Chapter 7 - The first quidditch match of the season
Days passed and James continued to impress in Transfiguration, Charms and Flying class. Severus and Lily proved to be top of the class in Potions and Remus really impressed in Defence Against the Dark Arts. Peter continued to struggle but he improved every day with his incredible hard work. He had earned twenty points for Gryffindor alone just by showing that hard work really pays off.
"Are you ready for tomorrow?" James asked on Thursday morning when he sat down at the breakfast table.
"What's tomorrow?" Lily asked from three seats down.
"Lily! Are you serious?" Alice asked, "It's the first quidditch match of the season!"
"Way to steal my thunder Alice." James complained.
"Quidditch is the game wizards play on broomsticks, right?" Lily asked.
"Yes and this is a really important game. It sets the course for the rest of the season." James continued, "Gryffindor versus Slytherin might be the most important game ever."
"Okay." Lily said.
"Anyway, do you want to sit next to me in the stands?" James asked Lily.
"Actually, I think I'm going to sit with Severus. We haven't had much time to catch up." Lily answered.
"You're going to sit with Snivellus?" Sirius asked, "Why?"
"First of all, don't call him that and secondly I want to catch up with one of my friends." Lily said.
"Yeah but…" James started to complain.
"Don't start James." Kingsley warned from further up the table where he was reading a book for Astronomy class.
The day passed by in a blur of excitement. In Charms class Peter finally managed to perform a spell on the first try, Remus impressed Professor Johnson in Defence Against the Dark Arts with his impressive knowledge of werewolves, James continued to be top of the class in Transfiguration and Sirius was the only student in class able to plot all the planets in our solar system on the star charts. When Friday, the day of the big game, finally arrived classes ended early so that the students could all go watch the game.
"Are you seriously going to sit with Severus on the Slytherin pavilion? You should be cheering on the house team with us!" Alice complained.
"Severus and I are actually going to go check out the library while no one is there." Lily answered.
"You're going to miss your first ever Quidditch game?" Alice complained again.
"There'll be other games." Lily replied.
"But this is the first game you'll ever see. It's really important." Alice told her.
"Well I suppose the next game will be my first." Lily defended.
"I think you're making a mistake." Alice said.
"Please don't start. You're sounding like James and you know I'm sick and tired of listening to him talking about how bad Slytherin is and that we shouldn't befriend people in that house." Lily told her, "School is about learning and making friends and if we're only friends with people in our house then we only meet a quarter of the people in our school. There's so much we'll miss if we limit ourselves to the Gryffindor common room."
"Lily, no one ever said you're not allowed to have friends in other houses. By all means befriend Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs as much as you like but the Gryffindor-Slytherin rivalry goes back to the beginning. It's just a little strange that you'd befriend a Slytherin, that's all." Alice stated.
"Alice, please." Lily begged.
"Fine." Alice gave in, "But Lily, you're a muggleborn and there are people in Slytherin who might...bully you for it."
"But Severus will never do that." Lily argued, "Anyway, you should probably get to the game. Bye."
They parted ways and Lily headed to the library. She met up with Severus outside and they went inside where they spent the afternoon looking at higher level potions books.
On the Quidditch pitch the game took off in a blast. Less than a minute in a Slytherin chaser had already scored a goal. The next goal was scored by Gryffindor and then another score by Gryffindor. The Gryffindors burst into cheers but it died away quickly because Slytherin was once again in possession of the quaffle. The Slytherin chaser flew across the field and just as he was about to score the Gryffindor keeper flew in and caught the quaffle. Another loud cheer erupted from the Gryffindors. A Gryffindor chaser picked up the quaffle and headed to the other side of the field. Halfway there a bludger hit the chaser from behind and she was knocked off her broom. The Slytherin supporters cheered while the Gryffindors booed. The Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs were too worried about the girl now lying on the ground to choose a side. But the girl got up, mounted her broom and flew back into the game. By that time Slytherin had already intercepted the quaffle and was strong on their way to the goalpost when the ball was taken by a different Gryffindor chaser. He soared through the air back to the goalposts. The Slytherin keeper blocked the shot and six wizards on brooms zoomed to the other end of the field. Slytherin scored and the quaffle was thrown back into the air. A Gryffindor catcher caught it and started heading towards the goal, Slytherin intercepted and Gryffindor stole the quaffle back. The quaffle was passed along until finally Gryffindor scored again. Then a loud cheer erupted from the Slytherin side. While Gryffindor was focusing on their chaser, Slytherin's seeker managed to catch the golden snitch which is worth 150 points. Slytherin had won the first game of the year.
When Lily returned to the common room that night, the atmosphere was glum. Nobody was talking, everybody just sat around and stared at the fire as though someone they all loved had died.
"What happened?" she asked Alice.
"They won." Alice spat with disgust.
"Oh, well, there'll be other games won't there?" Lily asked. Alice just stared into the fire and Lily headed up for bed.
