He gazed out as the crew had formed on the bridge leading down back towards the CIC. The Normandy had just docked and he was ready to let them off the leash. But they needed reminding of a few basic rules, as always. "Okay, you've all done a great fucking job over the past few days and weeks. We've made inroads against Cerberus and also managed to halt one or two minor operations the Reapers had cooked up. We still have a long to go yet and our job has really only just begun. But although the war continues, every fighting man and woman needs a break, so that's why we're on the Citadel now. You all have forty-eight hours. Minimal crew, Commander Lawson has informed all crew of their details. I needn't remind you that I will not put up with crew members returning drunk if they are to be on station. Other than that you're free to do as you pleased, but I'd better not be receiving any messages from C-Sec. Understood?" Everyone nodded their head, so he took a step back. "Alright then, you lot. Get the hell out of here."
He watched as the crew filed past, everyone in a good mood, particularly those personnel who remained on the ship the entire time. Even in the 22nd century, navy men and women did occasionally suffer from cabin fever. It was why ships docked at regular intervals. Eventually those closest to him filed past.
"Any plans, Garrus?"
"Going to catch up with Chloe. I haven't seen her since… Well, it's been a while."
"Enjoy yourself."
"To be honest, I just want to get some sleep but I'm sure she'll have other plans."
Shepard couldn't help chuckle at the tone. "Good for you, Garrus. I'll expect you to be the last one back on the ship then eh? Perhaps hobbling a little bit?"
"Well, Chloe has proven to be rather… flexible at times."
Shepard cracked up and clapped the turian on the shoulder. "Get the hell out of here before this conversation descends any further."
"Don't wait up for me, Shepard."
He disappeared, quickly followed by Liara and Miranda. He had no idea they really even spoke to each other, but they were chatting quietly. He was going to ask what about, but all they did was smile at him as they strolled through the airlock, out onto the Citadel. "The hell are those two up to?" he wondered.
Javik approached alone, suggesting he would simply stroll the Citadel, as during his Reaper War, the Citadel had been the first objective conquered by the Reapers. "Try and get to the Wards," Shepard suggested, "They're a bit livelier. Expect some stares, maybe some awkward questions. No-one has seen a Prothean before."
"This should prove very interesting, Commander."
Yeah, that's one way of putting it. Please don't shoot anyone. While thinking that, he simply nodded as the Prothean wandered off.
Joker and EDI had departed already, knowing EDI posed as some sort of mobility assistant, so the last to approach were Vega, Jenkins, Cortez and, rather surprisingly, Traynor. Oh dear god, what is she doing? "Hey loco, going to join us for some drinks later?"
"I might join you much later, James, but unfortunately I still have work to do."
"Do you need any help, sir?" Traynor asked.
"No, you go out and enjoy yourself, Samantha. Just don't let these fools… well, one fool anyway, lead you astray."
"Loco, why do you have to say that? Traynor will be safe with us three around."
"There goes my chances of picking up," Traynor muttered, looking at Shepard with a sly grin, "But I could really do with a drink or two anyway."
"That's the spirit, Samantha!" Vega cried, and the four of them departed, Traynor looking back at him, half excited, half probably thinking The hell have I let myself in for following the Three Stooges around.
Shepard returned to his workstation and trawled through his 'to do' list. Speak to Reisman. Catch up with Alenko. Head to Spectre HQ and find out any news about, well, anything. Maybe there'll be news about the quarians? Looking around, the ship was practically empty save for the poor bastards who pulled the very first rotation. He made sure to stop and have a chat with them first, assuring them they would have time on the Citadel. They knew that already but were thankful the CO himself had come up to speak with them. It was something he'd always done.
Finally heading off the ship himself, he was used to be surrounded by his team, even on the Citadel, but with everything going on, he found peace in the solitude, even if it only lasted a few minutes. His first stop was Alliance HQ, walking through the doors, greeted cheerfully by the pair of receptionists, who didn't even stop to ask him why he was there. He was already a semi-permanent visitor as it was.
Reisman looked up and gestured for him to enter after he'd knocked, removing his hat and taking one of the spare chairs. He took a moment to look around the office, not surprised it was rather spartan. He figured Reisman had either arrived only recently or didn't care for decoration. He assumed the latter, if he was honest.
"Interesting reports you've sent in, Shepard. Knocked out a couple of Cerberus operations. Found a Prothean. Wouldn't mind meeting him, in all honesty. Now you have a salarian on board and a possible genophage cure?" Reisman looked up. "The salarians are going to freak out and the asari won't be pleased."
"Permission to speak freely, sir?"
Reisman briefly laughed, an usual sound to his ears. "Shepard, with me, speak your mind whenever you want."
He couldn't help smile. "Very good, sir. The salarians can go fuck themselves and the asari are going to pay for their hubris if they're not careful. Tevos completely fucked us over regarding the summit. The salarians are living in the past. What kind of galaxy are we living in where the fucking turians appear to be the most open-minded of species?"
"All valid points, Shepard. Hackett has passed word already. You have carte blanche to do whatever you think is best."
"Even a genophage cure?"
"Between you and me, Shepard, just getting the krogan on board could be one of the turning points of this war. It's early days yet, but the Reapers are pushing on all fronts. News from Earth is patchy at best, and whatever we do get doesn't make for good reading. The turians are being pummelled, the Reapers using their own tactics against them. Apparently the Terminus Systems is a complete mess, the Reapers having a field day as there is no organised resistance. The batarians were practically wiped out as the Reapers made their way to Earth."
