The girl had been absolutely motionless ever since Security Officer Din Sava and his partner had come into their commander's chambers to guard her. His orders had been very clear not to engage her in any way, but even if they had wanted to, they couldn't have. She had not opened her eyes or even moved her head and it didn't even look like she was breathing. So they stood with weapons drawn and watched intently, just as their training dictated.

It wasn't more than a few minutes into their assignment, however, that something very strange happened. Cutting through the silence in the room, Din began to hear a soft rumbling sound. It was low and simply audible at first but before long, he could "feel" the sound vibrating the air around him. Where it was coming from, he couldn't tell. It seemed to be everywhere in the room at once, having no focal point, no specific place of origin.

His eyes began to scan the room for any kind of disturbance that could be making the irritating sound and as he looked at the prisoner, she suddenly appeared very odd. She still hadn't moved at all but the space around her seemed blurry and out of focus. It was if she was somehow bending light that was passing near her. As he continued to stare at her to comprehend what he was seeing, his head began to ache and he became nauseous. The longer he looked, the worse it got until he finally had to ignore his strict training. He lowered his weapon, closed his eyes and brought his hand to his forehead to see if he could somehow ease the mounting pressure inside his skull.

The pain persisted, building and building as the rumbling was getting louder. It actually seemed as if the sound was now emanating from inside his brain threatening to explode his head outward like a thermal detonator. He opened his eyes again in time to not only feel a thunderous crack of energy all around him but also watch in amazement as his partner was lifted off his feet by some invisible force and propelled head first into a wall panel.

Sparks exploded from the wall as the officer smashed into an electrical junction, causing the room to lose power and go completely dark. The rumbling was suddenly gone and in turn the pain in Din's head had ceased. He immediately raised his weapon and tried to locate the prisoner but it was a futile gesture in this blackness.

The room was nearly silent now and Din listened closely for any indication of movement around him. He could hear nothing but the normal faint hum of the ship's systems, however. He decided that he would slowly approach the girl's position to make sure she was still restrained so with finger on the trigger of his laser rifle he took a tentative step forward.

He didn't get to make a second step. Emergency lights suddenly flickered on, illuminating the room in an eerie dim light allowing him to see the girl that had been immobilized up to a few seconds ago standing directly in front of him. Somehow she had silently left the restraining chair and grabbed his unconscious partner's weapon. She was so close that he could feel her breath on his face as he gazed into her eyes. The look in her eyes made him feel ill. There was malevolence behind the pupils, a malevolence that was so terrifying he felt like running. He couldn't move, though. He was frozen in place by the fear that gripped him. There was also something else strange about her gaze. Her eyes did not look human. They had red pupils and where the whites should be, they were a sickening yellow. He felt like he was peering into Hell.

Din somehow knew what was going to happen next so he tried to close his eyes. He didn't get the chance before she raised the stock of the weapon with blinding speed and struck him directly in the forehead. As he faded from consciousness he heard the door to the room whoosh open and he wondered what Caine was going to do when he found out about their failure. He decided that it couldn't be nearly as terrifying as what this female demon had already shown him.
