LATER THAT EVENING…
After the Mahogany Town Contest had ended, many of the Pokémon coordinators went over to the Mahogany Town Pokémon Center to heal their Pokémon after a long day and to celebrate the end of the contest with a large potluck.
Many of the coordinators brought large amounts of food to the Pokémon Center to share with everyone else, something that May's Munchlax greatly enjoyed. He was picking food from just about every table.
The coordinators all mingled with each other. Among them, the three contest winners were the center of attention: Drew, May, and the winner of the Cute Contest! Drew, of course, was swarmed by his fan club. However, May was also surrounded by many coordinators. As she was the first one to break Valerie's undefeated streak, many of them asked her questions about her training and the battle itself. Some even asked for her autograph!
"Wow, May! You and Glaceon were amazing today!"
"It was about time somebody knocked Valerie off her high horse!"
"That part when her Flareon was sliding around on the ice…that was hilarious!"
May blushed at receiving so many compliments. "Thank you everyone!" she said, bashfully. "It was a really hard battle. There were times when I thought we weren't going to be able to pull it off. But I'm proud of Glaceon and I'm glad that she was able to win!"
"Where is Glaceon anyway?" asked a coordinator. "I want to see the winning Pokémon in person!"
"She's resting in the emergency room," said May.
"That doesn't surprise me," said another coordinator. "Taking four Giga Impacts in a row…I can't imagine a Pokémon that would be okay after that."
"I agree," said a female coordinator. "That was really brutal…even for Valerie to do."
"The good news is that Nurse Joy is used to taking care of her by now," reassured May. "She says Glaceon should be fully recovered in the morning."
Amongst the coordinator's Pokémon, they all circled around Wartortle, who was jumping around, flailing his hands and telling everybody about Glaceon's battle with Flareon.
"So there she was," he began. "Out in the middle of the field, face-to-face with a ferocious Flareon. Her glare was as sharp as Vespiquen's claws and her paws dug into the dirt, ready for a fight! She wasn't going to let herself be intimidated by her fiery brethren! And so the battle begins! First, it starts to Hail! Then, the sun gets too hot! Hail! Sun! Hail! Sun! The weather kept changing back-and-forth, back-and-forth! Both Pokémon fought for weather supremacy!"
May's other Pokémon, who were nearby, laughed as Wartortle continued telling the story. All of the Pokémon laughed when Wartortle imitated Flareon sliding on the ice, falling over in the process. "Does he have to be so dramatic?" Vespiquen asked, annoyed.
"You are criticizing someone for being dramatic?" asked Quilava. "I think it's nice he's bragging about somebody else for a change."
"Ugh, whatever," replied Vespiquen. "I think I'll join Munchlax and partake in the thievery of all the human food."
Vespiquen then hovered away from the group.

In the emergency room, Glaceon was resting peacefully on a bed. Nurse Joy was keeping a close watch on her. "May sure is keeping me busy with you," she said. "I mean, really, how many times has it been?"
Nurse Joy examined Glaceon carefully. "At least your burns are healing up," she muttered. "You still have a few bruises, especially around your head. I'm going to be sure that May takes it easy with you from now on."
Nurse Joy then left to take care of some Pokémon in another room, leaving Glaceon sleeping all alone.
But then, the door opened and Wartortle walked right in. He hopped up onto the counter and onto Glaceon's gurney. Glaceon felt him walking on her bed and slowly turned towards him. "Hi, Wartortle," she said, weakly.
"How are you feeling?" Wartortle asked.
"I still feel pretty beat up," said Glaceon.
"I'm not surprised. That was quite a battle you had with Flareon."
Wartortle then placed a few bits of fruit in front of Glaceon. "I got you some stuff to eat," he said. "Munchlax is pretty much devouring the whole place of food, so I had to move fast."
"Thanks Wartortle," said Glaceon. "Thank you...for everything you did for me this week."
"Well, I mean…we all helped out," he replied, bashfully.
"You know, I've been wondering…you were making fun of me at first and then suddenly you wanted to help me. I never understood the sudden change of heart."
