Sitting at her desk, Dearing was spinning Young's flash drive between her fingers and sadly looking at it.
Leaving her nephews at the palace made her think back to her assistant and she kept wondering why she had her flash drive in her hand at the time of her death.

Driven by curiosity, she inserted the drive on her laptop and looked at its content.
She found a few working files, downloaded films or series, and pictures of the last paintball tournament... A fairly banal content, but one of the files caught her attention:

Name: New Folder (2)
Modified: 12/24/2017 4:33 pm
Type: File Folder
Size: 90.11 MB

Linking the date and time of the last modification with that of the pterosaur attack, during which someone had broken into Wu's office, Dearing understood why Young had this flash drive on her.

She opened the file and saw a number of documents, reports, emails, schedules...
She consulted the properties and saw that their author was Henry Wu.
Reading them, she noticed that they all concerned the Indominus.
Her eyes then stopped on a subfolder named GenMap. Realizing that she was in possession of the Indominus' genetic map, Dearing summoned Grady and him alone so they can have a look at it together.

"Where did you get those files?" He asked when he arrived.

That's when he saw Young's flash drive.

"Zara..."

"Yes, she was part of the paintball team remember," she recalled him, "and I would swear that I had already seen her with a bag similar to the one that the officer had found. Pretending to go pick Zach and Gray at the visitors infirmary, she took advantage of the attack's chaos to infiltrate the laboratories."

She sighed.

"Although she has committed an act of treason, I cannot get mad at her and I don't want to. She was always loyal and helpful to me and a good friend. Besides, I know the reasons that pushed her to do that."

"Why?"

"Did you know that she was supposed to get married in a few months?"

"I heard that, yes."

"She wanted her wedding to be perfect but her budget was tight and she was afraid to make sacrifices. I have seen and heard her several times over the past few weeks on the phone with her mother, debating about it," she explained. "She recently told her that she had found a way to fund the ceremony she dreamed of."

Dearing gently took Grady's hand and looked at him in the eyes.

"Owen, not a word to Lowery and Vivian. They had enough..."

He nodded and leaned towards the laptop screen where the cursor was positioned over the GenMap subfolder.

Dearing grabbed the mouse and clicked on it, but a password was requested.

"It would have been too good...," she said.

She typed "Ivan" and pressed "Enter".

An error message was displayed, indicating that the password was incorrect.

"Ah!" She exclaimed.

"Try with John or Simon," he suggested.

She did this but the error message was also displayed.
She even tried with "Norman", but the result was the same.

For a moment, Grady thought they were stuck, then he saw Dearing typing "Descartes", then "René Descartes", and finally "René" before that the password was finally accepted.

"René Descartes?" He questioned.

"There was a copy of the Discourse on the Method on the desk back in the lab," she said, "and Wu has quoted this author several times in the past."

Two folders, one titled Seth and the other Thyestes, and thirteen PDF files, each named with a code that consisted of two uppercase letters for most and a series of four numerals, were displayed inside the window:

BC1758 ; BS1846 ; CS1985 ; EC1781 ; GC1995 ; GL1872 ; KS2009 ; MaCr1896 ; MeCa1758 ; MN1998 ; PB1910 ; SG1844 ; TR1905

They randomly clicked on one of the PDFs and noticed that it was a document about the Giganotosaurus and which detailed the reasons behind the choice of this species in the Indominus' design process and the selection of genes to isolate.
It also especially described the materials and methods used, that is the whole working approach and the specific steps required to ensure that the Indominus has the desired features.
Here and there in the document, lightening it, various figures illustrated the texts.

They looked at the name of the document: GC1995. GC as an abbreviation of Giganotosaurus carolinii and 1995 for the species' year of description.

Aware that the other PDFs had been named in the same manner, they opened the other PDFs of the file except those in the "Seth" and "Thyestes" subfolders and noticed that each of them was about one of the species on the list that was transmitted to them and that they were organized in the same way as the one on the Giganotosaurus.
It was like having the different chapters of a genetic editing handbook before the eyes.

