The Slayers and the mercenaries who helped them came out of the Path of the Dead and returned to the entrance of the gorge that led to it.

"Where are the two keepers?" Cortes asked.

"We lost them during the flight," Sherman replied. "I think they disappeared just before we returned in the warriors' necropolis."

"When the Pack swooped on us? They must have been torn to pieces..."

Suddenly, their radios began to crackle and they heard the voice of Commander Torres.

"Warning to all units! The Guard has gone rogue, I repeat the Guard has gone rogue. They already killed four of our men. Do not return to the City!"

"An insurgency?" Custer said, disturbed by this surprising and grave news. "How? Why?"

By observing the attitude and the look of the Slayers, he realized that they had something to do with this.

"How did they discovered that we were responsible?" One of them wondered. "No one else was there!"

"The jungle had eyes and ears it seems," Arana said. "The rumors are true, the guards know how to talk to beasts and birds!"

"Don't be stupid!" Ford retorted to him. "Someone was watching us..."

"Well, they want our heads now! Let's go back to the vehicles and get the hell out of here!" McNamara suggested.

But as they were about to leave, some of the mercenaries who were supposed to guard the pool came running.

"Sherman! The vehicles had been sabotaged!" One of them warned.

He should have expect it. The guards had sent men to spy on them and as soon as they had been informed about the discovery that the Slayers were behind the attack on Brunet's platoon, they had been ordered to sabotage the vehicles to prevent InGen troops from leaving while other guards would come in numbers to deal with them.

"We can't go back to the camp, they will wait for us there. We must remain in the darkness of the jungle but let's not linger here," Sherman declared. "The saboteurs are probably watching us... Custer, call back the men who are still by the pool and tell them to catch us up."

Followed by his men and the mercenaries, Sherman set off towards the southeast.

"And the Indominus and her minions?" They could leave the mountain if no one keep watch over the pool," Cortès remarked.

"With the dinosaurs on one side and the guards on the other, the men left there would be in great danger if they were ordered to stay," Sherman said. "Moreover, the more we will be, the less they will be tempted to attack us."

"Let's call back the Archangel and leave this island for good!" Faraci suggested.

"It can't take us all," Sherman reminded him, "and I refuse to leave behind any of you and abandon them to their fate. This happens because of us. Custer, you and the others will evacuate first."

Custer nodded and Sherman turned to Parker.

"You'll go with them, Damian."

"No, I'm a slayer! My place is at your side! I will not leave without you and Olivia," the young man protested.

"You don't seem to realize that we are no longer hunting but at war now!" Sherman said. "Among the guards, there are people who have already killed in cold blood, many times, and who won't hesitate a single second before tearing off your heart just because you wear this helmet and bears the tattoo of Saint George on your forearm! We are nothing more than prey for them... You will go in the Archangel, that's an order, not a request..."

Parker looked down and nodded reluctantly.

"Once they will be evacuated, where will we go?" Olsen asked Sherman.

The latter pointed to the southern summit of the Misty Mounts, visible through a gap as they approached the top of a slope.

"At the top of this mountain. The place is quite close to the coast and easily defendable against enemies climbing the slopes. We will hold there until the arrival of an extraction team. But we must hurry! Otherwise, our way will be blocked."
