Sorry for the delay again – MMORPGs can be so engrossing. Now, it's time yet another chapter I've been looking forward to writing, and seeing what I can do with.

Chapter 106 - Trapped In The Labyrinth! What We Seek Is...!

The Anti-Spiral stood inside a strange chamber - a world of abstract designs, of swirling blacks, whites, grays and blues and of impossible shapes that could only be described as a vision from the fever dream or a bad Refrain trip.

Nia, her body missing a few sections, hung in mid-air as if being crucified. Her body hung limply, but inside she was struggling with all her might to hold on to her memories and knowledge - the data that the Anti-Spiral is extracting.

Suddenly, Janus and Metatron reappeared, the former quickly tossed aside by the latter, then immediately chained to an invisible wall by the same force that held Nia aloft.

"Nia!" the young man called to her. This got her attention, and she looked over to see him.

"Janus," she said weakly, though his presence seemed to rekindle a flame within her; "If you're here, then..."

Nia started to grunt, her struggle now manifesting outside her mind as she vainly wriggled to escape her bonds. The Anti-Spiral squinted with annoyance, while Metatron nodded with interest.

"Well, well, she's really putting up a fight," the leader of Atik Yomin quipped. "I think Iophiel and I made her a little too resilient."

"She is only delaying the inevitable," the Anti-Spiral replied haughtily; "With DREAM trapped in the Labyrinth, we can take our time in extracting the data within her using this Chamber of Zakah's purification systems." Metatron nodded and turned back to Janus, approaching him ominously.

"As for you," he said with a leer. "It's time." With that, he mumbled some words in a language Janus vaguely recognized as the angel closed his eyes, held out his hand and reached straight into the young man's chest, entering it as if it were nothing but air.

Janus screamed in agony as he felt his very soul being pulled at, and he wriggled in his own bonds with just as much success as Nia had, trying to resist Metatron's strange spell.

Don't fight it, Janus! Enoch cried in Janus' mind; I told you - I wanted this to happen!

Granlif's pilot ceased struggling, and indeed, the pain died down as Metatron pulled out a sphere of light that drifted into his body. The angel's eyes opened, and took on a noticeably kinder expression. Janus even saw a few tears form in the angel's eyes.

"I see," the angel said; "So, that's what you've been through."

"Enoch...you're in there, right?" Janus murmured.

"The person you called Enoch was a fragment of my soul," the leader of Atik Yomin replied. "I have all of the memories and knowledge he accumulated during our separation."

"Then you must know that whatever you did to them is wrong!" the mecha pilot shot back. To his dismay, Metatron shook his head.

"On the contrary," he said. "I see more than ever that what I did was right." Nia and Janus gasped simultaneously when they heard this.

"Didn't I say I was giving them what they wanted?" the angel continued; "I'm giving them back everything they lost – their homes, their families, their friends! In the worlds of the Labyrinth, the traumas they've suffered never happened! Their lives are finally the way they want!"

"Only the way you think they want it," Janus retorted scornfully; "and once they realize what's really going on, they'll do everything they can to escape." Nia nodded, even though she was still struggling to resist the Anti-Spiral's analysis.

"Is that so?" Metatron chuckled; "Well, perhaps you'd like to have a look at just what I've given them." He waved his hand in front of Janus' eyes, and gave him a glimpse into the worlds of the Multidimensional Labyrinth...

Shinji and Asuka were in a major hurry.

"So, I heard there's a few new teachers starting work at our school," Shinji said as he and Asuka ran down the street towards Ashford Academy, both wearing typical Japanese school uniforms. "One of them's a woman, right?"

"Yeah," Asuka replied; "Ever since Ashford fully opened its doors to former Numbers, it's been getting a ton of new applicants, both for students and as teachers! They're already planning on expanding the campus again!"

"I hope one of the new teachers has a nice butt!" Shinji said with a rather lecherous tone, already imagining who it might be. His daydreaming kept from seeing or even hearing a rather panicked Rei rushing toward the same street corner, a slice of buttered toast clenched between her teeth.

"Oh crap, I'm sho late!" Rei cried to herself, her voice muffled by her breakfast; "I can't be late on the firsht day of cl..."

The two students slammed into each other headfirst, sending both sprawling to the ground, and the toast flying. It landed a short distance from Rei, where a few small birds immediately began nibbling away at it. As both teenagers recovered from the impact, Shinji's eyes caught a glimpse underneath Rei's skirt.

"Oh, uh..." Rei looked at him, then down at her skirt, and started blushing heavily as she covered it up before getting to her feet.

"Oh man, I'm REALLY sorry!" Rei called back as she took off running again, her cheeks beet-red with embarrassment; "Bye!"

"Hey, Asuka...I feel like I've seen that girl somewhere before," Shinji suddenly said as feelings of deja vu stirred within him. Asuka, even as she was momentarily overcome by the same sensation, quickly shook it off and frowned.

"Come on, you dummkopf...we're gonna be late too!" she said angrily as she started off in the same direction as Rei...

Tara awoke with a start as her alarm went off, with the morning news.

"Good morning, USJ! This is UBC Radio with today's top news...last night, Her Royal Majesty Empress Euphemia signed an act officially freeing the remaining Areas of the Holy Britannian Empire, thus meeting a condition for officially joining the United Federation of Nations. The UFN has agreed take up responsibility for handling the gradual transfer of power from the Empire back to the people of the former Areas..."

Finally, some good news for once, the girl thought as she hit the off button on her alarm clock.

A split second later, something hit Tara.

She was back in her room, in the house that had burned down. Everything was as she remembered it. In fact, for all she knew, this was how things had always been. Yet the events that unfolded in her dream felt all too real. The pain, the joy, the excitement...even now they were still fresh in her mind.

Tara's mind shifted away from the thought when she heard the sounds of slightly off-key piano playing and the whistling of her pet bird coming from downstairs. With a slight spring in her step, she walked down to the lower floor of her house.

Sure enough, there was her father Gilbert Zifell, playing a small piano on one side of the house while her mother Haruhi was on the other, working on breakfast. Her parrot Zengar sat in a large, roomy cage just next to the stairwell, greeting her with an ear-piercing yet joyful screech.

Zengar, Tara thought. Why do I remember his name being Zig?

"Good morning, Tara," Haruhi said, greeting her daughter with a loving smile.