Very curious about what the subfolders contained, Dearing and Grady glanced over those PDFs and opened the "Seth" subfolder first.
It contained five PDF files, named in the same manner as those previously viewed:

AP1911 ; HF1893 ; NeAt2002 ; NjAs2007 ; SO1758

"Unsurprisingly, the list we had was incomplete," Dearing observed.

"NeAt," Grady read, "for Neoraptor athertonii. When we think about InGen's painful experience with this species, it's not that surprising that Wu and Hoskins wanted to hide that fact."

"This would explain her high intelligence..."

She saw Grady become pensive, he did not seem to be entirely convinced.

They opened the PDF and noted that the used DNA came from an individual of the hybrid subspecies whose photo was on the front page.
Grady recognized the latter: It was Andromeda, and learning that she had been used to design the Indominus made him feel some resentment towards Wu.
They read the reasons behind the neoraptor's choice and opened the other PDFs of that subfolder.

The first, AP1911, was about Acomys percivali, an African rodent.

"A mouse?!" Dearing observed, flabbergasted.

"Not any mouse. Two species of Acomys mice, including this one, are the only mammals able of completely regenerating damaged skin tissue."

The second was about Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni, a Central American frog of the Centrolenidae family.
They read that this species was able to reflect near-infrared light and that an individual resting on a leaf could not be distinguished from the latter if it was observed under this type of light, making it undetectable to any type of infrared detection device.
Thus, the Indominus, endowed with the ability of this frog, was theoretically able to hide her thermal signature.

They went to the fourth PDF, devoted to Ashe's spitting Cobra, Naja ashei.
Concerning this species, the insertion of some of its genes into the Indominus' genome had been suggested by InGen security division, a suggestion that Wu had vetoed.
Indeed, Naja ashei is not only the largest species of spitting cobra but also the one that secreted the biggest amount of venom, up to 6.2 mL as measured during a sampling.
Faced with the idea of ending up with a ten-ton predatory dinosaur capable of projecting venom within a theme park environment, Wu had categorically refused, stating that it would be incompatible with a public presentation, not to say unnecessarily dangerous and therefore counterproductive at this stage of the project.
He had clarified however that they might consider adding this capability to future subjects with different primary uses and bred in a more secure and secretive environment.
Thus, the document had the "Scrapped" mention on its front page.

Finally, the species featured on the fifth and last PDF was the Common Cuttlefish or Sepia officinalis.
Grady and Dearing both were aware that cuttlefishes were the masters of camouflage and knew therefore that the Indominus had inherited her camouflage abilities from them.
Although it was specified in the document that the cuttlefish genes had been inserted into the Indominus genome in order for her to benefit of an accelerated growth, Wu hand his team were more than aware of the cuttlefish's camouflage because on the order of InGen Security and especially the board member that oversaw the whole project, they had isolated the genes responsible for this ability to add them as well.
In the event of an unexpected discovery by park staff of the Indominus' camouflage ability, the geneticists had been instructed to use the "unfortunate side effect" excuse and suggest to management that this ability could be used for entertainment purposes.

"The spiny mouse's regenerative abilities, that frog's capacity of reflecting infra-red lights, the Neoraptor's intelligence and problem-solving abilities, the cuttlefish's accelerated growth and camouflage...," Dearing recapitulated. "If Wu had revealed this to us at the beginning, we would have immediately realized that he had made a weapon and I would have ordered the Indominus' slaughter."

"And you didn't mention the fact that she can reproduce through parthenogenesis... Release a single individual in an isolated area, rich in food and shelter and you would end up with not one animal but a pack after a few years. If we were still in the Middle Ages, an Indominus would have been able to devastate an entire kingdom but nowadays, with the current technology, those who will get individuals can't just release them on the frontline against the tanks and the choppers of the enemy army, I'm afraid they wouldn't last long. On the other hand, if they are released in an area far from the frontline and full of civilians, the only result will be slaughters. Their aim would be to spread terror and nothing else."