Wartortle then remembered the nightmare he had about Glaceon jumping off a roof. "Uhhh…yeah…I was a total jerk to you that day," he said. "I felt bad about that. But hey, the important thing is you've finally became "more powerful" like you hoped you would when you evolved."
"I guess," replied Glaceon. "But I don't think even Quilava went through this much trouble when she evolved."
Just then, the door cracked open again. "Hey! What are you doing here?!" shouted a voice.
Glaceon and Wartortle jumped. They turned and saw Vespiquen hovering over to them. "Vespiquen?" asked Wartortle. "What are you doing here?"
"Excuse me, I asked you first!" snapped Vespiquen.
"I just wanted to check up on Glaceon," answered Wartortle. "There's nothing wrong with that, is there?"
"By yourself?" Vespiquen asked suspiciously.
"Okay then, why are you here?" Wartortle asked.
"As a matter of fact, I am here to congratulate her."
"You are?" asked Wartortle and Glaceon.
Vespiquen flew closer to Glaceon. She then offered her claw. "Congratulations on your hard-fought victory," she said. "You put on quite a performance in all of your battles. I'm especially impressed that you managed to stand at all after that ferocious Overheat."
"It's true," said Wartortle. "Y'know, she was the very first one to start cheering your name after you got back on one paw. She became your ultimate fangirl!"
"I did not!" snapped Vespiquen. "And the rest of you just gave up on Glaceon!"
"I didn't!" replied Wartortle.
"Oh, never mind that! Just…shake my claw and let's get this over with!"
Glaceon smiled as she shook Vespiquen's claw. "Thank you Vespiquen," she said, happily.
Vespiquen laughed."But of course," she said. "Had I been chosen to represent May in the Pokémon Contest, I would have defeated each of your opponents with ease."
"Oh, here we go," groaned Wartortle.
"No, I think she has a point," replied Glaceon.
"I do?" asked Vespiquen.
"She does?" asked Wartortle.
"I think Vespiquen could have won the contest," said Wartortle. "Especially with Toxic."
"Oh…really?" Vespiquen asked, curiously.
"When I used Hail in the contest, it didn't really weaken or slow down my opponents that much, just Maddie's Butterfree," explained Glaceon. "But I'm sure Toxic could easily slow them down. I bet even Flareon would fall if she were poisoned."
"Y-you really think so?" asked Vespiquen.
"Okay, okay," interrupted Wartortle. "You don't need to flatter her that much."
Wartortle then started walking towards the door. "We better let you rest for the night," he said. "Plus, I'm sure the others are going to ask where we are. So we better get back."
"Um...yes! Indeed we should," agreed Vespiquen.
"See you tomorrow, Glaceon!" said Wartortle. "Congrats on winning!"
"Uh, yes! Congratulations all around," repeated Vespiquen. "And…thank you."
Vespiquen made sure to whisper the last part just loud enough for only Glaceon to hear.

While the other coordinators were talking, May looked all around the room. "Hey, has anyone seen Valerie?" she asked.
The coordinators all responded. "Nope."
"No."
"I haven't."
"Not since the contest."
A female coordinator spoke up. "I don't care to see her anyway," she said. "I'm glad she lost for once. Maybe she'll get depressed and give up contests all together."
"Now, hold on! I don't think she should do that," replied May.
"Oh please, after the way she bullied my little sister out of Pokémon Contests for good, it's the least she can do."
"Wait…what?" asked May.
"Yeah!" agreed another coordinator. "Or how about when she made a coordinator forfeit by telling her she was too fat to be in a beauty contest?"
"Whoa!" May said, horrified.
"She's nothing but a manipulating bully," complained a coordinator. "Now that she doesn't have her undefeated streak anymore, hopefully she'll just disappear out of the spotlight."
"You're telling me. I remember when she kicked my Pokémon while we were trying to train for the contest," added another coordinator. "My Buizel is still afraid to compete."
"She did that to you too?!" gasped May.
The other coordinators turned to her. "Wait…do you mean…she also…" said a coordinator.
"What did she do to you?" asked another.
"I…I…well…a lot of things," said May. "I never realized that she was awful to everybody else too."
"Oh, trust me. You don't even know half the horrible stuff she gets away with."