"Morning, mom," Tara replied as a tear inexplicably dripped down her face. Confused, she wiped it away before turning to her parrot and opening the door and presenting her hand. The bird stepped on to it and bent its head down, which prompted its owner to start gently scratching its head and neck.

"You know, I had the craziest dream last night," the girl suddenly said before launching into tales of her adventures with DREAM, while her parents listened with half-interest. As she began to regale them about her fantastic battle with the Z-Master, Gilbert stopped her.

"Okay, we get it...it was amazing," he said with a little laugh before his eyebrows raised as a thought popped into his head - "You know, your whole story reminds me of the research into parallel universes I've been doing at work. I can't help but wonder if our dreams are actually our minds traveling to other universes and living out the lives of others...or maybe even our minds travel to universes of our own creation."

"C'mon, dad, it was just a dream!" Tara said with a dismissive giggle, even though it seemed to cause something within her to stir.

"Breakfast is ready," Tara's mother announced as she flopped a pancake onto a plate already stacked with five or six. She then carried the plate and two others over to the table, balancing the third on her forearm. The girl licked her lips as it was placed before her - no sooner did her mother sit down than did Tara begin to wolf down her breakfast, much to her parents' astonishment.

"Slow down, dear," Haruhi said. "If you eat that fast, you'll choke! Put down your fork between bites!" Tara sighed and did so. After a few moments of silence, Gilbert turned to his wife.

"Did you hear on the news last night?" he said; "A major blizzard's gonna hit sometime this afternoon."

"Oh my," Haruhi replied. "I hope it doesn't keep your relatives from..."

As if those words had been a cue, the doorbell rang. Tara immediately sprang to her feet in excitement and rushed over to the door and opened it. Standing at the door were a portly man and woman, one dressed in a Santa Claus outfit complete with fake beard and huge sack, and the other was dressed in the outfit of Mrs. Claus, complete with a sprig of holly in her hair.

"Ho-ho-ho-ho!" the man laughed, his belly shaking like a bowl full of jelly; "Meeeeerry Christmas, you all!"

"Uncle Harkness! Aunt Bellonda!" Tara cried joyfully as she embraced the two, who returned the hug as Gilbert and Haruhi approached them.

"Still with the Santa get-up, eh bro?" Gilbert said with a laugh.

"Y'know Harkness as much as I do," a voice came from behind them, "he's been doing it since Jessica and Roderick were born, bless their souls, and he was never one to break tradition." Tara and her parents squeezed past Gilbert's brother and sister-in-law and spotted three more of their kin coming up the driveway, with two children climbing out of the car.

"Uncle Lugh! Aunt Idun! Aunt Gudrun!" she squealed as she embraced them as well. Paul and Alia approached as well.

"Paul, Alia," Gudrun said. "Come give your cousin, Uncle Gilbert and Aunt Haruhi hugs!" The twins did so, embracing Tara with significantly less excitement than Tara did, almost as if they weren't terribly happy to be here.

"Don't forget us!" yet another voice called to them. As Paul and Alia went to greet their uncle and aunt, Tara looked up and saw two more familiar faces, one of which was pushing a baby carriage that contained two infants.

"Uncle Cedric! Aunt Elina!" Tara exclaimed. She hurried over to them, gave them hugs and bent down to get a better look at the two babies.

"Oh, are these two little Philemon and Sophia?!" she cooed. "They've gotten so big!" The infants smiled back at her. Before long, everyone was in the house again, socializing and crowding around the babies, leaving Tara, Paul and Alia alone to chat.

The purple-haired girl looked at the adults in the room, and couldn't help but notice something was missing.

"Hey, Alia," she asked, "where's your dad?"

Alia looked at Tara like she had three heads.

"He's right there," she said, pointing to Lugh, who was cradling baby Philemon in his arms.

"No, Peleus," Tara said, almost sure she was remembering things right. "You two are cousins, aren't you?"

"You nitwit," Paul said in a deadpan manner. "There's no Peleus in our family. We're brother and sister, and Lugh's our dad." Tara shook her head.

"You're right," she said with an awkward giggle; "Silly me. I must have been thinking about that dream I had."

Just then, the doorbell rang again.

"I'll get it!" Tara said, knowing who was waiting at the door. She sprinted over and opened it, smiling widely. Before her were an assemblage of faces that she had lost in that life she saw as a dream...

Her mother's side of the family.

"You all came..." she said. "I'm so..."

The forces of DREAM that had defended Earth appeared through a gate standing atop Zig and his family...but they weren't quite expecting the scene before them – an unfathomably vast, tree-like arrangement of orange-colored spheres popping in and out of existence rapidly, within an even vaster white space that extended what seemed like forever in every direction.

"Is this the Anti-Spiral's domain?" Yukiya said as he looked around.

"No, this is...somewhere else," Ayano said, shaking her head. "Did Zig lose his way?" In response, the caelceti let out a cry.

"I think he intended to take us here," Iophiel said as Zig drew closer. "Look closer at those spheres."

As they did so, they could all see their friends living a wide variety of lives:

Simon and a fake Kamina drilling into a bank vault and making off with the jewels within...Kira and Lacus were helping children at Reverend Malchio's orphanage...Lelouch, Nunnally, Suzaku, Rolo and Kallen were hanging out with the Ashford Student Council...Amuro, Chan, Bright and his wife were enjoying a sunset on an Earth beach...Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Kensuke, Toji and Hikari in a class taught by Misato...Guy, Mikoto and Mamoru were lying on a hill, counting the stars...Duke, Rubina and Maria were overseeing the reconstruction of the planet Fleed...Michiru, Go, Kei and Gai were helping Prof. Saotome with a Getter Ray power generator...Koji and Sayaka Yumi attending university together...Kouji and Sayaka Yuumi working at the new Photon Power Lab...Domon and Chibodee were sparring while Rain and the rest of the Shuffle Alliance looked on...Basara was rocking out at Gamlin and Mylene's wedding...Akito and Yurika rode a twin bicycle on a newly-restored Martian field...Loran was living quietly in a cabin with Queen Dianna...Leila and Hyuga living a happy life with a caravan of Gypsies...Fudo and Dante living a happy life with Miki and her family...

These were but some of the things they saw. After a few moments, Puru turned to Iophiel, looking rather confused.

"If this is some sort of prison to punish them," the girl commented, shaking her head in bewilderment, "it's not a punishment at all. They all look so happy!"

