A/N: Sorry, sorry, sorry. I know this is almost two months later than I promised but life has really been thrown for a loop recently with this whole Covid situation. I know I have more free time than ever to write but I've been struggling to focus on writing. I've had to move. I've lost my job. I've had to quarantine away from home. Everything's hit the fan. But, on the bright side, this is one of the longer chapters at over 20,000 words so that's something. And a lot of plots reach their climax in this chapter so yay. I hope everybody is staying safe and healthy through these trying times. Wash your hands, stay in your homes and enjoy reading :)
Chapter 63
A Game of Chess
"Right this way Mr. Shellbreaker," Nack smiled devilishly as he led Shellbreaker through one of the winding gravel paths that snaked around the buildings, ovals and chill-out areas that dotted the grounds of Emerald Lake campus.
"Where are you taking me young man?" Shellbreaker asked as he followed in step. He fiddled with the button of his blazer as he spoke. He wasn't used to wearing suits and ties, often opting for more casual attire, but he was expecting to meet Mina's principle and he wanted to make a good impression.
"I'm taking you to Mina's room. She's expecting you. But, I must warn you, you might not recognize her. She's probably changed a lot since the last time you saw her," Nack explained.
"I'm sure she has. Puberty will change a girl and I'm sure she's blossomed into a fine young woman. My young woman." Nack had to hide his visible shudder. He wasn't sure what it was about this guy but he even gave Nack the creeps. He almost felt bad doing what he was about to do. Almost.
"I think it's a little more than that. Here," Nack pulled out a folded up picture and handed it to Shellbreaker. His brows knotted in perplexion as he studied the image; an image of Breezie.
"This isn't my Mina."
"I can assure you it is."
"No, look, this is clearly a hedgehog. Mina is a mongoose, and she's my daughter. I think I'd know what she looks like," Shellbreaker argued.
"That's why Razor instructed me to help you. Mina has changed a lot. I was just as surprised as you. When I first met her in the seventh grade she looked so different. She had long indigo hair and beautiful green eyes and didn't care what anybody thought but a few years ago she had a really bad break up and went through some serious depression."
"My poor baby."
"Indeed," Nack cleared his throat. "But she's happy now. She had a complete transformation. She dyed her hair, broke her glasses and bought a whole new host of contacts so she basically has a different eye colour each week.
"But this is clearly a hedgehog."
"She also had some plastic surgery done that Isabella paid for," Nack shrugged. "We tried to convince her she didn't need it but she went and did it anyway."
"This is terrible. I need to talk to her."
"And you will," Nack assured him. "She is expecting you. Right this way."
Meanwhile, Mina was chilling in her room with Breezie when she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket.
Nack: I've got everything under control. I'm with your dad now. Go wait out in the library for a bit and I'll get you when everything is done.
"Where are you going?" Breezie asked as she combed her hair. Mina hurriedly threw on her shoes and grabbed her bag.
"Just going to do some study in the library. I'll see you later," Mina replied.
"You sound scared? Is everything alright?" Breezie asked with concern.
"It's fine. Really. I'll tell you about it at dinner tonight, Kay?"
"O – Kay," Breezie was interrupted by the loud slam of her door. "I wonder what's gotten into her today." With a shrug, she dispelled Mina from her mind and focused her attention back on her mirror.
…
Razor was up to his eyeballs in papers. His sudden decision to expel Fiona the night before had brought on an onslaught of things to be sorted, documents to sign and emails to send. Worst of all, he'd already been called by Claire Fox four separate times that morning. He'd already contacted Rob to satiate Claire while he dealt with the school. He couldn't deal with her at this time.
"Razor?" somebody called from the hallway.
"I'm busy," Razor called, but the person ignored him and pushed open the door. "Ash, what do you want? Can't you see I'm dealing with a lot right now."
"Is that all because of Fiona?" Ash asked.
"You have no idea. I didn't really think this one through," Razor sighed.
"That's actually why I'm here," Ash stepped into Razor's office and closed the door slowly behind him. "I just wanted to make sure you know what you're doing. I like my job here and I don't want to see this place be closed down. But expelling Fiona, Claire's daughter, right before the trial… that looks like a declaration of war."
"Fiona was a nasty little girl who didn't deserve a place at this school to begin with," Razor snarled.
"Agreed, but expelling her wasn't wise. If Claire wasn't invested enough as it was this will push her over the edge. She won't just want to win this case anymore. This has become personal. She'll want to erase this place from the map and take you down with it. She won't rest until all of us have paid penance," Ash explained.
"I'm aware, but what could I have done?" Razor put his head in his hands.
"Not expelled Fiona?"
"She's had more strikes than I can count. The amount of physical violence alone would be enough to expel her, but as principal I hear things. I can see how she treats the students. She's manipulative and not the type of student we should accept at this school."
"I thought you ran this school to accept anybody and everybody. For a lot of the students here this is their last chance. They came here to escape their home life or their demons and try to turn themselves around to get an education. Lumina, Void, Nack, Lien-Da, Scourge, Shadow, Mephiles, Julie-Su… the list of students with nowhere else to go or family they want to get away from grows each term. Imagine having Claire Fox as your mother. I'm sure Fiona just wanted to find somewhere safe."
"That may be, but that doesn't give her an excuse to attack my students!" Razor growled.
"Your students, or your daughter?" Ash raised an inquisitive eyebrow. Razor grew rigid and avoided Ash's eye contact.
"I don't know what you mean."
"I think you do. Fiona has done worse, and other students have done worse, but you always give them the benefit of the doubt. You've put students on house arrest, given out detention and tried to find ways to help out students struggling with themselves. It's one of the things I admire about you. But you've never been this emotional with a student, especially one who we need if we are ever going to win this case and save our school," Ash said.
"But…"
"But she attacked Blaze." Razor said nothing. "Just admit it, sir."
"I only just got her in my life," Razor admitted. "I couldn't sit back and let Blaze be attacked by that psychopath. I know I shouldn't have expelled her but she hurt my daughter. Nobody does that. It's too late now. Fiona's gone, and Claire knows what happened. It's okay. I'm doing damage control and this won't hurt our case."
"I this doesn't come back to bite us, not just for your sake but for the sake of this school and our jobs," Ash sighed. "But, sir, if I could offer a little advice. As a history teacher I study the past and it's always sentimentality that brought down the most prominent figures. I know Blaze is your daughter, but don't let Claire use her against you. You need to separate your personal life from your professional life. At the trial this weekend you are the principal first, and Blaze's father second."
"I… I know," Razor nodded finally. "I won't let that cloud my judgement. I promise."
…
Cream paced back and forth around her dorm room staring at her illuminated phone screen. She bit her nails with anxiety. She had nervously chewed them down to the nub. She stopped to look at herself in the mirror and practiced what she was going to say.
"Mother, I'm not going with you to Soleanna," Cream tried, but her tone was weak and her eyes were uncertain. "No, that's no good." She turned away and tried again.
"Mother, I have a life here and I'm not going with you, is that okay?" she tried again. "No, I can't phrase it like a question. Ugh, this is hopeless," Cream sighed as she fell back onto her bed and let the phone fall out of her grip. "I can't do this. I can't deny mum. It just won't end well."
However, as if her mother was listening, Cream's phone started vibrating rapidly and she glanced over at it with uncertainty. It was Vanilla. Cream felt her heart fall in her chest. She couldn't do it. She couldn't talk back to her mother. As she went to grab the phone Blaze's words echoed in her head.
"You're eighteen, Cream. Your mother can't control you any longer. If you put your foot down and really talk to her I'm sure she'll understand."
"Hello?" Cream picked up the phone and answered the call.
"Cream, what were you doing? You took far too long to answer the call. Making people wait is unbecoming of a lady," Vanilla scolded her daughter.
"I'm sorry mother," Cream apologized sheepishly.
"That's alright. I was just calling to ask you what flight works best for you," Vanilla changed the subject.
"You want me to choose?" Cream was taken aback. Her mother always just decided things for her.
"Of course. You're eighteen now, I can't do everything for you. And I do understand that moving away from everything you know will be tough, so I do want you to be able to say goodbye to your friends without having to do it while you study for your exams," Vanilla explained. It was all calculated, naturally, but Cream was surprised that her mother gave her even that much.
"Okay… in that case I don't want a flight at all," Cream said somewhat reservedly. She surprised herself that she'd managed to work up the courage to even deny Vanilla but it wasn't as strong or forceful as she had planned it to be.
"What did you say to me?" Vanilla asked angrily. "Don't play these games with me, Cream. I've given you a choice so don't squander it."
"I'm not, mother. I said I don't want a flight. I'm not going with you to Soleanna." Cream forced down her fear and anxiety and choked out the words. They came out deep and sure. If she wasn't saying them herself she wouldn't have believed it to ever be happening. This was the first time she'd ever said no to her mother, and Vanilla hated it.
"Don't talk back to me young lady. I thought I taught you better than that," Vanilla chided. "If you want to play that game then I'll just book the flights for the day after graduation. You won't have any time to say goodbye to your friends. Is that what you want?"
"No," Cream sighed.
"Good. Now I–"
"I didn't finish," Cream interrupted her mother; another first. "I said no, I don't want that because I don't want to go with you. As you said, I'm eighteen now which means I don't have to go to Soleanna with you. My life is here. My friends are here. Everybody I care about is here and I want to stay with them."
"Are you sure? I won't ask you again. Last chance to change your mind," Vanilla gave her an ultimatum. Cream paused for a moment, but knew she wouldn't change her mind. She loved her mother, and knew Vanilla only wanted what was best for her, but her overbearingness was too much. It had made Cream doubt herself at every turn and for that she had grown impish and scared to push herself. It was time she stood on her own two feet. She jumped off the bed and stood tall, staring at herself with new eyes in the mirror.
"I'm sure, mother," Cream said. "I'm staying here."
"Very well. I guess that is all. Good day, Cream," Vanilla said with an unreadable tone before Cream was met with nothing but a dial tone. Her chest heaved and her head hurt. She wasn't sure if she had made the right choice but there was no turning back now. She looked at herself in the mirror. She had changed so much from the scared girl who didn't believe in herself. Her hair was longer, her face was fuller and her eyes were more determined. At the start of the year all she cared about was what other people thought – Tails, her mother, her friends. Now the only approval she needed was that of herself. It was time to do what she wanted; not what other wanted of her. And she was going to do just that.
Cream typed a name in her phone and held it up to her ear.
"Hello?" Amy's voice blared through.
"Amy, It's Cream. I need your help. There's something I need to do," Cream said.
"Why me?"
"Because… it's about a boy."
…
Captain Shellbreaker followed Nack into the dormitory and paused to study the common room. The couches looked like they had seen better days; the stains were clearly evident, as was the smell. Students lounged around on the furniture and beanbags talking about nothing but as he scanned the room they all stopped to glare at him. They weren't sure who he was but since Nack was showing him around they assumed the worst.
"Who's this, Nacky?" Honey asked as she sauntered up to the two of them and batted her eyelids at Shellbreaker.
"Beat it Honey. I've no time for you right now," Nack shooed her away.
"Nack, that isn't the way to talk to a lady," Shellbreaker chastised him. "I thought you were a prefect. That isn't how one acts."
