Chapter Fourteen

Cedes froze, her sneakers squishing in the mud just outside the cabin that had haunted her nightmares for over a decade. She raised the butcher knife that she'd grabbed from Sam's kitchen and turned in a full circle. Was that a gunshot she'd heard? Or had the lightning hit one of the trees close by?

Rain pelted her from above, no longer blowing in stinging sheets. The storm was easing, but she was still soaked and cringing every time lightning flashed across the sky. She started forward again, using the flashlight she'd discovered in a kitchen drawer. Too bad Sam hadn't had a gun in the kitchen drawer, too. She could have searched his house for one. But she'd been too worried the rain would obliterate his trail and she wouldn't be able to find him if she waited any longer.

Twenty minutes later, her pathetic tracking skills that she'd learned as a Girl Scout too many years ago to count had brought her to this cabin. She shined the flashlight all around, hoping to see some sign of Sam. She'd called his name over and over when she'd first started looking for him. But her voice was so hoarse now she didn't think she could scream if her life depended on it.

After testing the cabin's doorknob and finding it unlocked, she pushed it open, shining the light inside and holding her knife at the ready. But the one-room structure was obviously empty, and drenched and dirty from rain pelting through a hole in the roof. She whirled around and headed back to where she'd last seen a shoe print in the mud. Rain had already filled the print and was distorting its edges. She ran the light along the ground, weaving back and forth, searching for the next print. Nothing. Rain was running along the ground like a stream past the cabin, obliterating everything in its path.

She ran behind the cabin, shining her light all around. And then she saw it—another shoe print, heading toward the woods. Was it Sam's? It seemed large enough to be but it was hard to tell. Not seeing any other prints nearby, and completely out of options, she started toward the trees.

Sam slammed his fist against Blaine's jaw. Blaine grunted in pain and rolled to the side. Sam scrambled across the hardwood floor, reaching for the rifle that he'd knocked out of Blaine's hand earlier. Fingers circled around his ankle and yanked him backward.

He kicked his legs, slamming his boot into the side of Blaine's shoulder. Blaine let out a howl of pain and immediately let him go.

Sam pushed himself up on his hands and knees and lunged for the rifle. He grabbed it, twisting around and bringing it up toward Blaine.

Except that Blaine was gone.

The sound of boots clomping across the porch outside the open French door had Sam shoving to his feet and racing for the opening.

Cedes had lost the trail twenty feet from the cabin. But then she'd spotted a new trail, a recent trail. The pounding rain had distorted the prints so badly she could barely tell they were made by a human. But since any humans out in this storm had to either be Sam or someone who could hopefully lead her to Sam, she took off in pursuit. Jogging, head down, flashlight pointed at the ground so she wouldn't miss any of the rapidly disappearing prints, she hurried up an incline, faster and faster.

Wait. Incline? Weren't there cliffs around this area? She lifted her head and sucked in a breath at the black maw opening just ahead. She scrambled to stop her forward momentum, dropping to her knees in the mud at the cliff's edge. The knife flew out of her hands and disappeared over the side. Her feet slid in the muck, her momentum continuing to carry her toward the drop-off.

"Cedes!"

She glanced over her shoulder to see Sam running toward her. Her heart soared with relief that he was okay even as it swelled with panic as she slid toward the edge.

"Sam!" She clawed desperately at the squishy ground.

He dived like a baseball player trying to steal first base, his hands outstretched. Her fingertips brushed against his, and then she fell into open air.

"Cedes, NO!" Sam yelled her name, horrified, as her frightened face disappeared over the cliff. He shoved to his knees, trying to find purchase in the slick mud. Digging his fingers around some tree roots embedded in the mire, he pulled himself just over the drop-off and looked down. "Cedes? Cedes?"

"I'm here."

Her voice sounded impossibly hoarse, but it was definitely her. He inched another half foot forward, and then he saw her, clinging to the side of the hill, the fingers of her left hand wrapped around tree roots protruding from the slick dirt.

"Hang on," he called down. "Don't let go."

"I'm slipping."