"What about salarian and asari space?"
"No major moves yet, perhaps minor incursions. But it appears the Reapers will attempt to pick off one or two races at a time. Unfortunately, humanity and the turians were first in the firing line." Reisman placed down the datapad in his hand and picked up another one. "Okay, Shepard, Cerberus."
"What about them?" he asked, suddenly cautious.
Reisman picked up on that. "Don't worry about that, you've already given them enough of a bloody nose to erase any lingering doubts. What we want to know is what does the Illusive Man want?"
Shrugging, Shepard replied rather simply, "He wants to control them."
"He what?" Reisman asked flatly.
He just nodded. "When I spoke to him on Mars, he mentioned controlling the Reapers for 'our' own benefit. What he means is his benefit. He hates the Alliance and everything we stand for. Mutual co-operation, understanding and all that."
Reisman shook his head in disbelief. "He's a madman. A lunatic. Unhinged."
"He's obsessed with putting humanity on top over all the other species in the galaxy. And that's just the start of his ambitions. Besides the Reapers, trust me on this one, sir. I will be making every effort to stop him from achieving his goals. He pissed me off on Mars and he will get his comeuppance soon enough."
"The sooner, the better, but he obviously keeps himself well hidden. One piece of good news for you, Shepard, is there are now four wolfpacks operating around the galaxy. Though you are working independently in your role as Spectre, the four commanders of each squadron has been told that, if you are to request it, they will come and help. Hopefully you won't for every little thing but…"
"I'll only call if the situation is beyond dire, sir."
"Good, but remember that although they have their own missions, they can be called in at a moment's notice. If the situation is FUBAR, you have authorisation to call all four in at once. Hackett knows you will need help at times and wants to make sure you have friends in the right places. Their movements will be forwarded to your ship constantly so you know who to call if shit hits the fan."
"I'll put those in the galaxy map. EDI can help correlate possible movements at the same time."
"How long are you on the Citadel?"
"Forty-eight-hour R&R though that's for the crew. I'll be working most of it."
"Take a breather yourself, Shepard. We don't need you running yourself ragged just yet."
"I will, sir." He stood up, placing the cap on his head. "But my next port of call is to go see Alenko."
"Speaking of the Major, have you heard the news?"
"No?"
"Councillor Udina has offered him a role in the Spectres."
That made Shepard remove his cap and sit down again. "Seriously?"
"You disapprove?"
"No, no. Not at all. It's certainly nothing against him. It's just… Look, I know I was out of the loop for six months or so, but surely someone in the Alliance would have heard about this a long time ago. The only reason I became a Spectre so fast was because of Saren, otherwise I'd probably still be going through the process now." He paused before adding, "Just seems a little… convenient."
"You don't trust the councillor?" He met the eyes of the Major. "As I said, Shepard, speak your mind."
"Our last meeting was okay. He actually tried to be helpful. But you should know our past isn't great. And I've never really trusted the man. Alenko is a good man, a great soldier. But Spectre? I know I probably sound arrogant sitting here…"
"Don't worry, Shepard, some of us have had the same thoughts since we received the news. As you say, Alenko has the commendations in his CV, but even I can see… Well, it's Council business and we can't involve ourselves. If Udina wants Alenko in the Spectres, then he gets what he wants."
Swapping salutes as he stood up again, Shepard eventually wandered outside into the Presidium, striding along rather quickly as he wanted to speak to Alenko about a few things that were on his mind, and with news about his possible Spectre elevation fresh, he actually wanted to hear his opinion on the matter.
He had no idea how busy the hospital was before the war began, but it was full to bursting with plenty of civilians and soldiers requiring urgent treatment. Thankfully his uniform got him through the queue, considering he was only there to visit, informed that Alenko had been moved into a different wing now that he was in recovery. Winding his way through the crowd, then avoiding a number of nurses and doctors that barely looked up as they walked along, he finally arrived at the right room.
He knocked on the door before entering, coming to a stop as Alenko and his guest turned to look at him.
"Thane?"
His drell friend got his feet, bowing slightly, as he always did. "Shepard."
He walked forward, the pair clasping hands. "It's good to see you alive, old friend. I had been informed but had no idea you were here. Are you well?"
"As well as can be expected, Shepard. It is good to see you too."
"Good to see you, Shepard," Alenko added, swinging his feet off the bed before gingerly standing up, grasping his outstretched hand. Shepard grabbed a seat, gesturing for Alenko to relax, as he placed the chair next to Thane. "Glad you came by. Got something to tell you."
"Already know, Kaidan." He noticed the eyebrows rise though Alenko should not have been surprised. "Seriously, think word about something like that wouldn't reach me?"
"What do you think? Honestly?"
"I think you're a fantastic soldier. But…"
"I shouldn't be a Spectre?"
"As I told Reisman, not at all. I just think…" He sighed, knowing whatever he said wouldn't sound right. "Look, you know I don't really trust Udina. Guy is a slimy prick, and while I can see the benefits in you being elevated to a Spectre, there's just something… off about the whole thing."
"Glad I'm not the only one," he muttered, "I get injured on Mars, I'm in the middle of recovery, and now he wants me to be a Spectre. I mean, I'll take the offer, but… Something in the back of my mind is telling me that Udina is up to something, and I'll be caught in the middle."
"How long until you're out of here?"