"Sorry," Nack grumbled through clenched teeth.
"My name is Shellbreaker. Pleased to meet you," he took Honey's hand and placed a kiss on it, his other hand gently pushing up her shirt to expose skin to kiss. His thumb traced along her skin as he retracted his hand. Nack noticed and shuddered.
"And people thought I'm a creep," he muttered under his breath.
"What a gentleman," Honey cooed in her naturally flirtatious way.
"What's somebody as pretty as you still doing at high school? You look to be at least twenty," Shellbreaker commented.
"Oh stop it, you flatter me," Honey pretended to act bashful. "I'm only eighteen, but some do call me mature for my age. Why are you here, Mr. Shellbreaker?"
"I'm here to see my daughter, Mina," Shellbreaker replied. The colour quickly drained from Honey's face as she stumbled backwards.
"M-Mina's dad?" Honey stuttered. She'd heard stories from Mina about her father. Honey wanted nothing to do with this creep. "Sorry, I have to go do… something… somewhere. Bye!"
"That was weird?"
"Don't mind her," Nack ignored Honey. "She's a bit of an air head. C'mon, Mina is waiting for you in her room. Follow me." Nack led Shellbreaker up to the first floor and opened room one hundred and five. The room was empty except for Breezie who was still doing her hair in the mirror.
"And there she is!" Nack announced as he pushed opened the door and signaled to the hedgehog.
"Nack, what the hell are you doing here? Breezie announced angrily, standing up. "And how did you unlock the door."
"Master key," Nack spun it around his index finger before pocketing it. "As a prefect Razor gave me it."
"Prefect, ha, fat chance," Breezie scoffed. "I bet you blackmailed Razor into getting it knowing you." Shellbreaker cleared his throat.
"Regardless, Mina, I'd like to re-introduce you to Shellbreaker Otter, as per Razor's instructions," Nack announced.
"Mina? Shellbreaker? What?" Breezie was confused.
"Oh, my sweet Mina, you look so different," Shellbreaker said as he took a step closer. "I'm sorry about how those kids treated you, but you didn't have to have all this surgery to make yourself look prettier. I still love you just the way you are."
"Nack, what the fuck is going on here? Why does he think I'm Mina?"
"Sorry Mina, but I've got to go. I'll leave you with your father," Nack winked as he saw the realization and horror collide together in Breezie's eyes. He smirked as he closed the door and locked her inside.
"Mina, darling, it's been so long," Shellbreaker took another step closer. Breezie was cornered.
"Look, Shellbreaker, I don't know what lies that bastard has fed you but I'm not Mina. My name is Breezie. Breezie the Hedgehog. Look at me. I'm not even a mongoose!" Breezie argued but she could tell by the look in Shellbreaker's eyes that he didn't care.
"Mina, don't worry Nack told me about what happened and what you did. I'm sorry I wasn't here to help you through everything. But look at you… even through all this you still look like your mother," Shellbreaker swallowed the lump in his throat. Breezie felt vulnerable, like he was penetrating her with his gaze. It felt horrible.
"Sorry, I've got to go. I've got things to do, but I can get Principal Razor to–"
"You're still my little girl, right darling?" Shellbreaker asked, cutting off Breezie's escape. As she tried to dance around him he threw out his arm to stop her in her tracks. Breezie felt trapped.
"I'm not Mina."
"It's okay. I know it's been a while and I know your mother has put some horrible thoughts into your head but I'm here now. It's okay," Shellbreaker ignored Breezie's pleas and placed a hand on her shoulder. His fingers gripped into her flesh and she winced in pain. He snaked a hand around her waist and pulled her into him. He placed his nose in her hair and breathed in deeply. "You still smell like I remember. Now, tell me again, you're still my little girl, right?" He squeezed tighter when Breezie didn't answer.
"I-I…" Breezie croaked. She choked back the tears. He was suffocating her. She was beyond frightened, but didn't know what to do. She was scared that if she angered him at all then he'd do something worse. She couldn't fathom how Mina dealt with this on a daily basis when she was younger.
"Are you still my little girl?"
"Yes," Breezie sniffed as the tears began to cascade down her cheeks.
"Good."
…
Eclipse tapped the table impatiently as he waited for his date to arrive. He wasn't so sure this was such a good idea and as the time ticked on he began to get nervous. The time they were supposed to meet came and went and she still hadn't arrived. Five minutes passed. Ten minutes passed. Finally, just when Eclipse was about to call it a day and go back to his dorm to get some study in the bell adorning the top of the glass door to the café jingled and Wave stepped into the inviting coffee shop.
"Sorry I'm late," Wave apologized as she walked over to the table. "I got caught up helping Sonia out with something."
"Oh, are you close with Sonia?" Eclipse asked politely.
"Yeah, we've grown inseparable this year. She's really had my back. Are you guys good friends?" Wave asked.
"Not really," Eclipse admitted.
"Okay then," Wave said uncomfortably as she took a seat. The two sat in silence for a few minutes. The awkwardness engulfed them like a thick fog, suffocating any conversation before it had even begun.
"So, this is pretty weird, isn't it?" Eclipse laughed meekly.
"Yeah, it is. I've never been on a blind date before."
"It's not really blind, though. We know each other. We're in some of the same classes."
"I guess that's true," Wave admitted. "We've never really talked, though. You were always hanging out with your girlfriend. Or, I guess, ex-girlfriend. Sorry, I didn't mean to bring that up."
"It's cool. I'm over it," Eclipse lied.
"Were you and Tikal together long?"
"For a lot of the year, yeah. I met her the first day she came here because of the fire."
"Did you guys–"
"Sorry, but could we talk about something else other than Tikal?" Eclipse interrupted in frustration.
"Right, sorry, I didn't mean to keep bringing her up," Wave apologized. He was clearly not over her.
"No, don't be. I just… me and her are in the past and I don't want that putting a damper on today. It's awkward enough as it is," he laughed.
"You can say that again," Wave agreed. "I can't believe I let Jet talk me into this."
"Me too. But he told me he knew of a cool chick and told me to give you a chance."
"He called me a cool chick? Wow, what high praise," Wave chuckled.
"Well, what did he call me? How did he convince you?" Eclipse asked.
"He just told me he made a new friend who he thought would be perfect for me. I don't know why, but maybe we have a lot in common that we just haven't discovered yet."
"Maybe." The conversation descended back into silence.
"So," Wave broke it. "Have you been friends with Jet for long?"
"Nah, not really. Like, I've known him since he came here, like everybody in our grade knows each other, but I never really got to know him until literally last week. What about you? Have you been friends since he came here?"
"It's a bit more complicated than that. We've actually been friends since we were in primary school. We only just really reconnected since he came back here."
"Oh… well that's cool that you found each other again. Was it weird seeing him again?"
"You have no idea," Wave sighed. "Honestly, we had only just shared our first kiss before I had to leave."
"Oh… Do you still have feelings for him?"
"I don't wanna think about it," Wave admitted. "When he came back into my life he was dating Cream, who coincidently is now one of my best friends, but I really fucked that relationship up. Then he started dating Cosmo, another one of my best friends, and they are so perfect for each other so I don't even bother thinking about it."
"That's an incestuous group," Eclipse laughed.
"You have no idea. Sonia is the other one in our little group, and you know the whole story about her pregnancy and wedding and questionable father," Wave said.
"You want to talk about group drama? You have no idea how crazy my group is."
"Worse than having one guy who's gotten with three of the four girls, and the only girl he hasn't gotten with is pregnant at age seventeen?"
"Well, when you say it that way maybe not. But, my group has Tikal, obviously, and Clove Ray and Mighty."
"Shit, I heard about what happened between them and how Clove got that abortion. Amy really can't keep her mouth shut."
"Yeah. You know how Mighty was dating Clove until he broke up with her and then Ray started dating her and Mighty tried to break them up and then Clove aborted Mighty's child and then Ray found out. Meanwhile Tikal and I just coasted by until she dumped me."
"Okay, you win for most incestuous, dysfunctional group," Wave laughed.
"I don't think that's a good thing, but I'll take it," Eclipse joined her laughter. "But I don't think either one of us can hold a candle to that group that had Sonic, Tails, Shadow, Knuckles, Rouge, Blaze, Silver, Espio and all of them. Tikal told me all about the shit that went down with those guys over the past year when she was in the thick of it."
"Yeah Jet and Cream used to be apart of that big group. That sounded crazy. I feel like if I was in that group I'd have killed everybody by now." The two let out another chorus of laughs and smiled at each other. Finally conversation flowed freely.
"So, since we're at a café can I buy you a coffee?" Eclipse offered.
"That would be great," Wave smiled. "I'll take a soy latte please."
"Coming right up," Eclipse stood and walked over to get their coffee as Wave pulled out her phone and read a text Jet had sent her.
Jet: So, how's it going? Do you love him yet or what?
Wave: Alright, he's pretty cool
Jet: Ha! I knew it! Just you wait. Before you know it you and him will get together and then you guys can go on a double date with me and Cosmo
Wave sighed, her features dropping as she read those last three words. She needed to get him out of her head once and for all. She thought she had, but recently it was like old feelings had been flooding back. They were just good mates and nothing more. He was Cosmo's girlfriend, and things between the two of them just wouldn't work out. She knew that. They were destined to be friends and nothing more. She had to give Eclipse a try, if not for Jet than for herself.
Wave: We'll see. He's coming back with the coffee. I've got to go. Laters
"Here you go. One soy latte," Eclipse grinned as he placed it in front of her. "So, what kind of things are you into?"
Their conversation continued without pause. The words just seemed to flow without thought and it was like they had known each other for ages. They talked about their favourite shows, movies, music and hobbies. They realized they had a lot more in common than they'd have thought. Eventually Eclipse noticed the time and swore under his breath. It had been three hours.
"Shoot. I promised I'd meet Ray in the library to study at twelve-thirty," Eclipse said. "We need to do some extra physics practice."
"Physics? I'm struggling hard core. Mind if I tag along and join the study session?" Wave asked.
"I don't see why not? C'mon, we'll swing by the dorms on the way so we can get our stuff."
"Awesome, thanks a lot, Eclipse," Wave gave him a kiss on the cheek. Eclipse blushed. He didn't really care what Ray thought; he just wanted an excuse to spend more time with Wave. Jet was right, he really did just need to move on from heartbreak, and Wave was the perfect cure.
…
The forest was calm and serene. A gentle breeze whipped through the treetops and rustled the leaves above their heads. The dew tipped blades of grass danced with the wind in the small alcove. Blaze and Sonic stood on the edge holding hands.
"This is it," Sonic admitted as he gestured to an old hollowed out tree stump. He let go of Blaze's hand and pushed her forward. She hesitantly walked over and peered inside the middle of the stump. It was just a bunch of old leaves and twigs.
"What's this?" Blaze asked in confusion. Sonic let out a long sigh before he bent down and grabbed a fist full of leaves and tossed them aside, revealing the bag of heroin hidden underneath, along with needles and old cut-off pieces of a rubber hose.
"It's time I told you the truth, and I'll understand if you hate me now but I can't lie to you any longer," Sonic began. "It's my stash of heroine."
"I thought you told me you got rid of it all," Blaze said.