"I know, right?" a small voice came from nearby. "My big brother...he says that this is what they wanted." The group looked over and saw a single figure floating in the void – a girl with delicate features, long white hair, bright blue eyes and small wings of rainbow light.

"Na...dija..." Iophiel gasped, and so did the DREAMers when they heard that name. Everyone had heard about this girl – Metatron's little sister, and the soul that had inhabited Rei Ayanami.

"Hi, big sis!" Nadija chirped before turning to the other DREAMers. "You're all of Rei's friends, right? Well, you can have happy lives just like them! They've gotten back everyone they've lost!" The group looked at each other, but they all seemed to be of the same mind. They all flew up and off of Zig and the other caelceti.

"Sorry, kiddo," Bernie said, "but this isn't really what they see as happiness!"

"It's not?" Nadija said, genuinely puzzled. "But big brother told me you said..."

"What they really want," Iophiel said, her voice filled with conviction, "is the right to choose their own path in life, without being manipulated from on high!" When she heard this, Metatron's sister started to rethink things. But as she did, another angel appeared.

"Do not listen to them, Lady Nadija," it said upon appearing.

"Uriel," Iophiel muttered.

"Return to your brother's side," Uriel said. "I shall deal with these interlopers." Nadija nodded silently, gave one last uneasy glance at the Multidimensional Labyrinth, and disappeared. With that, Uriel turned back toward DREAM.

"So, you lot think you can free them?" he said; "That, I'm afraid, is impossible...and even if they could escape, they would choose not to."

"Don't bet on it, pal!" Gino said, pointing dramatically. "We'll dive into that prison ourselves to bring them back if we have to!"

"I would like to see you try," the High Seraph replied as his body began to shine brilliantly and grow larger and larger. Many of the DREAMers tried to fire on the angel as he was transforming, but their projectiles did nothing to even scratch him. After a minute, the change was complete.

Uriel's new blue body had several short, clawed tentacles on the left side of its body and armless, deformed hands; Its left foot had three lizard-like toes, while a small sickle jutted out from its shin; its right leg had a sharp, pointed structure for a foot. Its head was a cone-shaped mass with two glowing red eyes arranged vertically. Its torso had a recognizable face, its eyes shining like blood rubies, and its nose and mouth draped in some sort of beard; Finally, a two-headed lance was held in its clenched teeth.

"Your time has come, mortals," Uriel said. "If you will not accept paradise as your friends have, I will send you to oblivion instead!"

As he said this, Zig suddenly opened a Threshold behind him, turned around and dove through it.

"Zig?!" Puru exclaimed. "He ran away?!"

"The caelceti knows that your efforts shall come to naught," the angel chuckled.

No, Iophiel thought, Zig has a plan. All we can do is trust it...

Back in the Chamber of Zakah, Janus finished watching snippets of everyone's lives in the Labyrinth – even Tara's. Seeing his friends happy only made him feel a deep despair, as he realized that he was alone again...just like ten thousand years ago.

"You see now?" Metatron said, almost amused by his doppelganger's despair; "You see how happy they all are now...and it's all because you never crawled your way out of your hole over ten thousand years ago."

Janus was too overcome with despair to be confused by these words.

"Lucifer knew you were the key," the angel continued; "A factor I couldn't manipulate. That's why he saved you. But in doing so, he set all of your friends down a path of misery - and he knew it too."

"Don't listen to him, Janus!" Nia cried out, trying to reassure. "You..." But she was cut off as she felt a chunk of her body being converted to data.

"You know why?" Metatron said, bending down and getting right up in Janus' face, an almost cruel smile on his face; "It's the same reason that you descended to Hell without actually dying when Mazinger ZERO destroyed your body..."

He straightened up.

"Because you're the spawn of a monstrosity from Outside!"

The expression of despair on the face Granlif's pilot shifted only slightly to one of disbelief.

He's not serious, Janus thought.

"Oh, I bet you think I'm joking," the angel said, shaking his head. "I was shocked too, but it's true. You see, when I saw those monsters attack Zig - I realized that they weren't looking for a meal...they were looking for you. They were coming to complete the task that they were first called to perform all those years ago."

The young man mouthed the word "no". He had seen too many painful visions already...he felt like he couldn't feel any lower than he did already.

"Shall we look back one more time?"Metatron said. He snapped his fingers, and Janus felt himself being pulled back into that awful vision...the memory of that awful ceremony.

This time, he was looking through the eyes of his past self. He looked up and saw that shadow with three eyes, and heard the chanting in that ancient, hideous language that he wanted to forget more than anything.

But this time, the vision played out in full.

"Iä! Nyog'Sothep!" the assembled crowd chanted in that foul language. "The Ruling Darkness, child of the Great God...He who reigns over the black planets, He who hath taught us marvels!"

The three-eyed black shadow gazed down at him, the red orbs promising madness beyond all reckoning.

"Servant of the Magnum Innominandum!" the voice of the man who seemed to be his father proclaimed; "I present to thee one who is descended from thy liege!"

That was not what Janus had expected to hear. He had assumed that he was to be a sacrifice to whatever foul creature this was. The shadow extended a tendril of itself, and gently caressed the boy's face.

Both Janus and his past self let out a scream of unfathomable anguish and despair as strange spheres of colors he could barely perceive began to surround him and fill his vision...

"Well-fought, everyone!" Jeremiah said as he watched the horde of tormentor demons and dark angels flee the battlefield. In spite of the Great Emperor of Darkness' efforts, the city of Dis remained under the Flame of Hope's control – a task made easier by the addition of more deceased DREAMers to their forces – Sutherland Sieg, King Kittan, Master Gundam, Psyco Gundam MK III and Super Aestivalis stood or hovered alongside Medusa, Gurren Lagann K, Perfect Strike Gundam, Getter Dragon, Elmeth, Aussenseiter, Rein Weissritter, Alteisen Reise, and Valsion while numerous Devilmen and demons cheered.

"This is all very well and good," Master Asia said as Leo Shishioh and Tara's parents joined them, "but are we ever going to take the fight to this 'Great Emperor of Darkness' ourselves? This has been little more than a stalemate!"

"Janus Olendra made a promise to return here once he had obtained Neo Granlif," Bian assured him. "And if he truly does have it, then all we must do is hold out until he returns." As he said this, a familiar cry pierced the air as a huge Threshold opened.

"Huh? Look at that!" Kittan exclaimed. "Is that the 'caelceti' thing you guys said was trapped here before?" Those who had already met Zig nodded. The gentle giant began to make chirps, whines and the odd raspberry noise.