"Because of the significant head trauma, they've told me it will still be a little while. Would like to get back on the ship but they won't sign any release forms until they're assured I'm fine."
"If you do return, you'll see a few changes among personnel. Want to know about it?" Alenko nodded. "Okay, first thing is Liara is now back on the Normandy in her role as Shadow Broker. She's doing what she can to assist the war effort. Second thing is… Remember Miranda?"
"Yeah, she was one of those Cerberus operatives, right?"
"True, but she left them when I told Timbo to go fuck himself. She's now on the Normandy as my XO."
Alenko glanced away, towards, Thane, before looking back at Shepard. "Seriously?" Shepard nodded. "Okay, I'll bite. How? Why? Who? When?"
"Okay. Short version is this. Miranda has been on the run for over six months after telling Timbo to go and do one when I did the same thing. I got in contact with her a few days ago while I was here on the Citadel. Spoke to Admiral Hackett, requested I add her as part of my crew. He said I could use emergency protocols to induct her into the Alliance. Seeing as I didn't have an XO, I made her mine, as she served the same role before anyway."
"I know you trust her, Shepard. It's your decision in the end. I was hoping to return though."
"You still have a place on my ship, Kaidan."
"Outranking you is awkward though, isn't it?"
"I won't let it bother me if you don't. We're professionals, Kaidan."
"Well, let's see how this whole Spectre thing shakes out. Maybe I'll get my own ship too?" Shepard met his eyes and noticed the smirk. Both men chuckled, any tension that might have existed immediately evaporating. "One thing, Shepard. About Mars…"
Shepard waved a hand. "Don't worry about it."
"But…"
"Kaidan, seriously. I'd ask questions too. Remember, I still look in the mirror every day, knowing some of the shit I've done to make sure the job is completed, sometimes at the cost of lives, material, and the stain that goes on my conscience because of it. And I know people will always judge me for it."
"Felt like Horizon all over again."
"Yeah, at least we didn't break into fisticuffs this time. Look, Kaidan, it's fine. I'm just glad you're alive and on the mend. That's the most important thing. Once you're out of there, as I said before, we'll sit down, really delve into everything that happened. Then hopefully we can leave it all in the past where it belongs."
Kaidan smiled. "I'd like that, Shepard. And thanks. Thought you would have preferred to just smack me around a bit."
He smirked. "Oh, the thought briefly crossed my mind." Both men looked at each other again before chuckling. At least they could laugh about it at least. Before anything else could be said, a nurse popped her head through the door, telling Alenko that he needed to go to rehab. Thane suggested the pair head back out into the waiting room so they could converse.
Managing to find a quiet waiting room, Thane sat down, Shepard grabbing both of them a drink, before he joined him. The large windows allowed a fantastic view of the Presidium, and as Shepard sipped his drink, he glanced at Thane and believed the drell was… at peace.
"How long do you have?" he wondered, asking the question that had been on his mind since reading he was alive.
"Every day is a bonus, Shepard. So I will spend those with my son."
"How's he doing?"
"He's at peace with what happened before and what is to come."
"Is there anything I can do to help?"
"You have helped me more than enough, Shepard. But perhaps you could visit the Citadel once or twice more before the end. We can carry on our discussions about our roles in the universe and what the gods have planned for us all."
"Of course. You don't even have to ask."
"And you? I am surprised not to see a certain quarian with you."
"She is back with the Fleet at the moment. It's a long story but we'll be back together soon."
"Surprising to hear, Shepard. I thought…" He trailed off. "It does not matter. What matters is the here and now. I no longer bother thinking about the past. Though my conscience is not clear, my soul is still stained by past misdeeds, I believe I have spread light with the good deeds I have done. And there is little point in thinking of the future, as it is possible that, one day soon, I will not wake. Therefore, I live day by day, taking time to simply marvel at the creation of life."
"Sure you don't want to rejoin the ship?"
Thane laughed for a moment before he started to cough, Shepard gently patting his back as Thane gestured he was okay. "I do not mean to laugh at your offer, Shepard. But the past six months have been… taxing on my body. Taking down the Collectors was my last great act. Within a couple of months of you handing yourself in, I could feel my body start to fail rapidly. To be honest, Shepard, I was lucky to make it through that mission in one piece."
"I had no idea. You seemed fine the entire time."
"I won't say it was an illusion, but… I pushed myself hard and perhaps it is now… What do you say? Coming back to bite me in the arse?" Shepard burst into laughter at Thane using such an expression. The drell simply smiled. "That is one sound I remember from our time, Shepard. Despite the situation, the seriousness of what we were involved in, there was always plenty of laughter."
"I'll return as often as I can, Thane."
"While I appreciate the sentiment, you also have a war to win, Shepard. What I want most is a galaxy that my son can thrive in."
"And I'll do whatever it takes to make sure that happens."
Garrus had been told by Shepard that Chloe now worked at the hospital, so made sure that was his first place to visit. Told that she was off duty, he headed out and straight to her apartment. Knocking on her door, he loved the look of surprise on her face when it opened, stepping forward to hug her as she did the same thing, though took it a step further by leaping into his arms, crossing her legs around him at the same time. "You're alive!" she whispered.
"Takes more than a couple of Reapers to get the best of me," he said, carrying her into the living room. He could smell food cooking so placed her down so she could at least deal with that, before she returned to sit next to him on the couch.
"I've been so worried, Garrus. Guess I owe Shepard a favour now."
"Shepard?"