"I know I did, but I lied. I hid it here just in case. I couldn't bring myself to destroy it. Fiona gave me more and there was a little voice inside me that told me to keep it," Sonic hung his head in shame. "I swear I never used any of it since you helped me detox."
"I know."
"And I promise I… wait, what?" Sonic furrowed his brow.
"I said I know," Blaze repeated. "Fiona told me that you didn't get rid of it a couple weeks ago and she showed me to this exact spot."
"Y-you knew? Why didn't you say anything, or get mad at me?"
"I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt," Blaze shrugged. "I knew if I came at you in an accusatory matter it wouldn't help anything, and might even push you back to using it. If you really want to get over this addiction you need to do it yourself. And the fact that you've now told me about this shows me that you do trust me."
"Of course I do."
"I come here every couple of days to check on how much heroin there is, just to make sure you weren't still doing it."
"I'm not, I swear. Not even on Halloween," Sonic said.
"I know. There's the exact same amount as when Fiona first showed me this place. That's why I never came to you. I figured you couldn't quite get rid of it completely, but as long as you weren't relapsing I was going to keep quiet until you felt comfortable telling me about it."
"And you don't hate me?"
"Of course not. You never lied to me."
"But I told you I got rid of all my heroin."
"And, in a way, this is getting rid of it," Blaze smiled.
"How did I end up finding somebody as amazing as you?" Sonic smiled as she combed some lose strands of hair out of her eye. Her hair had been growing longer and longer. It was impossible to tell that she had ever been caught in a fire months prior.
"C'mon, I'm not that special. There's something wrong with me," Blaze cast her eyes downward.
"That's ridiculous," Sonic scoffed.
"No, it's true. You had an addiction, but you fought through it. You lost your best friend, but you fought through it. You had a fucked up family situation but you fought through it. You're amazing, but I've got so many problems."
"Hey, hey, hey, where is this coming from?" Sonic asked in concern. "You are amazing, Blaze. You also had a fucked up family situation – I mean you only just met your own father at age eighteen – but you fought through that. You were caught in a fire and almost died but you fought through that. And you lost one of your best friends too."
"But I've got something inside me. Some darkness that wants to escape. I'd never felt it so fully then when Fiona confronted me last night. I've never wanted to hurt somebody before but in that moment I let it consume me. I wanted to hurt her, Sonic. I wanted to really, really hurt her," Blaze admitted in a shaky tone, the fear in her voice was palpable.
"But you didn't," Sonic put a hand on her cheek and gently stroked her hair, raising her head to look at him. "Even though you wanted to, and you had every right to, you fought back against that feeling. You control your own darkness, Blaze, it doesn't control you. You proved last night that it is powerless."
"It was only because of you," Blaze smiled.
"And it's because of you that I don't want to let heroin control me," Sonic replied. "You make me stronger."
"So do you. I love you, Sonic." It was the first time Blaze had properly said that to him, and his eyes showed his surprise and happiness.
"And I love you, more than you could possible know." Sonic pulled her close and crashed his lips against hers in a passionate display. As their tongues wrestled, the two necklaces they wore around their neck clinked together in a collision of amethyst and silver: heart and star.
…
Silver couldn't get the events that transpired last night out of his head. His heart and his head, again, were caught in another war. He was sure his heart had won out but after talking with Scourge and then watching Fiona's break down his head had gained the advantage.
He couldn't be with Fiona. Scourge was right. She was bitter down to the core of her being. She could never change. Despite how she tried to change it was all a façade. He saw that last night when she called out everybody. And yet, when she turned to him there was something in her eyes. Something it seemed nobody else but he could see.
Silver wasn't sure. He knew who Fiona was, and he knew all the horrible things she had done but when they were alone together she was different. She wasn't cruel of angry, but gentle and vulnerable. She was just a frightened little girl living in her mother's shadow. Silver knew there was good inside her. Everybody told him Scourge was a lost cause but he found something. Everybody says Fiona is a lost cause, but Silver knew he could find something in her too.
With new determination he sprung to action, sprinting to Fiona's dorm room. He knew she had until three to be off the premises so if he hurried he could catch her while she was packing. Silver was out of breath by the time he got to their dorm room but when he knocked on the door Sally was the one to open it.
"Silver, what's wrong?" Sally asked.
"Is Fiona here?" Silver panted.
"She got expelled, remember? Besides, why would you want to see her anyway," Sally scoffed as she rolled her eyes. She had zero sympathy for that fox.
"I just need to see her before she leaves."
"Look, whatever she did to you just let her go. We've already all won."
"No, it's more than that. I can't explain just, please, where is she?" Silver begged.
"She left a few minutes ago after she finished packing," Sally explained. "If you really want to go rub it in before she leaves to get that last bit of satisfaction you could probably catch her before her mother picks her up in the parking lot. But–" Before Sally could even finish her sentence Silver had sprinted away. Sally shrugged and closed the door.
Silver could feel his lungs tightening as he bounded down the stairs four at a time and leapt out into the gardens. He didn't stop until his feet was pounding against the cement pavement of the parking lot. He scanned the area feverishly but felt his heart sink in his chest when he saw the bumper of Claire's car roar through the main gate and out onto the highway. He was too late and he missed her.
Silver quickly pulled out his phone and tried to contact her on social media, but she'd blocked him on all platforms. He couldn't ring her either. He'd broken her heart, and she wasn't one to forgive easily. Silver knew he fucked up. He took too long to make up his mind, he didn't have her back when she was at her lowest, and now she'll never know how he felt. Silver sighed as he looked skywards. Only one thought ran through his head as he walked back to his dorm.
This was probably for the best.
…
"Espio Chameleon," Claire announced as she stormed into one of the library study pods on the second floor of the building.
"Who are you?" Espio questioned as the strange, older woman barged into the room. "I have this pod booked until three."
"You don't know who I am?" Claire pursed her lips. "I'm disappointed my reputation doesn't proceed me." Espio studied her for a moment before it clicked. Her tone, her body language, her face and, most importantly, those cold calculating eyes. It was unmistakable.
"Claire Fox," Espio grunted. Claire's mouth twitched into a menacing smile.
"There we go. I hear you and my little Fionnula go way, way back."
"You could say that," Espio replied, guarded.
"Look, I don't have long. I'm just here to pick her up since she was unfairly expelled," Claire added bitterly. "But I need to have a friendly little chat with you before I go."
"Why me?"
"Well, it's not just about you. It's about Gold Tenrec." Claire's eyes lit up when she saw the dread and realization cross Espio's face. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"I have no idea who you're talking about."
"That's just a bold faced lie. She was your secretary, was she not?"
"I meant, like, I knew her, but not personally," Espio backtracked.
"Really? Even though she was your chaperone to two school hosted events, where we have several eyewitnesses saying they saw the two of you talking together. Not only that but she accompanied you when you toured around the country over the mid-year break?" Claire set the bait.
"She was there as per Razor's instructions and nothing more," Espio lied.
"Really? And yet when talking to Razor he had no idea you went on that trip until after you returned. And he reprimanded you for how unprofessional it seemed," Claire added.
"What's your point?"
"My point is I've done some digging. I've interviewed some people who told me they saw you and Ms. Tenrec kissing. That is a serious offense. I'd hate to see Gold get dragged into this."
"Whatever Sticks told you, she's just a freaky fan who lies!" Espio bellowed.
"Sticks? Interesting, I didn't know about any girl named Sticks. I'll have to follow that up," Claire grinned. Espio palmed his face.
"So what? All you have is rumours then?"
"You could say that. Or, you could say I have these," Claire fished through her bag and pulled out a couple photos – the same photos that Sticks took of Espio and Gold kissing backstage at his concert.
"How did you get them?" Espio complained as he tried to steal them from Claire, but she was too quick for him.
"Fiona wasn't very happy about being expelled. And, honestly, I don't think she liked that song you made about her very much. She showed me these photos."
"Of course she did," Espio grit her teeth.
"Now, I'll make you a deal. Rob is using you to prove how the school can shape the lives of their students into successful people, like musicians. However, when he calls you to the stand I want you instead to tell tales of the horrible secrets that go on between the students at this school. Explain how toxic the community is and how it could lead to depression and death, just like it did to Amadeus' son."
"No! I won't testify against my school. I love this place," Espio argued.
"Suit yourself. But if you don't testify against the school then I might have to submit this evidence. The truth always has a way of getting out, Mr. Chameleon. If you want to protect Gold then do as I say. Or else," Claire warned with a gruff voice before she perked back up with a fake smile. "Good day." As she left, Espio slammed his head against the desk.
Bean gasped, covering his mouth as he quickly hid behind a bookshelf as Claire made her exit. He was just coming to meet Espio to study when he noticed somebody else in there with him. He couldn't believe his ears. Espio was with Gold? It couldn't be.
…
To say Mina was nervous would be an understatement. She had chewed her nails down to the nub as she anxiously waited for news. She didn't know what to expect. All she knew was that Nack said he'd take care of everything and that she needed to wait in the library until he called her. She had stationed herself in one of the study pods on the second floor – Espio had already booked the one that she wanted to use – when Honey tapped on the plexiglass.
"Honey? What are you doing here?" Mina asked.
"Mina, girl, I hate to be the one to tell you this but your dad is here," Honey blurted out. "You need to do something, Nack's already gotten to him."
"It's cool. Nack is doing me a favour," Mina explained.
"I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him, which isn't very far."
"I don't either, but we made a deal and I upheld my end of the bargain."
"Are you sure he's good for his word? He's a slimy guy, Mina, I know him pretty well now. Last I saw him he was showing your dad to your room and I heard him say you were waiting for him in there," Honey said.
"That makes no sense. Nack told me to wait in the library so he couldn't get me," Mina scratched her head.
"That's why I ran to get you when I saw your name on the booking sheet for the pod. If Nack knows you're here then what are they doing in your room?"
"It doesn't matter because–" Mina cut herself off when she realized what was happening. There was only one other person in their dorm when she left – Breezie!
"You alright? You look like you've seen a ghost," Honey mentioned.
"Breezie," Mina gaped. "I remember she told me that her and Nack used to be family friends until she royally pissed him off. What if he… Sorry Honey I've gotta go," Mina pushed passed the confused cheerleader and sprinted down the library steps. She called Nack as she ran.
"Mina, what's up?" Nack answered nonchalantly.
"What are you up to?" Mina accused.
"Chill out. I've got everything under control like I promised. Just stay put and everything will be over soon enough," Nack responded.
"What are you doing to Breezie?"
"Oh, you figured it out?"
"I don't want this, Nack. Leave her out of this. That wasn't part of our deal."
"Our deal was for me to deal with your little Shellbreaker problem and make sure he gets his fill and leaves without you ever having to see him. That's exactly what I'm doing."
"Tell me what you're doing. Now," Mina demanded. "Where are you?"
"I'm on my way to Razor's office. Once he sees what Shellbreaker is doing to a student he'll be arrested, or at least be put in a compromising position and any judge worth a grain of salt will annul those custody forms," Nack explained.
"But you can't do that to Breezie. She's my best friend."
"Look," Nack's tone turned sour. "I promised to help you out but if you don't want my help anymore that's fine. I've already gotten what I want from you. But you stay out of my business with Breezie. That doesn't concern you."