"Lalah, any idea of what he's saying?" Kamina asked. "If Zig's back here, then..." Lalah shushed him and opened her mind and heart to the caelceti so that she could understand its words.

"The friends we left behind," the Newtype replied; "Janus' friends...they're trapped somewhere, and we need to help them escape. His power can help us get to them. He needs everyone of us except Bian, Elzam, Kyosuke and Excellen."

"So what are we waiting for?!" Kamina shouted in his usual rallying manner as Zig slowly circled the city of Dis; "Let's get going! Our friends are..."

"Now hold on, pal," Mu chimed in. "Let's be realistic here for a moment. We can't leave Hell like this – we're absolutely dead."

"I believe we should place our trust in Zig, Sir la Flaga," Bian said thoughtfully. "Zig seems to be quite intelligent – if he believed there was no way to reach them, it would not have come here in the first place."

"All right, if you say so," the ace said. "Okay, you oversized tuna, work your magic!" The caelceti began to sing in its own soothing yet invigorating way, and the consciousnesses of the Flame's most important members were suddenly yanked out of their spiritual forms...

Gray clouds covered an equally dark and gray landscape.

Simon watched as Kamina bowed profusely and apologetically toward a pair of Beastmen cops. Behind him was a large metal container that had been sealed tightly.

"What's the matter, Simon?" a voice that Simon recognized came from just behind him. He turned around to see another Kamina, dressed in his familiar trousers and cape, sitting there with his confident yet kind smile.

"Did you lose your drill? Too bad," the new Kamina said.

"Big bro?" Simon gasped as he tried to make sense of what was happening. "There's another big bro here..."

"Dumbass!" the caped Kamina declared, standing up and holding his long katana up high; "The reputation of Team Gurren echoes far and wide - when they talk about its badass leader, that paragon of masculinity, they're talking about ME! As if there could be more than one of the mighty Kamina!"

"B-b-but there's two of you here!" his little bro stammered, quickly looking back and forth between the two versions of his blood brother, father figure and mentor.

"That's right," the caped Kamina said; "So, pick the one ya like more!"

"But that's crazy, bro!" Simon said, wondering what the heck that meant, only for the caped Kamina to suddenly get in his face.

"Idiot!" the blue-haired man said; "Don't you remember...that you were the method to my madness? The one who made all my big talk more than words?" He then pointed over to the other Kamina behind Simon, who was still bowing apologetically. "Your drill is way more than that PEBBLE over there."

The caped Kamina then touched Simon's chest with one finger.

"And that's because your drill's right here," he then said. "You can't keep wasting time in this place forever. Just what is that drill of yours meant to do?"

But after only a second, the bowing Kamina suddenly grabbed Simon and forced him to bend over.

"What are you doing?" he said angrily yet frantically through clenched teeth; "Get your ass in gear and beg for forgiveness! Beg, grovel and pretend to apologize! It's the one thing we gotta do to survive..."

As the cowardly Kamina started to push Simon's head against the ground and lecture him about being submissive, Simon started to realize just what the truth was.

"My drill is...my drill...is..." the boy mumbled as he clenched a fist tightly.

"...THE ONE THAT'S GONNA PIERCE THE HEAVENS!"

As he let out this cry, the boy lashed out, delivering a tremendous uppercut to the fake Kamina before smashing him back to the ground with an equally devastating haymaker. Suddenly, the two Beastmen cops and the fake Kamina burst into cosmic dust.

The real Kamina simply grinned, knowing that he had succeeded.

"My drill is my heart and soul," Simon finally said as the real Kamina stepped off the metal container. The boy opened his clenched fist, revealing his Core Drill. Without a moment's hesitation, Simon turned around and stuck the key into the drill-shaped slot and turned it, opening the container. The container let out a burst of steam as it opened, then revealed something incredibly bright.

The entire surroundings then began to emit pillars of light as the fake reality fell apart as the dark clouds dispersed, revealing a beautiful sunrise. They were surrounded by dozens of light beams, in each of which slept a member of DREAM.

"Get going, Simon; and don't be distracted by all the what-ifs, should-of's and if-onlys," Kamina said to his bro as he looked up at the sky. "The one path you ultimately choose on your own - that is the true path you take in life." He watched as Simon reverted back to an adult. "Don't let anyone else decide it for you."

"Yeah, you're absolutely right," Simon replied with a nod.

"Don't forget that, okay?" Kamina asked. Simon nodded with a nod. Suddenly, the former pilot of Gurren looked his bro up and down, and smirked a bit.

"Hey...you grew taller than me!" he said in a half-joking whine; "When the hell did that happen?"

"Wow...so I did," Simon chuckled. The two shared a brief laugh together. Suddenly, a long moan filled the air. The two looked up and saw the gigantic caelceti flying overhead, its body aglow with blue light.

"Well, I gotta leave now," the young man said, instinctively grasping what the space whale was here for; "It's time."

"Yeah...I guess it's goodbye for real this time, isn't it?" Kamina sighed. "Take care, blood brother."

"This isn't goodbye," Simon reassured him, pressing his thumb on his chest, just over his heart; "You'll always be here, right?"

"You know it!" Kamina said with a grin.

Simon held up his Core Drill, which began to absorb some of the blue light as well as some of the light beams. This light then formed into a large drill on his hand, while the rest of his body sprouted armor just like Gurren Lagann's...

"Let's go, everyone!" he called out as he rocketed up towards the caelceti.

Without another word, Kamina turned toward one of the numerous beams of light. Simon had opened the door for them - now he and the other departed souls had to convince them to step across the threshold...

Yoko had been living a wild, myriad existence - she was a movie star, a sports sniper, a heroic bounty hunter, a fashion model, and even a pop idol. And yet through it all, Yoko couldn't shake the feeling that she was forgetting something important.

But that all changed when she realized that they were all just images on a TV screen. She reached her hand out and turned a dial, causing the TV to go black as it turned off. It then dispersed into cosmic dust as it revealed someone behind it.

"Kamina," she said calmly, although she was overjoyed to see his first love again. She then noted that they were standing on a cliff near a forest - such a setting was the place where Yoko and Kamina had first entwined their souls together in love.

"So, did you get my message?" he asked.

"Mm-hm," the red-tressed woman replied. She looked over to her right and saw Kittan standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Kamina.