"Try to find a better handhold. There are roots all over the place. You might have to dig."

She punched at the dirt with her right hand. "I've got another root!"

"Good. Hold on. I'm coming to get you." How, he had no idea. But going over the edge wasn't an option. He'd pull the whole slick hillside down on top of both of them. He needed to go back down the hill and come up from beneath her, below the cliff face.

He half slid, half ran down the hill to circle around beneath the cliff. A shadow moved off to his right. He jerked his head around just as Blaine Anderson slammed into him from the cover of trees.

Cedes's left foot slid off her foothold and cartwheeled her sideways. She let out a squeal of alarm and scrabbled for a new foothold. The root she was holding in her right hand started to move. It was pulling loose. Where was Sam?

A muffled grunt was her answer. The sound of cursing, a shout. Sam was in trouble. Whoever was after him must have found him again. What in the world was happening?

"Mercedes, look up."

She did, and was shocked to see Rachel Berry's face pale in the moonlight, looking over the edge at her. Cedes was even more surprised to see a rope being lowered. The rope stopped at her waist. All she had to do was grab it. In theory. But this was Rachel, the same woman who'd hated Cedes all her life. The same woman who'd shot a bullet through her car window just a few days ago.

"Grab it," Rachel yelled. "What are you, stupid? You're going to fall."

The root suddenly pulled free, and Cedes automatically grabbed for the rope. To her relief, it held. She looked up at Rachel, who had both hands wrapped around the rope above.

"It's tied around a big sturdy tree.," she said. "It's a lot bigger than you, and stronger. But you're still going to have to help. Try to climb up while I pull."

Cedes slammed the toe of her sneaker against the wall of dirt until she made a deep enough gap to get a toehold. She tried to think of it like climbing a rock wall for exercise, only without the steep drop to almost-certain death below. Inch by inch, working as a team, she and Rachel managed to pull her all the way to the edge.

But Rachel didn't move to help her climb up.

"Rachel," Cedes gasped. "Move back. I can't climb up with you right in front of me."

A slow, feral smile curved Rachel's lips. "I know. And the end of the rope isn't tied around the tree any longer.. All that's keeping you from falling to your death are two loops of rope around my wrist. Kind of makes you wish you were nicer to me in high school, doesn't it? Or that you'd kept your hands off my freaking boyfriend."

Cedes stared at her in horror, seeing her own death mirrored in the other woman's dark eyes.

Sam wrestled in the mud with Blaine, both of them fighting for control of the rifle. Sirens sounded in the distance, drawing ever closer.

Blaine's mouth contorted with rage. "Damn my father. He must have heard the gunshot and called the cops."

"Just let the gun go," Sam told the much shorter man who had military skills in fighting in all conditions. "No one else has to get hurt." He wrenched one hand free and slammed it under Blaine's jaw.

Blaine fell back against the ground, cursing. Both men lost their grip on the gun. It went flying over their heads, landing somewhere near the tree line. Blaine got to his feet first, shoving himself toward the woods. Sam punched him in the middle of his spine. A bloodcurdling scream filled the air and Blaine flipped onto his back, arching off the ground and whimpering like a dog that had been kicked in the ribs.

Sam whirled around and sprinted toward the cliff to find Cedes. His stomach clenched with dread when he saw Rachel on her knees at the edge, a rope wrapped around her left hand. Just beyond her, Cedes clutched the other end of the rope with one hand, while clawing at the dirt with her other hand, desperately seeking a handhold.

The sirens stopped somewhere down the hill, back toward the cabin. But Sam couldn't wait for backup. He slipped and slid on the muddy ground, using both his hands and his feet to make his way toward Rachel and Cedes. Then moonlight reflected off what was lying on the ground beside Rachel.

A machete.

Shouts sounded from farther down the incline. Blue and red lights flashed. Blaine was coming after him. But Sam couldn't waste even a second to turn around.

He half ran, half slid the last few yards toward Cedes, watching with horror as Rachel raised the machete.

"No!" Sam dived forward in a rolling slide, grabbing Cedes's arms. He swung her up and over the cliff toward solid ground as the machete arced through the air.

