It's been forever, but we're finally back to the Pokémon journey. This will now mark the beginning the Fuchsia City Arc. Ash's gym match will take place in the next chapter with Serena's contest to follow, and then comes the Safari Zone. This will be an entirely fun arc, until the very end I should say. But let's wait on that.
Now you might be wondering why I've kept the title of this chapter a secret, it's because it was going to hint something that was going to happen in this chapter. You've waited a while for this, and now you shall be rewarded.
Two more things I want to bring up. First off, I'm changing the title of this fanfiction. I'm getting rid of the Pokemon in the title and it will now be called "The Adventures of Ash and Serena: Kanto Arc." Second, I'm now going to put up a character progress report for Ash and Serena on my profile page. It will feature the Pokemon they caught, progress they have made (badges and ribbons) and that will even include their rankings in major tournaments, and finally items that they're carrying.
Look on my profile page for that. Now before we begin the chapter, another visit to Annie's past, I haven't forgotten about her.
Enjoy the chapter, and I do not own Pokémon!
Flashback-18 years ago
A girl was walking along the river as she was traveling with a brown dog creature with a blue fur on his back and light brown facial like hair on his face. That girl was Annie Presley and her Lillipup who was now a Herdier.
Annie has felt nothing but relief for the last two years after running away from her so called family. She has been on a Pokémon journey alone for those two years with no contact with anyone. She got herself out of Kanto and ran off to Unova where she took on the Unova League. During that time Annie caught some Unova native Pokémon, and her Lillipup evolved into a Herdier. Annie didn't make it far in the league as she was out in the preliminaries.
Now she has taken a plane to Kalos where she hoped to turn things around. The landscape in Kalos appeared to be beautiful as there were many Pokémon living in harmony. A new taste of air was just what Annie needed to try and get herself back on track. Annie was now tempted to take on the Kalos League.
"Nice weather today, don't you think Herdier?" Annie asked her companion.
"Woof," Herdier replied meaning yes.
Despite being away from home, Annie did feel lonely. Though Herdier does go in a Pokeball, she keeps him out most of the time just as a way to have some company. She would've been doing this with Delia, but no her parents decided to have another baby and make Delia hold back again and try making her hold back as well. It was all in the past though, they weren't her family anymore. She was on her own, so she can make her own decisions.
Still, it didn't fill the void her in heart that she was alone. Annie did wish she could have another human companion come with her and take the role of her sister. Sure, she had Herdier, but it just wasn't the same.
"You feeling lonely Herdier?" Annie asked.
"Woof," Herdier replied in a moaning way.
"Me too," Annie sighed.
2 hours later
Annie was now on the hillside and she and Herdier spotted a ranch. Maybe a nice look at some farm Pokémon would help get her mind off of her loneliness. As Annie look out on the ranch, she could see plenty of Pokémon ranging from Skiddo, Mareep, Tauros, and Ponyta. However, the area was filled with plenty of Rhyhorn.
As they watched the Pokémon roam around the ranch, Herdier began to jump up at the fence. The Loyal Dog Pokémon was happily panting at the Pokémon running around and he was wagging his tail too.
"You wanted to play with those Pokémon?" Annie asked.
"Woof woof!" Herdier barked.
"That's sweet of fun, but we don't know who this farm belongs too. It might be a private farm," Annie told Herdier.
Herdier didn't listen as he backed away and jumped over the fence. Annie gasped when she saw Herdier hop in with the flock of Pokémon.
"Herdier!" Annie called out.
Annie wasn't sure what could happen to Herdier when he was in there. Could he be trampled by those Pokémon? Could they gang up on him and attack? Annie wasn't sure how they were going to act so she got out his Pokeball to call him back. The beam however wasn't close enough so Herdier wasn't being called back. Now there was only one thing she can do.
Annie climbed over the fence and ran after her Herdier. Herdier was happily barking at all of the Pokémon wanting to play. Some of the Pokémon glared at him while others looked bewildered. Just what was this Pokémon doing here and where did he come from?
"Herdier come here!" Annie called out as she was running towards Herdier.
Herdier became nervous and was too nervous too move. Maybe the looks all of those Pokémon were giving him were making him uncomfortable. Annie came in and joined Herdier. She could see how intimidating some of these Pokémon were.
"Hi, I'm so sorry everyone. Herdier just was excited to play," Annie told the Pokémon.
Annie was looking rather nervous with the way the Pokémon were looking at her.
"Get away from them all of you!" a voice called out.
A Rhyhorn was charging at the group of Pokémon which caused the Pokémon to scatter and run away. The bigger detail though was the girl who was a similar age as Annie on the Rhyhorn. She was riding that Pokémon like she was a professional.
After all of the Pokémon ran off, the girl approached Annie and Herdier. Annie looked at the girl as she hopped off the Rhyhorn and could see that she was wearing a blue jumpsuit with a blue saddle helmet. She took off her helmet and it was revealed she had short raven hair.
"Thanks for helping us," Annie said.
"Not a problem, but you shouldn't be here. This here is a ranch for the Pokémon, and you were trespassing. If I hadn't shown up, who knows what those Pokémon could've done to you. They were trained to go after trespassers," the girl on the Rhyhorn explained.
Annie couldn't argue if those Pokémon did try to kill her. They were just doing their job.
"It wasn't my fault, Herdier jumped over the fence and wanted to play with the Pokémon, and I was just coming in to get her out of here," Annie explained.
The girl had a curious look on her face. She took a look at her Herdier as he was happily wagging his tail and barking.
"I see, you were just looking out after your Pokémon," the girl said as she was looking at Herdier, "Aren't you just the cutest thing I've ever seen."
"Woof!" Herdier responded.
"Yeah, I had him since he was just a little Lillipup. He's really a playful looking Pokémon," Annie commented.
"Well you raised him quite well. His fur is all clean, he's full of energy, and most importantly he's happy," the girl said as he knelt down looking at Herdier and then looked at Annie, "Are you a Pokémon breeder by any chance?"
"Oh no," Annie answered, "It's what I learned about taking care of Pokémon back at home."
Annie didn't want to mention anything about her family, but in all due respect, she had gained some of her mother's breeding techniques. She never considered herself to become a breeder. Annie didn't want to think about that, so she needed to change the subject.
"So, all of those Pokémon are yours?" Annie asked.
"Oh no, those are the ranch's Pokémon," the girl answered as she looked at Rhyhorn, "Except for Rhyhorn, she's mine."
The girl gestured at Rhyhorn and gave a friendly growl to Annie and Herdier. At least this Rhyhorn felt much more tamed than the other Pokémon.
"I saw how you were riding on that Rhyhorn, it was pretty cool," Annie stuttered.
"Thanks, I'm getting some early training in," the girl stated.
"Early training?" Annie questioned.
"Yeah, when I get older I plan to become a professional Rhyhorn Racer," the girl said, "Me and Rhyhorn will go all around the world and race our hearts out."
Annie felt a slight bit of jealously when she heard her dream. Annie's dream was to travel the world with her older sister, but that was just a dream that never came true. This girl's dream was still capable of becoming a reality.
"Wow, that's great," Annie nervously said, "I dream of being a great Pokémon trainer."
"A Pokémon trainer?" the girl questioned.
"Yeah, you see I competed in the Unova League last year and did horribly. Now I came here to Kalos to rebuild myself," Annie explained.
"Well good for you. Falling off the saddle and trying to get back up. Shows how tough you are," the girl stated with her hands on her hips, "By the way, I never got to introduce myself my name is Jade."
"I'm Annie," Annie said introducing herself.
"Say Annie, how would you like to come over to my place. I'm sure my mom could cook you up something. She loves when guests come over," Jade recommended.
Annie couldn't help but smile at this girl. Jade was going to offer her a home cooked meal from her mother. She hasn't had any home cooking since running away, so this would be a nice gesture that she can accept.