"I don't want this. Go back and fix this."
"Mina, if that's what you want then I can. But that means I'll have to show Shellbreaker right to you and you can deal with him head on. It's either you or Breezie."
"I… I…" Mina stuttered. She felt her chest grow tight and her breaths drew shallow. Just the thought of facing her father again made her skin grow clammy and sweat bead on her brow. She couldn't face him. Not after everything. The room around her began to spin and colour drained from her vision.
"That's what I thought," Nack said as he hung up the phone and all Mina could hear was a long beep.
"B-Breezie," Mina whispered to herself as she gripped one of the bookshelves to steady herself. A wave of nausea rocked her. She couldn't face her father. But she couldn't let Breezie take the brunt of him, could she? If she just pretended that she never figured out what Nack's plan was then she could console Breezie later and never have to see her father again. Razor would stumble upon him and kick him out. Everything would end well.
Except for Breezie. She couldn't do that to her. Mina knew deep down she couldn't live with herself if she let Breezie deal with her father. It was her trauma to bear, and it was unfair to give it off to Breezie like a disease. She clenched her fists tight, pushed off the bookshelf to stand on her own two feet and with a determined grunt she stomped out of the library. She had to save her best friend before it was too late.
…
Mighty was sitting at one of the many tables in the cafeteria crunching down on a crisp pink lady apple. His head was resting in his other hand as he absentmindedly chewed and let his mind wander. He thought he had moved forward and promised himself he wouldn't look back to the past but it became increasingly hard each day as his thoughts betrayed him and continued to think about Ray. It didn't make it easier that he still had to see his former best friend every day.
He thought he had turned a corner but after the knowledge of Clove aborting his baby was dropped on him he had been thrust back into his old group of friends that he desperately clawed his way away from after they all turned their back on him and he hit his rock bottom. Today, unfortunately, was another day where he was brought back into the fray…
"Mighty," an instantly recognizable voice perked up from behind him. Mighty tensed up and his shoulders went rigid. He swallowed his piece of food and sighed inwardly as he put on his best smile and cheery tone.
"Tikal," Mighty beamed as best he could. "How have you been?"
"Not great, honestly. Yourself?" Tikal replied.
"Better than I used to be."
"Yeah… sorry about everything," Tikal rubbed the back of her neck. "Look, I can tell you don't' want to talk to me right now and I know you're just pretending to be happy so if you don't want me around I'll just go," she offered.
"Awesome," the smile ran away from his face and his eyes drooped. "Thanks for understanding. Bye."
"Wait, really?"
"What? You said you'll go if I don't want you around. Bye," Mighty waved.
"Wow, rude," Tikal scoffed. "I was just trying to be polite."
"No, I was just trying to be polite. You just pretended to be a close friend and then stabbed me in the back and cut me out of your life."
"Well, when you put it that way… I'm sorry, Mighty. I didn't mean to treat you that way. I really was on your side and I didn't mean to completely give you the cold shoulder but I was on your side."
"No. You weren't. You pretended to be to my face to get me to open up but Blaze was at your table. She told me about all the horrible shit you said about me and how you laughed at my expense. You turned away from me when I needed you. If you didn't want to be my friend because you didn't like me then fair enough, but don't act so two-faced next time," Mighty spat with unusual malice.
"Why don't you tell me how you really feel," Tikal rolled her eyes.
"You don't want me to. I promise you," Mighty scowled. "I've heard what you've been doing; going around to everybody and apologizing for shit you did in the past. I don't know what you're going to do or what you've got yourself into but frankly I don't care. We aren't friends. Not anymore. You had your chance and you blew it."
"But weren't you the one that always said that forgiveness is the most important thing?"
"Nope, not me. I'm not one to forgive easily," Mighty said. "But, despite everything I do forgive you. You chose a side. You went about it the wrong way by pretending to be my friend but I can't fault you for not picking my side. That doesn't mean you can come back and we can just be friends again."
"But you forgive me, right?"
"Yeah, but I can't just forget. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me several times and I'm just being idiotic. Sorry Tikal, but I don't want to be your friend or be apart of your life. Goodbye," Mighty said. Without another word he stood up and tried to leave but Tikal called out his name and stopped him in his tracks.
"Mighty, wait!"
"What?"
"I'm sorry. Really, I am. For everything," Tikal said.
"I'm sorry, too," Mighty sighed before exiting the cafeteria.
…
Life had been hell for Lien-Da for almost as long as she could remember; all stirred on by the feverish swallow and that irksome smirk adorning her infuriating face. Hatred was an understatement. Hatred was a word too lenient to describe the way Lien truly felt. Wave had taken everything from her. Was it really her fault? It didn't matter. Not to Lien-Da. She stole her childhood, her happiness, her innocence, her life and, now, the one person she ever truly loved. Wave was not going to get away with this.
Lien stormed up the stairs, her elbow crunching Honey's ribs as she brushed past the cheerleader while ascending.
"What the fuck was that for?" Honey called out but she was greeted with only Lien's extended little finger. "Freak," Honey muttered under her breath as she shook her head. Lien grunted. She didn't have time to fake niceties. She had blood on her mind. She didn't stop her until she'd arrived at the offenders door. Knuckles rattled against wood as Lien waited for an answer.
"Hello, how can I–" Wave answered the door happily before her eyes shot open with fear as Lien pushed open the door and shoved Wave backwards.
"You're a dead woman!" Lien warned.
"L-Lien," Wave stuttered. "What are you doing here?"
"Scourge isn't around to protect you anymore." Wave could almost see the flames in her eyes, fanned by blinding hatred.
"Please, Lien, let's talk about this," Wave backed up slowly until her back was pressed up against the wall.
"You've taken everything from me!"
"It wasn't my fault. I never did anything."
"You did everything."
"But Lara–"
"Don't you dare speak her name," spittle flew from the furious echidna's mouth as she glared daggers.
"Just let me explain," Wave begged, her eyes scanned the room in futile attempt.
"No more talk. I'm here to finish this. My childhood was hell. My mother beat me and my father ran. All because of you." Lien clenched her fist and readied her blow. Wave's eyes flew open, fear coated her pupils. She knew what was coming, but she couldn't think of how to stop it. Only one thing came to mind.
"I know what happened. Lara told me everything," the words trickled out of Wave's mouth before she realized she even said them.
Time seemed to slow down. Wave studied Lien-Da's eyes. A chaotic storm of pain, anger, sadness, betrayal and regret buffeted together in her whites. Her arm faltered and dropped slightly, but still she shot it out in front of her. Wave didn't know what happened next; her instincts took over. Her arm shot up and her palm met Lien's fist and neutralized it. Surprised, Lien threw another punch but Wave mirrored and suddenly Lien was at her mercy as she held both of Lien's fists in her hands. Wave didn't know what had come over her. Was it fear? Mercy? Pity? She did not know.
"It wasn't my fault," Wave said. She was sick of running. It was time she stood up for herself. Lien fought back uselessly. She thrashed and kicked but Wave stood steadfast as she bent Lien's wrists back until she howled out in pain. Wave push Lien down until she fell to her knees. She looked up at Wave's towering figure above her and, for a second, Wave's form contorted into that of Lien's mother. "Don't blame me or my parents for the actions of your shitty parents."
"M-mother?" Lien whimpered. Wave's brows furrowed, but all Lien saw was her mother's piercing, immobilizing glare. Before Lien could stop herself tears sprung from her eyes and trickled down the contours of her lined, tired face.
"Lien are you… crying?" Wave asked. The words broke Lien's trance and her mother's image faded. She looked at Wave above her and saw the pity. She couldn't take it any longer. She wrenched herself free from Wave and jumped off the floor. The door slammed shut behind Lien's disappearing figure as Wave stood and breathed a sigh of relief. But she knew, deep, deep down, that this wasn't quite over just yet. There was one last thing she had to do.
…
Heartbeats thumped loudly in her brain as her steps thundered on the pavement. Sweat beaded on her forehead and butterflies danced in her stomach, knotting her nerves. A panic attack was inevitable, but Mina fought off the oncoming nausea as she raced towards her dorm room. She didn't know what she was going to do or how she was going to face her father but she knew she needed to help her best friend. Breezie needed her.
The minutes flew by as she jumped up three steps at a time until she made it to her door and threw open the slab of wood. Three pairs of eyes flicked to her panting figure in the doorway. Shellbreaker, her disgusting father, Breezie, her panicked friend, and, surprisingly…
"Mephiles?" Mina questioned.
"Mina?" Breezie gasped, eyes filled with fear.
"Mina?" Shellbreaker's brow furrowed as he turned from the girl whose shoulder he was crushing beneath his fingers over to his daughter in the doorway. Their eyes met. Instantly Shellbreaker knew he'd been tricked. Those eyes and that face; he knew that was his daughter. "My little girl," Shellbreaker soothed. Vomit exploded from Mina's mouth as she doubled over herself and emptied the contents of her stomach onto the floor.
Breezie took this moment of confusion to rip herself away from Shellbreaker and rushed over to her best friends side. Shellbreaker grumbled and got set to follow but Mephiles stood protectively in front of them.
"As I've been saying, Mr. Otter, that isn't your daughter," Mephiles continued his previous conversation without a hint of emotion in his voice.
"I can see that," Shellbreaker snapped. "What I don't understand is why that weasel tricked me."
"Isn't it obvious?" Mephiles asked. "Despite her better judgement," he flicked her a sidelong glance, "Mina clearly enlisted Nack's help to make sure you don't get custody of her."
"You did this?" Breezie asked, her heart breaking.
"I didn't know this is what he had in mind, I swear," Mina pleaded. "He just said he could help me and I was desperate enough to believe him. He made me…" Mina trailed off, unable to relive the memory as tears threatened the corners of her eyes.
"It's okay. I believe you," Breezie draped an arm around her shoulders. "C'mon, let's get you cleaned up."
"You aren't going anywhere," Shellbreaker threatened deeply. "You're my daughter and I have the papers to prove it. I came here to collect you. You're coming back home with me. Do I make myself clear?"
"I… I…" Mina froze in fear, trapped in memories of the past.
"You don't have to go with him," Breezie urged.
"C'mon, Mina, let's go," Shellbreaker instructed. Like a ghost unable to control her body, Mina rose to her shaky legs and began walking towards him.
"Mina…"
"I didn't want it to have to come to this," Mephiles sighed. "Shellbreaker. I'm an agent of the G.U.N and I have the connections and resources to hunt you down and stop you."
"Why should I believe you?" Shellbreaker snarled.
"Because if you don't then you'll wish you never came to this school and wish you never met me. That I can promise," Mephiles threatened, narrowing his eyes. Shellbreaker met his challenge.
"I'm not scared of you." Mephiles shook his head.
"So be it." Before Shellbreaker could react Mephiles rushed him. He grabbed Shellbreaker's arm and squeezed his wrist. Fingers stretched out and Mephiles scraped them across his own face in three deep gashes. Mephiles' blood dripped from Shellbreaker's nails. Confused and startled, Shellbreaker gripped Mephiles by the scruff of his shirt and threw him at the wall. Mephiles used the force to send his body crashing painfully at the wall, bruising his nose. Mephiles raised his fist and sent it flying across his jaw before kicking himself in the ankle. He spat out some blood as he fell to the floor. Mina and Breezie gasped.
