Scorpius accidentally gets his interpreter fired. It's not his fault that his teacher made it so easy to cheat, but he was able to talk to his interpreter on the tests. What did his teacher expect? His new interpreter, though, is apparently a student. Scorpius almost groans when he meets the guy, because he looks like the type of student to be no-nonsense. He's not going to be able to cheat with this guy.

His interpreter's name is Albus, and Scorpius waves hello at him.

You're in my year? Scorpius asks. They're sitting in the principal's office, so they can get to know each other before Albus interprets to him.

Yeah, Albus signs back. We share all of our classes, and I know sign language, so I was chosen.

Scorpius nods, and he'd never admit it, but it's actually nice to know that someone else in his class knows sign language. He was deafened when he was seven, so he can speak pretty well, and he's gotten a lot of practice at reading lips, so no one really bothers to use sign language around him. He's fine with it, because why should he expect people to learn a whole new language just to talk to him? Especially when he can understand them fine without it. Still, he prefers to use sign language. It's easier for him.

It's sort of nice to know that someone else in his school can talk to him in the way that he wants to talk.

Thank you, Scorpius tells Albus, and Albus smiles. Scorpius likes his smile. He might not be able to use his deafness to cheat anymore, but Scorpius thinks he'll be fine with that.

Albus is also nice to look at, which definitely helps, he thinks. Maybe he'll gain something better out of this interpreter.