"Sure, I love too," Annie chirped.
"Great, come on," Jade said as she was about to get on Rhyhorn.
Jade actually stopped after about two seconds. Jade never actually had many friends except for the Pokémon on the ranch. This was one of few times she interacted with someone on her own. Maybe this could be a chance to make a good friend.
"Hey Annie, would you like to hop on Rhyhorn?" Jade asked.
Annie was a little startled when Jade said that. That Rhyhorn did look a little intimidating.
"Don't worry, she won't bite. She's a well tamed Rhyhorn," Jade assured.
"Well sure," Annie replied.
Annie walked away from Herdier and jumped on Rhyhorn. There was a saddle on her, so she didn't have to sit on his spiky back. Annie felt pretty comfortable on the saddle. Sure, it was dirty, but it was comfortable.
"Which way is your house?" Annie asked.
"That way," Jade answered pointing to her house out in the distance.
"You live on the ranch?" Annie questioned in shock.
"No, my family owns the ranch," Jade stated.
Annie was pretty surprised to hear that. So, Jade's family owns the ranch. She might have some questions to ask when she gets to her house about how her family was able to manage a ranch.
Annie grabbed the saddle and Rhyhorn turned to face Jade's house. She knew where Jade's house was, she just wanted to give Annie the experience of riding a Rhyhorn.
With that, Annie grabbed onto to the saddle and Rhyhorn began making a run for the house with Jade and Herdier following her. Annie was feeling pretty frightened when riding Rhyhorn on the count of how fast she was going, but Annie kept her composure and remained calm.
Despite riding this Rhyhorn, Annie felt like she was going to make a good friend in Jade. Maybe even take the place of Delia as the big sister.
End Flashback
Fuchsia City
It was two days after Claude, Sherri, and Lance left as the group finally made it to Fuchsia City. Ash, Serena, Sycamore, and Sophie received a ride from Pedansky as it was the least he could do after all that took place with Siegfried.
They spent those previous two days at the Pokémon Center getting their Pokémon looked up regularly, especially Greninja, Delphox, and the newest member of their Pokémon family, Munchlax. They called their parents to explain the events of what happened and how they got caught in the crossfire with Siegfried. Ash and Serena were smart enough to not tell them about their temporary deaths, and they didn't tell them about the GS Ball either as they were not supposed to tell anyone about that.
Delia never felt so scared, as it almost felt like a repeat of Celadon City. Grace and Jade were trembling in fear, but they were thankful their daughter was alright. Serena didn't tell her moms about what she did in Lavender Town and how it started a fight between her and Ash, and she wasn't sure if she should tell them. They were going to leave the day after Lance and the older couple left but stayed an extra day for precautionary reasons and to do a little training for their upcoming competitions.
Luckily for Serena, she would still have time to enter the contest, and Pedansky giving them a ride brought them a lot of time. Serena's next contest was slated to take place in three days. The contest committee almost considered delaying the contest due to the Siegfried crisis, but thanks to their Pokémon and the other Pokémon in the area along with Claude, Sherri, Pedansky, Sycamore, and Sophie, that wouldn't be the case and the contest would go on as scheduled.
The group bid farewell to Pedansky and they all wished each other the best in their endeavors. Right now, it was time for Ash to get ready for his upcoming gym battle. As residents of Fuchsia City, Claude told Ash that the gym leader was Koga who specializes in poison types and mastered the ways of the ninja.
Ash and Serena rotated their teams before they left the Pokémon Center. Of course, he kept Greninja with him as he was his starter and now a Pokémon Munchlax will tend to look up to once in a while. His team now consisted of Greninja, Pidgeotto, Bulbasaur, Haunter, Muk, and Krabby. Ash was going to use Pidgeotto, Muk, and Bulbasaur in his gym battle. Ash was almost considering trying out his new Krabby. He was sick at one point, but he stepped up in the fight against Siegfried so he might get a gym battle soon. Greninja was going to get himself a break as a reward for his efforts of fighting Siegfried.
Serena only made one change to her team. She sent Slowpoke back to the lab and brought in Gyarados. Professor Sycamore suggested that Serena has Gyarados with her for an important reason. He was also smiling and acting positive when he said that, so it had to be something good. She was insisting on using Gyarados in her upcoming contest as she was going to use the same two Pokémon she planned on using in the Saffron City Contest which were Kadabra and Pinsir. Serena flopped in her appeal in Saffron City because her Kadabra back when he was still an Abra could only use Teleport, but now that he evolved he now has more of a variety. Her plans remain the same as well as she wanted to use Kadabra in the appeal round to show how much she and Kadabra improved since the last contest, and then Pinsir in the battle rounds as he looked more poised for battles, and not to mention she wants to finally give him a spotlight in a Pokémon contest.
The Pallet Town couple was going to need to start kicking it up a notch as this was now going to be the home stretch of the Pokémon League and Pokémon Contest season. Ash still had four badges, and Serena still had two ribbons, and it felt like forever since they last added to their collection. Saffron City didn't go well for either of them, so they hoped Fuchsia City would be a step in the right direction and to help them get a jump start to the finish line.
"I know the two of you are eager to get back to business," Sycamore said.
"We sure are, after all that's happened, it felt like forever since I got a badge. I'm completely pumped for my next gym battle," Ash declared pumping his fist.
Ash can still remember his previous gym battle with Sabrina. Her Kadabra completely wiped the floor with Greninja back when he was still Frogadier, and he gave him some back issues. Now those back issues are gone, and they've become stronger after Siegfried. Nothing was going to stop him now.
"And I bet you're looking forward to your next contest as well," Sophie told Serena.
"Of course, I am, I really want to show how much I've improved since my last contest," Serena answered while with a hint of being unsure.
It was true Kadabra was much more improved since their last contest, in fact she used Kadabra in her training when having some practice matches with Ash. Ash would need to know much as he can about Kadabra if he wishes to challenge the Saffron Gym again. He will need to beat Sabrina in order to enter the Pokémon League.
One thing that Ash noticed was how unsure Serena felt. Sure, she confessed to Ash about Lavender Town, but she didn't tell her moms or Professor Sycamore and his wife. Ash wondered if this mentality would affect her performance.
"You two lead the way to the Pokémon Center, I'm going to have a little chat with Serena," Ash told the professor and Sophie, "Munchlax, why don't you join them. This is something private that you don't know about."
Munchlax wasn't sure what Ash was talking about. He already knew about Zapdos and the GS Ball along with the fragment of power, so what was there that Ash keeping from him?
"Munchlax," Munchlax confirmed as he nodded his head and joined Sycamore and Sophie.
Ash pulled Serena to his side and gave a concerning look. He has forgiven Serena, but it could still act as a burden to her as it could affect her performance. If Ash loses a gym battle, he can come back anytime to challenge the gym again, but Serena will have limited chances to get five ribbons to enter the Grand Festival. If she doesn't get five ribbons before the Grand Festival, she will have to wait till next year.
"I fear that this could act as a burden on you," Ash whispered.
"What?" Serena questioned.
"What you did with Team Rocket," Ash sighed in a whisper.
Ash looked down and gave out another depressing sigh. He loved Serena, but she didn't want her to suffer because of this. Maybe it would be best that confesses this to the others.
"Listen, I don't want to ask your moms to come over here since they already we're around Kanto once, but when we get to the Pokémon Center, I suggest you confess to Professor Sycamore, Sophie, and your moms," Ash suggested.
"But, I don't want to scare my moms even more. You saw how they were after Siegfried, and we didn't even tell them about when we got killed," Serena whispered.
"I know, but they do care about your well-being, not just physically, but emotionally as well," Ash whispered, "Maybe you should bring this out as it can help lift the burden you have. Maybe your Pokémon should hear about it too."
"Even Munchlax?" Serena questioned in a whisper.