Wind rushed beside Sam and Cedes as the wicked blade narrowly missed both of them. But without something to block her forward momentum, Rachel couldn't stop herself. She screamed as she plummeted over the side of the cliff. Then her scream was abruptly cut off.

Cedes cried out in horror. "No, Rachel!"

They both carefully looked over the edge. Cedes cried out again and closed her eyes.

Sam pulled her to him, rocking her against his chest. "There was nothing we could do."

A guttural shout of rage sounded from down the hill. Sam jerked his head around just as near the tree line Blaine brought up his rifle, swinging it toward them.

Sam shoved Cedes to the ground, covering her body with his as the rifle boomed.

Everything went silent.

Even the thunder had stopped, and the rain had slowed to a gentle mist.

Sam slowly lifted his head.

Blaine Anderson lay in the mud twenty feet away, his sightless eyes staring up at the moon overhead. And behind him, standing with the aid of a cane, was his father. Holding a pistol. He stared a long moment at Sam and Cedes. Then his shoulders slumped and he slowly lowered the gun. Without a word, he dropped it in the mud and started hobbling back down the slope.

Cedes pushed herself up on her elbows, her eyes wide and frightened. "What just happened?"

"Blaine's father saved our lives. I have no idea why."

She blinked as if she couldn't comprehend what he was saying. And then she covered her face with her hands and collapsed against him, great gasping sobs making her entire body shake.

"Ah, honey." Sam scooped her up in his arms and rocked her against him.

The hillside erupted into chaos. Sam's SWAT team descended upon them, securing the scene. Schuester started barking out orders. And soon a team of EMTs was racing up the hill.

Sam didn't wait for them. He ran with his precious burden to a waiting ambulance.

Two months later...

Cedes stood at the wall of glass, watching the season's first snowfall drift down onto Sam's deck. This was her first day back in Destiny since she'd nearly fallen to her death off a cliff and Sam was almost killed by the one Anderson who'd ever shown Cedes a kernel of kindness. She was still trying to come to terms with everything that had happened. But it was going to take a while.

Strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her back against a solid, familiar chest. She wrapped her arms over Sam's and sighed.

"I love you," she said.

"I know. You don't have to keep telling me that. I'm convinced."

"And?"

"And I love you, too." His voice was husky and deep with emotion.

She sighed again, happier than she'd ever thought she could be.

He kissed the side of her neck and gently swayed with her in his arms as they watched fall turn into winter right before their eyes.

"I never heard what happened to the cashier who helped that gang at the Piggly Wiggly," she said. "Sugar, right?"

"Schuester argued for her to be sent to a minimum security facility instead of doing hard time. She's finally getting the counseling she needs. Maybe without her ex-con father's influence, she'll turn her life around and not end up like him."

"That was awfully nice of your boss."

"He's not the ogre you think he is."

She shrugged, not quite ready to forgive. Although she was pretty sure she would one day soon.

"Is everything finally settled with Robert Anderson Senior?" she asked.

"Mmm-hmm. He confessed to hiring the gunmen. He was convinced you'd killed his son. But after hearing the gunshot the night we were on the cliff, and driving out to his son's house and seeing that recording, he couldn't fool himself any longer. I guess we owe our lives to the fact that Blaine kept that recording. If his father hadn't seen it before tracking us, he might not have chosen to shoot Blaine. He'd probably have shot us."

She shivered, the memories of that night still capable of giving her nightmares. "What happens to Mr. Anderson now?"

"Nothing. He's under hospice care. He probably won't live out the week. And I don't know about you, but I think he's suffered enough for his sins. Losing two sons, one by his own hand, has to be devastating."

"You feel sorry for him?"

"I suppose I do."

She squeezed his arms. "I'm not surprised. You're a good man. You care about people, whether they deserve it or not."

"If that's yet another way of apologizing or saying you aren't worthy of my love, knock it off."

He knew her so well. She turned her head to the side and rubbed her cheek against his chest. He rested his head on top of hers and they stood there a long time, content just to hold each other.

