Chapter 62.
Following Olivia's seizure, Ricky had managed to get her a hospital appointment. Luckily, Brax agreed to come with her for support. They were sat in the waiting room, Ricky clutching Olivia, her pink blanket around her, she was tapping her leg up and down impatiently.
"Stop it," Brax put a hand on her leg.
"Sorry, I'm just. "
"I know. "
"Erica Sharpe. Please. If you'd like to come this way. " A doctor that Ricky didn't recongise, with light brown hair, came out.
Ricky stood up, holding Olivia while Brax pushed her pram in to the room, leaving it by the door.
"I'm doctor Tori Morgan, I believe you have some concerns?" Tori said, holding her hand out to shake Ricky's and then Brax's.
Ricky nodded. "I'm worried about my baby, she's sleeping a lot, not making eye contact"
"How old is she?" Tori asked.
"Three months"
Telling Ricky to put Olivia on the exam table, the doctor looked in her eyes with a flashlight, but instead of looking in to the flashlight, Olivia looked down.
"Does she react to things?" Tori asked.
Ricky shook her head, lifting Liv down from the table. "No."
Tori wrote something down in her notepad.
"I'd like to give Olivia an MRI scan. " Tori said.
"No," Ricky said. "I'm not letting you put my baby through an MRI."
"Miss Sharpe, it'll give us a clearer picture to see what we are dealing with. " Tori explained.
Ricky shook her head.
"Can you give us a sec?" Brax asked.
Tori agreed and left them to it.
"This is all my fault, when I left her. " Ricky said, reflecting on the time when she'd left Olivia alone.
"It is not your fault" Brax said.
"OK, " She nodded. "She can have the MRI."
"Good girl" Brax kissed the top of her head, just as the doctor came back in.
"Have you made a decision?" She asked.
"Yes, I want her to have the MRI" Ricky said.
"OK, "We can use feed and wrap," Tori explained.
"What?" Brax said.
"It's where the baby is feed and wrapped, instead of sedating her." Tori said.
Ricky cuddled Olivia, she didn't want her sedated. Tori gave her a few minutes to feed Liv and wrap her up. Brax got up to give Ricky her privacy.
"Stay, please"
Brax nodded and sat back down as Ricky feed Liv. "It's OK"
After she'd finished feeding, she changed her nappy and wrapped her in her blanket and carried her to the MRI room with Tori. With Liv now asleep, Ricky lay her on the table and stayed as the machine moved in. Once the scan was complete, it was back to Tori's office.
"What if this is bad news?" Ricky fretted, biting her lip.
"Wait and see what the scan shows" Brax advised her.
Tori was looking at the MRI scan of Olivia's brain, some areas of her brain were enlarged. She knew what this meant. Taking the MRI down, she went to talk to her colleague, who agreed to come in to the room.
"Miss Sharpe, I'm very sorry to have to tell you this, but Olivia has hydrocalfus. "
"What?" Brax questioned, he'd never heard of this condition.
"Her head is slightly larger than average. Eyes that are downcast, they all point to signs of hydrocalphus"
"Is there anything we can do?" Brax questioned.
"I'm afriad not, hydrocephalus is a life long condition."
"Thank you for letting us know, " Ricky whispered, walking out. Brax muttered an apology to Tori, before taking the pram and finding Ricky by the wall, tears threatening to overfill. "I don't believe it."
"It's a shock, I know" Brax told her. "But I'm here to support you, both of you."
"Thank you, " Ricky whispered, securing Olivia in to her pram as they walked out of the hospital, but she couldn't help but feel that this was all her fault.