"When he was here last time, I said we hadn't really spoken in a while because of your work. I knew you were on Palaven at least, then when the news broke…"
"Sorry if I worried you. But we were on a complete news blackout. And I was just so busy…"
She grabbed his hand. "Garrus, it's fine. We've had times like this, when you disappear. At least, this time, I knew you'd be gone for some time because of the work."
"Sometimes you are far too understanding that I simply don't know how you put up with me."
Running a hand around the back of his head, she moved his head down to hers so their foreheads touched. They'd learned over time that they couldn't really kiss. It was just… too awkward. Chloe could kiss him, but only on the cheek, while Garrus… Well, he suggested the whole forehead thing. In their culture, it was a sign of love, respect, devotion. Chloe loved the idea and they'd been doing it ever since.
"How long are you here for?" she asked quietly.
"Got a forty-eight-hour pass from Shepard. Poor bastard probably won't relax but I couldn't not come see you."
"So I have you for two days?"
"Well, yeah. Do you have to work?"
"I do but when I'm not at the hospital, I'll definitely be here with you."
"When do you need to be back?"
"Early tomorrow morning. I was just making some dinner then… I don't have any dextro food, as I didn't know…"
"How about dinner out, a drink or two, then we come back here?"
"Or we can just order in, eat then do what we both really want to do, Garrus. You don't have to wine and dine me constantly." She raised a hand to his cheek, caressing it softly. "Garrus, I'm a sure thing. I love you."
He could only lean forward and touch her forehead again. "I thought about you all the time," he confessed quietly, "A very, very large part of me didn't want you to leave Palaven."
Now she did kiss his cheek. "And I didn't want to leave, but I knew the job you were doing was important. I've always understood, Garrus. I remember the day you walked back into my office after being gone for two years. I should have…" She stopped. "No, no point thinking about that now. No regrets, Garrus. I'm in this for the long haul."
"Sounds serious. How long?"
"I'm thinking another sixty or so years."
"So… Very serious."
"I'm thinking we can eat later, Garrus. Do you like the sound of that?"
He nearly chuckled at the insinuation that dripped from her tone, and took great delight when she undid a couple of buttons on her shirt, giving him just a hint of that delightful cleavage she had. Truth be told, it had been a long time since they'd been intimate, so he wasn't going to turn down the clear invitation. Rising to his feet, he gently grabbed her by the hand and led her towards the bedroom. Once out of his armour, he always wondered what she found attractive in him. Humans tended to be like the asari, soft and squishy. Garrus was all hard bones and edges, but he would admit that he loved holding her when they were both naked, appreciating the softness of her body.
They wore each other out over the next couple of hours, both lying back later, the bedsheets now a complete mess, her clothing all over the room in his haste to undress her, Chloe covered in a slight sheen of sweat, Garrus simply trying to catch his breath after quite the exertion. "Okay, I'm sure sex with you is more of an aerobic workout than anything I do out there," he joked.
She just cuddled into his side, flinging an arm over his chest. "No complaints from me either way, Garrus."
Lying in silence, he eventually asked, "Are you serious about the whole, you know, lifelong thing?"
"Of course, Garrus. I would never joke about something like that."
"Where do you want to live? Palaven is out as it would be far too uncomfortable of you. I could live on Earth but the food issue would be a pain."
"Move in with me here. My apartment becomes our apartment."
"That simple?"
"Life doesn't have to be complicated, Garrus. And our relationship will hopefully be simpler once all this Reaper business is dealt with. I can continue being a doctor while you can… Well, what would you like to do once all this is over?"
"I haven't really given it a thought, to be honest. I'm more concerned with making sure we actually win."
"Well, if you crave a bit of peace and quiet, you can just be my house husband."
"Husband?"
She looked up, a mischievous look in her eyes. "Of course, Garrus. I would expect a wedding and a ring on my finger at some stage." He'd thought about it, of course, but they'd never actually spoken about it. "Once again, after all this is over though. Don't want a shotgun wedding when you're about to fly off into battle. I would like it done right if possible."
"And here I thought you were just using me for my body."
That made her giggle as she eventually got up and straddled him, doing something that caused her to gasp and him to groan. "Oh, I'm doing that too, Garrus," she whispered, her body starting to move in a particular way they both enjoyed, "But I like to think about our future as well."
He couldn't help chuckle as he ran a talon gently up and down her body. "Looks like I might have some plans to make."
She leaned down, resting her forehead against his. "No rush, Garrus. And please don't feel pressured. We're just talking and perhaps finally being completely honest about what we want from each other. All that matters is that I love you, I know you love me, and once all this is over, perhaps we can finally be together without the galaxy falling apart and you needing to run off and help save it."
They needed to have a nap a little later, Chloe moulding her body into his. She'd been on her feet for half the night and morning, so she was now fast asleep, Garrus holding her gently, surprised even after all this time that she would feel comfortable resting against him. He went over the conversations they'd just had and was surprised that the talk of marriage didn't scare him as much as it may have done two or so years ago. Looking at it, he now had something worth fighting for. He didn't want to die. He wanted to live, win, then return to her, and grow old together. And living for the next sixty years as husband and wife didn't sound like a bad deal at all.
Guess I'll have to go ring shopping soon enough. Wonder who I could take with me?
"Looks like we might have some company soon," Miranda stated, gesturing to the entrance where Vega and his small group were walking in.
"No, I don't think so," Liara replied, "I think he might be a little… fearful of me, particularly after what happened on Grissom."