Ash looked at Munchlax. If he was going to be a good father figure with Serena on her side as a mother figure, then maybe they shouldn't keep any secrets.
"Yeah, we should tell Munchlax too," Ash suggested.
It was going to be tough for Serena to come to terms of what she did. She didn't know if she would get in trouble or get brought home, but it was for the best.
Fuchsia City-Pokémon Center
The group arrived at the Pokémon Center. The place was awfully busy as there were many Pokémon being taken care of after Siegfried came in and attack. A lot of Pokémon didn't make it, some are on life support, and others look like they may recover.
When they approached Nurse Joy, all of them had a look of shock on their faces. Her face was drooping, her eyes were red and half-opened. This was due to the fact that she got tired from all of that extra work with the Pokémon that came in.
"You don't look so well," Rotom Dex replied.
"I apologize, my hands have been full since we been receiving Pokémon from south-east Kanto," Nurse Joy responded.
"I know, it was all because of Siegfried," Sycamore uttered.
"Well I'm glad he's gone. The truth was, he was a sad excuse of a human being and deserved to die," Nurse Joy confessed.
Nurse Joy did hear the news about Siegfried being killed out in the savanna near Fuchsia City. There was even reports that he was coming for the Safari Zone next, but thanks to those heroic Pokémon, that wasn't going to happen. Nurse Joy recognized Sycamore and Sophie since they were here with Claude and Sherri.
"By the way, Sherri and Claude were here with Pidgeot. I checked her up and Pidgeot and her kids were discharged," Nurse Joy told them.
"That's great, that means they're alright," Sophie praised.
"Yeah, and they were here with Lance. They've left already with Lance and they wanted to say thank you for everything," Nurse Joy told them.
"I wish them the best with their future," Sycamore said giving a bow.
Ash and Serena unclipped their Pokeballs and placed Pikachu and Munchlax on the counter.
"Are you sure you don't want to check on our Pokémon?" Ash asked, "I mean I can understand how busy you are."
"Not a problem," Nurse Joy answered with a smile.
She took their Pokémon along with Pikachu and Munchlax and left the counter. Sure, they've been getting a few checkups after Siegfried, but it wouldn't hurt to double check. At least Nurse Joy was willing to accept Pokémon.
Serena was feeling pretty nervous. Professor Sycamore even noticed her behavior and it did concern him. While Grace and Jade have been taking care of her as her parents, he still was her father genetically and does seem to care for her well-being like any father would. She hasn't told them about how she helped the trio in Lavender Town. What makes matter more difficult, should Munchlax even know about this after hearing that his mother was killed by Team Rocket over a year ago?
"Is something wrong Serena?" Sycamore asked, "You know we're going to do something great for you for all you have done for Delphox and Greninja."
Serena let out a disappointing sigh. They're going to do something great for her, even though she feels like she shouldn't deserve it.
"I don't know if I deserve it after what I did," Serena sighed.
"Huh, what you did?" Sycamore questioned.
"Professor Sycamore, I'm going to make a call home and confess something to you and my moms. Ash already knows and maybe it would be best you hear it," Serena said, "After hearing this, you won't think I deserve this reward you're giving me."
Sycamore was feeling sad. Serena has done a great job with her Pokémon, including helping Delphox find her strength to fight Siegfried. He wonders why she doesn't feel like she deserves what she gets.
"Alright, we'll hear you out," Sycamore responded.
"Okay, I'll call home after I get my Pokémon back. I think Munchlax should hear it too," Serena said, "I hope he doesn't hate me after hearing what I got to say."
This was going to be hard for Serena. Professor Sycamore did seem a bit worried.
20 minutes later
Serena was on the video phone with her moms and Happy on the screen. Once they all got their Pokémon back, Serena called them to confess to them and Professor Sycamore and Sophie about what happened in Lavender Town. It hurts Ash for him to hear that again, but Munchlax was there to comfort him like how his father used to comfort him.
Surprisingly for Serena, Munchlax took it quite well. His father was wise enough to teach him about confessing their sins and showing forgiveness. Besides, he already dealt with much worse as she wasn't even responsible for the death of his mother he never met. In truth, he could consider her a saint compared to Shepard.
As for the adults, they were completely disappointed, but understanding. Serena was carrying this burden for some time and letting it out was to her elders was a big step into her maturing. While it did scare them that they bumped into Team Rocket again, they we're pleased that they we're alright at least throughout that ordeal in Lavender Town.
"Serena, you did the right thing telling us about this," Grace told her daughter.
"The fact that you're confessing your sins to those you know is a major step in growing up. As long as they forgive you," Jade stated.
It felt like a weight was off of Serena's shoulders. The fact that has forgiven her after she confessed wasn't just good for her, but good for him too. Sure, there were some bad people out there, but as long as they show forgiveness to those who've done wrong, it would make them a better person. If Ash we're to have ended his relationship with Serena, it wouldn't make him a better person in any way. That talk with Rotom Dex did them some good.
"I'm glad you guys understand this, and once again, I'm very sorry," Serena said with tears coming from her eyes.
"It's okay, it was understandable why you were helping those rockets. You we're trying to do what you can to save them, and giving them those ghost Pokémon back was the right thing to do," Jade explained, "Sure it may helped them further their goals which isn't good, but it might show them some light that you may have given them a second chance and they could see their errors and redeem themselves."
"And if you're lucky, you might actually be rewarded for that action," Grace said.
Professor Sycamore and Sophie were actually quite pleased that Serena was coming out with this. Helping Delphox putting her past behind was one great accomplishment but helping out criminals in hopes of saving their lives and confessing was something that took a lot of courage.
"You might be right mom," Serena said, "I just wanted to get this off my chest, so it doesn't mess with my confidence, and I hope you don't see any different."
"We don't Serena, we love you. Telling us this was the right thing to do," Jade told Serena, "Just try and stay away from Team Rocket from now on okay."
"Okay," Serena responded.
"Alright, that's good. Now you go out there and win that contest. We'll be watching you on TV so go for broke," Grace told Serena.
"I will, thanks," Serena replied as she was smiling again.
"We love you Serena," Grace and Jade said in union.
"I love you too moms," Serena replied as the video phone turned off.
It was good to hear that her moms were not holding any grudge against Serena for what she did in Lavender Town. Then again, Serena would probably run into Team Rocket again if she wanted to or not. Either way if she did, she would go out and stop them along with Ash.
"That was very brave of you Serena. It also shows that you're a forgiving person and that you tend to show mercy," Sycamore said.
"That's right, despite them being criminals, they're still human beings," Sophie commented.
"Thanks, I actually feel a lot better," Serena said, "I won't tell the authorities about what I did unless something really goes wrong."
"Probably for the best," Rotom Dex suggested.
While they were chatting, a boy with a red baseball cap and black hair was retrieving his Pokémon from Nurse Joy. After he got them, he noticed the group of four and the floating Pokedex. The boy's eyes widened when he saw who was in that group.
"Professor Sycamore, Sophie, Ash, Serena?" the boy questioned as he called them out.
The voice got everyone's attention and they turned around. Professor Sycamore and Sophie smiled at the sight of the boy who was standing there while Ash and Serena felt a bit of excitement of seeing him. Well Serena for the most part.
It was Calem Anderson, the Pokémon Coordinator that they've met in Viridian City and once again in Vermillion City.
"Calem!" Serena called out.
Serena ran up to Calem and gave him a gentle hug. Ash felt a bit of jealously when she gave him that affection, but she was his girlfriend now, so he didn't need to put himself into competition in any way of some sort.
"Serena, how are you?" Calem happily asked.
"I'm doing great," Serena answered.
"I take it you're here for the Fuchsia City Pokémon Contest," Calem smirked.
"You bet I am, I'm going to be competing for my third ribbon," Serena declared, "So watch out Calem, you might have gotten the better of me last time in Vermillion, but this time I'm going to win."