"That outfit looks good on you," her second love quipped. "Of course, I wouldn't wear that in front of your students, Miss Yomako."

"Yeah..." she said with a giggle. Just then, a long, low cry filled the air. The three looked up and saw both Zig and Gurren Lagann flying overhead, the latter engulfed in a Spiral Energy aura. She then opened her hand, revealing a Core Drill that had suddenly appeared.

"Well, I guess I'm off, then," she said. She then transformed into a flash of green light and flew towards the great space whale...

Nadija, after wandering around the void thinking about what her big brother's girlfriend had said, reappeared inside the Chamber of Zakah. She immediately saw Janus - who had called her '"little sis" while she was bound to Rei Ayanami's body - in a near-catatonic state of soul-crushing despair – he stared out into space, unseeing, while his face was streaked black with tears. Then when she looked over at Metatron – her real big brother – she saw that he was watching Nia's gradual dissolution with an unfeeling stare.

Seeing Nia's suffering and Janus' despair settled it for her.

"Big brother!" she cried out, getting Metatron's attention. He turned to greet Nadija, only to see her rush over to Janus' side and gently shook him, trying to rouse him. When the girl failed to get any response, she started to weep.

"Nadija, don't go near him!" the angel cried, concerned for his little sister's welfare; "That's a monster from Outside!" But when he tried to grab her shoulder and pull her away, the girl turned and looked back at him with tearful eyes and an expression twisted with anger and hatred – emotions that she had never directed towards him before...not like this.

"No!" she said between sobs. "He's not the monster...YOU ARE! I HATE YOU!"

Metatron reached toward his little sister a second time, only for her to turn around and start whispering gently to Janus. For a moment, the angel wondered if he really was doing the right thing. But then, his gaze hardened. He grabbed Nadija by the shoulder, pulled her away from Janus and thrust her into a Threshold.

"Someday you'll understand," he said coldly, even though she was no longer there to hear him...

For as long as Akira Fudo could remember, he, Ryo Utsugi and Miki Makimura were virtually inseparable. While Fudo was the meek and quiet brains of the trio, Utsugi was the loud and outgoing brawn, while Miki served as a balance for the two boys who were so different in every way.

Even as they were walking in the park with Miki, both young men couldn't help but feel that something was off lately...they felt like they were supposed to be somewhere else, but couldn't place where. They sat on either side of their mutual friend.

"You two aren't getting tired, are you?" Miki asked. "I did kinda drag you along with me."

"No, it's fine," Utsugi said. "We've just thinking." Fudo nodded. Miki sighed and looked up at the sky. The weather was perfect – the sky was a clear blue and dotted with puffy clouds, though not enough to blot out the warm sun.

The quiet serenity of the moment was broken when a thuggish voice called out to them.

"Hey, if ain't da Three Runners!"

The trio looked over and saw three delinquent-looking young men approaching them. They both recognized them as a notorious trio who caused no end of trouble at their high school – at least until Utsugi had shown them what fear truly was. One of them was a large, bulky fellow, another was a short, squat fellow, and the third was a weasel-like fellow. Comparisons to Boss, Nuke and Mucha would not have been unrealistic.

"Hey, Dosu-Roku," Utsugi said with a smirk. "Manjiro. Masa. Not looking for a fight, are you?"

"Nah," Dosu-Roku, the large fellow, said. "We've had enough of being poked with a huntin' rifle for one lifetime!"

"Still thinkin' about doin' this n' that with yer sis?" Manjiro, the short, squat young man, said with a snicker. Masa, the weasel-like one, chuckled.

"Yeah," Dosu-Roku snickered. "She's growin' in nice and..."

Utsugi's eyes suddenly flashed with anger as he lunged at the large fellow, grabbing him by the collar and lifting him up with just one hand.

"Say that again!" the young man snarled. "Say that again, and see where it gets you!"

"I'm j-just kiddin'!" Dosu-Roku stammered, frightened of Utsugi's display of strength. "Geez, take it easy!"

"Please, just put him down, Ryo," Fudo said frantically, trying to calm his good friend down. "We all know how you feel about your sister...he's just joking!"

"Honestly, Aya really does have an unhealthy attachment to you, Ryo," Miki said with a smirk. "Seeing how you defend her, I can kinda see how it could be misinterpreted." Miki's comment, oddly, was enough to cool Utsugi's temper, and he couldn't help but laugh.

Unbeknownst to the group, someone was watching them invisibly – Medusa.

That's them, all right, she thought. They look so happy...but this world is a sham. I have to wake those two up!

She closed her eyes and focused on contacting the Demon Lord and the leader of the Devilman Army. As she did so, more clouds began to form in the sky overhead.

Dante! Akira Fudo!

Fudo and Utsugi stopped laughing and looked around when the voice sounded in their minds.

"Hey, you guys hear someone?"Fudo exclaimed.

"I heard it too," Utsugi said, noting how familiar the voice was, even though he couldn't quite place where. He felt a part of his consciousness that had been sleeping all his life starting to wake up.

"I didn't hear anything," Masa said. Miki and the three thugs concurred. The four looked up and noticed the clouds were getting denser and denser.

Akira Fudo! Dante! the voice called out again. This isn't where you belong! This isn't what you're meant to do! Remember!

Dante, Utsugi thought, grabbing his head with clenched fists as if in pain; I know that name. And that voice...it's...it's...

This isn't...where I belong, Akira thought, doing the same thing as the clouds covered the sun, making the sky completely overcast.

"Ryo, Akira!" Miki cried, shaking both of them. "Snap out of it!" Thunder began to rumble as the two young men struggled with whatever was trying to awaken inside of them.

Suddenly, whale song resounded through the air, and the clouds parted, revealing a sky ablaze with a red and orange sunset, and the shape of Zig flying overhead, surrounded by green lights. At the same time, Utsugi and Fudo finally remembered who they were. They looked at each other, and then at their clenched fists. They opened them – somehow, Core Drills had formed in their hands the moment that the whale-song began.

The two looked back at each other, knowing who they were and what they had to do.

They both closed their eyes, and shifted to their demon forms. Understandably, Miki and the three thugs nearly fell over in alarm at this sudden change. But the girl was quicker to sense that the two boys she had grown up with were still there.

"Akira? Ryo?" she said. Fudo turned to face Miki again while Utsugi, now Dante, took to the air.

"Miki, I..." he said, trying to keep tears from his eyes. The memories of the life he had lived up until this moment were still with him...and now he had to leave it all behind.

