Chapter 19 – Dulled

Hallways filled with the dimming hum of fluorescent lights. Sectioned off from the main wing, the ICU held an eerie quiet that didn't sit well with Dr. Miyatsu. There was always something about it that just felt too proper – too sterile.

Approaching the room of his last patient for the night, he noticed one very conscientious colleague already at the doorway. Perfect timing.

"This one's a fighter," he commented upon arrival, shuffling over post-op notes within piled folders.

Not receiving a response – not that he had expected one – the curious doctor stole a glance towards Sesshomaru, somewhat surprised at the intensity in which he was observing the unconscious girl. Following his line of sight, he too, attuned to the slumbering patient.

The steady tones of monitoring machines seemed to be the only indicators of life. Purples and blues had surfaced like splashes of angry watercolour. Thin lines wove between even thinner skin in effort to hold close open wounds. Though the sutures had been spectacular, the lesions would undoubtedly still scar. Her injuries had been challenging. Even he could admit, that though his skills were incomparable to the best trauma surgeons in the vast city, he had been fretful of the resulting outcome.

"Do you know her?" He asked, voice sombre as the grey of the muted room. The board had once again refused his request for a repaint this year, citing it a 'frivolous endeavor lacking return on equity'.

"No," Sesshomaru finally replied before peering down at his own set of notes, "However, I do recognize her from the charity event."

A spark of hope. "Did you catch her name?" Dr. Miyatsu questioned, pacing towards the bed. "We've been trying to figure out who Jane Doe is, she only had her clothes and keys when they brought her in."
