplexed."Harriet mumbled with a frown.
In Avalon Castle...
Louis was reading a book in his room while his grandmother, Rosette Maxwell, brought him a glass of water.
The young boy wore a long-sleeved light blue shirt with a blue vest, white pants and light blue shoes.
Rosette Maxwell was an old woman with grey auburn hair worn in a high heart-shaped pompadour with a small light grey streak in the middle. She had fair skin and red green eyes. She wore a crimson gown with a golden brooch near her neck that has a green gem in it and the gown had a high purple collar with extended purple sleeves. She wore a large green ring on her right ring finger that matched her earrings.
"I thought you'd be going off to hunt with your father."Rosette said.
"I changed my mind."Louis replied simply. "I've had enough of killing for a while."
"Louis, have you thought about what will happen to us when your father dies?"Rosette asked.
"Why should anything happen to us, grandma?"Louis questioned. "Andromeda will be queen, that's all."
"You do realise Avalon never had a female ruler before."Rosette commented. "Pamela will throw me out of this castle before Drakath's body is cold and your sister's mercy is all that will stand between you and death."
"What's the point of talking about this?"Louis asked. "There's nothing either of us can do to change things."
"What if you were no longer a bastard?"Rosette responded with a smirk. "What if you were legitimised? Given legal status as Drakath's son?"
"Does my father want this?"Louis asked in surprise.
"Why shouldn't he want it?"Rosette said with a smile. "You've always been his favourite."
"And he always said I was his favourite because I never ask him for anything."Louis retorted with a frown.
"It's not such an unreasonable request."Rosette remarked simply. "This is happening all over other kingdoms. Kings claiming their children."
"Well, that's certainly not happening here."Louis answered with a glare.
"If Drakath's marriage to Pamela were to be annulled..."Rosette started.
"That is treason. You're talking about changing the line of succession."Louis reminded coldly as he stood up. "And that's the sort of talk that gets illegitimate children and their relatives beheaded."
Back in Butterfly Castle...
Shirley was playing chess with Harriet in a room.
"Shirley."Harriet said with a frown.
"Yes, Harryo?"Shirley asked with a smile.
"Why are you staying with us in our house?"Harriet questioned.
"Well, my husband took my sons away from me, so your mum happily invited me to stay with you guys for a while."Shirley replied.
Harriet stared at Shirley with a look of suspicion.
"Can I tell you something?"Harriet asked.
"Sure go on."Shirley complemented as she took a sip of her apple cider.
"I find your alone time with my dad disturbing."Harriet complemented bitterly.
Shirley choked on her drink and coughed.
"What do you mean?"Shirley coughed.
"When my dad is sometime not around, your not around either."Harriet commented narrowing her eyes suspiciously. "Are you two hiding stuff from my mum?"
Before Shirley could respond, she suddenly dropped on the floor causing some of the chess piece to fell as well, shocking Harriet.
In the Butterfly Castle's Garden...
Andromeda was practising her magic in the garden with Pamela watching her.
The Avalon Princess closes her eyes to concentrate as a bit of magic appeared in her hands.
Then a bit of barrier spikes appeared beneath her.
"Well done, Andromeda."Pamela responded proudly. "Your getting there."
"But I was supposed to have barrier spikes around me."Andromeda commented sadly.
Pamela placed a kiss on Andromeda's forehead.
"Keep practising and you will able to do any spell."Pamela instructed kindly.
"Mama, why does Aunt Moon always wear gloves?"Andromeda asked.
Pamela's eyes widen since Andromeda was still too young to understand.
"Um...why do you ask, sweetie?"Pamela asked with a nervous smile.
"She always wear gloves."Andromeda said softly. "Even when there's no need to. Is there something on her arms she doesn't want others to see?"
Pamela sighed and led Andromeda to her private chambers, where they wouldn't be disturbed or seen.
In Pamela's Old Bedroom...
Pamela sat down on her bed and Andromeda sat down beside her.
"When Moon was a young teenager, she became the new Queen of Mewni because a very bad monster killed her mother."Pamela admitted.
A calm expression was on Andromeda's face.
Andromeda had witnessed death when her favourite squirrelicorn was carried off by a hawk when Harriet was 'playing' with it.
"This monster was dangerous and incredibly evil."Pamela said. "She had to find a way to defeat him and so she went to speak to a former queen who dabbled in dark magic."
"But...isn't dark magic bad?"Andromeda asked.
"Yes, dear, but in this case, it was the only option."Pamela replied. "Her job as Queen of Mewni is to protect the people and sometimes that calls for doing something that you normally wouldn't do. As I was saying, she used this spell to avenge her mother, defeat the monster and send a powerful message to his army. But because it was dark magic, it left it's purple marks on her veins that will never go away."
"Oh..."Andromeda answered. "That monster is a septarian isn't?"