"What the fuck is wrong with you, kid?" Shellbreaker asked as he watched the display.
"I told you that you'd wish never coming here," Mephiles smirked as he burst into tears. At that moment Nack rushed into the room with Razor on his tail.
"Quick, quick, principal Razor. It's happening in here and…" Nack trailed off as he tried to make sense of what was happening. He saw Breezie still kneeling next to Mina's vomit. Mina standing vulnerably in the corner of the room. Shellbreaker with his hands by his sides, Mephiles' blood still dripping from his nails and Mephiles crumpled in the corner.
"What in the hell is going on here?" Razor growled.
"P-P-Principal," Mephiles gurgled blood and sobbed melodramatically. "Thank Chaos you're here. It was horrible. I was walking by when I saw Shellbreaker making inappropriate advances on Breezie and Mina. He was groping them and made Mina sick. I tried to stop him but he slashed at my face and beat me up to silence me. Please, help," Mephiles cried.
"That's ridiculous," Shellbreaker barked. "You can't believe this dribble."
"Shellbreaker, come with me. I think we should let the police sort this out," Razor said sternly as the overwhelming evidence pointed to Mephiles' story proving true.
"But… but…" Shellbreaker thought quick. "Mina. Yes, Mina, tell him what really happened. Tell him that Mephiles did this to himself. You're still on my side, right?" Shellbreaker urged as his eyes met with Mina's again. She felt the familiar wave of anxiety and fear crash over her. She wanted to fight back but he still had this arresting hold over her. She went to speak but no words came out. "You're my little girl, right?"
"It's true," Mina forced the words out of her mouth, breaking his hold over her. "Mephiles was trying to help."
"He sexually abused us and beat him up," Breezie added.
"Mina? How could you say that?"
"Enough, Shellbreaker, you're coming with me right now," Razor seized the man's wrist and led him out of the room and down to his office.
"All's well that ends well, right?" Nack feigned a laugh at the doorway but received only three angry stares in reply.
"Get out," Breezie snarled viciously.
"I did what I said I would, right Mina?"
"Give up, Nack," Mephiles said. "Just go."
"I want to hear it from Mina," Nack grinned.
"Leave," Mina forced.
"Fine," Nack grumbled. "But don't forget that I did this to help you," he concluded before storming away. Finally, when the three of them were alone, Mina allowed herself to collapse to her knees and cry. Breezie and Mephiles rushed to her side.
"It's okay. They're all gone," Breezie soothed.
"I'm so, so sorry you guys. This is all my fault," Mina sniffed. "I was just so scared. I didn't want either of you to get hurt."
"I did it to help, like I said I would," Mephiles smiled through red teeth.
"Thanks for everything, Mephiles. I don't know what we would have done without you," Breezie thanked him.
"This isn't over yet," Mephiles snorted. "I think it's time Karma finally caught up to Nack."

Manic sat underneath the slowly rotting wooden bench underneath the grand tree at the far end of the paved parking lot flipping through pages of his Chemistry textbook. His eyes scanned the words and glossed over the images but took in no information. Manic had too many other things on his mind. It wasn't until the sun began to descend and bath the school in deep orange hues did the familiar car splutter up from the road and loudly screech to a halt in-between the white lines.
"I got your voicemail," Mari-Su said as she stepped out of her blue car, grey and blue scarf wrapped tightly around her bony neck. "I'm not sure I should be here."
"I wanted to talk to you before you headed back to the city one last time," Manic replied.
"But you heard what Julie said."
"I don't care what she said, and neither should you," Manic said forcefully. "She's hurting and she can't see what you're trying to do. If you want to ever have a relationship with your daughter then you can't just give up and go home. You have to prove to her that you care."
"I guess."
"You'll need to do better than that. Do you want a relationship with her?" Manic repeated.
"Yes!" Mari-Su said with determination in her eyes. "I do."
"Good. This Saturday we're all going to the main courthouse in the city to sit in on our school's trial. If you really care then you won't steal those gems and instead you'll come see us at the trial. We'll be waiting on the steps after the first day," Manic explained. Mari faltered, eyes flicking everywhere but at Manic.
"Th-this Saturday?"
"Will that be a problem?" Mari paused for a second and seemed to mull something over but shook her thoughts away.
"No, it won't. I'll be there. Let Julie know."
"I will."
"Thanks again, Manic, I won't forget this," Mari smiled a genuine, warm smile, to which Manic offered one of his own in response.

Espio lay on his bed lazily with crossed legs. A melodic tune drifted out of his mouth as he strummed a melancholy tune on his guitar. It was nothing special; just a few notes combined together. His mind was elsewhere. He always liked to play music when he was deep in thought.
Espio had many things to think about these days. Mainly Sonia, particularly his feelings for her, his unborn child, and her relationship with Knuckles. He also had Bean to think about, and what life could have looked like with him. But not now. He pushed those thoughts aside. Now, surprisingly, his talk with Bean only drew his thoughts to one person. Ray.
He hadn't spoken to Ray since they ran into each other on Halloween when he found out about how Ray's father had treated him. He thought about how hard that must have been for the squirrel. He knew how Ray coped, though. It was Mighty. He could tell the minute he came to this campus and saw the two of them together that there was something different between those two. It reminded him of his friendship with Bean. And, just like him and Bean, he watched as Mighty and Ray's friendship imploded on itself because of a girl and an outside force pulling them apart. He cursed Tikal inwardly. He heard everything from Mighty – the poor guy.
Espio wanted to do something. He had a second chance rekindling a dead friendship with Bean. He had to wait three years for that. Ray and Mighty mightn't have three years. They might never speak after graduation. It was now or never. Espio gingerly placed his guitar on the ground and fished out his phone, dialing Ray's number. After a few beeps a voice responded.
"Hello?" Ray's upbeat tone emanated through the speaker.
"Yo, Ray, it's Espio. How have you been?" Espio spoke cheerily.
"Oh, hey Es, I've been alright considering," Ray tried to match Espio's tone but confusion and intrigue slipped through the nicety. "Sorry to ask, but why are you calling me?"
"Just wanted to chat," Espio shrugged.
"It's not that I don't like chatting, but since when have you ever called just to chat? Clearly there's something you wanted to say."
"Not really. Just being friendly."
"If this is about my dad again–"
"It's not," Espio interrupted. "I told you I'd drop it, and I did. It's not about that."
"Then why did you call?" Ray was getting impatient.
"I want to show you something."
"I'm kinda busy right now, but I could spare a few moments after dinner, if that works?"
"No, not now."
"Why not now?"
"Because, it can't be now. I haven't finished it yet."
"Oh, is it a song?" Ray asked.
"Something like that."
"What do you mean?"
"Let's just say it'll be nice, like a song, and it'll help," Espio responded cryptically.
"I don't understand."
"Just trust me. You've got nothing to lose."
"Okay, fine. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued," Ray admitted. "When do you want to show me it, then?"
"On the weekend, at the trial. Let's meet on the steps after the first day on Saturday afternoon, yeah?"
"Can you at least tell me what this is about?"
"Nope. That would ruin the surprise." Ray rolled his eyes. He could picture Espio's pleading face and, when he agreed to meet, he could almost hear Espio's lips shifting into a smile.
"Fine."
"Awesome. See you then. Bye Ray," Espio said quickly before he hung up and leant back with a satisfied grunt. "One down, one to go," Espio fired off a text to Mighty.
…
Julie cupped her cold hands around the warm ceramics of the cappuccino cup, filled to the brim with coffee. Knuckles sat opposite her, feverishly flicking through some cue cards he'd created earlier with some chemical equations on them.
"Are you done yet?" Julie asked unenthusiastically as she took a tentative sip.
"Just three more cards," Knuckles responded without looking up. He mouthed something and then slammed his hand angrily onto the table when he flipped over the card and swore to himself.
"I thought you invited me to coffee to catch up, not just to watch you study," Julie rolled her eyes. Knuckles flicked his own to meet hers and, with a slow sigh, pocketed the cards and forced a smile.
"Sorry, sorry, you're right. I'm just super nervous about exams," Knuckles apologized.
"I know. Same here. But let's just pretend, for a few brief moments, that they aren't coming up and just try to be normal for a little bit."
"And what is your definition of normal? If you haven't noticed there's nothing normal about this place."
"True. But we're almost done."
"Almost," Knuckles agreed. "To be honest I'm a bit scared to move on."
"Really?"
"I've fully thrown myself into my studies because I don't know what to expect. Will I get accepted into university? Will I stay in the city of move? And don't even get me started about my fears about Sonia and Espio and the kid…" Knuckles trailed off. That subject clearly weighed heavily on his mind, and Julie could see his pain.
"You know, Knux, whatever happens you'll always have me," Julie smiled helpfully. "We're siblings, and siblings stick together no matter what."
"Thanks, Julie, that means a lot. And if you need anything don't hesitate to ask."
"I'm glad you said that, because, actually, there is something I've been meaning to ask you but just haven't found the way to say it."
"Go for it. Ask away."
"So, we're siblings, right?"
"Yep."
"And your father is also my father."
"Yeah."
"And you grew up with him but I grew up with my mum and then I came to board here for the past four years."
"Julie, please just get to the point," Knuckles tried to hide his frustration.
"Okay, here goes," Julie psyched herself up and inhaled deeply. "Things between me and my mother are pretty rough and, well, I was wondering if… maybe…" Julie's voice grew quieter and slower before quickly she blurted out within half a second, "would you mind if I came to live with you and dad after we graduate?"
Knuckles' expression was blank and unreadable. Julie couldn't tell what he was thinking, or if he'd even heard what she'd said. She opened her mouth to repeat the question but finally he spoke.
"I didn't even think you'd want to after, y'know, our history," he said.
"I know it might be weird but we've moved past that, right?"
"Right."
"And you are my brother. And Locke is my father, too, and I've hardly even met the guy. Maybe we could spend some time together as a family?"
"I'd like that," Knuckles smiled.
"You would?" Julie grew hopeful.
"Yeah, I would. Besides, I can't let you live all by yourself. Besides, what else are family for?"
"What else are family for," Julie repeated to herself as a warmth washed over her. She'd never really had a family. Sure, she had Mari, but her mother had always been distant and preoccupied with something else. Suddenly both a brother and a father had wiggled their way into her life and she wasn't going to let that go. Not just yet. Whatever life threw her way she knew she could get through it with the help of her new family.
…
"I really appreciate you guys giving me a tour of your school," Jules said with a wide smile coating his face. He'd spent months regretting his decisions this year. He'd lost Aleena, he'd lost his kids and it felt like he'd lost his life. He knew he had one chance to turn it around and it was working. Two weeks ago his kids would never even entertain the idea of letting him into their lives and showing him around their school, their home away from home, but here they were doing just that.
"And that over there's the cafeteria where we eat all our meals," Manic pointed towards the long, skinny building sitting squat between the dormitory and the bell tower. As Manic continued to babble about the schoolgrounds Sonia glanced at her wristwatch and noted the time. It was two to two. She knew where they needed to be and took control.
"Follow me, daddy," Sonia took his arm and led him towards the dormitory. "There's this cute little table hidden behind the dorms and it'd be a good place to eat our sandwiches."