Calem had a bewildered look on his face. He just heard Serena was going for her third ribbon, and she didn't know about how he was doing. She had the thought that these two were going to go up against each other in the contest.
"You might be surprised at what I'm about to tell you Serena, but I'm actually not going to be entering this contest," Calem confessed.
"What!" Serena exclaimed, "How come?"
Calem reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver case. Calem was a little nervous about showing this to Serena as it will really make her feel inferior.
"Because I'm all done," Calem answered as he opened the case.
Serena gasped in both happiness and horror. Calem already has all five ribbons and was now qualified for the Grand Festival which made her proud of her rival, but at the same time it made her feel completely inferior to him as she was still at two ribbons and was far behind.
"You got all five ribbons?" Serena asked.
"I sure did," said Calem, "I'm actually going to be watching some contests so I can watch any potential opponents for the Grand Festival so I can study their progress."
"That means you'll be watching my contest?" Serena asked.
"Since you're competing in this contest, of course I will," Calem answered.
"Calem!" Sycamore called out.
Professor Sycamore, Sophie, Ash, Pikachu, Munchlax, and Rotom Dex all approached the black-haired coordinator. They were all smiling at him as they heard what he said.
"So, I heard you got all of your ribbons, congratulations," Sycamore said.
"Thank you professor, I'm going to represent the Kalos Region well in the Kanto Grand Festival," Calem praised.
"I know you will, especially since I was the one who started your career by giving you that Chespin," Sycamore said smiling.
"Of course, professor," Calem replied.
Serena can remember meeting that Chespin back in Viridian City and how well it did in the Viridian City Pokémon Contest. Then meeting Calem again in Vermillion City when Chespin evolved into Quilladin, she and Pikachu finally got to experience Quilladin's strengths first-hand. She was a little disappointed that she wouldn't be going up against Calem, but she was proud of him and hoped to challenge him soon or in the Grand Festival.
"How've you been Calem?" Ash asked.
"Doing fine Ash, how about you and Serena?" Calem asked.
"Me and Serena are doing great. I don't think she told you this, but we're now officially dating," Ash said.
"Wow, congratulations Ash," Calem praised.
"Yeah and as for me, I have four badges and I'm aiming for my fifth one," Ash told Calem.
"Sounds awesome," Calem replied.
Sycamore was happy with how everyone was interacting. A couple of days ago there was grief regarding Frogadier's and Braixen's emotional status that brought them here, and then they learn because Siegfried was here, and the encounter with him. But now all of that is aside and they can finally move forward.
"You know I was wondering since we're all together like this, why don't we all go out for dinner tonight in one of Fuchsia City's finest restaurants," Sycamore suggested, "My treat."
"You bet, I could go for a good meal," Ash said pumping his fist.
A nice meal was something that would make Ash happy. He hasn't had any amazing food since leaving Saffron City. Sure, Serena's cooking was good, but it was getting repetitive lately, especially during the trek from Lavender Town to Fuchsia City. So, a nice dinner with Professor Sycamore sounded perfect.
Fuchsia City-Hibachi Restaurant
Later that night, the group of five went to the finest hibachi restaurant in Fuchsia City. Professor Sycamore made reservations shortly after their conversation with Ash and Serena, and Calem was invited too. The restaurant allowed Pokémon too so Pikachu and Munchlax could join in.
Some people were worried that Munchlax would jump in and eat everyone's food, but Ash has informed that this Munchlax isn't one that eats a whole bunch. It was a surprising trait to that Munchlax since they were tended to eat a whole lot along with Snorlax. He must've learned his eating ways from his father, after all he did watch over a lot of Pokémon.
Sycamore, Sophie, Ash, Serena, Calem, and Munchlax all took a seat and ordered their respective foods. During that time, the group talked more about their travels from the Pokémon they collected, to some detailed explanations involving their gym battles and contests. Ash and Serena agreed not to talk about Team Rocket or their encounter with Siegfried, and they made sure not to talk about the GS Ball either.
After about half-hour, the chefs came out and stood in front of them. They turned on the grills and pulled out eggs and knives. The next thing they did they started to throw eggs up and in the air and juggle them with their knives like they were putting on some sort of show.
The group applauded along with the rest of the people sitting with them. Pikachu, Rotom Dex, and Munchlax also were clapping to the show in front of them. Then the chefs started throwing noodles on the grill in front of them, cooked them, and then served them to their guests. Those noodles were so delicious.
They would also cook up rice, vegetables, shrimps, and different kinds of meat while serving it to them on their plates. Everyone was eating what was on their plates including the Pokémon.
"Looks like Munchlax is enjoying the food," Sycamore happily said as he was watching Munchlax eat.
Munchlax was picking at the food like crazy and putting it in his mouth. As soon as he cleaned his plate, Munchlax slouched and rubbed his belly. That was the best meal he ever had in his life. The berries were good, but this urban food was delicious.
"I think the bigger surprise is Munchlax isn't eating other people's food," Calem stuttered.
"That's because his father taught him not to be a glutton and leave food for others," Rotom Dex stated as it smiled at Munchlax, "Living in a grotto with lots of Pokémon for your entire life does have its benefits."
As they were in the middle of their meals, Professor Sycamore looked at Ash and Serena. He remembered that he was going to talk to them about something.
"Now Ash, Serena, about what I was going to do," Sycamore stated.
This caught the Pallet Town couple's attention. Professor Sycamore said he was going to do something great for them. Just what was it?
"I have been thinking about you two and how you've been taking care of Greninja and Delphox back when they were just a Froakie and Fennekin," Sycamore brought up.
"What's that?" Ash asked.
"Well you two didn't give up on those Pokémon no matter how hard it got," Sycamore said.
"That's right, it was all because of the motto from Ash, never give up until the end," Serena kindly said, "No matter what happened to them, we weren't going to give up on our Pokémon."
"Not to mention Greninja and Delphox have opened up to us," Ash happily said as he looked at his blue Pokeball.
"And have developed feelings for each other," Serena giggled as she looked at her red Pokeball.
It was a sight to see when Greninja and Delphox kissed right after the battle with Siegfried. They probably would've never gotten that push forward in life if it weren't for them.
"Not only have the two of you helped them grow up, but what Serena told me earlier also has shown that probably both of you has taken responsibility," Sophie explained as she was mentioning her confession about Team Rocket.
Ash and Serena have been hearing nothing but positive feedback from them. Sycamore knew that Calem was around, but he figured it would be nice for him to hear the good news as well.
"After everything that has happened, we learned that giving Froakie and Fennekin to you was the right choice," Sycamore praised.
"You really think so?" Serena happily asked.
"No Serena, it was the right choice," Ash answered for her, "Because I wouldn't have it any other way."
"Me too," Serena replied.
"Well, the fact that you two have turned Greninja's and Delphox's lives around for the better along with your other accomplishments shows that you two will be rewarded," Sycamore happily said, "And I just know how to pay you back."
"You already have, with dinner," Ash jokingly said.
"Thanks Ash, but that's not what I meant," Sycamore told Ash with a chuckle, "I meant something bigger than a hibachi dinner."
Professor Sycamore was reaching into his bag and pulled out a small black box. Sophie looked at the box and knew what was in there. Everyone including the Pokémon glanced at the box. Munchlax ran closer as he knew this was going to be something good for Ash.
"I've been taking time looking for these for both of you, and I've managed to find some," Sycamore said as he opened the box.
Ash and Serena gasped when they saw what was in the box. It was two silver bracelets, but there was one detail that stood out. There were rainbow colored marbles on each of those bracelets with swerve designs.
"Ash Ketchum, Serena Gabena, these are for you," Sycamore declared.