"Miki, Akira and I don't belong here," Dante said. "And my name is not Ryo Utsugi – it's Dante...Demon Lord Dante."

"What?!" Dosu-Roku exclaimed. "What's he talkin' about?!"

"This world," Medusa's voice intoned for them all to hear, "it is a prison built to keep them from achieving their true goals." The group looked up and saw the demoness hovering there.

"Whoa, giant naked demon lady!" Manjiro exclaimed.

"Dante...Akira...it's time to go," Medusa said, holding out her arm to them. "There's still a fight for you to win." Dante nodded and flew up toward Zig, though Fudo lingered, still trying to say goodbye.

But the false Miki seemed to do it for him by gently bending him toward her and planting a deep kiss on his mouth, much to his surprise.

"If there's a Miki Makimura in that world," she said gently as she backed away. "Tell her that I wish you two the best." As he took wing, Fudo smiled even though tears of sadness began to stream down his face. Finally, he tore his gaze away from his beloved Miki, flapped his huge bat-like wings and rocketed into the sky.

But Dante and Medusa paused once the humans he had known for so long became little more than dots far below them. They gazed into each others' eyes for a moment, but Dante turned away in shame.

"Medusa," he said, "I..."

Dante's beloved shook her head as she gently turned his face back to her.

"It's all right, love," she said. "I'm just happy to see you again."

Dante grimaced, and also found himself unable to hold back tears, if only for a different reason.

"If only I had been stronger," he whimpered; "I could have..." But Medusa put a finger to Dante's mouth, cutting him off.

"That was the past," she said gently; "You have a future to secure for the Demon Tribe."

Dante looked at her, then up at Zig and Fudo, who was starting to glow green with Spiral Power, and back to her again. He nodded and continued his upward flight as Medusa watched, satisfied at a job well done...

Char sat quietly on the porch of a lakeside cabin on Side 6, watching a flock of geese flying overhead. Suddenly, he felt the presence of someone else in the chair next to him. He turned to find Lalah sitting there.

"Lalah?" he exclaimed, wondering how this could be - even in this ideal world of his, Lalah Sune had long since perished.

"Char," she said gently as she got to her feet and started walking towards the lake; "It's time for us to go."

"What's going on?!" the Red Comet asked as he got up and hurried after her. "Go where?"

"...Towards tomorrow," she answered; "Towards a future where Earthnoids, the Demon Tribe and Spacenoids can all live together in harmony...this world you have trapped yourself in cannot result in such a reality." Lalah stopped once she reached the lake's edge, causing Char to stop a few paces away.

Lalah then took a step onto the lake, and then another - she was walking on the water. Char watched this in awe for a moment or two before giving chase. However, he quickly found himself waist-deep in the water.

"Lalah! Wait!" the Zeon ace cried, stretching his right hand towards her while clenching his left. "Please, I want to know! I want to see this future you so dearly wish for! Please, show me the way!"

As if in answer, he suddenly felt something in his left hand. When he opened it, he saw that he was holding a Core Drill.

"You already know the way, Char Aznable," the Neo-Indian woman said with a gentle smile; "You just need to take the first step." After pondering Lalah's words for a few seconds, Char suddenly felt the ground shake beneath him as something began to rise out of the lake - the Nightingale.

As he stood atop his personal mobile suit, the Zeon ace heard a series of high-pitched chirps in his mind, the source of which was coming from outside the colony. Char looked up and saw Zig swimming through space, followed closely by Gurren Lagann and Hi-Nu Gundam.

Char smiled as a new resolve filled his soul to the brim even as he wept over what he was about to give up...

The same cries also filled the air where Nunnally and Rolo sat, watching the world go by from a hill near the royal villa. Jeremiah had appeared before them and shown them the nature of the labyrinth.

"I see," Nunnally said, looking down at the Core Drill that had appeared in her hand. "So this is just a dream after all. I thought as much." Rolo nodded, clasping his own Core Drill. The two looked over and saw the Code Geass and Vincent waiting for them.

"Can you come with us, Jeremiah?" the boy then asked. "You can't really be..."

"It's okay, Rolo," Nunnally said, gently poking Rolo's chest, and then her own. "He's right here with us."

"That's right," Jeremiah replied; The family you grew up with and loved all hold a place in your heart...as am I."

"And you, Rolo, have Nunnally, Lelouch and everyone in DREAM," another voice came from nearby. Rolo looked up and saw Nemo standing before him, clasping something in her hands and then presenting it to the boy: a small sword-shaped trinket with a haft shaped like a small pair of feathered wings and a red gem set on it.

"A Knight's emblem?!" he exclaimed.

"I shall leave Nunnally in your care, Rolo Halliburton," Nemo said as she placed the trinket in Rolo's hands. "You will make a splendid Knight for her."

Rolo smiled and clutched both his Core Drill and the Knight's emblem as he and Nunnally transformed into spheres of light, then flew off to join their allies...

"Here you go, papa!"

A pretty little Beastman girl with cat ears gingerly placed a wreath of flowers over Viral's head, while another one, noticeably more mature, watched with a warm smile. The three, a simple family, stood out in a seemingly endless meadow filled with long grass and dotted with flowers, while their small house sat several hundred yards away.

Viral smiled and picked up the little girl, swinging her around. Suddenly, the same cry that could be heard in the other realities within the Labyrinth sounded out, catching the attention of the three Beastmen.

As Viral gazed upward, he chuckled, the truth dawning on him. His wife and daughter, who he loved with all his heart were merely crafted from his wishes and desires. In truth, the Beastman envied the ability of humans to love and to create life by entwining their souls together, something that he could not.

"I see...so this has all been a sappy dream, huh?"

Yet as he looked at his beloved and their child, they seemed to understand what he had to do. Then, Viral felt a Core Drill spontaneously appear in his grip. He looked up at the soaring space whale for a moment and then grinned a twisted grin as he turned into a flash of green light and followed the massive caelceti...

The fight against Uriel was not going well. The High Seraph wielded powerful lightning that could disrupt the circuitry of their machines, and it was starting to show – numerous mecha were crackling and sizzling from too many shocks, floating helplessly in front of the massive enemy. Only the Knights of the Round, the MP Nu Gundams and Allenby were still fighting, but they seemed to be at the end of their ropes.