"Oh… Do tell?" she asked, smirking over the lip of her glass.
"He may have received a glimpse of my biotic power. Add to that, I was perhaps a little pissed off about Cerberus trying to hurt a bunch of kids. The only person more pissed off was you know who." Miranda couldn't help grimace. "I'm not surprised you're back by his side though."
"What makes you say that?" she wondered.
"Because you were one of the first people he asked about once he had his mission. I knew you were friendlier than when you first met but I had no idea…"
She placed the glass down. "Liara, the man said he would fight and die for me. I know of only a couple of other people he said that too. My place is by his side until the end of this war."
"Sounds like it might be something else. Is it?"
She couldn't help smirk. "Same thing could be said about you, Miss T'Soni."
The asari blushed. "That was a long time ago now, Miranda. Yes, I was attracted to him but it was obvious rather early who he was interested in. Shepard is my friend, as is Tali, but he will need the help of us all to get through this. Still makes me wonder about you though."
"I don't love him, if that's what you're getting at. There would be no point allowing myself that as it will be forever unrequited. But he is my friend, probably my best friend, to be honest. The only person I was closer to was…" She trailed off and sighed.
"Jack?" She nodded. "I must ask; why did you break up? I was left believing you were good for her."
"I probably was but she was the one who made the decision. She was moving on with her life and…" She shrugged. "I probably wasn't the right person to be with at the time anyway. My life was a mess once I told the Illusive Man to cram it. Going on the run didn't help our relationship either."
"If only Shepard…"
"Yeah, if only Shepard… Though he had to do it. If he'd gone on the run himself, I think they'd have hunted him down, just like they did with Saren. We all believed what he did was the right thing, it gave us time. Still don't know how he lives with it though."
"Again, without Tali for the moment, we're his 'support group'. While we're relaxing here, he's no doubt still hard at work."
"What about you? How do you cope with everything?"
She watched the asari sit back and contemplate an answer. She'd probably never really been asked by anyone except Shepard, who seemed to carry not only his own worries but everyone else's on his very broad shoulders. And now he has the entire galaxy to think about. Definitely needs our support now. "Well, for one thing, I definitely got lax if Cerberus managed to find me."
"Ah, I've heard rumours about that. Something about an enormous collision?"
Liara smirked though it turned into a smile. "The sort of fireball Shepard would have been proud of. But it was a distraction to allow Feron and I to escape. He's now working for me around the galaxy, forever in the shadows."
"Little birdie told me…"
Liara shook her head. "No, Miranda. That was a simple case of we were the only two people on the ship and it was a way of letting off steam. Yes, it was enjoyable but we agreed that it would only be physical." She took a sip of her drink before continuing. "Besides, I'm far too busy to even start thinking about something like that. Considering I'm on the ship most of the time, and if not on the ship, no doubt neck deep in Reaper monsters or other monstrosities, I think any thoughts of my personal life will be on hold until all this is over."
Miranda lifted her glass. "I'll drink to that, T'Soni."
The asari smiled as they clinked glasses. "No doubt he was wondering what we were up to though…"
"What, as we walked off?" Liara nodded. "Well, we will be working together for the foreseeable future, Liara, so might as well get to know each other. I mean, you did steal my office after all."
"That was…"
She couldn't help chuckle. "Don't worry, I don't mind my new office. Already have it just how I like it. Plus, it's more convenient for Shepard being close by."
"What's it like working for the Alliance?"
"It's different. It's like being at a new school when you're a kid." She paused before adding, "I know Shepard doesn't, but I'm sure someone is keeping an eye on me."
"I'd know about it if someone was, Miranda. Trust me, you're in that uniform now. You have his trust, and you have ours. All you need do is keep supporting him and the others, and it'll be fine."
"What about you? Has he made a big deal about not going through the Omega Four?"
"You know Shepard wouldn't say anything even if he was put out by it. No, welcomed straight back as if the last two to three years simply didn't happen. He's far more magnanimous than given credit for."
Miranda drank the rest of her glass, gesturing to the nearby waiter for two more. "Right, that's enough shop talk, Liara. We're both single, crew of one of the best ships in the galaxy, and we still have around forty hours of R&R to go, so I think we let loose and have some fun."
"Oh, what sort of fun?"
"I'm thinking some fruity alcoholic drinks and pumping tunes. Maybe a dance. Haven't danced in months!"
Liara quickly finished her drink. "One more here then we'll head out?"
"Want that lot to join in?" she asked, gesturing at Vega and the others nearby.
"Well, I would ask if Samantha wanted to join us, but if we ask her, the rest will want to tag along."
"Could have worse company, in all honesty."
Liara nodded. "Okay, one more, then we'll see if they're interested. As long as we're not left with stonking great hangovers when we return to the ship."
"Well, let's just how things go, shall we?"
Jack would never admit to anyone why she was so… mellow compared to how she used to be. As soon as she'd shown up on Grissom, she was angry at the world once again. Shepard hadn't lied, but his stupid arse blew up a system and he needed to leave. Miranda also had to leave her, the entire team split apart, and she was left alone again. The one decent thing Shepard had done before he pissed off was try and help her.
She was never sure if it was a good thing that Kahlee had read her like a book from the first moment they met. She still carried a burning fire inside her that rarely cooled. There were the fleeting moments of peace with Miranda, the occasional chat with Shepard, perhaps a quiet word with someone like Thane. But, deep down, she was still angry, pissed off… and scared.