They were completely bewildered by what they saw. Calem heard of those things, but he never actually seen on in person, except for the one on the professor's wrist. Ash and Serena grabbed the bracelets from the box and placed them on their left wrist.
"These bracelets look lovely," Serena said modeling the bracelet.
"Well what you two are wearing aren't just ordinary bracelets, they're Mega Bracelets," Sophie said.
"And if you look closely, you can see that they each consist of a Keystone," Sycamore stated.
"You mean those rainbow marbles in there?" Ash questioned.
"You got it," Sycamore answered, "Your gift from us is the ability to use Mega Evolution."
Ash, Serena, and Calem gasped. The Pallet Town couple was now eligible to use Mega Evolution. Munchlax saw the new bracelet on his surrogate father's wrist, and he thought it looked cool.
"You really think we deserve to use Mega Evolution?" Serena asked.
"Serena, you and Ash earned it. You have proven you won't be going in the wrong direction in life," Sycamore stated.
"I see," Serena said looking at her wrist.
"So, professor, do you mind telling me how Mega Evolution works?" Calem asked.
Professor Sycamore smiled when Calem asked that. He was the one who gave him Chespin to begin his journey, so it would be practical that he knows about Mega Evolution from him. Especially since he studies it.
"I would be happy to Calem," Sycamore said as he cleared his throat to start talking about it, "As you know Mega Evolution is when a fully evolved Pokémon temporarily evolves even further, and sometimes they may even gain another type or ability."
Ash and Serena may have heard about this already, but it's nice to get a refresher, especially since they will get to use it.
"Three things are needed to Mega Evolve a Pokémon, first is a Keystone which is those rainbow looking marbles that I've given Ash and Serena, second is a corresponding Mega Stone that the Pokémon must hold in order for it to happen, and third and most importantly is a powerful bond between the trainer and the Pokémon. Put all of those things together and a Pokémon will be capable of Mega Evolving," Sycamore explained.
Ash and Serena smiled when they heard that. It probably made sense why the professor asked her to bring her Gyarados with. It was because she was capable of Mega Evolving.
"And I bet in a video game world, you just need a Keystone and a corresponding Mega Stone," Rotom Dex jokingly said.
"Probably," Sophie chuckled.
Rotom Dex, Munchlax, and Pikachu already have witnessed Mega Evolution when Sycamore used it on his Garchomp to fight Siegfried. Garchomp was doing great until Siegfried brought the mother Pidgeot up as a human shield. Now Ash and Serena were going to be using it.
"Serena, after dinner I'm suggesting you and I have a one on one Pokémon battle," Sycamore suggested.
"A Pokémon battle?" Serena questioned.
"Yes, to test out Mega Evolution. I asked you to bring Gyarados over because as of now between the two of you, that's the only Pokémon you guys have that is capable of mega evolving right now," Sycamore explained.
Serena looked at Gyarados's Pokeball. It made sense now. Professor Sycamore wanted Serena to give Mega Evolution a try herself.
"I would love too," Serena chirped, "Even though I'm not using Gyarados in my next contest."
"This is awesome, I get to see Mega Evolution first-hand," Calem said in excitement.
This was a great night for the group so far. They met Calem again, they got to enjoy a great hibachi dinner, and now Ash and Serena got Keystones which will gain them access to Mega Evolution.
Ash would love to see the look on Gary's and Paul's face when they can see he can use Mega Evolution.
Fuchsia City-Behind the Pokémon Center
As the stars sparkled in the night sky, Serena and Sycamore were now standing on separate sides. Serena had Gyarados's Pokeball in her hand while Sycamore had Garchomp's in his hand. Ash, Calem, and Sophie were sitting next to each other with Pikachu on Ash's shoulder and Munchlax in front of Ash.
"Get ready Munchlax, you're going to see an actual Pokémon battle take place," Ash told Munchlax.
"Munchlax," Munchlax nervously said.
"Don't worry Munchlax, it's not like what was going on with Siegfried. This is a fun Pokémon battle where it act as a sport, not a fight for survival. You'll need to watch these carefully because one day, I'll have you take part in these," Ash explained to Munchlax.
Munchlax was feeling better when Ash said that. At least they won't be trying to kill each other. Munchlax did wonder how he would fare when he takes part in a Pokémon battle. If he wanted to be as strong as his father, or even stronger, then he would have to take part in these soon.
"Now get ready Munchlax, we're going to get a look at Mega Evolution," Ash said as he bent down and put his hands on Munchlax's shoulders.
Munchlax let out a relaxing deep breath when Ash did that. At least he was going to see something amazing.
"This will be a one on one battle between Serena Gabena and Augustine Sycamore where they will showcase Mega Evolution! Last one standing is the winner!" Rotom Dex announced as its screen showed pictures of Serena and Sycamore.
"Come on out Gyarados!" Serena yelled out sending out Gyarados.
"Garchomp, let's go!" Sycamore yelled out sending out Garchomp.
The two Pokémon emerged from their Pokeballs. Gyarados and Garchomp were locking eyes with each other. Ash and Serena have never seen a Garchomp before so Rotom Dex took the time to gather data.
#445-Garchomp: Mach Pokémon
It flies at the speed of sound while searching for prey, and it has midair battles with Salamence as the two compete for food.
"Alright Serena let's warm up before we test Mega Evolution out," Sycamore suggested.
"Great idea," Serena smirked.
"Alright then, Garchomp lets start things off with Dual Chop!" Sycamore commanded.
"Gyarados use Aqua Tail!" Serena retorted
Garchomp charged at Gyarados with his scythe hands, but Gyarados used her Aqua Tail to block Garchomp's Dual Chop attack. Garchomp was pushed back and Gyarados regained her battle stance.
"Nice job Garchomp, now let's try Dragon Rage," Sycamore called out.
"Alright Gyarados, show Garchomp your own Dragon Rage," Serena told Gyarados.
Both Pokémon started charging yellow orbs and firing them at each other. However, due to the experience and strength of Garchomp, his Dragon Rage just overpowered Gyarados's which caused the Atrocious Pokémon to be knocked back a little bit.
"That Dragon Rage was pretty strong," Ash stated.
"I agree, Augustine had that Garchomp for quite a while so he's an experienced battler," Sophie explained.
Then the two Pokémon clashed again with more attacks. Garchomp thrusted his arm forward with a blue glow around it to use Dragon Claw, but Gyarados halted his arm while she chomped down on it harder than a bite. Gyarados was using Crunch. Then Gyarados picked Garchomp up with her mouth and threw her a couple yards away from her. The Mach Pokémon got back up on his feet and rubbed his arm off and locked eyes with Gyarados again.
"I'm impressed Serena, Gyarados seems to be doing quite well," Sycamore complemented.
"Thank you professor, I made sure Gyarados got all the training and love she could get so she become big and strong," Serena explained.
"Well then, I guess you won't have any trouble using that Keystone on Gyarados," Sycamore said as he was now looking at the Mega Stone on Gyarados's ear, "What a clever way for Gyarados to don her Mega Stone."
"Thank you, it serves both as an accessory to fashion and Mega Evolution," Serena stated.
Sycamore smiled at Serena's comment. Now it was time for them to put Mega Evolution to the test. Serena could see the collar on Garchomp that consisted of his Mega Stone.
"Alright Serena, here's what I want you to do. I want you to lean your left wrist towards Gyarados and then tap the Keystone to activate it," Sycamore told Serena as he leaned his wrist, "Allow me to demonstrate."
Sycamore had his wrist directed towards Garchomp and then he tapped his Keystone and it started to shine. The Garchompite started to shine on Garchomp's collar as well and the next thing that happened, Garchomp was engulfed in a white light and then he changed form.
Garchomp became light blue with a head that almost looked like a torpedo with a huge jaw, a red upper body in the front, blue blades for hands with red on the ends, and a long tail where the end looked like an anchor along with shark teeth on the front of his body.
