The number on his wrist goes up every single day. It's frustrating, Albus thinks, because there are plenty of people he sees every single day. He goes to school, after all. He's pretty sure the problem is the same for a lot of people, because he at least knows that Scorpius' number goes up the same amount as his daily.
Their school is small enough that everyone has the same classes, so it could be anyone in Albus' year. He also knows that the numbers started increasing when he was in sixth year, which doesn't really help, either. Most of his class has been his classmates since then.
"I just don't get it," Albus rants to Scorpius as they stand in line to get lunch. The only reason Albus is sure that Scorpius is his best friend is that Scorpius has heard this rant countless times, ever since they became friends in sixth year. Yet, Scorpius has never gotten annoyed at Albus.
"It should be easy to figure it out, it's just not!" Albus rants, grabbing an apple.
"You know what you need?" Scorpius says, leaning forward to get food. "You need to pay attention to which girls aren't here. Then you can see who it is when your number doesn't go up."
Albus stares at Scorpius in shock.
"You're a genius," he says. Scorpius just smirks.
…
For the next few weeks, Albus' number continues to go up. He rules out some girls it's not because his number has gone up when they were in school, and there's only two girls that he thinks it could be, but he's not sure which yet.
One day, though, his number doesn't move. It takes him until the third period to realize. He turns to Scorpius to tell him when he remembers — Scorpius didn't come to school today. He sighs, figuring that he should just see which girls in his year aren't in school.
Albus counts everyone twice, and he thinks something must be wrong.
Because every girl is in school.
In fact, the only person not in class today is —
It hits Albus like a ton of bricks. Knowing Scorpius, he probably knew, also. He can't believe that he spent years ranting about his soulmate, well, to his soulmate.
Albus has some stern talking to do after school.
And maybe a kiss to give.
