Frozen by fear in their vehicle due to the sight of the volley of incandescent rocks that was heading towards them, Dearing and Leon still had not moved while the first volcanic bombs reached the surrounding area, projecting burning pieces and shards of rock on the vegetation when they crashed, setting it on fire.
Dearing finally pulled herself together and started the jeep.
She took the same road that she and Grady used earlier and as she was changing gears one by one, Leon kept casting worried looks all around.
Several bombs landed around the paddock and the camp, and even in the middle of the jungle on both sides of the road.
One of them hit the ground so close to the jeep that a shard thrown by the impact pierced the door's window near which Leon was sitting and passed a few centimetres from the intern's face, whistling like a rifle's bullet before bouncing against the opposite door and land on the bench seat, smoking.
They heard a roar in the sky, the one of the engines of one of the water-bombing planes, hit by a bomb a few moments earlier as it fled the surroundings of Mount Sibo. It now threatened to crush in the jungle east of the Cartago.
Shortly after, the bench seat started to catch fire where the shard of rock had landed and Leon grabbed a blanket under the passenger seat to use it in an attempt to extinguish the flames.
"Faster! I don't want to die as a virgin and without seeing the end of the Star Wars sequel trilogy!" The panicked young man whined.
Her composure being put to a severe test, Dearing couldn't help but to retort sharply, hoping to quiet him so she could concentrate better.
"Shut up! You won't miss anything given the poor quality of the first two parts! J.J Abrams and Rian Johnson are clowns you hear me?! Clowns! And don't tell me about Kath..."
"Watch out!" Leon suddenly shouted.
A tree, whose trunk's base had been hit hard by a bomb, fell on the road and Dearing was driving too fast to brake in time.
The collision was inevitable.
Leon placed his arms in front of his face in order to protect it from the imminent impact.