"Despair, mortals," Uriel said as he prepared for one more lightning blast; "Your end is at hand." But as he did so, he was suddenly bombarded by a barrage of drill missiles, followed by a storm of rocket punches. The others looked over and saw the friends who had been trapped in the Multidimensional Labyrinth all assembled before them, with Gurren Lagann at the very front.

"Take five, guys," Simon said. "We've got this." The wounded heroes gasped in awe – somehow they had escaped!

Uriel, meanwhile, was in a full-on panic. The worst-case scenario was happening right before his eyes.

"You fools," he snarled; "YOU FOOLS!" But instead of attacking, he warped away.

"Man, and here we were all ready to whoop his ass," Judau said. "First Michael gets killed too quickly, and now that jerkass Uriel just runs away!"

"Fine by me," Domon said. "We can save our strength for the Anti-Spiral."

"But how did you guys get free?!" Allenby exclaimed. "Those prisons were tailor-made...you had everyone you ever lost back..."

"We had some help from some people from the past," Kei said, thinking of Musashi and how he guided her, Gai and even Go out of the Labyrinth; "They reminded us of why we began our fight in the first place!"

"Of course, it was painful to have to leave it all behind," Amuro said. "Probably the most heart-rending decisions we ever made." All of the escaped prisoners nodded - they would make Metatron and the Anti-Spiral pay for toying with their hearts like that.

But as they prepared to warp to the Anti-Spiral homeworld, Leila noticed something.

"Hey, we're still missing someone," she said. "Where's Neo Granlif? Where are Tara and Janus?"

"My systems detect that Janus Olendra is in the same location as Nia," Lordgenome chimed in. "Meanwhile, Tara Zifell must still be trapped in the Labyrinth."

Just then, Zig swooped through a Threshold.

"Zig's back!" Puru exclaimed. "Is he the one who helped you all escape?" The caelceti began to make noises in its own melodic language.

"It seems so," Amuro said, sensing its meaning with his mind and heart before Iophiel could translate. "The friends Janus met while he was trapped in Hell...Zig must have somehow guided them to us."

"Then we'll just have to use Zig call out to Tara in the same way," Alia said. "Right, Paul?"

"It seems so - our cousin is still having trouble letting go of the past," Paul replied. "I guess it's up to us to give her the help she needs to break out." DREAM nodded and turned toward the universe where Tara was being held while Zig's body began to shine.

"Tara!" Zero called to her. "Can you hear us?"

"Wake up, Tara!" Koji cried. "This is no time to be sleeping on the job!"

"You can't stay in there forever!" Paul cried.

"We need you to come back!" Alia said. "Everyone's counting on you!"

One by one, each member of DREAM called out words of encouragement and pleas to awaken to their trapped friend - and Zig sped those words to her.

Simon's words were the last to be sent.

"You shouldn't leave Janus all alone! Who knows what he's going through right now!"

Christmas had gone off without a hitch. In spite of their differing cultures, the two sides of her family were getting along famously. Harkness and Bellonda had made Tara's Japanese cousins squeal with delight at their Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus impersonation, handing them presents and sweets; Lugh's swordsmanship had impressed her maternal grandfather, who had been a regional kendo champion in his day; her father's sisters-in-law were exchanging recipes with her Japanese grandmother and aunts; Cedric regaled her Japanese uncles with tales of his early political career; and of course, everyone loved baby Philemon and Sophia.

But amid all this cheer, Tara couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Or rather, everything was too perfect. What was more, the dreams she had were so incredibly real, and had been growing even more vivid as Christmas had drawn closer and closer. And there was one particular element of it that stood out more strongly than the rest:

A young man with wild black hair with a streak of maroon through it. She also remembered that he had sad eyes – one blue and one green; Tara dreamed of embracing him, feeling him and letting him feel her, and even of sharing their very souls. When she thought about him, her heart ached. Yet for the life of her, she could never remember his name when she woke up.

"So then, th-th bear..." Harkness said, chuckling uncontrollably, his voice slurred by copious amounts of eggnog; "he slips in...into th' shirt and...and..."

"Okay, Harkness, we get it," one of Tara's Japanese uncles groaned in surprisingly good Britannian; "It was hilarious. We got it the first time you told it." Meanwhile, one of her Japanese aunts turned to her, noticing that she didn't seem to be enjoying herself.

"So, Tara, have you started dating yet?" she asked. "You're such a pretty girl – the boys at Ashford should be all over you."

As Tara pondered an answer, the heartache she felt when thinking about the boy came back, this time more intense than ever. The wind outside began to howl, the blizzard intensifying almost as if in response to the girl's heartache.

"God, that's some wind!" Lugh commented. "Glad we're all inside."

"I'm...waiting for the right guy," Tara said in reply to her aunt's question. "My dream man, I guess."

"What about that Lelouch fellow?" another of her aunts said, recalling Haruhi's story about the boy. The mention of her classmate caused images to flash in her brain – bits and pieces of the dream. The heartache got more intense, and was now causing her genuine agony.

"Tara, dear, you don't look well," Elina said, noticing her niece's pain. But as the woman rose to help her, Tara suddenly heard voices calling out to her in her mind.

"Tara! Can your hear us?" "Wake up, Tara! This is no time to be sleeping on the job!" "You can't stay in there forever!" "We need you to come back! Everyone's counting on you!" "C'mon, geek queen! Up n' at 'em!" "Please, the world needs your strength!" "We've got a fight to win!"

She pushed Elina away and staggered toward the front door.

"I-I'm sorry," she said as she opened it and stepped out into the snowstorm. "I need some air."

"Is she bloody loony?" Bellonda exclaimed as she got up from the table. "It's a blizzard out there! And she's not even dressed for it!" The rest of the family followed suit, save for Gilbert and Haruhi, who looked at each other as if they understood what was happening to their daughter...

The streets were empty of people and cars – no one in their right mind would go out in a blizzard like this.

But Tara Zifell was not in her right mind. She was staggering through the storm as voices she remembered from her dreams resounded continuously through her mind. But time and time again, she failed to place names and faces to the voices. Other parts of the dream, which seemed so damnably like memories played back in her head. Most of all, she was struggling to find the name of that boy she fought alongside – the one who had shattered a wall of her own self-loathing with a blade of passion, and embraced her at the end of the world amid a blizzard of cherry blossoms.

Through the cascade of memories and cries from those almost-recognizable voices, she heard these words:

"You shouldn't leave Janus all alone! Who knows what he's going through right now!"

