Mona had been rightly paranoid about saying anything else over the phone, so they had agreed to meet in the Brew. Kara and Wren had barely spoken as they waited for Mona to arrive, both just itching to find out what the girl knew. Kara had been trying to figure out how the Montgomery's had managed to hide the truth for so long. Why had Aria never told them the truth? Mona soon arrived at the cafe and after a quick hug from Kara, swiftly began to tell them what secret's Mike had revealed.
"Mike said that it all started when Aria and Ali become friends...she changed. She was getting anxious, even depressed. You remember what Alison was like...I guess it hit Aria more than she let on. Her parents were worried, they kept taking her to the doctor's but all they'd do is write Aria prescriptions. She was only getting worse. Then Labor Day rolled around…Mike said she had a complete mental breakdown the next day. She tore up their living room, she was completely manic. They had to institutionalize her. They moved out of the state but close enough that they could visit her. He said his parents would try to hide when they came back to town, they were worried that someone would spot them and start asking questions" Mona began, as Kara shared a look with Wren.
"What happened? Did she ever talk about that night?" Wren insisted.
"She was so drugged up; Mike says she didn't remember anything. But in the early days in Radley, she kept saying the same thing over and over again. 'Ali, what did you do? What did you do?'" Mona exclaimed, as Wren grit his teeth.
"What did the doctor's think caused it? Her breakdown?" Kara questioned.
"A traumatic experience. They think her mind made her forget to protect herself" Mona explained.
"So…she might not even remember being depressed? Anything about Radley?" Kara realised as Mona nodded.
"How convenient" Wren muttered, angrily.
"It doesn't actually mean that Alison killed Bethany. We still don't know enough about that night-" Kara began, but Wren cut her off.
"It's basically a confession, Kara!" Wren exclaimed, raising his voice.
"I'm just saying we need to be smart about this. Maybe we can find some of these doctors that used to look after her" Kara explained.
"Radley's past is pretty seedy. I think it'll be hard to find a paper trail" Mona sighed, as Wren ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
"There is one guy we know who would have worked there when Aria was there. You both know him" Kara suggested, as Wren's eyes widened.
"Eddie Lamb" He realised, remembering the older man well.
"I can start looking for him now. It might take some time; he's been off the radar for years. Don't worry, Wren, I'll keep your name out of it" Mona stated, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Why'd you need to do that?" Kara frowned, feeling out of the loop.
"Wren and Eddie never exactly saw eye to eye" Mona mumbled, as Kara thought back to the one conversation she had with Eddie.
"You and the Doctor don't get along?" A voice boomed from behind her.
Kara turned around to see a tall man, wearing a white uniform, seeming to be a member of staff. He had a friendly face, but she could see there was something he was desperate to say. It seemed to be on the tip of his tongue.
"He just bugs me, that's all…Eddie" Kara stated, reading the man's name badge.
"Are you a friend of Spencer's?" Eddie inquired.
"Yes, why?" Kara asked.
"From the moment he arrived here, it was for the wrong reasons. You should keep him away from her" Eddie told her.
"I'll try" Kara frowned.
"Be careful around him" Eddie warned her, as he turned on his heel to walk away, leaving her confused.
"Did you know Eddie when Bethany was in Radley?" Kara questioned, as Wren slowly nodded.
"Why did he-" Kara began, but Wren quickly cut her off.
"I better update A.D, you know how touchy they get when they're out of the loop" Wren announced, as he stood up.
"Okay…just don't do anything stupid, yeah?" Kara insisted as Wren leaned down to press a soft kiss against her forehead.
"Promise" He replied, as she leaned forward to press a chaste kiss to his lips.
Mona raised an eyebrow at her friend as Wren walked away from them, obviously having picked up on the tension that never used to be there. Kara hoped Mona would be able to find Eddie, maybe he would even have the answers about Wren that she needed.
"What's wrong?" Mona inquired, seeing the frown on Kara's face.
"He's definitely about to do something stupid" Kara sighed, as she watched him walk out the café.
"You guys have a lot in common" Mona teased, making Kara roll her eyes.
"Cheeky bitch" Kara grinned, throwing a chip on her plate at Mona, who giggled.
Kara received a message from Jenna a few hours later, asking her to meet on the third floor of the Radley. Kara had been questioning whether to even go when she received a follow-up message, stating they needed to talk about Sara. Kara was still interested in finding out what exactly Wren had done to the blonde, so she had agreed. Wren was still AWOL and hadn't been answering any of Kara's messages, which concerned her more by the minute. She was walking past the Radley bar, when she spotted a familiar face. She almost walked past them, when she saw what they were holding between their fingers.