Ash and Calem watched in awe as they saw what happened to Garchomp. Pikachu and Munchlax were surprised as well. They never even noticed Garchomp mega evolving when they were fighting Siegfried, but now they got a closer look.
"Wow, amazing," Serena uttered.
Serena couldn't believe how his Garchomp changed completely. Ash was looking stunned as well. So, his Pidgeotto and Haunter would be able to that one day when they reach their final evolved forms. Serena knew Kadabra would be capable of doing that as well, but right now she can only wonder one thing. How would Gyarados fare to the Mega Evolution.
"So that's Mega Evolution," Calem said.
"Alright Serena, now you try," Sycamore called out, "Remember to bring your wrist towards Gyarados and then press the Keystone."
Serena took a deep breath and brought her left wrist forward. She had a serious look on her face, but she felt a little nervous as well. The next thing Serena did, she quickly tapped her Keystone and Gyarados was now engulfed in a white light.
Gyarados was going through a metamorphosis as he was evolving even further. Once the light died down, Gyarados looked completely different. Gyarados now had a darker shade of blue with red scales and a black belly along with two long whiskers that extended to his tail. The biggest detail however were the two viper fins on her back.
"Whoa," Serena gasped.
"Roar!" Gyarados roared.
"As I have researched through Mega Evolution, Pokémon don't just gain a form and more power, they also are capable of different abilities and possibly they can gain another type," Sycamore explained.
"Really?" Serena questioned.
"Yeah," Sycamore answered, "Rotom Dex should be able to gather that information."
Rotom Dex heard Sycamore out and analyzed Garchomp and Gyarados once more. The floating Pokedex was now gaining data on their mega forms and it was spinning with joy with the information it gained.
"You will not believe the changes that have come from each Pokémon," Rotom Dex announced.
"Go ahead, tell us," Ash excitedly said.
"Pikachu," Pikachu replied.
"Munchlax," Munchlax replied with some clapping.
"Tell them Rotom Dex so they can learn about these forms," Sycamore called out.
Rotom Dex was gathering the information once more and it began to present information on Garchomp.
"Mega Garchomp is slightly slower but has a major boost in attack power both physical and special with slightly higher defense. Also, Garchomp's ability changes from Sand Veil to Sand Force in their mega evolved forms," Rotom Dex explained.
Rotom Dex then regained information on Mega Gyarados and presented that to the group as well.
"Mega Gyarados has a massive boost in attack and special defense with a slight increase in defense and special attack while her speed remains the same. Gyarados also has a different ability changing from Intimidate to Mold Breaker, and to top it all off, Gyarados's flying type has been replaced with dark type," Rotom Dex explained.
This caught Serena by surprise. She thought maybe Gyarados was part dragon-type, but not flying-type. It also amazed her that Mega Gyarados was part water and part dark now.
"So Gyarados can change types when she mega evolves?" Serena questioned in astonishment.
"According to Rotom Dex, that's right," Sycamore answered.
Ash and Calem sat there wondering what other Pokémon could harness Mega Evolution besides the two that were in front of them. Surely Pidgeotto, Haunter, and Kadabra would join the ranks along with Gyarados, but he still wonders who else could witness that, and would they gain another type as well.
There would be no point testing it on Pikachu since he likely would have to be a Raichu, and as he looks at Munchlax, he wonders maybe he could when he evolves into a Snorlax. Maybe some of his other Pokémon along with Serena's would be capable of that too, but only time would tell.
"Okay Serena now let's test their powers out," Sycamore told Serena.
"You got it!" Serena exclaimed.
"Garchomp use Sandstorm!" Sycamore retorted.
Mega Garchomp whipped up a Sandstorm and the whole battlefield looked like a windy desert. Mega Gyarados's was squinting her eyes as sand was getting in the way. She may be stronger, but her eyes definitely were not immune to sand.
"Fight it Gyarados use Brine!" Serena called out.
Mega Gyarados sent out a massive force of water at Garchomp. The Mach Pokémon stood his ground and took the attack while raising his arms. Garchomp was a ground type, but thanks to his dragon-type, he wouldn't have to take as much damage. Mega Garchomp then roared at Mega Gyarados.
"What the?" Serena questioned.
"Haven't you forgotten Serena, Garchomp is a ground type, but he's also part dragon which makes water attacks normal power, not to mention the defensive boost from Mega Evolution allowed Garchomp to stand his ground," Sycamore explained.
"I didn't realize that," Serena responded.
"Well as a long-time researcher of Mega Evolution, I know the strengths of certain mega evolved Pokémon very well, most likely Garchomp. Now you're going to see the terror of Mega Garchomp," Sycamore announced, "Garchomp use Sand Tomb!"
Garchomp unleashed a sand tornado right at Mega Gyarados. The Atrocious Pokémon tried to escape, but she failed as Mega Gyarados was caught in the Sand Tomb. The power of the sand caused Mega Gyarados to screech in pain, and the Sandstorm only made things worse.
"Thanks to Mega Garchomp's Sand Force ability, his ground attacks are even stronger when in a sandstorm!" Sycamore announced.
Serena gritted her teeth as Sycamore was right. Mega Garchomp's Sand Force made the attack even worse. As she watched her Mega Gyarados struggle in Sand Tomb, she needed to figure out how to get her out of there. What pros does Gyarados have when she mega evolves besides high attack power.
"I guess I could keep Gyarados in there until Garchomp comes in at close range," Serena thought to herself.
Serena stood there as Mega Gyarados continues to suffer from the Sand Tomb attack. This didn't seem right that a Pokémon should just stand there and take attacks.
"Alright let's put an end to this, Garchomp use Dig!" Sycamore called out.
Serena smiled, finally Mega Garchomp was going to come in close. Right now, a close-range attack might be the best option.
"Dig?" Ash questioned, "But I thought Sycamore said Gyarados was a flying-type."
"Gyarados is a flying-type, when she is in her normal form. When mega evolved, Gyarados doesn't have the flying-type, because it's replaced with the dark-type. Not to mention if it weren't for Serena mega evolving her Gyarados, that now means she's vulnerable to ground type attacks. So, the professor wouldn't be using moves like Sand Tomb or Dig if Gyarados didn't mega evolve," Calem explained.
This blew Ash's mind away. There was a con with Gyarados mega evolving, she would lose her immunity to ground-type attacks, not to mention she would actually be much more vulnerable to fighting-type attacks, bug-type attacks, fairy-type attacks, and of course grass-type attacks. Yikes, Mega Evolution can be tricky if not used properly. Despite a boost in status, it could also open the door to more vulnerabilities.
Meanwhile, Mega Gyarados was still stuck in the Sand Tomb attack and Serena was grimacing. She looked at the ground and saw marks coming out which indicated Mega Garchomp was underneath. Serena watched as the ground marks were coming closer to Mega Gyarados and right when Mega Garchomp seemed to be underneath, Serena called her out.
"Gyarados use Aqua Tail on the ground!" Serena called out.
Mega Gyarados heard Serena and used her Aqua Tail. Mega Garchomp came out of the ground, but Mega Gyarados beat him to the punch as Mega Garchomp was whipped very hard by the power of Mega Gyarados's Aqua Tail. Mega Garchomp was knocked back and Serena smiled.
"Good job Gyarados!" Serena called out.
"Yeah Serena, perfect timing with that Aqua Tail. You really did a good number to Garchomp," Sycamore said praising Serena, "But how does that benefit you?"
"What do you mean?" Serena questioned.
"I mean, the attack did some immense damage, but Gyarados is still trapped," Sycamore stated, "Not to mention the power of Garchomp's Sand Tomb is doing a great number to her."
Serena gasped as Sycamore was right. She was hoping for a close-range attack, but she didn't focus on getting Mega Gyarados out of there. Now she was taking more damage than before, and before she knew it, she collapsed onto the ground.
