Chapter 58: Grief
This is requested by Star WarsLady and a guest called Future Teacher. Enjoy. Read and review.
It was another mission, right? Nothing would go wrong, everyone said. Except it did. Kanan couldn't do anything as Darth Maul ran a lightsaber through his Padawan's stomach. "NOOO!" Kanan screamed, but Maul laughed cruelly. He kicked Ezra's lifeless body off the edge of the walkway. Ezra fell, and Kanan used the Force to bring him back up, but he couldn't bring him back to life. He glared at Maul with hatred in his eyes.
"You…" Kanan started, but he was unable to continue as a sob erupted from his throat.
"I?" Maul asked with a cruel sneer.
"I will kill you."
"I will love to see you try." Maul and Kanan moved into their preferred stance. Their lightsabers clashed back and forth before Kanan let out a roar of anger. He slammed his lightsaber harshly against Mauls and he slashed up. He took off one of Maul's hands, and the hand still gripping the lightsaber spun lazily into the darkness below. Maul glared. Kanan stabbed Maul through the stomach, and again in his chest, and again in his throat. Maul let out a gurgle before he collapsed lifeless against the metal floor. Kanan stood there, his breath harsh and loud. His eyes changed from his soothing blue to a hostile, molten yellow. His lightsaber flowed from blue to red.
LINE BREAK _
Ezra flew up into a sitting position with sweat pouring off his forehead. Tears fell from his eyes, and silent sobs wracked his body. Panic made it impossible to think rationally. If he could think, then he would realize that he was alive, Maul was nowhere near him, and Kanan was safe in his room. The panic attack lasted for five minutes before exhaustion forced Ezra to breath deeply. He calmed down, and while panic and fear raced across the nerves in his body, Ezra looked around. He was in his bunk, and Zeb's snores filled the room. There was the hum of the Ghost in orbit around their most recent location of safety. Ezra climbed down off the top bunk as quickly as his shaky legs would let him. He stumbled his way to Kanan's room and opened the door without knocking.
Kanan cracked his eyes when his door whooshed open. When he saw Ezra, he lifted the blankets up with one of his arms. Ezra crawled underneath the covers and the Kanan's arm. Kanan lowered the blankets over Ezra, and he pulled Ezra closer to him.
"Shh… it was just a nightmare."
Ezra buried his face into the hollow of Kanan's neck, and after a few tears slipped out, his shaky breath evened out. The two of them fell asleep, feeling safe and relaxed for the first time in a while.