"Well, this is awfully depressing" Kara announced, as she hopped onto the barstool beside Ezra.
"Jesus, Kara. You almost gave me a heart attack" Ezra flinched, as he tried to hide what he was holding.
"Please tell me that I'm just hallucinating and you're not actually planning on proposing to Aria" Kara exclaimed, making Ezra scoff.
"Too late" Ezra muttered, bringing his glass of whiskey to his lips.
"And she refused?" Kara guessed, as Ezra nodded sadly.
"Ouch, that's gotta' hurt. Not surprising though really. Where were you going to have the reception? Your old classroom?" Kara teased, making Ezra roll his eyes.
"You've never liked me, have you Kara?" Ezra inquired, as Kara mulled over his comment.
"No, not really" Kara shrugged, holding her arm up for the bartender to come over to them.
"Guess your off the guest list then" Ezra suggested, as Kara chuckled lightly.
"Nice. That was a good one" Kara exclaimed, patting Ezra on the back a little harder than she needed to.
"What can I get you?" The bartender inquired.
"I'll have a vodka lemonade and whatever he's been drowning his sorrows in. Thanks" Kara replied, as Ezra raised an eyebrow at her.
"What are you doing here, Kara?" Ezra inquired.
"Having a drink. It's a free country-" Kara started, but was quickly cut off by the older man.
"What are you doing in Rosewood?" Ezra insisted, turning on his barstool to face her.
"Maybe I'm feeling nostalgic. Reconnecting with old friends" Kara suggested, as the bartender brought their drinks over.
"Bullshit. You used to love the girls. You'd have died for Aria when you were in High School but now…you wouldn't piss on her if she were on fire" Ezra went on, making Kara frown.
"And what about you? You were supposed to be so love with Nicole, and now suddenly you're proposing to Aria? It doesn't really add up" Kara pointed out.
"I guess there's a lot about our stories that don't make sense" Ezra mumbled, holding up his new drink.
"Cheers to that" Kara exclaimed, clinking their glasses together.
Just as Kara brought the drink to her lips, realization hit her like a bus. Pieces of the puzzle finally fitting together. She knew why Ezra was really there, it had been staring her in the face the whole time.
"Stories…your story. You're still writing your book, aren't you?" Kara gaped, as Ezra took a long gulp of his whiskey.
"Now that would be diabolical" Ezra replied, with a small smirk.
"Damn, I have to admit…I'm impressed. So, you know about everything that's been happening? About A.D?" Kara inquired, as Ezra's smirk grew.
"I know enough. I'm staying out of their way, and they stay out of mine. I'm here to write my book, they give me the material I need. It's a win, win" Ezra explained.
"…Did Wren know about your book?" Kara couldn't help but ask.
"Trouble in paradise?" Ezra suggested, as Kara rolled her eyes.
"Fine, I'll just ask him myself" Kara announced, as she jumped down from the barstool.
"Suit yourself…he probably won't tell you the truth though" Ezra muttered, stopping her just as she was about to walk away.
"So, he did know" Kara sighed, not understanding why Wren never told her about it.
"He even visited me a couple of times. Your boyfriend can be persuasive when he wants to be" Ezra scoffed.
"What did he want to know?" Kara questioned.
"Mostly what I knew about Bethany" Ezra shrugged, but Kara could tell there was more that he wasn't saying.
"Mostly?" She insisted.
"He wanted to know about Tyler too" Ezra admitted, as the frown on Kara's face grew.
"And what did you tell him?" Kara queried.
"Not much. Tyler was good at hiding his tracks. But he was looking into Radley. He had been looking into the patients there…he might have known about Bethany" Ezra explained, as Kara's eyes widened.
What would Wren have done if Tyler had found out about Bethany, if he figured out Wren was her brother? What lengths would Wren have taken to keep him quiet?
"This better be important, I have more to worry about today than your new girlfriend" Kara announced, as Jenna opened the hotel door for her.
"You couldn't be more wrong about that. Sara's losing it" Jenna informed her.
"What do you mean?" Kara frowned, as Jenna quickly shut the door behind her, a nervous look on her face.
"She almost blabbed your names to Emily when she snuck into our room earlier. Seeing Wren…it's totally thrown her off" Jenna explained.