Finally, he said, "How did your assistant, Marley, take the news that you're taking an extended leave of absence from the recording studio to spend some time with me?"

She stiffened in his arms. "That's not exactly what I told her."

He stepped back and turned her around to face him. His brows rose with worry. "You've changed your mind?"

"I guess you could say that. I sold the studio to her. I will still write songs and come in for recordings, but she is now the primary owner. I am just the talent."

He couldn't have looked more surprised. "But I thought you loved helping people who Nashville weren't willing to sign to follow their dreams and become recording artists."

"I do like helping people, but I am confident that Marley can fulfill that need. I have new dreams that require staying right here in Destiny.

He grew very still, his eyes blazing at her with an intensity that had her whole body flushing hot.

"What are you saying, Cedes?"

She slid her arms around his waist and tilted her head back to look at him. "I'm saying that with Cooper Anderson's case finally closed, and nothing else hanging over my head, it's time that I rectified a terrible decision I made many years ago."

His throat worked, but no sound came out.

She cleared her own throat, already getting tight with emotion. "Sam, I love you so much. I was wondering..."

"Yes?" he rasped.

"I was wondering if I could wear one of your T-shirts."

He blinked, then threw his head back and laughed, a great booming sound that filled her heart with joy. He grinned and scooped her up in his arms, then jogged through the house to his bedroom. He didn't stop until he was in front of the chest of drawers. Then he settled her against him, holding her with one arm as he yanked the top drawer open.

"Any particular T-shirt you prefer, Mercedes Jones?"

She dipped her hand into the drawer and pulled out the black velvet box. "This one will do nicely."

He turned serious, cradling her against him as if he'd never let her go. His eyes darkened with more love than seemed possible for one person to hold in his heart for another. More love than Cedes could ever hope to deserve. But she would happily spend the rest of her life trying, and loving him back even more.

"And I prefer to be called Mrs. Evans from this day forward, if you don't mind."

His mouth slowly lowered to hers, stopping inches away as he carried her toward the bed. "I don't mind, Mrs. Evans. I don't mind at all." And then he kissed her.

I think Rachel is a rat, who may be part of what's happening. Her arrival seems too calculated.

As you saw Rachel was the ultimate rat a rat that will kill for a love that never existed.

whoknowstv chapter 7 . Mar 30

I totally agreed on the things in bold LOL.

So it turns out that the Piggly Wiggly hostage saga was an inside job with Sugar providing the information that the criminals needed.

I guess I was right. Robert Anderson does appear to be the financial backer concerning the scheme against Mercedes. Personally, I thought that this was going to be an eye for an eye situation. You killed my son, so I am going to kill you. I had never thought that they just wanted to kidnap her, hold her hostage, and threaten her life, so she could confess to something that she may or may not have done. I don't think Mercedes had anything to do with Cooper's murder, but that doesn't prevent his rich father from thinking otherwise.

Sugar should have the book thrown at her. The lookout should get the same punishment as those that terrorized the patrons of Piggly Wiggly.

The part that I don't understand is how did they know when Mercedes was going to go to the store? Why not at the bank or at the diner? Why did they choose to kidnap her in public? Why not storm her mother's house in the middle of the night and grab her?

But now we know that Cooper was stalking Mercedes and was doing it for about a year prior to his death. It was only a tease of information. That Mercedes had begged the police for help, but Schuester didn't do anything. For as far as I know, Schuester could have been on the take by Robert Anderson to make sure that nothing happened to Cooper. Schuester didn't do anything to save Mercedes from the stalking, but he had wasted no time in locking her up once Cooper's body was found. Probably arrested her on the orders of Robert Anderson, but since the judge was not bought, Schuester was forced to release her. We still don't know how Cooper was killed.

Lets face it. Robert Anderson had money. Mercedes was a scared teenager, who was raised by a single mother. Who would take the word of a teenager over a rich, powerful member of the community?

