Day 28: Dagger
The black dog bounded through the castle on silent paws, stopping just before he reached the Gryffindor common room and transforming into a man. He took a piece of paper from the pocket of his robes and stepped toward the entrance, which was guarded not by the portrait of a fat lady that was so familiar to him, but by a painting of a knight. Sirius supposed that wasn't very surprising, considering the damage he had done to the painting when he had last entered the castle.
Upon sighting Sirius the painted knight drew a sword, exclaiming loudly, "What foul villain is this, creeping about in the dead of night?"
"Shut it, you," Sirius hissed. He didn't want to know what would happen if he was caught here. Hurriedly he began reading the list of passwords off the paper and the door swung forward to admit him.
He strode purposefully across the empty common room and up the stairs that led to the boys dormitories. He hesitated just long enough to read the signs on the doors as he passed them, stopping in front of the one labeled third years. It would not do to get the wrong room.
As he stole quietly into the room, which was filled with snores, he couldn't help but think of how his godson was lying asleep in one of these beds. But now was not the time for that. He had a mission to complete.
A vicious grin spread slowly across Sirius' face, making him look quite like the madman everyone thought of him as he pulled a large knife from the folds of his robes and stepped toward one of the beds.
Too eager to finally take his revenge to waste time fumbling with the curtains, Sirius instead raised the knife and simply slashed through them. This proved to be a mistake. Sirius froze, knife still raised in his hand as a loud ripping sound pierced the air. The eyes of the boy lying in the bed flew open and for a heartbeat, his eyes and Sirius' eyes locked. Before Sirius could put his hand over the boy's mouth, or better yet, find the rat he had come for, kill it and get out of here, the boy let out a scream that Sirius was certain would rouse the whole castle.
There was no time to look for the rat now. Silently cursing himself for his stupidity and impatience, Sirius raced out of the dormitory. There would be no revenge for him tonight.