Dabbling in drugs had been a past time. If she'd actually been convicted of all the crimes she'd actually committed, her time in Purgatory would never have ended. She'd been clean from the moment she stepped foot on the Normandy. Chakwas had obviously asked her history and she'd been completely honest. Shepard had never suggested any sort of testing, instead simply trusting her to behave.
To help suppress some of the rage, particularly around the kids, Kahlee suggested just a little something entirely legal to help her relax. Something that wouldn't inhibit her talents, but would take away some of the hate she still felt for everything. Jack had been hesitant at first, Kahlee gently probing her until she finally relented and at least agreed to try it.
She hated to admit that a simple tablet, once a day, made her feel better. The memories of her life didn't disappear. She still remembered every single thing inflicted on her. But whatever the cocktail was in the tablet, it made her feel… better. Sure, she could still fling a shockwave that would send a bunch of idiots flying, and she'd still find enjoyment in destroying any idiot dumb enough to wear the Cerberus symbol, but when surrounded by her kids, she felt… normal. At least what she thought was normal anyway. Many of the dark thoughts that once swirled around her mind finally went quiet.
Having to evacuate Grissom meant she wasn't the only one to leave everything behind. Now that she was technically part of the Alliance, they had given her some clothes to wear at least, but she'd found going off her meds actually made her feel like shit. So she got into contact with Kahlee, who suggested she simply go to the nearest clinic or hospital, and Kahlee would send her the right information so she could get what she wanted.
So that's how she ended up standing in line with various civilians and soldiers, waiting for her meds. She still didn't particularly like large crowds but at least no-one was trying to kill her, and though she was always wary about Cerberus, no-one looked particularly threatening. In fact, most people looked too sick, injured or just plain exhausted to do anything.
"Jack, right?"
She whipped her head around so fast, the man who'd asked took a step back, whether in surprise or fright, she couldn't quite tell. She looked him up and down fairly quickly. Dressed in a shirt and slacks, but carried an air about him that gave her a moment of pause. "I know you?" she finally asked, as pleasantly as possible.
"Name's Kaidan. I'm sure I met you briefly once before. Hard to forget a woman with so much body art."
That made her smirk. "Body art? They're tats, Kaidan. And where did you meet me briefly?"
"Feros. You were with Shepard and his crew."
"Should have known you would know the Commander Boy Scout. Kaidan, right?" He nodded. She looked him up and down again. "What the hell happened to you?"
"Well, a Cerberus AI didn't take kindly to Shepard and I interfering in its plans, and I ended up here."
"Fucking Cerberus," she muttered, noticing she was getting closer to the front.
"What are you here for? Meds?"
She cast him with another glance. "Yeah, sure. Why you asking?"
"I get terrible migraines sometimes. Comes with being biotic. Figured you were one too. You don't look like anyone else in the line so it was a process of elimination."
"Yes, I'm here for some meds. No, it's not for migraines. It's for…" She paused. "Yeah, little too personal that."
He held up one of his hands. "Sure, sure. No offence meant. I was just sitting over there and thought I recognised you, so was just wondering what brought you here. Haven't seen many Normandy people come in."
"I'm not on the Normandy. Already done one suicide mission. That's enough for me."
"Oh, so you're on the Citadel because…?"
She met his eyes and couldn't help the smirk. "Sure are asking a lot of questions. Not sure I like nosy people." She finally reached the front of the line and was handed what seemed to be at least a month's worth of pills. Thanking the lady, she turned with her small bag, feeling Kaidan follow in her footsteps. "If you're wondering, I'm based on the Citadel for a couple of reasons. One, my kids are still busy training, so this is probably the best place for them. Two, aside from training, I still don't mind getting involved in the occasional fight. I'll let Shepard deal with the big shit." She stopped and turned towards him. "What do you want?"
"Nothing. Just… Well, you were familiar and, quite frankly, looked like someone I could talk to. Didn't think you'd remember me but, as I said, can't forget something like… you."
She met his eyes again before chuckling. "Barking up the wrong tree, Kaidan. And not because I don't like dudes. Just…"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm just being friendly, Jack. Being stuck in here for so long isn't a whole lot of fun. And a little lonely."
"Not got a girlfriend or…" His face fell immediately so she didn't ask the remainder of the question.
"We split up. It wasn't working. There was a lot of history involved, but… Well, it doesn't matter. What does is that we parted amicably and we're still friends, at least." He cleared his throat. "Want to join me for a coffee? Just as someone to talk to. Maybe share an interesting story or two. Always good talking to a fellow biotic."
She glanced around, wondering if it wasn't some sort of elaborate joke. "You serious?"
Kaidan shrugged. "As I said, I'm stuck here for the time being and wouldn't mind some company. If you're busy, then fair…"
"No, I'm not busy."
"Well, then the invitation stands." He lowered his voice as adding, "The coffee here sucks but I'm not exactly allowed out of here yet."
Jack would admit, she was intrigued by this guy having the guts to simply start talking to her. She'd freely admit that most people were scared off by her 'body art' first before even attempting a conversation. And he seemed sincere enough. Maybe he was just looking for a little bit of company and conversation. To be honest, looking him up and down, she could certainly do a whole lot worse.
"Sure, I'll join you for some shit coffee. Can't be worse than some of the crap I've been drinking lately."