After that kind of treatment, no wonder she has such distrust of the judicial system. Sam's hero had caused that. The situation with Cooper had shaped her life and changed the whole projectory of her life. Chief Schuester had yet to apologize for his lack of action in the Cooper stalking situation and his actions concerning Cooper's murder. If he is not on the take, then he needs to own it, apologize to her, and do everything in his power to make it up to her.

What Sam needs to do is to stand up to him about Mercedes. Every time that Schuester insist that she come into the police for questioning, Sam needs to remind him that she refuses because of how Schuester had treated her in the past and have yet to apologize for it. It is because of him that she does not trust the police. That in her mind, you had made it clear where your loyalties lie and it is the wealthy in this town. That he had scarred her and it is due to those scars, she won't come in, much less talk.

If only Mercedes sued the Destiny Police Department for false arrest, preventing the terrorist type threats from Cooper, and defamation of character.

When Mercedes in the first chapter thought that she was right when she had turned down Sam all of those years ago. That Sam was now a cop and living his dream. I didn't understand it then, but I understand it now. She knew that Sam would never leave Destiny. That if he was going to be a cop, he would be working for Schuester. The same man that refused to prevent Cooper from stalking her. Sam was tight with the man. If she had said yes to Sam, then Schuester would always be in her life and that is something that she didn't want to deal with. She also didn't want Sam to choose between her and his hero.

As for Sam, he was pushing her buttons. Knowing her feelings about being thrown in jail 10 years ago and her still bitter resentment due to it, for him to say "I could arrest you for obstructing a police investigation" was below the belt. He definitely deserved Mercedes response about if he does that, both Schuester and him could share stories about how they both threw her in jail and have a big laugh over it while drinking beer. I don't think that Mercedes should have apologized for that statement because he deserved it. But Sam sure as hell should have apologized for his instead of having hurt feelings and leaving.

BTW: Mercedes should have pressed charges against Rachel. With that threat alone, it would have caused her to negotiate. Maybe do some community service and paying for the damage to Mercedes' SUV and the emotional stress of having bullets fly at her.

Until we meet again ... Goodnight Bunnies!

Mowatts87 chapter 7 . Mar 29

If Cedes did kill Cooper it was out of self defense.

You were so close to figuring it out, I was impressed.

whoknowstv chapter 6 . Mar 29

No, thank you for taking the time to give such in depth reviews that I enjoy reading so much because sometimes our thought processes are alike. However, I didn't write this, so the twists and turns and quick happy ending was not up to me this time...

Thank you so very much for this surprise story! You know me, I am a BIG fan of your stories and I look forward to every summer when you crank out another multi-chapter masterpiece! It is a huge treat to get this extra story on my feed.

With this quarantine, social distancing, and all of the Coronavirus stories on the news, it has me a little jumpy. Talk about a real life Outbreak. Who knew that a 25 year old movie would become our reality? At this rate, I will become Sandra Bullock's character in another 25 year old movie, The Net, and not leave my house ever again.

Instead of reviewing each chapter as it comes, I decided to just place in my thoughts or questions about the first 6 chapters that you had posted today. I hope that is okay.

It seems that somebody wants to kill Mercedes. One attempt wasn't good enough, so another one was done on the same day. For as far as we know, a third one could have been planned for the near future. Mercedes told herself no lies when she said to herself that things come in threes. But they also say that with three strikes you are out. Good thing that Sam decided to have someone keep an eye on her. If Sam had it his way, he would have watched her 24/7, but the urge to figure out why someone wants her dead is strong.

So, who wants Mercedes dead? There are a couple of suspects that are running through my mind.

1: Robert Anderson. He seems convinced that Mercedes had killed his son Cooper. Apparently, Cooper was the only son that he had cared about. The Piggly Wiggly hostage taker, Rick Nelson, did state that his group was paid $50,000 to kill/harm/scare Mercedes. With those kinds of funds, it requires someone who has that kind of money. So far, the only one that meets that bill is Robert Anderson. Not to mention the way he went off on her does say extreme hatred.