Suddenly, a member of Drew's fan club screamed. "Hey look, Drew is on T.V.!"
0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0
On the television was Roxanna from Johto Today. In the corner of the screen were highlights of the contest battles, including Drew's battle.
"Exciting! Intense! Unpredictable!" exclaimed Roxanna. "Hello everyone, and welcome back to Johto Today! Those were just some of the words that best described the action-packed battles that took place today at the Mahogany Town Contest Hall! All three categories featured some amazing displays of strength and showmanship as the Pokémon gave it their all! One such Pokémon was Bayleef, belonging to Drew from LaRousse City. We interviewed him a few days ago during the contest and we managed to get a word with him after he had won the Cool Contest Ribbon."
"This contest was a piece of cake," Drew said. "Bayleef and I had been training nonstop and it all paid off in the end, like I knew it would."
May rolled her eyes at hearing Drew's comments. The Johto Today report continued by showing clips of May's battle with Valerie.
"Probably the biggest upset of the contest happened in the final battle between May from Petalburg City and Valerie from Goldenrod City," said Roxanna. "It was truly an amazing performance from both coordinators, with Valerie at her most aggressive yet. However, in an unprecedented event, May and her Glaceon managed to win and end Valerie's undefeated streak."
Many of the coordinators cheered and hollered for May.
"We also managed to get a word with her once she received her Beauty Contest Ribbon," said Roxanna. "We asked how she felt about breaking Valerie's undefeated streak. This is what she had to say."
"It feels pretty good to be the first one!" May said, happily. "Although, Valerie certainly didn't make it easy on me. It was probably the most intense contest battle I've ever been in, and that's including the Grand Festivals in the other regions."
"It truly was intense, wasn't it?" asked Roxanna. "It seemed like this was more than just a Pokémon contest battle for you two. Was this something more…personal for you?"
For a moment, May hesitated to answer. "Uh…well, all I will say is she's a…she's a…"
May struggled for a bit on what to say about Valerie. "Well…she is…a very talented coordinator. She wouldn't have had winning streak if she wasn't. She not only defeated me once, but she even defeated Solidad, who is a Ribbon Cup winner. And losing her undefeated streak doesn't take any of that away from her. So…I don't know how she feels about me after our battle, but…I look forward to the next time we battle each other!"
"Unfortunately, we could not reach Valerie for her comments," added Roxanna.
The other coordinators looked at her, as did her family. "May, if you ask me, I think you were being way too nice to her," said Max.
The other coordinators were quick to agree.

MEANWHILE…
"And that concludes our coverage of the Mahogany Town Contest!" said Roxanna. "We'll continue to bring you coverage of all the major Johto contests live and in-person! 'til next time, ladies and gentl-!"
Valerie was quick to turn the T.V. after watching the interview at her vacation home nearby Mahogany Town. She sat on the sofa with her knees curled up against her chest. She was dressed in her nightgown and her hair was still damp. She had just finished taking a long bath. She hoped to have washed away the essence of failure off her body, as she eloquently told Harold.
Her Pokémon were on the other end of the sofa, sitting as far away from her at they could. Not helping matters was that Valerie had dark bags under her eyes, which made her look absolutely miserable.
Her servant, Harold, was close by, cleaning the kitchen counter. "Well, Miss May sure was polite, all things considered," said Harold.
"Shut up," Valerie said, coldly.
Ignoring Valerie's request, Harold continued on. "You know, Miss May did make a good point," he said.
"I said shut up," ordered Valerie.
"No, I will not," said Harold, politely. "I think you need to hear what I have to say."
"I…don't need to anything!" shouted Valerie, scaring her Pokémon a bit.
Valerie got up from her seat and stormed away towards her bedroom. Her Pokémon jumped when she slammed the door behind her, shaking the whole house. Her Pokémon looked at each other. "Remember when Pokémon Contests were fun?" Jolteon asked, nervously.
Harold could see that her Pokémon were frightened by her actions. Determined, he walked up to her bedroom door and knocked. "Go away!" growled Valerie.
"No I will not!" he said, defiantly. "You need to hear what I have to say."