"What happened with them?" Kara questioned, as Jenna raised an eyebrow at her.
"I thought you and the good doctor told each other everything" Jenna stated, making Kara roll her eyes.
"I know that he locked Sara up for three days, but what did he actually do? Did he…did he hurt her?" Kara asked, not sure if she really wanted the answer.
"No. Not physically. But he made it clear that if she didn't do exactly what he wanted, then the torture that Cece put you through would seem like child's play" Jenna went on.
"She's scared of him?" Kara guessed, making Jenna scoff.
"She's not the only one. When he came round here earlier, I thought he was going to-" Jenna began, but Kara quickly cut her off.
"Wren was here? When?" Kara insisted, confused.
"About an hour ago. I messaged you both. He turned up first" Jenna replied, as Kara's forehead wrinkled.
"Why? I thought you and Sara were 'besties' now?" Kara pointed out.
"I received a phone call today…from A.D. They were very insistent that I warn you both about how unstable Sara is" Jenna explained, watching as the cogs in Kara's brain began to turn.
"Sara's about as threatening as a wet paper towel" Kara scoffed.
"But she knows things. She could go to the police. How sure are you that you've covered your tracks?" Jenna retorted.
Jenna was right. They both knew it. Too many people knew about Wren and Kara's involvement with A.D now, who would likely sell them both out if they needed to. Sara was a problem. Kara was seriously beginning to miss her easy life in England.
The sun had just gone down when there was a knock on Kara's hotel door, catching her attention. She rushed forward, ripping the door back and praying that it would be Wren standing on the other side. She must have called him thirty times since he left the Brew that morning. She was surprised to see Jason with two pizza's in hands, a soft smile on his face.
"Jase…what are you doing here?" Kara frowned, as he held the pizza's up.
"I come bearing gifts" Jason grinned, making Kara shake her head fondly.
"Well when you put it that way…" Kara trailed off, as she dragged him into the hotel room with a laugh.
"Nice place" Jason announced, as he looked around the hotel room.
"Yeah, it's got a microwave and everything" Kara joked, taking one of the pizza's room his hands.
"Still, better than our old place" Jason shrugged, as Kara went to sit on the bed, with Jason following her.
"Nah, our place at least had some character" Kara insisted.
"Yeah, and mould" Jason teased, making Kara giggle as she opened her pizza.
"Did it physically hurt you to order this as usual?" Kara smirked, seeing the look of disgust on Jason's face.
"You're the only person I'd ever force myself to buy Hawaiian pizza for" Jason grimaced, opening his own pizza box.
"You just have no taste" Kara scoffed, taking a bite with a grin plastered over her face.
"…Any word from him?" Jason inquired, knowing Kara was worried about her boyfriend.
"No. Nothing. He thinks your sister hurt Bethany, maybe even was the one to kill her. I don't know what he'd be willing to do…I really don't" Kara sighed.
"You think he'd…?" Jason trailed off, not even wanting to say the words.
"He wants his revenge. He wants the truth. I almost killed Charles and Cece…what's to stop him from going a step further?" Kara pointed out, as Jason shook his head.
"You wouldn't have," Jason told her, as Kara's forehead wrinkled in confusion.
"What?" She questioned.
"You wouldn't have killed them. You would have stopped at the last second" Jason insisted, as Kara's frown deepened.
"How can you be so sure? I'm not" Kara confessed, as Jason gave her a small smile.
"Because I know you, Kara. You're a good person. You always have been" Jason replied.
Kara opened her mouth to respond but was cut off by Jason's phone ringing, as she went to grab the device.
"Leave it for a second. Can we…" Jason trailed off with a groan when the phone started ringing once again.
"It's Hanna" Kara frowned, handing him the device.
"Hanna?" Jason questioned, but was quickly cut off by the blonde on the other end of the call.
"We think A.D is coming for Ali!" Hanna exclaimed, panic clear in her voice.
"Wait, slow down. What's happened?" Jason asked, as he put the call on speakerphone.
"I just got a call from Archer's burner phone. They said 'First you turn her in, and then you leave her all alone. Stupid bitches'. They're coming for her!" Hanna insisted.
"Why'd you think it's A.D?" Kara queried.
"Kara? What are you doing there?" Hanna asked, quickly becoming distracted by the information.
"Not really important right now, Han" Kara insisted.
"Since when are you guys hanging out again?" Hanna couldn't help but ask.
"Hanna!" Both Jason and Kara exclaimed in exasperation at the same time.