"Janus..." she murmured. As that name passed her lips, she clenched her hands into fists. All of the pieces were falling into place - she understood what was going on, and what she had to do. Simultaneously, the blizzard began to rapidly subside, and the clouds began to slowly part. She looked up, she saw the silhouette of a magnificent winged whale, with dozens of green lights flitting around it. Only a few snowflakes continued to fall.

But the pain in her heart didn't go away. All that had changed was its underlying cause.

"Tara!" a familiar voice called out to her – her Uncle Lugh. She looked over and saw her extended family running towards her...the family she had shared twenty Christmases with. Elina had even wrapped the babies in warm clothing and carried them in their baskets so they wouldn't be left at the house all alone. They all raced to embrace her all at once.

"What in th' world were ya bloody thinkin', runnin' out into a blizzard like that?" Harkness scolded her.

"Harkness almost had a heart attack thinking about you wandering out all alone in the cold!" one of her Japanese aunts said.

Tara smiled widely, even as tears began to stream down her face like a river. Then, in an act that was more difficult and painful than any of the dozens of battles she had taken part in, pushed them all away.

"You all...I'm sorry," she said. "I-I can't stay here."

"What do you mean?" Cedric exclaimed. As Tara tried to find the words, she looked and saw her parents approaching. Just seeing the look on their faces was all she needed to understand that they knew exactly what was going on.

"It's time for her to go." Gilbert said to his relatives and in-laws. "It's time for her to spread her wings and leave the nest - just as all fledglings must." The rest of the collective Zifell and Amakuni clans looked at each other, confused about what the two who bound them together by marriage were implying.

"Well," her maternal grandfather said, "I know she's headed off for university soon, but..."

"No, Papa," Haruhi said. "She's leaving this world. Forever."

"This world," Gilbert explained; "it was created as a prison for Tara by a force that doesn't want her to achieve what she set out to do – make a world where people can forge their own future." For a moment, there was only silence, save for the low calling of the caelceti that fly overhead.

"I see," Cedric said. "Keeping someone imprisoned just for that...it doesn't seem right at all." Both families nodded in agreement.

"So, you're not going to try and stop me?" Tara asked. Seeing her family just accept this explanation without protest only increased her pain.

"Why would we?" Harkness laughed. "Some family we'd be if we tried t' keep ya from pursuin' yer dreams!"

As if that had been the answer of the very universe she inhabited, her parrot Zengar swooped down and alighted on her shoulders, just behind her neck. It opened its wings up wide, causing Neo Granlif to form around her.

She watched the mech's systems activate, and for Xemmey and Xengar's images to appear in their respective places.

"I'm sorry, Tara," Xemmey said. "This must be agonizing for you."

"It was great while it lasted," she said. "But everyone's waiting for me. Especially Janus." Xengar nodded solemnly. With that, Neo Granlif rocketed up towards the space whale in order to make its way out of the Labyrinth...

The Anti-Spiral's frustration was increasing by the moment as Nia continued to resist the analysis being performed by her master.

"Your actions are baffling, Irregular," the Anti-Spiral said, the god-like being's monotone disguising its annoyance; "How can you resist us so? You are a virtual life-form spliced with the genome of the Spiral races, created by Lady Iophiel and Lord Metatron himself for our personal use."

"If a Spiral race were to rise up and gain the power to threaten the infinite realities, you were to awaken and become our messenger. That is your entire purpose, your reason for being. The fact that you met and fell in love with a Spiral warrior is nothing more than a coincidence...you are not unique or special."

Nia wriggled in her invisible bonds, merely grunting as she tried to withstand the pain of having her material body being broken down atom by atom.

"And yet none of our messengers have put up this level of resistance before," the Anti-Spiral continued. "Perhaps if we probe the very center of your data banks, we can find the answer...and through that, find a way to prevent the threat of a true Spiral Nemesis forevermore without resorting to the final ritual."

"No matter how deeply you probe my being," Nia retorted defiantly; "You'll never understand!" Janus was awe-struck by the amount of effort Simon's beloved was putting into keeping her material form together.

"We do not need to understand," the living shadow replied coldly; "We simply need to KNOW."

"Then you have no hope of defeating them," she said, maintaining her defiant tone; "They're coming...I'm sure of it."

"Really, now?" Metatron chuckled. "You saw it yourself - we placed your so-called 'friends' in realities that they not only cannot escape, but will CHOOSE not to escape from. We gave them exactly what they wanted...worlds of peace and happiness with their loved ones."

"It doesn't matter," Nia replied defiantly; "Simon and the others WILL come!"

As if to affirm Nia's faith in DREAM, the ring on her finger began to pulse and glow, making an audible thrumming sound. When the ring started to pulse faster and faster, the Anti-Spiral's vacant expression turned to one of sheer shock and dismay, while Metatron's smug expression turned deathly pale as he realized what was happening, just as Uriel appeared...

No...this...can't be...they couldn't actually have...

"Lord Metatron, DREAM has..."

His words were interrupted when a massive drill somehow burst out of Nia's ring - followed by the rest of Gurren Lagann. This was followed immediately by Neo Granlif appearing, then by a small army of Lagann-type Gunmen, out of which rose a member of DREAM, each with crossed arms and eyes filled with defiant resolve.

Both Nia's and Janus' bonds were severed - and as each fell, they were caught by their respective loved ones. Nia, having been rendered naked by the shattering of the Anti-Spiral's bonds, was quickly draped in Simon's coat as he landed in her arms.

"I'm here, Nia.," Simon said with a smile, "Sorry to keep you waiting."

Meanwhile, Janus was picked up by Neo Granlif, and blinked with surprise to see it here.

"Tara?" he murmured, unsure of whether he was still hallucinating from the depths of his despair.

"Sorry, Jan," she said. "I got caught up in my past."

"Impossible?! How could sentient lifeforms escape the Multidimensional Labyrinth?!" the Anti-Spiral cried out in horror; "How could you reject the very worlds you so desired?!"

"Don't underestimate us!" Simon cried. "We don't give a DAMN about time or space or multi-dimensional whatevers! Forcing your way on a path you choose, and doing it YOUR way! Never dwelling on the past, but never forgetting it...focusing on the future, but always thinking about the present we live in! THAT'S THE WAY DREAM ROLLS!"

As the heroes exuded a blaze of pure Sephirot energy from their combined wills, Uriel and Metatron retreated, with one thought on the latter's mind...

Euzeth was right. There IS no satisfying people.