The Sand Tomb finally stopped and Mega Gyarados reverted back to her normal form. The Atrocious Pokémon was laying on the ground, not moving at all.
"Gyarados is unable to battle, the winner is Garchomp! That means the winner of this match is Professor Sycamore!" Rotom Dex announced as the screen on Rotom Dex showed Sycamore's face with the words WINNER underneath.
"Nice job Garchomp!" Sycamore called out.
Mega Garchomp gave out an approving roar as he went back to his normal form. Serena sadly walked over to Gyarados who was on the ground. She held her hand over her heart and looked at Gyarados.
"It's my fault we lost Gyarados. I didn't take proper precautions of your new abilities," Serena told Gyarados, "But you did a great job, take a good rest."
Gyarados smiled and nodded her head before being returned to the Pokeball. The professor walked up to Serena giving out a loud sigh.
"Serena, you understood why you lost to me didn't you," Sycamore stated.
"Yeah, it was because I was so intended on using Gyarados's higher attack power to help me win," Serena answered, "It was the only good pro I could think of for Gyarados to help us win."
"That seems to be one of the big reasons you lost. First of all, I'm an expert when it comes to Mega Evolution, so I know how it works, but more importantly you got to think about the possible downsides too," Sycamore explained.
"What do you mean?" Serena asked.
Ash and Calem walked over along with Pikachu, Munchlax, Rotom Dex, and Sophie.
"The fact that Gyarados's flying-type was replaced with dark-type took away her immunity to ground-type attacks, not to mention she can also be more vulnerable to other types of attacks as well. If you never mega evolved Gyarados in the battle, Garchomp would've never been able to use his ground attacks like Sand Tomb and Dig. Be lucky I did not have him use Earthquake," Sycamore stated.
Serena was looking down with a glum look on her face.
"If you and Ash want to be experience with Mega Evolution, you have to learn to also manage the possible negatives that could come with certain Mega Evolutions. My opinion from that battle was that you should've tried letting Gyarados use some of her special attacks or anything else to break free from the Sand Tomb instead of trying to work with the positives," Sycamore explained.
"You're right, and it was wrong of me to leave Gyarados hanging in there like that," Serena said as she looked at Sycamore, "Next time I'm going to figure out how to get Gyarados out of a situation like that instead of trying to bring the target close to her."
"That's more like it," Sycamore said with a smile.
"Remember, Mega Evolution has its positives, but it also comes with some downsides and hardships. If you learn how to handle those challenges when using Mega Evolution, then you'll be able to master using that in battle in no time," Sophie stated.
Serena was feeling much better. It was true, this was just her first time using it and she has no experience with it. This little battle with the professor was just a test-out and it would help her, and Ash learn more about managing Mega Evolution in their challenges.
"Thanks for the information. I'm sure me and Ash can learn how to use Mega Evolution throughout time," Serena said as she then realized something, "I almost forgot to ask, can I use it in Pokémon Contests?"
This never came to anyone's mind, not even Calem who happens to be a Pokémon Coordinator soon to be taking part in the Grand Festival.
"You can Serena, it's legal to use it in Pokémon Contests," Sycamore answered nodding his head, "But there is one thing I should warn you two about when it comes to Mega Evolution."
"What's that?" Ash asked.
"Once you have used the Keystone to mega evolve any Pokémon, the keystone will take four hours to recharge before it can be used again," Sycamore explained.
Ash and Serena both gasped when they heard that.
"Four hours!" they both gasped in union.
"That's right, so think carefully when you're going to use it," Sycamore stated.
Well this would make Mega Evolution much more complex than it already is. Not only would they have to learn about the pros and cons of Mega Evolution for the Pokémon that can harness it, but if they take part in a contest or maybe a six-on-six Pokémon battle, they will need to know who should use it and when it should be used. Serena can pretty much imagine if she ever used Mega Evolution in one of her contests, it would most likely be on the final stage.
"We will," Ash responded.
"Hey professor, let me ask you something," Rotom Dex said to get Sycamore's attention, "Let's say there is a six-on-six Pokémon battle and someone has two Pokémon that can mega evolve. They use Mega Evolution right away on the first Pokémon and suddenly the battle goes on over four hours and the last Pokémon can also mega evolve and does so, does that mean two Pokémon on the same side can mega evolve?" Rotom Dex asked.
Sycamore slightly chuckled. That was an interesting scenario that could take place.
"Actually Rotom Dex, the Pokémon League forbids any multiple Mega Evolutions. Each trainer that can harness it can only use it once during the battle. So, I wouldn't worry about that in an official Pokémon battle," Sycamore answered.
"Alrighty," Rotom Dex replied.
Ash, Serena, and Calem all gave out a friendly chuckle. At least they won't have to worry about someone using multiple Mega Evolutions in a Pokémon battle ever.
Saffron City-Silph Company
Things have been pretty rough over at Silph Company. The Master Ball that has been used on Lapras broke free after the four-hundred and seventy-first attempt. Now they had to gather Full Restores, modify the Master Ball more, and start all over.
Hector felt like he was living a nightmare as he had to keep going with the experiment. It was one thing following Team Rocket's orders to stay alive, but now all of that trust and love he gained from Lapras after saving him was being washed away as he had to continue this demented experiment. Lapras was crying, despite the Full Restores. While they can heal her physically, they couldn't heal her emotionally.
Professor Namba had been monitoring the tests on the Master Ball. Despite that setback, things were going smoothly again.
"When do I get a break?" Hector asked as he tossed the Master Ball again at Lapras.
"Once Lapras has been captured a thousand times straight," Namba uttered.
"Can we just stop, I think this Master Ball works fine," Hector said.
"We don't fine, we want perfection! If this Master Ball is meant to capture any Pokémon at 100%, then going on a one-thousand catching streak on a Pokémon that seems difficult to catch is the best way to prove the Master Ball works," Namba explained.
"Can we try it on another Pokémon?" Hector asked, "I don't think Lapras can take it anymore."
"That Lapras is our best test subject! We're not going to test these on Pidgeys or Weedles on a count of those Pokémon are easy to capture!" Namba argued.
Namba made a point, Lapras was the best Pokémon they had in the building that they could test the Master Ball out on. If they want to succeed in catching Mewtwo, they have to do everything they can to make sure this special ball works.
Then to his expense, Namba pull out a handgun and pointed it at Hector.
"Now get back to work," Namba darkly uttered.
Hector was threatened to do Team Rocket's dirty work. He released Lapras again and then proceeded into catching it once more. Hector prays that someone comes in here soon and put an end to this.
Silph Company-President's Office
As Giovanni has been monitoring the tests on Lapras, he has been working on plans to target Ash and Serena. Unfortunately, his spies were unable to track them down when they went south from Lavender Town after what happened at the Kanto Power Plant. This was due to the fact that they had to lock the southeast portion of Kanto down due to Siegfried.
Giovanni screamed at the rockets for not trying to get through the lockdown to go after Ash and Serena, but they said that if they argue with the authorities, they suspect something, and the police would be on to them. Giovanni argued that Ash and Serena were to be punished no matter the price, and that the rockets said they were only trying to protect themselves and him.
After hearing that, Giovanni would take them to the outskirts of Saffron City with his Persian who would slash their necks killing them. He would return feeling furious. Now he had no idea where Ash and Serena had gone, because those rockets refused to get past the police barricade. They were reminding him of Jessie, James, and Meowth.
While Team Rocket wanted to get Ash and Serena, they have made sure to pay attention to their other projects. The Master Ball was going smoothly again, Mewtwo's development was going quite well. Giovanni just needed to be reminded of those things and eventually he would have his way with those two trouble-making kids.
"Giovanni," Arianna called out as she walked into the room with a newspaper, "You might want to read this."