"They had a British accent. Archer was British. It can't be a coincidence" Hanna stated, as Kara felt her heart stop for a moment.
"British accent…where is Ali? Is she at home?" Kara questioned, quickly standing up from the bed.
"Yeah. Look, Spencer and I are on the outskirts, we'll never get there in time. I can't get through to the others. Can you-" Hanna began, but Kara cut her off.
"We're already on our way" Kara exclaimed, as the pair rushed to the door.
"You really think Wren's going after Ali?" Jason frowned, as he pulled up to the road connected to the Dilaurentis' house.
"Hanna said it was a British guy on the other end of that call. And after what Aria was saying about Ali in Radley…everything is pointing to her being the killer" Kara explained, as Jason looked conflicted.
"We're going there to stop him, right?" Jason questioned, as Kara nodded vehemently.
"This isn't the way. I want whoever killed Bethany to rot behind bars" Kara insisted, as Jason looked relieved.
"Shit…why is the door open?" Jason gulped, as he pulled up to the Dilaurentis house.
"C'mon, we might already be too late!" Kara panicked, as she ran out of the car and towards the house.
She could hear a loud bang from inside, quickly followed by a female scream. Just as she was about to walk through the door, she heard a concerning sound in the distance.
"Hanna must have called the cops" Kara realised, hearing the familiar sound of sirens.
The pair rushed inside, slamming the door behind them, not wanting to be disturbed by the police. Everything was eerily quiet for a moment before there was a crashing sound which came from Ali's bedroom. Kara was the first one into the room, remembering the layout of the Dilaurentis house like the back of her hand. She gasped as she saw a masked figure with their hands wrapped around Alison's neck, trying to choke the life out of her. What the hell was Wren doing?
"Let go of her!" Jason cried as he lunged towards the figure, pushing the attacker off his sister.
They wrestled for a moment, as the figure managed to pull Jason into a headlock, easily getting the upper hand. Suddenly Jason seemed to throw himself onto his back, pulling the figure down with him, and managing to roll on top of the masked stranger. He sent a hard punch to the attacker's face, grimacing as part of their silicon mask came off with it.
"Jason, watch out!" Kara cried, when she saw the masked attacker pick up a nearby jewellery box that had fallen to the floor.
Kara rushed forward as the figure sent the object slamming onto Jason's head, knocking him out instantly. The attacker then threw Jason's unconscious form towards her, giving them space to run through the bedroom door.
"Jason? Hey, can you hear me?" Kara questioned, as she shook him lightly.
Jason groaned in pain, his hand flying to his forehead, as blood dripped down from the wound there. Kara let out a sigh of relief, her heart having stopped when he didn't reply for a moment.
"Go get him" Jason mumbled, looking up at Kara with sad eyes.
With a quick nod, she carefully helped move him into a sitting position on the bed, worry clear on her face. She didn't want to leave him. He could have a concussion, and Ali seemed too out of it from where she was still hunched against the wall—
"Go. It's okay" Jason insisted, seeing the conflicted look on her face.
Before she knew what she was doing, Kara leaned forward, pressing their foreheads together for a moment and shutting her eyes. She had to go. Jason let out a shaky breath as Kara quickly pulled away, running out of the room without another look.
Kara only just made it out of the house in time, as she heard the police knocking down the front door. She knew the masked figure would make their way out the back, probably already having an exit plan in place. Kara felt anger boiling through her veins, as she sprinted to keep up with the attacker, watching them jump up to grip onto the top of a nearby fence.
"Stop!" Kara yelled, running forward to grab their legs and tugging them back down.
"What are you doing?!" They shouted, with a distinctive British accent, whipping their head around.
"You…you're not Wren" Kara realised, taking a step back.
They were taller than her boyfriend, but from the lack of light she could barely make out any of their features. She could see where Jason had ripped part of their silicon mask on their cheek, and even though she couldn't see their eyes, she knew they were glaring at her. Before she could react, they had grabbed her by the shoulders and slammed her against the fence.
"You really shouldn't have followed me here" They warned her, as Kara felt a shiver of fear go down her back.
"Your British?" Kara questioned, hearing them chuckle lightly.
"You really think it would be that easy to figure out who I am?" The masked figure mocked, as their accent changed mid-sentence to sound French.
"Are you A.D?" Kara frowned, as their hands slipped down from her shoulders.
"What makes you think A.D is just one person?" The figure pointed out, moving to the side and jumping up to grab the top of the fence once again.