Ending up in a nearby room, there was a coffee machine dispensing some liquid brown. She drank it black with only a sugar, noticing Kaidan went for sugar and milk. Sitting by one of the enormous windows overlooking the Presidium, you would never have guessed a war of annihilation was going on elsewhere. You could even write off those sick and injures in the reception areas as a minor inconvenience.
"So what's the real reason you didn't join up with Shepard?" Kaidan finally asked, looking down to see she'd drunk most of her cup.
"My kids," she admitted, "I think they're all gifted as fuck but… They still need me to give them the occasional kick up the arse."
"Will they be at the front?"
That question made her smile. "No. Shepard made sure they would be behind the lines. Defence and support only. I should have thanked him a whole lot more for that. I think he did it for me."
"That sounds just like Shepard."
"You know him well?"
"I did." He paused a moment. "I still do. It's… It's tricky. The whole Cerberus thing."
"Don't like them either?"
"Some of the things we discovered while chasing Saren…" He trailed off and shook his head.
"I'm a product of them. Why I am like I am." She paused, thinking Why the fuck am I telling him this? "I see the Cerberus logo, and whoever is wearing it will be destroyed."
"What did they do?"
She finished her cup. "That's a topic for another time, soldier boy." Placing down the cup, she stood up. "Well, I guess the conversation could have been a whole lot awkward and worse."
Kaidan got to his feet as well. "Thanks for the company."
"Yeah, I'm sure it was riveting for you."
The easy smile surprised her. "I've had worse." He said it in such a tone, she couldn't help the small smile that formed. "If you want, you can return for some more riveting conversation again…"
"Seriously?"
"Sure. I'll be here for a while then… I'm not sure, to be honest. Things have changed recently so I don't know what my future holds."
She thought for a few moments. "I don't make promises like a certain someone, but I'll tell you what. I'm in the area again, I might just drop by for some absolutely awful coffee. Might even share a story or two about Cerberus, how Shepard and I fucked them up."
"I'm sure I'll listen with bated breath, Jack."
She met his eyes and smirked. "Yeah, I'm sure you will. Anyway, I'm going to head. Catch you later."
"See you soon, Jack."
Walking away, she couldn't help the lone glance back as she felt the crowds around her part. He just stood there, gazing in her direction, though his face was rather blank. She returned her gaze forward, still feeling his eyes on her back. For once, she didn't feel unnerved by it. In fact, despite trying desperately not to, the flicker of a smile start to pinch at her lips before she forced it away.
"They've been here how long?" Shepard asked.
"Around a month after you handed yourself in, sir," the Staff Sergeant replied.
"For what reason?"
"Alliance could never decide what to do with them. The only reason they're here and not dead with the other poor bastards on Arcturus is that Reisman wanted them here in preparation for a worst case scenario, which is basically what we have now."
"Very well. I'm invoking Spectre authorisation, Sergeant. I want these two released into my custody. Considering they were working for me against the Collectors, if I'm now back on the Normandy, then my two engineers should be as well."
"Very well, Commander. You'll just have to fill out a couple of forms while I grab them for you."
"Thank you, Sergeant."
Filling in paperwork seemed to be half his life at the moment, or at least whenever he returned to the Citadel. But after visiting the Spectre office and reading through the mountain of information, that was certainly one message that caught him by surprise, and he quickly headed back to Alliance HQ to make sure they were back on his ship pronto.
Paperwork filled in, he sat back and waited, the two engineers arriving a few minutes later. Rising to his feet, they both stopped and saluted, the grins on their faces suggesting they were rather happy to see him.
"Good to see you, sir," Donnelly stated.
"Aye, it's been a long few months," Daniels added.
He stepped forward to shake their hands. "Sorry you guys have been locked up so long."
"Not a problem, sir. We figured they'd either charge or release us eventually," Donnelly replied.
"Are we heading back to the Normandy, sir?" Daniels asked.
"Absolutely. First thing first. We get you out of what you're wearing and back into Alliance colours. We head to the Normandy, get you reacclimatised. You'll be working for Lieutenant and Chief Engineer Gregory Adams."
"We know the name, sir. Good man," Daniels stated.
"Sergeant, any chance we can get my engineers some uniforms to wear for now?"
"Already ordered and on their way, sir."
The three took a seat as they waited. "How are things out there, sir?" Donnelly wondered.
"Honestly, not great. Earth is under attack and the turians are copping a hiding as well. Terminus Systems are a mess. Minor incursions on Tuchanka. Asari and salarians not in play yet."
"We'd heard rumours but we've been out of the loop most of the time. Survived on rumours," Daniels admitted.
"Aye, plenty about you, Shepard. All sorts of crazy stories. Glad to see they were all bullshit," Donnelly added.
"I'd ask what sort of crazy stories, but I'm actually worried about what you were told."
"Mostly just what happened after you handed yourself in and what the Alliance were preparing to do. But I guess being back in Alliance colours is the best thing, right?"
"Right you are, Daniels." He looked up as a private entered with a box. "And here are your clothes. Have a wash first, then get dressed and I'll meet you in reception. We've got a little time to grab other things later, but I'm thinking a visit of the ship is what you'd want first, right?"
"Aye, sir," the pair replied in unison.
The pair appeared around twenty minutes later. It was amazing how much a quick wash and a new uniform can help the appearance. He led the way out of the offices, noticing the pair glance around as it was perhaps the first time they'd seen anything except four walls in quite some time. Leading them towards the docks, he heard mention of the fact they were not heading to same as before, and both stopped when they saw the colours the Normandy now flew.