Giovanni frowned at his wife. He didn't have time to read the newspaper, but he didn't have anything better to do so he decided to take a look. Giovanni's eyes had a look of interest as he saw a certain headline.
The newspaper reported that the evil Pokémon hunter Siegfried was actually killed along with a park ranger being arrested for corruption. What really got his attention though was a description of what Pokémon were involved with the hunter when he was killed. Witnesses who were not to be named said that the two Pokémon that stood out the most were a Greninja and a Delphox.
"A Greninja and a Delphox?" Giovanni questioned, "I don't think I ever heard of those Pokémon."
"That's because you never been out of Kanto as much," Arianna stated.
Team Rocket has never heard of those Pokémon. Many people were wondering where those Pokémon came from since they were not found in Kanto, but in Kalos.
"So, what does Greninja and Delphox have to do with any of this?" Giovanni asked.
"Giovanni, I've actually been around parts of the world before seeing you, so I know some of these Pokémon," Arianna explained, "According to Pokémon research, Greninja is the evolved form of Frogadier who is the evolved form of Froakie."
"Okay," Giovanni stuttered with his arms crossed.
"And Delphox is the evolved form of Braixen who is the evolved form of Fennekin," Arianna explained.
"Go on," Giovanni responded.
"Greninjas and Delphoxs are not found in Kanto and judging by the fact that a Greninja and Delphox are the final evolved forms of those Pokémon owned by Ash Ketchum and Serena Gabena and they played a part in killing Siegfried, that means that Ash and Serena were around when Siegfried was there," Arianna explained.
Giovanni's face lightened up when he heard that. He can recall from the other rockets including his executives that they did have a Froakie and a Fennekin. Who else in Kanto would have such Pokémon? The only ones Team Rocket knew who could have those Pokémon were Ash and Serena. Archer was there when Froakie and Fennekin evolved into their second stages. So that meant they evolved sometime after the incident at the power plant.
"So, what you're saying is that Ash Ketchum and Serena Gabena are in southeast portion of the Kanto Region?" Giovanni questioned.
"Well we don't know exactly, but I can assume that they were there. And if our records show, Ash Ketchum is aiming to enter the Pokémon League and Serena Gabena is proceeding to compete in the Kanto Grand Festival," Arianna explained as he had more data on them.
Giovanni now had her full attention. Now he knew what Ash and Serena were doing. Maybe he now knew how to get to them.
"Since they left Lavender Town, they must be going to Fuchsia City where Ash can get another gym badge. And there is also a Pokémon Contest taking place in a few days. If my theory is correct, then Ash and Serena will be in Fuchsia City," Arianna explained.
It seems Siegfried may have helped them out after all. Now that the reports showed a Greninja and Delphox being involved with the hunter, and the fact that Ash and Serena are likely the only ones in the whole region to have those Pokémon, that might have narrowed down where they are.
"Nicely done Arianna, now we can send a unit after them," Giovanni stated.
"Not yet, we need proof that they are there, and we don't want to draw any unwanted attention. I suggest we watch the Fuchsia City Pokémon Contest on TV, and if that girl shows up, that will confirm that they are in Fuchsia City," Ariana explained.
Giovanni didn't like being patient, but maybe his wife was right. She was a leader herself after all trying to help out. Ariana did believe Giovanni was a bit too hesitant on those other rockets. She kind of wished Archer was here, but he was watching Mewtwo with Petrel.
"Alright Ariana, we'll watch the contest coming up. If Serena Gabena does participate, then we can send our agents over to get them," Giovanni confirmed.
"Thank you," Ariana responded.
Ariana was looking forward to finally meeting up with Ash and Serena. Truth be told, she really wanted those other women from Celadon City around with them when Team Rocket teaches them a lesson, but Giovanni only insisted on Ash and Serena. Ariana would make sure that their mothers and Ash's aunt would get something at them as well.
The Next Day
Fuchsia City-Pokémon Center
After Serena and Sycamore had their match to test out Mega Evolution, the group decided to call it a night, except for Ash as he wanted to get in some training before his gym battle.
Today was the day Ash would challenge Koga for his fifth badge, and this time he was ready. Ash was planning to use Pidgeotto, Muk, and Bulbasaur. Sure, Bulbasaur was a grass-type, but thanks to his dual poison-type, he wouldn't be taking as much damage to poison attacks as any grass-type Pokémon would.
Ash, Serena, Calem, Sycamore, and Sophie were all at the table eating breakfast. They all had a great time last night witnessing Mega Evolution and learning more about it. Ash and Serena couldn't wait to try it out more so they can learn more about their Pokémon's mega evolved forms.
Calem glazed at the two Pokémon. Pikachu was eating an omelet and of course he had his beloved ketchup. Munchlax was given a bowl of oatmeal and the Big Eater Pokémon devoured it quickly. Despite being a Pokémon that eats a lot, this Munchlax was no glutton as he was taught to make sure everyone had their share of food. In fact, Munchlax felt satisfied.
"I'm surprised that Munchlax doesn't eat a lot," Calem said, "Especially since eating a lot is in their nature."
"That's because his father taught him to share his food and not hog food for himself," Rotom Dex answered.
Calem smiled at what Rotom Dex said. No one ever met his father, but he's the responsible caring Pokémon he is today because of him. Ash wasn't his father, but he was going to fill the void for him.
"Well I say this Munchlax is a great Pokémon," Calem said.
"You bet he is, and today he gets to see me win my fifth badge," Ash said looking at Munchlax.
It struck Munchlax in the head, he didn't get to actually see Ash in action yet with a Pokémon battle. This gym battle would be the perfect opportunity to see what he would be doing with Ash.
"I know you'll win this time," Serena said.
"You bet I am, I won't have a repeat of my Saffron Gym battle," Ash declared as he stood up and pumped his fist, "We're going to win!"
Serena smiled at Ash. Those last couple of days helped them get stronger, from Lavender Town, to the Power Plant, and most importantly, Siegfried. The two were now looking forward to what was to come.
"Hey if you don't mind, can I watch your gym battle?" Calem asked.
"Actually, come to think of it, since we're all here, do you mind if me and wife watched your battle Ash?" Sycamore asked, "It would be a great opportunity to see your experience up close."
"And we can even stay to watch your contest Serena," Sophie added on.
This was a joyful occasion. Ash and Serena can remember when their mothers and Ash's aunt came to Celadon City and watched Ash win his Rainbow Badge and Serena win her second ribbon. It was truly special for them to see their kids in person how they were doing and winning, and to add to everything else, they even showed the ropes to a new trainer. Now they can show their progress off to Professor Sycamore and Sophie, along with Serena's rival.
"That sounds like a great idea!" Ash exclaimed.
This was going to be an exciting time for the group. Ash was going to get his fifth badge soon, and he had another great supporting cast like back in Celadon City. Ash would make sure he wins this time.
At long last, Ash and Serena have finally obtained their Keystones!
Only Serena's Gyarados can mega evolve right now, but other Pokémon will join in eventually. Our favorite Pallet Town couple will get more Mega Stones along the way.
Team Rocket is back in action and it seems they're going to be looking for Ash and Serena.
Another thing that surprises you all, the flashback at the beginning of the chapter. Annie actually met Jade, Serena's mother, while she was running away from home. We'll learn more about that in due time.
There is a new poll up which involves Munchlax. The question in the poll is would you like Munchlax's battle debut be in Ash's final gym battle? I've already decided the team Ash would use in that gym battle, and if Munchlax does come in, I know which Pokémon Munchlax will take over for. I'm going to keep the results a mystery and this poll will be taken down right before Ash aims for his sixth badge.
Well it's been an eternity, but we finally get to have a gym battle in the next chapter. Serena's contest will follow that chapter. Sorry everyone, but as you can see, Greninja won't take part in this gym battle. Consider Greninja being rewarded with some downtime after Siegfried.
Until then, see you next time!