"Y-you… you called me daddy," Jules babbled as he stumbled along behind his pregnant daughter.
"Oh, I guess I did," Sonia blinked.
"You haven't called me that since…" he trailed off.
"Since I found out about your other life. Yeah," Sonia grew silent. Her eyes flicked around, unable to focus on anything until she managed to wrench the strength and look him in his pained eyes. "I've thought about that a lot lately. I want to trust you. I want to love you again, and I want to believe that you're still the man that I grew up with."
"I am," Jules insisted.
"Then it's time to prove it," Manic chimed in. Jules' brow furrowed.
"What's that supposed to m… ean…" Jules froze in place as Sonia pulled him around the corner and it clicked.
"D-Dad?" Sonic gaped as he stood just as rigid beside the table, the two locked in intense stare.
…
Childlike delight flushed Nack as he skipped up the steps. Euphoria had overwhelmed him that night as he snuggled up to the love puppy with sick delight. Last night couldn't have gone better if he had written it himself. Jet dumbly took his bait and Cosmo willingly stumbled into his trap. And now, sprung, he only needed to mop up the rest. Knuckles rattled against hardwood as Nack waited patiently with one hand behind his back until the door swung open.
"Ugh, what do you want?" Jet rolled his eyes.
"Nice to see you, too," Nack sneered.
"Just answer the question, Nack, I'm not in the mood," Jet scoffed. The sight of Nack still repulsed him and he honestly didn't care what the weasel had to say.
"Sorry, I won't be long. I just wanted to give you a gift." Nack removed his hand and gave Jet the stuffed dog. His eyes grew wide as he snatched the puppy from Nack's grubby hand and examined it.
"Y-y-you must have just stolen this."
"We both know I didn't. I told you she was lying to you and I told you she doesn't really care about you. Finally I have proof and not even you can deny it."
"You have to be lying. You did something, didn't you?"
"I'm hurt you don't believe me, but remember we have somebody that can clear this all up for the both of us," Nack said. Jet snorted as he grabbed his phone and quickly dialed Rogue's number.
"He–"
"Rouge, meet me down in the common room, now," Jet commanded, cutting her off.
"Hey, Jet, you can't just t–" Rouge growled on the other end but Jet hung up on her, cutting her off for the second time.
"Ouch. She's not going to be happy that you hung up on her," Nack sniggered. Jet ignored him as he slammed the door behind him and bounded down the steps. Nack followed gleefully. Jet got to the common room just as Rouge stomped down the steps, pushing a freshman out of the way in her anger.
"What the fuck was that, Hawk?" Rouge snarled, spittle flying from her mouth. "Nobody talks to me like that and nobody, I repeat, nobody cuts me off and hangs up on me. You better have a bloody good excuse."
"Jeez, I like this Rouge. You're sexy when you're angry," Nack said.
"Can it, creep! Now, Jet, answer me," Rouge demanded.
"Is Nack lying?" Jet asked.
"What?"
"Tell me he's lying," Jet repeated. Rouge had no idea what Jet was on about, but it suddenly all made sense when he thrust the love puppy into her hands. As swiftly as he anger flushed through her, it was distinguished.
"Oh, Hun, I'm sorry," Rouge said as she glanced from the animal to Jet's face. She could have sworn she saw his heart break in his emotionless stare. He stood motionless as a thousand thoughts cascaded in his head. He couldn't believe this. Cosmo lied to him, again. She threw away all his heartfelt gifts like they were nothing, and to Nack of all people. This was the last straw.
"That's it. We're done," Jet clenched his fists and stormed up the stairs on the girls side of the dormitory. Rouge went to give chase but Nack held her back.
"No, don't," Nack shook his head. "There's nothing we can do now. It's between him and her." Rouge didn't like it but she knew he was right. She played right into his hands.
"Don't touch me," Rouge wrenched her hand away from his grasp. "But you're right. I'm not just going to stand here, though. I'm getting a snack," Rouge decided as she made her way towards the cafeteria.
"Suit yourself. I wanna watch the fireworks," Nack rubbed his hands together as he lounged back on one of the couches and bided his time.
Meanwhile, Jet clambered up the stairs until he got to Cosmo's floor and broke into the room without knocking.
"Jet? What the hell? Get out!" Amy bellowed.
"I need to talk to Cosmo," Jet said, ignoring her fury.
"I don't care. I want you out!" Amy fought back. Jet glared at her and the petrifying look he shot her said more than any amount of words could. Amy shrunk under his gaze. "Actually, I think Cream said she wanted me for something so I've gotta go."
"Jet, are you alright?" Cosmo asked as she tentatively got off her bed.
"How could you?" Jet asked, his voice breaking.
"What are you talking about?"
"This," Jet barked as he showed her the love puppy. Cosmo gaped.
"Jet… I can explain. I–"
"I'm done with excuses," Jet cut her off. "I know everything. This stupid love puppy was a fucking test."
"Jet, please, I didn't mean to," Cosmo said.
"Nack gave this to me, so I could give it to you. We wanted to see if you would gamble it away."
"You… and Nack? Why would you believe a word he says."
"I didn't. So I got Rouge to help."
"Rouge…"
"Yeah," Jet's voice croaked. It was weak and he was about ready to break down, but he didn't want to appear weak in front of her. She didn't get to see him vulnerable. Not anymore. "She told me everything. The necklace, the puppy. Why?"
"I… I can't help it," Cosmo didn't know what to say. "I didn't mean to lie."
"You bet the necklace. I spent everything to give you something special and you bet it like it was nothing."
"Jet, I'm sorry. Please," Cosmo begged, tears spilling out of her eyes.
"No. It's too late. It's weeks too late. I'm done. We're done. It's over."
"What? Jet, no, please, I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry, too. But I'm done," Jet said, turning away before Cosmo could see the tears. He dropped the love puppy on the floor as he opened the door. He paused for a moment, fighting within himself. Cosmo hoped he'd turn around and change his mind, but instead he took a breath, steeled himself and closed the door behind him and shut out Cosmo for good.
…
"D-Dad?" Sonic gaped as he stood just as rigid beside the table, the two locked in intense stare.
"Sonic… what are you doing here?" Jules asked equally as confused. It was immediately noticeable to both Sonia and Manic that he was more on guard and less relaxed than a couple of seconds ago.
"I could ask you the same thing. This is my school," Sonic bit back instantly.
"My kids were just giving me a tour of their school," he emphasized.
"Strange, I don't remember being invited to this tour."
"You weren't."
"Dad!" Sonia cut in before things could escalate. "This is who I wanted you to see."
"Why do I need to see him?"
"Because he's your son. Just like Manic." Sonic didn't say a word. He stood still, unable to formulate a sentence. It was like something had overtaken him. Sonic was sure he'd moved past all this but just the sight of his father again dredged up all the old feelings. For the first time in a long time he felt that niggling itch for heroin.
"Okay, fine, I'll speak to him, if that's what you want," Jules rolled his eyes. "Sonic, boy, I'm sorry about everything that's happened between us." Sonic didn't say anything. Manic and Sonia watched on in silence. Jules looked back at them but they didn't look impressed. Jules grumbled. He wasn't going to let Sonic ruin his second chance with his kids. He had to grit his teeth and push through this.
"Look, Sonic, I'm sorry, truly. Things between us didn't end so well and when I came back I didn't handle things very well. Do you forgive me?" His words seemed sincere but Sonic could see through his father. It was a façade, plain and simple. He could tell by the way Jules kept flicking his gazes sidelong towards Sonia and Manic, his other children. His favourite children.
"I tried so hard to forget you," Sonic croaked. His voice was weak and shaky. He was overcome with something that rendered him speechless, but he wanted to say his peace. "You ruined my life."
"I did not."
"You did, dad," Sonic began to grow in confidence. "My whole life I thought I wasn't good enough. I thought you left mum because of me. I tried–"
"Yes, yes, I remember. We had this talk over the break. You poured your energy into your running to one day make a name for yourself so I'd come back. See, I listen," Jules said.
"You really don't get it, do you? You clearly listened but didn't actually take anything in," Sonic shook his head. "All this time I thought I was the reason you left, and after our last talk when you called me a mistake I was sure of it."
"I already told you that I didn't mean what I said."
"No. You did," Sonic continued. "But that's okay, because it's true. I was a mistake. You didn't want me. You weren't ready and then you felt stuck with me. When I saw you here I felt petrified. I felt the urge to start using again, after I've made so much progress. You still have this power over me, but I get it. You don't have that power over me. The thought of you holds the power. I've dedicated my life to you, even after the break. But I'm sick of letting you control me. I have amazing siblings, a wonderful life, great friends, a loving mother and the most beautiful girl in the world at my side, and what do you have?"
"I have my kids."
"See, even now you don't consider me as your kid. Look at Sonia. She also made a mistake and got pregnant but you don't see her taking the easy way out. She didn't plan for her baby but she's having it anyway and she's going to love it and be an amazing mother because I know her. A mistake altered her life. She didn't plan on this a year ago but she's making the best of it. That's something you could never do."
"How dare you talk to me like that," Jules grumbled. "I am your father and you will respect me. You're only eighteen. Don't think you understand the world or my choices. I did what was best for you."
"No, you did what was best for you. If you don't want me to be your son then fine, because I'm done wishing for a dad," Sonic barked back. "So go have fun with Sonia and Manic, your real children, because I don't need you anymore."
"Fine. Have a good life, Sonic. C'mon Sonia. Manic, you were going to show me your room?" Jules began to turn away but neither of his children moved.
"This isn't over, dad," Sonia said.
"What do you mean? You saw, I tried. It's not my fault if Sonic wants nothing to do with me, but I tried to make it right," Jules argued.
"No, you really didn't," Manic added.
"If you want to be a part of our lives, you need to be a part of his, too," Sonia wobbled over to stand by Sonic's side.
"She's right," Manic added, joining her on his other side. "We're a package deal now."
"Sonic, please, you can't take my children away from me. I've already lost them once."
"Don't do this, Jules. You made up your mind. You already left me twice. You don't get to do it a third time."
"I'm not leaving you. We can be father and son again. We can all be a family. The three of you, me, and your mothers. We can be happy again, I promise." Sonic didn't say anything. He didn't want to dignify his father with an answer. He'd spent his whole life hoping for his father to return, waiting by an open window. He dedicated himself to his father, wondering why he was never good enough; now he knew. He was good enough.
"Why do you hate me?"
"I don't hate you," Sonic said. "Hate is too strong an emotion. I'm indifferent."
"Manic… Sonia… please, you've seen I've changed. Don't leave me too."
"Sorry dad, but I need to think about my baby now and I don't think you hanging around will be good for it," Sonia sighed as she followed Sonic as he disappeared behind the building.
"Manic? My little hero? I love you, you know that, right?"
"I know, dad, and I love you too. I always will, but Sonic is right. You can't pick and choose your kids. You love me, but he was your son first and you abandoned him. I can't forgive you for that. He's my brother. You gave him to me and because of you I almost lost him, and Sonia. You're toxic. I hope you can find happiness, but it can't be with us. We gave you a chance, and I really wanted you to pass."
"Manic… don't leave. Please."