Leading them in and eventually downstairs, Adams wasn't supposed to be on shift but he was there as always, Shepard introducing the two engineers to him. Adams knew them by name and reputation, salutes and handshakes all around, before Shepard informed Adams that Donnelly and Daniels would be rejoining the Normandy. He thought that was a great idea, knowing the work they'd done on the ship while working with Cerberus.
"Carry on, Adams. You two with me for now," he said, leading them back up to the mess, where the three took a seat. "So I'm assuming you've probably been cooped up for quite some time. Therefore, there is still…" He glanced at the time on his omni-tool. "Twelve hours of R&R. So if you want, you can head out, grab a nice meal, perhaps a drink or two, or if you want, find a hotel and just enjoy a soft bed for a few hours. Just be back on time, ready to depart."
"Aye, sir. Wouldn't mind wetting my whistle, to be honest," Donnelly stated.
Daniels scoffed. "I wouldn't mind the soft bed thing myself."
"Drink then sleep it is!"
Leaving the two engineers to get on with what they wanted, considering he had at least a little spare time now, having checked off the last job he needed to do, he headed out by himself into the Wards. EDI reported in when the crew came and went, and most had returned for some shut eye before leaving. From what she said, everyone seemed in good spirits and thankful for a little time away from the ship. Even in wartime, fighting men and women needed a break, otherwise they'd be worn down, worn out, and that's when mistakes happen.
He was wandering towards one of his old favourite haunts on Zakera Ward when he stopped, sensing a familiar presence around hm. Turning to one of the advertising boards, he simply looked up past it. "Hello," he said.
He only had to wait a few seconds before Kasumi deactivated her cloak. "How the hell do you do that, Shepard?!"
Feeling the smile tug at his lips, he wasn't surprised by her graceful leap over the edge of the walkway, a small flip as she landed on her feet nearby, before she walked towards him. The hug was immediate, having not seen each other in months. "Good to see you, Kasumi."
"You too, Shep," she replied quietly before leaning back, "Where's Tali? I would have thought…"
"Long story. I'm about to head off for a drink. Want to join me?"
"You going to offer me a job again?"
"If you're interested… I'll be honest, I can do with all the help I can get right now."
"I'll take that drink first and we'll see."
Walking through the Wards, diverting away from the pub he was going to hit, instead heading for somewhere that sold coffee instead, he bought himself a hot cup of brown, Kasumi a tea, and that sat back in silence, enjoying the warmth of their drink. Despite the chaos of the Wards, you could still find moments of peace and quiet.
"So, the wife, Shep? Where is she?"
"Back with the Fleet. Long story short, they asked her to come back. I wasn't particularly happy about it, but knew I couldn't stop her, so I tried to be as understanding as possible."
"How long ago was that?"
"A couple of weeks before the Reapers arrived."
"Any idea where the Migrant Fleet is?" He shook his head. "Damn, wonder how she's doing…"
"I'm sure she's just fine. Did you hear from her much while she was with me on Earth?"
"Yeah, we'd message each other nearly every day. I wasn't up to much myself, to be honest. After surviving a suicide mission, you tend just to enjoy each day as if it's a gift. As for now, I'm helping out where I can, making sure certain products reach the refugees that are flooding in from around the galaxy." She met his eyes, no doubt seeing the hint of a smile on his face. "Thievery may or may not be involved."
"I'd expect nothing less, Miss Goto."
"You serious about me joining up again?"
"I'm surrounding myself with some familiar faces and good friends while the galaxy goes to shit. And you were one of my team taking on the Collectors. I know what you're good at. Plus, I know I'll see Tali again soon. Got a sixth sense about these things. She's going to need a friend or two as well."
That made her laugh. "Shepard, she'll be so wrapped up in being back with you, none of us will stand a chance."
"Possibly."
"Possibly, he says. Like you weren't joined at the hip before."
"Well, she is my wife and all, so there is that."
"Anyone I know back on the ship?"
"Garrus is with me at the moment. Miranda is back."
Even he noticed the surprise despite half her face being hidden by the hood. "Really?"
"Of course. Jenkins is there too. Mordin is currently on board, rescued him from Sur'Kesh. Not sure if you met Urdnot Wrex, he's on board at the moment as well. Big things going on right now. Would be a shame if you missed it."
Kasumi looked away from him, obviously deep in thought. He just drank his coffee quietly, hoping he'd managed to convince her. This time, there was no promise of any personal help to get her on board. This time, he was simply asking for help as he knew he would need all the help he could get to ensure victory.
Placing the mug down, she released a sigh. "Damn it, Shepard. I was getting nice and comfortable on the Citadel."
He couldn't help the grin that formed. "That's a yes, I take it?"
"Yes, Shepard. I shouldn't join up again as you'll no doubt have us doing all sorts of crazy stuff, but I'd shoot myself if I sat on the sidelines and missed out on some of your adventures. Plus, if I'm with you, I'll see Tali again soon enough. We can get up to all sorts of mischief again."
"Excellent. Thank you, Kasumi."
"Well, if I'm joining up again, I guess I'd better see what state the Normandy is in. You recruiting me into the Alliance for this or…"
"Want a blue uniform?"
"Can I get one with a hood?"
He couldn't help chuckle. "You know, I'm sure we can get something arranged. Come on, we'll head back and get you sorted. You can even take your old position in the lounge, if you want."
"Now that sounds like a deal, Shepard."
A/N – Someone mentioned putting Kasumi back on the Normandy. So I did.