Harold waited, but Valerie didn't reply nor did she open the door. "I see. Very well," he said, nodding his head. Nevertheless, he pressed on. "Now Miss Valerie, I don't blame you for feeling the way you do. I can't say I would not be feeling the same way you're feeling now if it were I in your position," he began. "However, I cannot bite my tongue any further, lest I lose it entirely. It is one thing to mistreat other coordinators and their Pokémon, but I was greatly offended with how you have been treating your own Pokémon this past week!"
Harold recalled when Valerie had used Vaporeon as a guinea pig for Flareon's Overheat, not caring that she was severely burned after the battle. "First, you showed no attention to Vaporeon or Jolteon after their practice battle with Flareon! Then, you go and leave Flareon behind on the battlefield, not once thinking to try and defrost her! That is no way to treat your Pokémon! Especially ones given to you by your mother and father out of the kindness of their hearts!"
"Yeah!" said Vaporeon.
"That's right!" agreed Jolteon.
"Stick it to her, old man!" cheered Flareon.
Harold waited for some kind of response from Valerie. But again, he got nothing. He continued on. "Now, as I was saying before, Miss May made a good point in her interview. You may have lost your undefeated streak, but it was not for the lack of trying. One loss does not take away your abilities as a coordinator nor does it take away all the times you won your previous contests through sheer skill and determination. However, I insist that you evaluate yourself, your training methods, your contest techniques, and perhaps the way you treat others as well. If nothing else, you must take better care of your Pokémon!"
Harold stood silent for a moment as he adjusted his glasses. "Flareon fought valiantly for you today! But if you continue mistreating her and the others, they may not bother fighting for you at all."
Harold then stepped away from her bedroom door and walked back to the kitchen to finish cleaning. Valerie's Pokémon looked at each other. "That was pretty good," said Flareon.
"I didn't think of doing that," Vaporeon said.
Inside Valerie's bedroom, Valerie was lying down in her bed, with a pillow fiercely pressed against her face. She pushed her pillow down tighter on her face before angrily throwing it across her bedroom. She thrashed and kicked in her bed repeatedly as the memory of her losing her battle against May refused to go away. "I hate her!" she screamed internally. "Thanks to her, I'm going to lose everything! My fame! My fans! My respect!"
Valerie got up her bed and grabbed one of her other pillows from off her bed. She began throwing it and slamming it repeatedly down to the floor angrily.
Suddenly, she heard the phone ringing from the kitchen. Harold was quick to answer.
"Hello? Oh, Mrs. White, so good of you to call! How are things? Mm-hmm…ah, very good! And how is Master Albert? Oh, I'm glad to hear he's doing well!"
Upon realizing that Harold was talking to her mother, Valerie stopped what she was doing. She quietly inched closer to her bedroom door and listened carefully to the call. While he could clearly hear Harold's side of the conversation, her mother's voice was too muffled for her to make out.
"What's that? You wish to speak to Miss Valerie? Uh, oh dear, I'm afraid she went to bed early tonight. She was rather upset after her battle. Oh, you both saw it?"
Valerie gulped when she heard that her parents had watched her contest battle. "Oh, Miss White, please don't think too harshly of her! I believe her emotions are entirely justified. Ah, would you like me to wake her and let her know you…? Oh! Very well then. Is there anything you would like for me to pass on to her? …Excellent! I'll be sure to tell her that first thing in the morning. Yes, good night to you and Master Albert."
Valerie then heard Harold hang up the phone. She was caught by surprise when a light peeked through the bottom of her bedroom door. She heard footsteps approaching and suddenly stop. Valerie quietly kneeled down and peeked through the crack underneath the door. She could make out the bottom of her servant's feet.
She expected Harold to knock on her door, but he didn't. She waited for him to do something, but he then saw his feet turn away. "Maybe it would be best to wait until tomorrow morning," he whispered to himself.
Just then, Valerie saw four sets of paws walk up to Harold. Valerie knew that they belonged to her Pokémon, but she couldn't make out their faces. "Ah, don't worry!" Harold said to them, kindly. "I'm sure she'll listen to what I said earlier. She'll be fine by tomorrow…I hope."
Harold then made his way to his private room. "I suppose it would be best if you all slept in my room for tonight," he offered. "Come along now."