"To say that the one we have is just an alpha version... I can't imagine what the final version will be able to do and how it will look like."

"Claire... We are literally in possession of a weapon's blueprints," Grady stated in a very serious tone. "Those who had paid Zara knew what they wanted. If we learn that the intel she was supposed to steal is in our hands, they will do everything in their power to get them out of us. We must tell nobody what is on that flash drive and even destroy it."

"You want to cast it in the fires of Mount Sibo? And what about the information contained in those files? They could be used in order to bring Wu to court. InGen would be in shit creek if he loses his accreditations and status, if he doesn't end up behind bars."

"I am aware of this but forget your quarrel with him. What I'm talking about is a matter of life and death. Ours. Reveal the information contained on that flash drive to the press or justice just like that without taking any precaution and you will see henchmen on your doorstep immediately after. And once they will be finished with you, they will come for me."

While keeping her eyes on the screen, Dearing nodded weakly.

"Alright, let's not mention it to anyone for the moment. But once we would have left this island, both of us will have to think about a mean to reveal to the world Wu and InGen Security's actions without exposing ourselves."

They agreed with a shared glance and continued their analysis of the flash drive's content.

Opening the subfolder "Thyestes", they only saw a document named HS1758.

They opened it and when the name of the species appeared, they ended up being dumbstruck.

"Holy shit..." Grady swore.

They remained silent for several seconds, until Dearing said:

"She's part human..."

The scientific name at the top of the document was indeed Homo Sapiens.
This revelation gave many answers about some of the Indominus anatomical peculiarities, like the presence of opposable thumbs, the volume of the cranial box and the developed facial muscles.

"I wonder whose DNA was used..." Grady thought aloud.

"Doesn't matter. Chuck Norris' or Larry Silverstein's given her over the top abilities or the luck she has. No seriously, it wouldn't surprise me that it's his. Some scientists like to sign their creations and given Wu's big head... That's it. No, it can only be his. I will commit seppuku if it's not the case."

"Anyway, Wu fucked up, badly. That's some illegal shit that he did."

Dearing leaned back against the back of her chair and sighed anxiously.

"I authorized her creation and my signature on all the documents concerning her proves it. Wu has very good lawyers, the fault will fall on me."

Grady put a hand on her shoulder and said:

"You are not responsible. He did this behind your back."

"I am aware of this but justice won't have the same opinion as you."

She leaned on the desk and rested her head against her hands.

"With this being added to the disaster's toll, I risk several years of jail..."

They lingered more on this PDF than on the others but didn't learned anything about the donor's identity and they noted that the descriptions of some results were quite evasive and focused mainly on the traces of this taboo inheritance on the general anatomy.

As reading this document did not bring anything more, they left the subfolders about the genomic composition and saw a text document that immediately attracted their attention, as it was a logbook.

When they wanted to open it, they realized that he was protected by a riddle that Dearing read:

"In the memory of two brothers, that death had taken too soon, I stand between the bookstore and the Old Union and am a place of meeting. What is my nickname?"

They began to think about an answer, lengthily.

"Do you have some answer?" She asked him, realizing that her thoughts didn't had any outcome.

"No."

"Me neither, not the faintest idea."

That's when someone knocked on the door. Dearing closed the file and removed the flash drive.

"Yes?"

The door opened, revealing Sembène.

"Lowery has the archive footage we asked him," he announced.

Dearing and Grady left the office and followed him to the meeting room. Inside, Cruthers was waiting for them, and his laptop was open on the table.

The former director and the two keepers took chairs and sat around him to watch the screen where he had gathered a number of archive footage in a playlist.

He played it and as the different videos were displayed one after the other in chronological order, they told the Indominus' youth and brought some answers to their questions.