"I'm sorry. Goodbye."
…
"I'm so sorry I wasn't there to help. If you just want to be alone right now I completely understand," Spike offered as the two of them sat at one of the empty tables in the cafeteria. Both Mephiles and Mina offered to sit and eat with them but Breezie just wanted to be alone with Spike tonight.
"No. I don't want to have to relive it. Can I stay with you?" Breezie asked meekly as she rested her head on his shoulder, staring at her food.
"Of course. Anything you need. Are you sure you can face my father though? He was going to come and say goodbye but if you don't want to see him again I get it."
"No, I can handle him. I just don't want to leave your side. Please, not tonight."
"Alright. He said he'd be here by seven-thirty," Spike looked down at his watch. The sun had all but set, casting a deep orange glow across the darkening sky. Spike and Breezie got up, deposited their left over food and dumped their trays next to the kitchen. Spike grabbed Breezie's hand and together they made their way to the parking lot where Trevor said he'd meet them. Spike didn't know how he felt about his father. He was still deciding if he even wanted Trevor to still be apart of his life after witnessing what he was prepared to do yesterday but saying goodbye couldn't hurt. He could figure out what he wanted after exams were over. For now, knowing that his father was departing back to the city was enough to put his mind at rest.
However, it wasn't as painless a goodbye as Spike would have hoped. As they wandered down to the desolate parking lot they could hear something, or someone, grumbling from underneath the shadows of the big tree beside the pavement.
"I don't care," a shaky voice growled. "Whatever she did I'm sorry, but I won't let you hurt her."
"Now son, you're making a big mistake." Spike could make out the second voice. It was that of his fathers, but it sounded more reserved and unsure than usual.
"I won't warn you again!"
"I don't think you've thought this through young man," Trevor said. As Spike and Breezie crept closer the two of them gasped. There, beside the small bench, stood Trevor with his back to them and his hands in the air. In front of him, holding a gun with two hands clamped tightly around it with an itching finger tickling the trigger, stood Shadow. Spike and Breezie tiptoed closer and crouched down beside the trunk of the tree.
"Don't think I won't do it," Shadow warned. "I've killed before."
"I don't think you have," Trevor called his bluff.
"It doesn't matter. She's my sister. I won't let you hurt her," he repeated. "I know you're after her so I'm giving you a chance. Leave now and never come near her again or this bullet goes between your eyes!"
"Shadow, what are you doing?" Spike called out as he left Breezie and rushed out to stand between the two men.
"Spike, come back," Breezie hissed as she remained crouched in her hiding place.
"Spike?"
"Get away, son," Trevor growled.
"What's happening? Shadow, why do you have a gun?"
"Did he say son?"
"Yes, he's my father," Spike explained.
"But he's the head of the underground mob. He's not a good guy."
"I know that. Trust me, I'm not his biggest fan either but he's still family. I can't let you shoot him," Spike defended his father.
"Spike…" Trevor whispered.
"Well Maria is my family too and he came here to kill her," Shadow stood his ground.
"No, he came here to kill Breezie."
"He wanted to kill your girlfriend and you still defend him?"
"It's complicated. Wait, you came here to kill his sister?" Spike turned on his heels.
"I was going to kill two birds with one stone," Trevor shrugged. "Besides, this kid here is about to kill me so I'm not the only bad guy here."
"Yes, you are," they both shouted back in unison before Spike turned his attention back to his roommate.
"Shadow, look," Spike began carefully. "I know my dad. I know he's probably done a bunch of horrible things and he's wronged you in the past but this isn't the way. You know that as much as I do. Killing is wrong. There must be another way." Shadow faltered for a moment but shook away his hesitation and stood his ground.
"There is no other way. It's either him or her," Shadow affirmed.
"What did she do?"
"She took something from me," Trevor spoke up. "Her and her little gang of thieves stole from my warehouse."
"What if she gives you back what she took?" Spike asked.
"Do you happen to have fifty thousand dollars in unmarked bills lying about?"
"Fifty thousand?"
"She fell in with a bad crowd," Shadow said. "But it doesn't matter. I don't have the money."
"Then I guess I can't drop the hit out on her."
"If she dies, I'm taking you with her," Shadow said as he readied his finger.
"Wait!" Spike yelled, still standing between the two men, neither one daring to stand down. "Surely we can come to some kind of agreement. Surely there's something you can do. Shadow, please, think?"
Shadow paused for a moment, deep in thought. He wasn't rich. He didn't have nearly enough money to pay back that which Maria took. He didn't really have anything of value. He never stayed at the same place long enough to make roots or connections with those who could give him something. Only Maria ever cared for him. He couldn't even remember his own parents. The Commander knew more about his father than he ever did and his mother… his mother! Suddenly Shadow got an idea.
"What about these?" Shadow asked as he removed the two golden rings that always sat snug around his wrists.
"What are they?" Trevor asked.
"They are bracelets made out of gold," Shadow explained. "They are the only thing I have of my mothers. I never knew her, but I've had these for as long as I can remember. The Commander told me that they used to belong to my mother before she passed away. When I look at them I think of her. It's like if I am wearing them then that means she's looking down on me, protecting me." Breezie's heart broke.
"How much are they worth?" Trevor asked.
"Dad!" Spike scolded. "They are clearly worth more to him than any amount of money. Surely that means something?"
"And you are willing to give them up?"
"A trade for Maria's life? I am. If I give these up, do I have your word that you'll never seek her out again? That you'll remove the bounty on her head and let her live a normal life again?" Shadow asked. Trevor pursed his lips and flicked his gaze between Shadow and Spike. His son pleaded with his eyes.
"Okay," Trevor sighed. "I accept this trade." Shadow reluctantly handed over the two golden rings that always clung to his wrists. He couldn't remember the last time he'd removed them. He didn't think he ever actually did. But for Maria… He'd do anything for her. The one person that ever gave him the time of day growing up. His sister. His first true love.
"Goodbye, dad," Spike said emotionlessly.
"Spike, I–"
"I don't want to talk right now," Spike interrupted.
"Okay son. Goodbye," Trevor turned to walk off.
"I'll call you after exams are over," Spike called out as Trevor unlocked his car door. His father turned back and offered a weak smile before he drove off. Spike turned back to Shadow, who still stood rooted to the spot.
"Are you alright?" Spike asked.
"Thanks for the help, but I was fine," Shadow hissed.
"Hey, don't speak to him like that," Breezie finally made her presence known, stepping out from her hiding place. "He did you a favour."
"He made me give up my rings. My most treasured possession."
"He did it to save you, and your sister," Breezie fumed. She had had an exhausting day an all her emotions had manifested into anger.
"Whatever," Shadow turned to storm off, pocketing the pistol. "Leave me alone."
"Shadow, wait," Spike jogged up and tapped him on the shoulder. Shadow didn't turn around. "I promise I'll talk to dad. I'll get your rings back. One day." Shadow paused for a moment and Spike almost thought he could hear a faint whisper, but no words came out of Shadow's mouth. Instead, he brushed Spike's hand off his back and walked off into the darkness.
"I think you did the right thing," Breezie cooed softly. "He'll come around in time."
"This has been one shit show of a day," Spike complained aloud. "C'mon, let's go to bed and forget everything about this day."
"I'd like nothing more," Breezie agreed, pushing down her own demons she garnered from the days events. She knew she couldn't just forget it but, when she was with Spike, she knew she could push through.
…
The decision continued to weigh on Sonia's mind. She'd been over it a hundred times; even dreamt about a life with both of them. Espio or Knuckles: The biggest choice she's ever had to make. It wasn't a schoolgirl trying to figure out which boy she liked. It was more than that. This was deciding who she wanted to be there for her daughter. The boy who impregnated her but she never really knew even existed until a couple weeks ago, or the boy whose best friends with her brother and has shown he would support her through thick and thin no matter what. It was a tough decision, but one she couldn't wait any longer to make. The child was coming and within the month it'd be born.
Sonia's first thought was to go talk to Tikal. She had dated both of them at one point after all. However, when she tried to seek out Tikal she didn't have the time of day. Something equally hard was weighing on Tikal's mind and Sonia didn't want to stress her out more than she already was. Whatever was going on, Tikal had to deal with it herself.
Sonia tried to think who else she could go to. Apart from Tikal she didn't think Espio had dated anybody else. She heard stories about his troubled past, and how he used to sleep with a different girl each week, but he'd clearly changed since then, and she wasn't the only one who saw that. On the other hand, Knuckles had been around the block. He'd dated Tikal, Rouge and Julie-Su in short succession, and now he was dating her. He wasn't one to stay single for long.
Rouge… that was it. Sonic had told stories about Knuckles and Rouge and how rocky that relationship was. Rouge had seen Knuckles through his highest of highs, but she'd also been there through his lowest. If anybody could give insight into Knuckles it would be Rouge. Sonic made her way down the hall, thankful that they both lived on the second floor and she didn't have to mount the tiring staircase, and knocked on her door. A few moments past until somebody opened it, but it wasn't Rouge.
"Where's Rouge?" Sonia asked.
"She's out. What do you want?" Scourge scoffed, wearing nothing but a black t-shirt with a heavy-metal band's logo splattered on the front, and boxer shorts. Sonia blushed as she turned away to avert her gaze.
"Could you put some pants on?" Sonia asked politely.
"Nah, I'm comfortable."
"But I need to talk to you."
"Then talk," Scourge snorted.
"I can't talk to you when you're basically naked."
"Don't be so prude. Don't worry, I'm not hard or anything. You wouldn't make me hard, even if you weren't as fat as a whale."
"Fuck you too," Sonia retorted. "And it's called being pregnant, not fat!"
"Whatever," he rolled her eyes.
"And I'm only in this predicament because of you!" Sonia accused.
"What did I do?"
"You drugged me at Elias' party, remember?"
"Oh, yeah," Scourge actually felt bad. "Look, I'm genuinely really sorry about that. I was a dick. But, in my defense, it was all Fiona's idea. I just went along with it."
"You're just as bad."
"I said sorry!"
"And I said I don't forgive you. You really hurt me, Scourge, and drugged me. I can't just forgive you for that. You changed my life."
"For the better though, right, in the end?"
"That's not the point…"
"Look, I can take a message for Rouge if you really want. Otherwise go away."
"ugh, fine. Just tell her to come see me when she gets back."
"Why?"
"Just tell her!"
"I'll need more than that."
"Why do you have to be so difficult," Sonia sighed in frustration.
"Because it's fun," Scourge shrugged with a smug smirk.
"Fine. I need to ask her about Knuckles." Scourge's face instantly fell. Sonia noticed it. "What? Not a fan of him?"
"Quite indifferent until recently, actually."
"Why, what happened?"
"He kissed Rouge."
"Yeah, they were going out…"
"No, this was, like, a week or two ago, while he knew I was going out with her!" Sonia gasped.
"Wait… a fortnight ago?" Sonia thought sadly. "He was pursuing me a week ago, though."
"Wouldn't put it past him to cheat on his girl for Rouge. She always did have a way with him. Thinks he still has a chance with her even after all this time. I bet he'd get back with her in an instant if she asked. Pathetic, honestly," Scourge huffed.
"He would?"