Valerie watched as her Pokémon's paws followed Harold up to his room and disappeared from her sight. She could see one of her Pokémon looking at the door, but Valerie couldn't see their facial expression. The Pokémon then quickly ran to catch up with the others.
Once the hallway light went out, Valerie got back on her feet and slumped over to her bed. She threw the covers over her head and went to sleep with a heavy mind and pain in her gut.

NEXT MORNING…
With the Mahogany Town Contest now concluded, many of the coordinators have packed up their belongings and set out towards their next destination, much to the relief of Nurse Joy.
Before May left for the next part of her journey, she and her family met outside the Pokémon Center.
"Well, I guess this is when we say good-bye again," said Caroline, sadly.
"I have to admit, I missed seeing you perform live!" Max said, excitedly.
"Thank you guys for coming all this way to see me perform!" May said, happily. "I really appreciate it!"
"Of course, sweetie," Norman said, proudly. "With how exciting that last contest battle was, it turned out to be worth the trip!"
Just then, the doors of the Pokémon Center opened up. Nurse Joy walked up to May with a single Poké Ball in her hands. "Here you are, May!" she said, happily. "Glaceon is now fully healed."
"Thank you," May said. "And thank you for taking care of her all this week! As well as my other Pokémon."
"Just make sure you take it easy with her from now on," warned Nurse Joy. "I don't think she'll be able to handle any more abuse."
"Don't worry. I think Glaceon and I will take it easy from now on."
Just then, everyone heard the loud blaring of a car horn. May saw a vehicle driving quickly and erratically down the road. "What is that?" she asked, worriedly.
"I think that's our ride," replied Max.
Everyone jumped back when an old, worn-out jeep suddenly pulled up and stopped right in from of them. The driver turned out to be Professor Birch. "Hello everyone!" he said, cheerfully.
"Hey, Professor Birch!" May said, happily.
"May! I heard about you winning the contest!" Prof. Birch said, as he jumped out of the driver's seat. "Congratulations! It's a shame I wasn't there to see it live!"
"It's alright," replied May. "I know you had more important things to tend to."
"Indeed I did," said Prof. Birch. "And it looks like I'll have to stay a little bit longer."
"Really?" asked Max. "How come?"
"It appears that whatever happened in the Ice Path caused a great disturbance with the Pokémon. Prof. Elm and Gym Leader Pryce requested that I stay to investigate the situation further."
"Oh dear," worried Norman.
"Ah, not to worry!" Professor Birch said, cheerfully. "I've been wanting to do some Pokémon research in Hoenn. Plus, Prof. Elm and I should be able to handle this situation no problem!"
"But what about your work back in Hoenn?" asked May.
"I'm sure the lab assistants can handle it just fine," replied Birch.
Prof. Birch then opened the door for May's family. "Now then, we better get a move on!" he said. "Wouldn't want you guys to miss your flight!"
"With the way you drive, we'll probably be there before the plane even arrives," joked Norman.
May's family threw their bags in the back of the jeep. May then reached out and hugged each one of her family members. "Good-bye, May!" cried Caroline.
"Take care of yourself, sis!" replied Max.
"I'm really happy for you," Norman said, happily. "Keep making me proud, honey!"
"I will! I love you guys," replied May.
May's family then sat down inside of Prof. Birch's jeep. They buckled their seatbelts as Professor Birch adjusted his rearview mirror. "Hang on tight, everyone!" he said. "It might get a little bumpy."
"Just take it really slo-"
Max was cut off when Professor Birch's jeep suddenly took off forward. Everyone held onto something as the jeep rocketed down the road. May continued waving to her family as they drove the street and rounded the corner, disappearing from sight. "Bye, everyone!" May shouted. "Please don't kill my family, Professor Birch"
She then heard a loud yawn coming from behind. She turned around and saw Drew walking towards her. "About time you woke up!" scolded May.
"Hey, is that any way to talk to a Cool Contest winner?" Drew asked, playfully. "I think I deserve to sleep in a little bit."
"Whatever."
Drew looked around and noticed that it was only him and May. "Are we the only coordinators still here?"
"I think so," replied May. "I'm sure most of the coordinators left early in the morning."
