Chapter 55:
Over the next few days Shay, his friends and their small group of rebellious cadets harassed the Juvenile Officers. Of course the Juvenile Officers didn't know who it was doing the harassing but they were firm in not giving into the harassers. One officer suggested talking to Yuya as he had been going from room to room talking to people prior to their predicament starting. Aster had asked Yuya what was going on but at that time he had stopped and had claimed he was looking for something but had since found it.
"Kale's warning about my attracting the Juvenile Officers attention saved us from having to deal with them finding out what is really going on," Yuya commented.
"He has our thanks for sure," Shay admitted as he and his friends separated for their classes.
On her way to her class Rain passed by Kaz. They locked eyes as they came up to each other and she knew he had something to share. As they passed Kaz grabbed her, pinned her to the wall and quickly kissed her before slipping a piece of paper into her hand.
"Let this pass onto a few of our friends before it reaches Shay," Kaz quickly told her. Instead of nodding she locked eyes with him again and he knew she understood.
"Hey break it up and get to class," Julia Krystal ordered fiercely.
"Sorry I guess I have a little trouble keeping my hands to myself when I see a pretty girl," Kaz flirted to keep Julia's eyes on him.
"Just get to class. Now."
The next person to get the note was Rain's brother Shawn. Rain pretended to feel dizzy when she ran into him. Shawn caught her while pretending to look alarmed and she gave him the note.
"It's from Kaz. He says to let a few of us touch it before Shay gets it," Rain whispered.
"Are you okay," Shawn asked loud enough so no one would get suspicious.
"Yeah. I'm fine probably just pushing myself to much for the Professor," Rain said playing along. "We have to do our best remember? I'll be alright," she added a smile for effect in case any Juvenile Officers were watching them.
Shawn headed to the training field after encountering his sister. Devon was out there. Shawn stood next to his fellow cadet and waited for Barrett to arrive.
"At some point start a fight with me. Kaz found out something but doesn't want the Juvenile Officers finding out or realizing what's up. When I give this to you find a way to either get it to Shay or one of the others minus Rain and Kaz."
"Already got one. And it fits with the whole fight thing if I get kitchen duty," Devon whispered back.
Barrett soon arrived. He separated the cadets into the usual two groups and as luck would have it Shawn and Devon were in the same group and were stuck doing exercises. After doing all the other exercises the boys hit the climbing ropes. It was here they staged their mock fight.
The idea was for them to pretend to compete to be the best. When Devon pretended to win and got to the top of his rope first he mentioned something about asking Shawn's sister out since he had beaten her brother and won the rights to her. Shawn pretended to be angry and the fight began.
"Hey break it up. You're already at the bottom of the top cadet list and you'll never get to the top. Kitchen duty for the next week. Both of you. Starting today"
Before Barrett even got to the combatants Devon already had the note for Shay in his possession. Now all he had to do was deliver it. During his kitchen duties tonight at supper he would find a way to get to shay's table. Whether it was to collect plates and silverware or if Shawn agreed to do the dishes he could clean the tables and reach Shay just as he was leaving.
It was the end of the day. Supper was just starting and Shawn and Devon were on their way to the kitchen to eat and then start their punishment for their earlier fight. Devon had decided to clean the tables and quickly hand the note to Shay. He just had to make sure Shawn was okay with dish duty.
"How are you for doing the dishes so I can clean tables?" he asked.
"As your cleaning the tables you can discreetly pass that note to Shay. Sounds like a plan. Except…"
Shawn trailed off he and Devon both knew what he was going to say. When a cadet had kitchen duty usually an instructor or Juvenile Officer would remain in the dining hall with the cadet. This was to make sure the cadet did what they were supposed to do and stayed to do all of it.
"How am I going to get the note to Shay without whoever is overseeing our punishment seeing what I'm doing?" Devon asked. "I'll have to think of a good plan fast."
Supper came and went. Shawn and Devon ate quickly then headed to the back of the kitchen to start their duties. As they got up from their table Shay noticed and glanced at them. He watched as they went into the kitchen and realised they had gotten into trouble. Why though?
"You start the dishes and I'll do the oven, stove, counters and then head out to start the tables," Devon spoke as if they hadn't already decided what they were doing already.
"Sounds like a plan," Shawn played along.
It didn't take long for Devon to get the stove and the oven done. He was cleaning the serving counter so he could watch for when Shay was about to leave. Some of the cadets were already starting to leave so Devon could start the tables soon.
"It wouldn't look good if you waited till Shay's table was empty," Shawn advised. "Once you're done with the serving counter if quite a few tables are empty go clean them and work your way over to Shay."
"You'll take care of the other counters?" Devon asked.
Shawn nodded.
"Kit Blade is the one making sure we do our punishment," Devon told Shawn pointing out the Juvenile Officer leaning against the wall watching everything going on around him.
"You still sure you can get that note to Shay?" asked Shawn.
This time it was who Devon nodded.
Devon finished with the serving counter and did a few more counters in the kitchen before heading out to the dining hall to see what tables could be done. He was shocked to see Shay and Yuya were still at their table but they were the only ones there. Where was the rest of their group? Suddenly an idea hit Devon and he acted on it.
"Is everything okay?" Devon asked approaching the table in question.
"Yuya's not feeling well," Shay responded as he locked eyes with Devon.
The look in Shay's eyes told Devon this was an act. That Yuya was pretending to feel sick. They were giving either Shawn or Devon a reason to approach their table. With the note safely in his pocket Devon had done just that.
"Cadet Sakaki you okay?" Devon asked him as he knelt down next to Yuya.
Yuya lifted his head from the table to glance at Devon, waiting for an explanation as to why he and Shawn were on kitchen duty.
"Shawn and I staged a fight to get kitchen duty," Devon explained.
He removed the note from his pocket and placed his arms around Yuya in a way that made it look like he was giving him a bit of support to stand up. Shay saw the note and realised the reason for what the two punished boys had done.
"It's from Kaz. He didn't want the Juvenile Officers to suspect what we are doing so he had the note switch hands before you got it."
"Hey what's going on here?"
Kit was approaching the three at the table with an angry and suspicious look. He stopped a few feet away from them and crossed his arms glaring at Devon.
"You're supposed to be cleaning not socializing," he told the younger boy.
"Sorry. I was just assisting a fellow cadet who isn't feeling well," Devon insisted from where he stood next to Yuya who was now leaning on him.
Yuya suddenly clutched at his stomach. In doing so he hid the note from Kit and grabbed it at the same time. Shay saw the action and acted. He quickly moved in to support Yuya. He pulled Yuya to his feet and directed him to the entrance.
"Just get him to his room," Kit told Shay before directing his attention back to Devon. "You get back to work."
As soon as Shay and Yuya got a good distance away from the dining hall they dropped the illness act. They rushed up the stairs and to Yuya's room. Once inside Yuya handed the note to Shay who read it and decided to discuss it with the others during their next meeting.
That's it for this chapter still more to come hopefully it won't be another long wait for another chapter. What will happen next? Is Kite alive still? Is Celina? And what about Sora? who will die next? Keep reading to find out.