"Where's Wren?" Kara called after them.
"Getting rid of a problem" The masked figure replied, as they pushed themself over the fence, effortlessly.
Sara zipped up her suitcase with shaking fingers, trying to stay calm. She needed to get out of Rosewood. She thought she could trust Jenna, but she had been wrong. Dragging her suitcase off the bed, she rushed towards the hotel door. She froze on the spot when she saw that there was someone waiting for her outside. The same person she was trying to run away from.
"Hello Sara" Wren exclaimed, taking a step forward.
Sara quickly tried to close the door, but Wren stuck his foot out, stopping her from doing so. He roughly pushed his way into the room, as Sara took a few steps back, fear clear on her face.
"Leave me alone" Sara cried, as Wren took a step forward.
"You really need to learn when to keep your mouth shut, Sara. Jenna told me what you said to Emily. I thought I already warned you about what would happen if you ever got in my way" Wren exclaimed, a dark look in his eyes.
"I'm tired of being afraid of you, Wren. That changes today" Sara replied, as Wren chuckled.
"Oh really? And why's that?" Wren questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"I'll tell her. I'll tell Kara what you did" Sara announced, making Wren frown.
"Oh yeah…I know about that. Tyler would still be alive if it wasn't for you. Do you really think she'll forgive you for that?" Sara went on
"And what makes you think you're leaving this room?" Wren pointed out, as Sara audibly gulped.
"You wouldn't. You don't have the guts for it" Sara exclaimed, taking another step back.
"Let's find out…" Wren trailed off, as he turned and slammed the door shut, his hands balling into fists.
His eyes snapped up as he heard a clicking sound behind him and slowly turned around to see Sara with a gun in her hand. He could see her hands shaking, as tears filled in her eyes.
"Get on your knees," Sara told him, stalking forward, raising the weapon to Wren's head.
"I said get on your knees!" Sara houted, as she came to a halt a meter in front of him.
With gritted teeth, Wren did as he was told, slowly kneeling on the floor, his eyes never leaving the gun. Sara may have been holding the weapon, but she was the only one with fear on their face.
"Hands behind your head. Now! Or I will shoot you in the goddamn face!" Sara insisted, panic in her voice.
Raising an eyebrow, Wren did this, hiding his hands behind his head as he fiddled with the sleeve of his shirt.
"Say goodbye Wren" Sara exclaimed, almost pressing the gun to his forehead.
In a split second, Wren had lunged forward, shoving the gun away from his face, as a bullet uselessly fired into the wall. In the next second, he was back on his feet, the knife that he had concealed in the sleeve of his shirt exposed, as he grabbed Sara by the back of her head. Once. Twice. Three times he pushed the sharp blade into her stomach as she cried out in pain, her mouth going slack.
"Goodbye" Wren snapped, as blood dripped from Sara's lips.
Ripping the knife away from her bloody body, he heard her let out a shaky breath that he knew would be her last. He could see the shock in her eyes, as they slowly fluttered shut. She had never really believed he would kill her. And that had led to her downfall. He dropped her lifeless body to the ground, as he heard his phone begin to ring. He quickly picked up the call, knowing who it would be.
"Is it done?" The mechanical voice on the other end questioned.
"Yes. Now for your end of the deal" Wren insisted, surprised by the coldness in his own voice.
He heard his phone bleep, clicking on a video message that had been sent, letting out a sigh of relief when he saw the contents of the video. Jason was sitting on a bed, with Alison on one side of him and Kara on the other, a wet cloth in her hand as she pressed it to his head wound.
"You saved his life. Well done" The mechanical voice stated, still on the line.
That morning when Wren contacted A.D, he was told he needed to get rid of Sara. By any means necessary. He had refused at first, he was tired of being the masked figure's lapdog, but they had quickly changed his mind. A trap had been set. But it wasn't for Alison like the others thought…it was for Jason. A.D knew that Hanna would call Jason after not being able to get through to any of her friends and that he would come to save Alison. After A.D's fight with Jason, he had sent Wren a picture of the injured man, stating if Wren didn't do as he asked, then another Kara's exes would end up dead.
"I did it for Kara. If something happened to him…" Wren trailed off, with a sigh.
"She still loves him; you know that right?" The mechanical voice pointed out, as Wren gripped the phone harder in his hand.
"She loves me too" Wren insisted.
"But will she when she learns what you've done?" A.D replied as they hung up the call, leaving Wren in silence, with a body at his feet.