"Definitely. Alright, I'll give Rouge the message. Now let me sleep," Scourge groaned as he closed the door rudely on Sonia's face. Sonia stood deep in thought. Scourge's words echoed in her head.
I bet he'd get back with her in an instant if she asked…
Sonia didn't know why, but those words resonated with her. She knew it was true. If he couldn't stay loyal to just one girl, could she really trust him? Scourge had really given her something to think about, surprisingly.
…
It was dark out as the lone call stalled outside the magnificent house hidden away behind the black gate. Bernadette cupped her hands and blew on them for warmth in the cold night. A light drizzle coated the city from the hazy clouds above, but the weather was the last thing on Bernadette's mind.
She steeled her nerves and switched off the ignition. As the light fixated to the car roof slowly faded she was thrust into darkness. She left her car and was hit with the bitter winds. She wrapped her scarf tighter around her neck and made for the gate, pressing the buzzer by the latch.
"H-hello?" the unusually timid voice of Rosemary Prower answered.
"Rosemary, hi, it's Bernadette. Can I speak to you?" Bernadette replied. There was a moments pause before a reply came.
"You shouldn't be here," Rosemary whispered. "Amadeus can't find out."
"Is he here?"
"…No," a reply finally came.
"Good, I didn't think he would. I was sure Claire said she had a meeting with him tonight. Please, this will be quick, but we need to talk."
"I really don't know if I should…"
"Rosemary, it's me. If you won't talk to me for me, then do it for our boys. Tails was like a second son to me, and I know Sonic was like one to you," Bernadette begged. "You know Tails wouldn't want Amadeus to do this. Please, talk to me." There was no reply. Simply silence. Then, after half a minute, right when Bernadette was ready to walk away she heard the electronic hum of the buzzer and the gates began to slide into their alcoves. With a sigh, Bernadette made her way towards the house.
"Hey Berny," Rosemary said in the open doorway, the illumination pouring out from the hallway into the dark yard. Rosemary was wearing a long, flowing silk robe that stretched down to the bones of her ankles.
"Hey, Rosemary, it's good to see you again," Bernadette opened her arms and gave Rosemary a brief hug. When she pulled apart, she gasped. "Wh-what happened to your face?"
Rosemary's left eye was a deep, dark purple. An ugly bruise coated her face, and other scars dotted her mouth and cut her lips. She quickly retreated, shielding her face with her hands.
"Nothing," Rosemary replied faintly.
"Did Amadeus do this to you?" Bernadette asked in horror.
"It's nothing. I just fell."
"This is not okay, Rosy! You can't let him do this."
"I… I'm scared of him," Rosemary admitted aloud. "I tried to convince him to stand down on the lawsuit but he got angry. He said we were supposed to be a team and then…" she trailed off.
"Shh, it's okay," Bernadette replied with a hint of motherly love coating her voice as she draped an arm over the cowering Rosemary. Rosemary shivered under her touch like the delicate flow she'd become. Bernadette frowned. She couldn't believe the once confident, proud woman had been reduced to this. Afraid in her own house. Trapped.
"I'm so sorry, Berny," Rosemary cried into Bernadette's shoulder. "I've been so weak. Amadeus is on the war path and I just don't know what to do. I don't want to sue the school. I never did but him and Claire…"
"I know, I know, I believe you," Bernadette comforted her friend.
"I went to the school and Sonic saw me. When I saw him I, I just see Tails' face in his. I miss him so much," tears stung her eyes.
"I know," Bernadette soothed sympathetically. "I can't imagine what you're going through.
"It's gotten worse," Rosemary croaked as she gathered a bit of strength.
"What do you mean?"
"Claire is on the war path. After Fiona got expelled from the school she's more invested in this case than any other she's ever had."
"What? Fiona got expelled? What was Razor thinking?"
"I want to help but I can't. I can't stand up to him, Berny. I wish I could but I just don't have the strength anymore. How ashamed Tails must be of me."
"Hey, don't say that. Tails wouldn't want you to just give up like this. Why don't you come live with me?"
"I can't do that."
"Why not? Just for a bit."
"He'll find me, Berny. He'll know I'm with you."
"But he can't treat you like this."
"It's just until the trial. I need him to think I'm still on his side so him and Claire confide in me about their strategy."
"What are you talking about?"
"I got in touch with Rob 'O Hare. He's Razor's defense attorney."
"You're going to testify against your husband?"
"I'm going to help save the school," Rosemary said with determination. "It's what Tails would want. I refuse to be a damsel any longer. Tails would want me to be strong and that's exactly what I'm doing. I won't let him shut down the school. I promise."
"You continue to amaze me at every step, Rosy. You really are one courageous woman," Bernadette let a smile cross her face. She'd misjudged Rosemary. Despite her anxiety and fear, she still stays strong for what she believes in. Bernadette admired her.
"We can do this, Berny. We can save the school. Are you with me?"
"You know I am. For Tails."
"For Tails."
…
The night grew young as Nack lay on his mattress in Tails' old room. He smiled to himself as he turned the page of his novel. Although things didn't go exactly to plan, even Nack had to admit that it was a very successful day. He still had a score to settle with Breezie, but she didn't escape unscathed. Jet dumped Cosmo. He repaid his debt to Mina and Mephiles even got himself beaten up as an added bonus. A knock sounded at the door, tearing Nack from his thoughts. He dog-eared the page and closed his book, setting it down on the dusty bedside table as he sauntered confidently to the door.
"Who is it?" Nack asked as he turned the lock.
"It's me," a sniveling, shy voice echoed through the gap. Nack recognized it immediately and threw open the door to reveal Cosmo.
"Cosmo, what a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?" Nack asked, pouring sincerity into his words.
"Can I come in?" Cosmo asked meekly.
"Of course," Nack stepped aside and ushered her in, grinning as he closed the door behind her. "Is everything alright?"
"J-J-J…" Cosmo sniffed but couldn't keep her composure as she burst into tears, the word drowned out by crying.
"Cosmo," Nack gasped as he closed the distance between them and wrapped his arms around her protectively. "Shhh," he quieted her and rubbed circles around her back. "It's okay, I'm here for you. I've got you. Tell me what's wrong?"
"Jet dumped me," Cosmo admitted. Nack tried to hide his happiness.
"I'm so sorry to hear that."
"I just don't know what happened. I got carried away and lost everything and… and…" Cosmo couldn't finish.
"Hey, don't cry," Nack whispered as he held her at arms distance, his fingers pressing into her shoulders. He forced her to look him in the eyes. "Don't beat yourself up, okay? It wasn't your fault. Jet is just a dick and he doesn't know what he just lost."
"I screwed up," Cosmo tore her eyes from him but he demanded her to look at him again. Cosmo obliged almost frightenedly.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to be so forceful," Nack apologized. "I just need you to know that I'm serious. You're amazing, Cosmo, and if he doesn't see your worth then he's an idiot. You don't need him. You don't need anybody except me. I've always been there for you, flaws and all. I'll always be here to protect you. Jet and the rest of the school might not appreciate you, but I do. I can protect you from them and their judgment. You just have to let me. You trust me, don't you?"
"I… I…" Cosmo thought about it. She wasn't sure. Jet made her think that Nack was no good for her. He seemed to always get her in trouble. He only ever used her and never had her best interests at heart. But was that just Jet's way to manipulate her? Was Nack really telling the truth? She wasn't sure, but his embrace was so warm, and his words were so gentle.
"I'll always be here for you, Cosmo. You don't need anybody but me. You trust me, don't you?" Nack repeated.
"I do," Cosmo finally admitted as she let Nack guide her face towards his as he placed his lips gingerly against hers.
A/N: Well, what did you think? Expect a bunch of things to wrap up the way they did? Let's get the big two out of the way first. Nack's plan to trick Shellbreaker and abuse Breezie began without a hitch but thanks to Mephiles' help and Mina finally standing up to her father everybody managed to get out unscathed... well Breezie might need some counciling after this. Point for Nack. And luckily Mina is finally free of her disgusting father. Secondly, Shadow finally got Maria's debt paid, even though he had to give up his most prized possession to do it. Hey, family is important after all. Now that the big two dads have gone hopefully our cast can stop looking to the past and start looking forward to the trial that's just around the corner.
They weren't the only dads in this chapter. Jules made his final attempt to reconnect with his kids but unfortunately he just couldn't get over the bitterness he felt towards his first, and oldest, son Sonic. The symbol of the life he wished he could forget. Siblings stick together through thick and thin and Jules found that out. Manic and Sonia chose Sonic and, at last, we can say goodbye to their deadbeat, lying father.
Ash tries to talk some sense into Razor but his decision to expel Fiona can't be reversed (Did you miss Fiona in this chapter?) Cream finally stands up to her mother, but can she win Mighty back or has that bridge already been burnt? And Manic convinced Mari to come meet Julie but Julie doesn't want anything to do with Manic. Has he ruined his friendship with her permanently or will Mari come through and we can arrive at a happily family-Su ending? Either way, at least Julie has Knuckles to fall back on.
It wasn't all bad, however. Eclipse and Wave had an awkward blind date. Blaze and Sonic found comfort in each other against their demons they've both been facing, and Wave finally, finally stands up to her childhood bully, and the source of all her nightmares, Lien-Da.
Mighty can't forgive Tikal, understandably, Silver was too late to tell Fiona how he really felt and Scourge told Sonia just what type of man Knuckles can be. Did his love for Rouge ruin his chances with Sonia or will she understand that it was a slip of the mind and he really does harbor strong feelings for her and her child?
But the big three that extend to the future. Firstly, although Rosemary is being abused and belittled she isn't the damsel in distress that you all probably thought she was. No. Rosemary is tough. She knows she needs to take this abuse to stay in the inner circle so she can smuggle the information like a spy in wartime. Rosemary wants the school to win, but she can't show that... yet. Will this all pay off for her or is she entering a world of hurt? Amadeus and Claire won't go down easy.
And Jet and Comso broke up! They're probably the longest running relationship in this story since Silver and Blaze. They've been back and forth, struggling to overcome their complicated feelings for each other since the start of part 3 back in the 20's. They've been struggling but Nack finally pushed them over the edge. Another point for Nack. Poor Rouge didn't know what she did, did she? With them broken up, poor Cosmo did the one thing we'd all hope she wouldn't do. She's run straight into the psycopathic arms of Nack. Can anybody save her from him, or can she get away, or were they always meant for each other?
And Claire has discovered Espio's big secret! She's blackmailing him. Espio needs to testify against the school to protect the one he truly loves. If his relationship with Gold got out she'd be sent to prison instantly. Looks like Claire can add another student to her ranks to destroy the school. But don't forget, Bean overheard everything...
Thanks for sticking with this story. We're only 3 chapters away. One more normally chapter and then the big two-part finale! We'll definitely get this trial finished off before the end of the year even if it takes me 3 months for each chapter. I'm so excited to get to the final three chapters and I hope you are too. I also hope you're all staying safe and healthy through this horrible pandemic. Now, without further adu, the question of the day and what I'm sure all of you read this post-ramble for: the next chapter preview...
QotD: Not all current relationships will make it through to the last word of the last chapter. Also, some relationships are still yet to blossom. So, my question is this: Which current relationship do you hope ends before the conclusion, and which pair of characters do you hope get together before the end?
