Stokes talks to Hoffman, asking why she wanted Vicky killed. He wants to know what made Elizabeth decide to keep Maggie.
"I know that there is no need to sacrifice her now. But to have her a the lady of Collinwood... someone who can take after her."
"Elizabeth does not think that it is her time yet."
"Not yet, but in seven years it shall be. She is getting old, and has begun to have health problems. It would be a shame to waste her death."
Hoffman shivers. "I am glad that I never married into the family. My children are not Collinses."
"Beware Miss Hoffman. There are plenty of Collinses now. But if at one time there are not enough, your children and grandchildren might be called"
"So I have to make sure that there are plenty."
"Yes. Make sure that the Loomises do not leave, and that Carolyn produces at least three children. As it is it will be now this Barnabas Collins, then Elizabeth, then Will Loomis. Then it might be Carolyn, as Elizabeth will not longer protect her. Then Quentin who will have had enough children. Then the room will probably bring another Collins by that time. Then Carolyn's and Quentin's children will carry the burden."
"And Quentin's wife?"
"What can you tell me of this Maggie? What made Elizabeth choose her over Victoria, who we already know is fertile?"
"She is educated, artistic, sensitive, she looks like a lady. She is... classy."
"And Elizabeth always yearned for class. Yes, Victoria is somewhat vulgar, while Maggie looks the part. But it is not a question of looking the part. It is a question of doing what must be done. Can Maggie do what you and Elizabeth do?"
"No."
"And Victoria?"
"Yes, she can do it."
"Then I will return Victoria. You reverse the spell you put to make Quentin be in love with his wife. And then I will come collect Maggie."
"You will take her?"
"There is an experiment I want to make on the vital force, I was going to use Victoria, but I think that Maggie will make a better subject"