"Well then, we better get a move on," said Drew.
"We? You're the one who slept in!" scolded May.
"Oh hey, you guys are still here!"
May was suddenly interrupted by a voice. May and Drew turned around and saw Maddie walking up to them, bag in hand. "Maddie?" May asked, confused. "You haven't left yet?"
"Nope! I was gonna, but I might have slept through my alarm this morning," Maddie laughed. "But hey, I guess it all worked out! Now we can all go to Ecruteak City together!"
"Together?" asked May, confused.
"Yes! I-I mean…if that's okay with you guys?" Maddie asked, nervously. "It'd be nice to have some traveling companions. Maybe even someone who can help me become a better coordinator…"
May and Drew looked at each other, somewhat hesitant on having Maddie join them. "I don't know," worried Drew.
"If it sweetens the deal," continued Maddie. "I can cook meals for you guys!"
"You can cook?!" May asked, happily.
"I sure can!" replied Maddie.
Maddie reached into her bag and took out some small lunch boxes. "Here, I made some breakfast for the road!" she said, happily. "I was going to save them for myself, but I don't mind sharing with you guys!"
May and Drew took the boxes from Maddie and removed the top. Inside was a curry dish with a piece of buttered toast on top. May and Drew had never seen such a dish before. "Ooh," fancy," May said, impressed by the presentation.
"Go ahead, try it!" offered Maddie.
"Well, I am pretty hungry," said Drew.
May and Drew grabbed the spoons that were inside and scooped some of the food into their mouths. To Maddie's relief, Drew found himself smiling. "Hey! This stuff is pretty good!" he said, happily.
"It is?" Maddie asked. "Oh, I'm glad to hear that! What about you, May?"
Maddie turned towards May, who had a wide look on her face. She stood there, spoon in her mouth, staring off into the distance. "Uh…May?" Maddie asked.
"You okay there, May?" Drew asked, concerned.
Suddenly, May scarfed down the whole dish. Maddie was caught off-guard when May suddenly grabbed her hands and looked at her with tears in her eyes. "This is the greatest thing I have ever tasted!" she cried happily. "You and I are going to be the best of friends! I will teach you everything I know and make you the greatest coordinator ever!"
"You will?!" Maddie asked, excitedly.
May then brought Maddie in closer to her and hugged her tightly. "You are a gift from above!" she cried, happily.
"Oh brother," groaned Drew, as he finished off his breakfast.
Once May and Drew had finished their breakfast, the trio of Coordinators set out on Route 42 towards Ecruteak City, the sight of May's next gym battle. "So, how long do you think it'll be until we reach Ecruteak City?" asked May.
"Hopefully it'll only take us a couple of days," replied Maddie.
"I hope so," May said. "With how much stuff has happened since we got to Mahogany Town, I feel like we've been here for years."
Maddie then remembered something. "Did you guys hear about all the new contests that just opened up in some of the smaller towns in Johto?" asked Maddie. "I think there's a town nearby that has a few open spots for the Beauty Contest."
"Really?" May asked, excitedly. "Well then, let's go!"
"I also heard about this thing called…the Pokéalthon?" Drew asked, unsure if he was saying the name right. "From what I heard, it's some big sports competition between Pokémon. It sounds like my kind of game."
"Well, whether it's a gym battle, a contest, or a big sports competition, after defeating Valerie, I'm sure my Pokémon can take on anything!" May said, proudly.

A/N: And now, at long last, the Mahogony Town Contest has concluded! Again, I didn't plan on this arc to be so long, but it did. I want to thank everyone for being so patient with me and I hoped you all enjoyed the final battle between May and Valerie!
I promise that the chapters will move at a much quicker pace from this point on.
NEXT TIME: With a new traveling companion joining them, our coordinator heroes continue on their journey. Between May's next gym battle, the Pokéalthon, and the various contests opening up around Johto, there's a wealth of new challenges for our trip of coordinators!
That's assuming that they don't run into any more trouble, like Team Rocket or Team Galactic. Or Jahan's Tyranitar still rampaging and on the loose!
Who knows what will happen to them next time?
Find out next time in the next, sanitized story of "Pokémon: Contest Chronicles!"