2: Chief Schuester. I just don't trust him. Sometimes, small town sheriffs usually don't shine their badge as often as they could. It is a little tarnished. Paid to look the other way. Why is he shoving Hunter down everyone's throat? Why hire Hunter from the outside and place him on an elite SWAT team? Why not hire someone from in house, like Jake Puckerman? Not to mention the fact, that Chief Schuester appears to be a childhood hero of Sam's. After all, Sam became a cop because of him. Practically sat in the front row each time that Chief Schuester came to the school for career day. When you put someone like that high up on a pedestal, it is only a matter of time before they come crashing down. To me it seems that Sam is going to find out the hard way that even super heroes have faults. They are human just like the rest of us. Sam is going to need Cedes when his ideal hero takes a devastating fall off that pedestal. Somebody on the Destiny police force is on the take, and I feel that it is him.

Those are my two suspects.

The rest of my thoughts deal with everything surrounding Cooper's murder. How did Cooper die? Why was he killed? Where was he killed? What does Rachel have to do with it? How did Mercedes know him? What made Schuester drag Mercedes downtown, toss her in jail, and basically accused her of committing the crime? Was there even a trial? If there wasn't, is the case still open? If there was, then chances are she would have been found not guilty, but the police wouldn't re-investigate because they felt that they had gotten the right person. But if that is the case, why do people still feel that she did it? The Piggly Wiggly patrons couldn't help but gossip about it and treat her like crap. I wouldn't be surprised if Gladys spat on her order.

I am six chapters in, but I don't know why Mercedes ran away. I don't know why Mercedes would have said no to Sam's proposal? Of course, if it was me, I would have said no too because they were only 18 at the time. Break the small town stereotype that small town kids use the Prom as their engagement party, and get married after their high school graduation ceremony because they were already at church anyway. Did she say no before he had signed up to be a cop? Mercedes seems to have a troubling view of cops. I need to understand why that is the case. Everyone talks about Cooper's murder, but so far, no one has provided any clear details as to what happened.

Was there framed evidence against her?

Mercedes is doing her best to try and not to tell Sam the real reason as to why she left. Especially when she was alone with him in her mother's house, as well as the barn, we kept reading that she just wants to answer all of his questions fully, but she never seems to. I can understand why she didn't in the barn because she was so hurt by the one sided conversation that she had heard at her lawyers. But I do not understand why she didn't confess everything in her mother's house. They were alone. It should have been the one place where she would have been safe ... that is until a bullet was aimed straight at her head.

But she stayed away. Sam was right. Mercedes could have called. She could have emailed. She could have done the old fashioned Dear John letter. She could have given it to her mother, so she could give it to him. But Mercedes was right too. Sam could have come to her. In an age of the internet, he could have found her easily. She wasn't hiding her location on the worldwide web. Mercedes had a business, and in order to still have a business, you have to advertise. Even if Sam didn't want to do an internet search, he had an accessible person with the 411. A person who he had planted Lily's for. A person to whom he still spoke to. Instead, Sam chose not to do any of those options. He knew that Mercedes mother had ordered her not to come back into town because of the gossip. So why didn't he go to her?

Final thoughts:

1: I don't think that Mercedes should have let her lawyer have the power of attorney. If Remington was so in love with Mercedes mother (as Mercedes had suspected) why was he even representing Robert Anderson? Personally,

2: I don't think that Mercedes' father had an accident on that road. I think that he had a little help with that curve. Maybe the land that Mercedes wanted to be deeded back to the individuals who are farming on that land have something to do with it. That a piece of land had something to do with everything ... including Cooper's murder.

3: Did Mercedes' mom really suffered a heart attack or was she murdered to?

4: Did Mercedes turned down Sam's proposal to keep him safe?

5: Will there be another hostage situation at the local Piggly Wiggly?

All of these questions and more will be answered on the next episode of Soap ... I mean Dangerous Homecoming. My thoughts exactly.

One thing is for sure, Mercedes homecoming has been very dangerous, not only for her, but for Sam too.

FYI: Piggly Wiggly is a real live grocery store chain. It is not a made up store by TBloves2read. So True

Thank you for still contributing to SamCedes fanfiction with new/updated stories. Thank you for entertaining me for all of these years.