"Yeah, they are nothing but horrible selfish beings."Pamela warned. "Never go near them, do you understand Andromeda?"
"Yes, mommy."Andromeda replied. "I don't get something. How come great-aunt Mercedes meddles with dark magic?"
"Well, let's just say...it's her speciality."Pamela responded. "She has a reputation that makes everyone be afraid of her."
"I don't trust her."Andromeda admitted with a small frown. "I feel like death is front of me whenever I see her."
"She is just not right in the head despite her personal nature."Pamela complemented with a smile and stroked Andromeda's hair gently.
Andromeda became quiet and didn't say anything.
"Mama!"
Pamela and Andromeda notice Harriet rushing towards them.
"What's wrong, Harryo?"Pamela asked.
"It's Shirley."Harriet replied worriedly. "We were playing chess and she suddenly collapsed."
In the Lab...
Shirley slowly woke up finding Pamela, Andromeda, Harriet and Juno staring at her and notice she was lying on a bed.
"Are you all right?"Pamela asked.
Shirley didn't respond as she held the blanket close to her body.
"She's fine, my lady."Juno answered. "We've not yet begun."
"Please leave us."Pamela ordered.
Andromeda and Harriet walked away holding Juno's hands, leaving Pamela with Shirley.
"Remain in Avalon with me."Pamela suggested. "Your husband could kill you."
"Pamela, please, I can't."Shirley cried. "I have to do this. If you knew the whole story."
"It doesn't matter how it happened."Pamela assured kindly. "You're pregnant and I understand. It's not the end of the world, not unless you make it so. Let me help you."
"Oh, if you if you only knew."Shirley responded with a weak smile.
The smile on Pamela's face vanished as a sudden realisation came in her mind.
Pamela let go of her friend's shoulders.
"When Drakath returned from Zandorya, you were at his side."Pamela said with a startled look.
Shirley looked at her friend quietly.
"Is that my husband's child?"Pamela asked.
"Yes."Shirley sobbed with a nod and covered her face to cry more.
Pamela backed away from Shirley, her heart now filled with hatred and betrayal.
In Avalon...
It was night time.
Drakath went back in his chamber, where a hurtful Pamela sat on his bed.
"Of all the women in Mewni you had to throw yourself on her."Pamela scowled in anger. "I have never once objected to any of your affairs. I have accepted whatever arrangement you have proposed. I have raised Louis as my own son. But this...I have never thought would happen. Why couldn't you keep your hands off of my best friend?"
Pamela slammed her fist on the bed as Drakath's face had a hint of guilt.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?!"Pamela shouted. "You have robbed me from stealing my trustworthy friend!"
Drakath didn't respond as Pamela held her head.
"I...I've never planned to have an official mistress when we married, Pamela."Drakath admitted. "As a husband, I have fulfilled what I promised. But, as a wife, you have not."
"She has to go, now."Pamela demanded with a glare. "She is never to set foot in this kingdom again!"
"Calm down, Pamela."Drakath reminded.
"I want her out!"Pamela screamed in rage. "I never want to lay eyes on her again! Go down and tell her to leave at once!"
"I couldn't ask her that."Drakath stated firmly. "I won't do it, Pam."
Pamela scoffed coldly at her husband before rushing out of the room.
In his Private Room...
Valen took off the rug that covered his arm and saw the bite mark from the Shadow Beast left him a black stain.
"Everyone will want your head rotting on a spike soon enough."
The red haired man scowled at Listol's words before putting a long grey glove to cover his wound.
Valen looked out the window and noticed Pamela walking by herself.
Outside...
Pamela was lost in her thoughts as she slowly walked by herself in the green fields of Avalon that was next to a lake before Valen walked up to her.
"Is Drakath too busy giving you company early in the morning?"Valen asked as he walked next to his friend.
"He has other things on his mind."Pamela replied simply. "It's nothing I can discuss with you."
"You don't have to please others all the time."Valen stated.
"It's what I've been brought up to do, thanks to my mother."Pamela responded bitterly. "Difficult lesson to learn from."
"Pam, I believe you do it so that people will love you."Valen commented.
"What makes you say that?"Pamela questioned.
"From what I've seen."Valen answered. "With your husband, your children, your friends, especially Shirley, even the public."
"I never thought of it that way before."Pamela said. "You make me sound so pitiable."
"Sorry."Valen replied. "But Pam, can you tell me what is wrong."
"I fear I've done some things in my life gone wrong and it's too late to run away from them."Pamela admitted with a sad frown.
Valen placed his hand on Pamela's.
"No, you haven't."Valen assured with a warm smile.
Pamela looked at Valen quietly before the two closed their eyes and kissed.
"I'm sorry."Valen apologised.
"Thank you."Pamela whispered softly.
The two then shared another passionate kiss.
