TRAINER OF A DIFFERENT CALIBER
Disclaimer: I don't own any part of the Pokémon franchises.
Warning: This is mainly an OC story, which follows the anime a little bit, but takes place a couple of years before Ash begins his journey, and the characters from the show will only have like a brief appearance in this story.
Here is a heads up; I'm going to ignore the four attack limit rule because while it's good for the game, I find it pointless anywhere else.
Oh, starting with this chapter, I'm just going to stop doing the reminder lists, mainly because at some point, it would be too much of a hassle every time I add new pokemon to the list. I might do an occasional one, but other than that, I'm just not going to bother anymore.
Also, I'm just going to skip to the end of the contest, because I'm not sure on how to write it. The game version seems more incomplete, and the anime version, not sure on how to make pokemon moves seem dazzling in a show setting.
On with the story . . .

Cerulean City-Day of the gym battle
The trio are having breakfast, while Cindy is enjoying her first ribbon from yesterday's win. Using her Clefairy and Vulpix to get though a nerve-racking performance. After spending the week between their return from Bill's Cottage and her first contest preparing everything, everything came to fruition.
Bulla was in her room, fuming. She spent the week looking down at Cindy, saying how she was going to come out on top, only to lose in the first round. Apparently, you had to actually train and practice for the event, not start two days before hand believing things well work out because you demand them to. Most of the week was spent on looking good, while she spent little to no time training her pokemon.
But going back to the main trio, they were just enjoying the peace and quiet, while their pokemon are enjoying their chow. Or rather, the ones that were still with them, since each one sent a couple of pokemon to their respective homes. One of them being Bulbasaur, who Will would have liked to use for his gym battle but felt that he still needed to earn more of its trust before having it battle in such situations.
Cindy decided to speak up, "I'll be cheering for both you during your gym battles." She said, while the pokemon gave off their own little cheer to the ones that well be battling.
"Thanks Cindy." Both boys said, just after finishing off their breakfast. Looking to see that the pokemon have finished their chow, they all stood up to start their day.
After picking up Magikarp, the trio started to walk towards the gym. Along the way, Cindy decided to confirm something that is bothering her. "Are you really going to use Magikarp in an underwater battle?"
"Well yeah, considering that it's the only gym with a pool to use a pokemon like Magikarp." Will said, while also understanding where she is coming from. "And yes, I know that magikarp are known to be amongst the most useless pokemon there is. But Professor Oak told me that sometimes one success in pokemon can be shown in their evolution, and I want to see if that can be proven true with Magikarp."
"And you don't want to try your luck with a gyarados that is fully evolved and has a mean tempor." Jerome said, already having a good idea on the main reason why.
"That too." Will said.
"So you're hoping that when Magikarp evolves, that it would still recognize you without too much trouble?" Cindy asked, getting some comfirmaiton.
"That and the fact that I would have pay for any damages caused if that gyarados were to go on a rampage." Will said.
This caused the two to go wide eyed, thinking about what were to happen if a gyaradyos started Hyper Beaming right after evolution. Now they are keeping their fingers cross that it would never happen.
After reaching their destination, the trio stepped inside to greet the receptionist there. As it turns out, there are total of three gym leaders who are sisters. The gym comes in two parts: One of them used for a gym battle, while the other is used as an aquarium that they use to do shows with. The reason for the receptionist is that the trio would rather put on a show than do gym battle, going as far as to make it some other day when they would battle. The day they don't want, they would rather leave out a box full of gym badges for the trainers to help themselves.
The receptionist gave the boys an apologetic smile, "I'm sorry boys, the gym leaders decided to cancel your battles, and give you your Cascade Badge." She said, handing them their badges, "There are days when those three just don't want to be a gym leader, even if they have an appointment."
After accepting their badges, sensing that arguing would be pointless, "How did three divas become gym leaders in the first place?" Cindy asked out loud, while the boys added their badges into their cases.
The receptionist shrugged her shoulders, as if this isn't the first time somebody asked that, "As far as anybody in Cerulean can tell, their parents were gym leaders, and they wanted to become famous. So there was a compromise involved." She explained, getting three gobsmack looks from the trio. "Yeah, I had that same reaction too when their youngest sister told me."
"There's another sister?" Will asked, not realizing the storm that was brewing nearby.
"That's right, there is another sister!" Everybody turned around to see a red-headed girl, who looked like a tomboy with a ponytail sticking out of the top of her head. Looking like she wants to commit murder. "My name is Misty and I am the fourth sister, and also the gym leader here."
Giving each other a look, "Why doesn't anybody know anything about you?" Cindy asked.
"Because my sisters always have to be the center of attention." Misty yelled out, letting loose a lot of steam, "Even when I think I'm about to get noticed, my sisters swoop in to take the attention away from it." Her fist shaking with a bottled-up rage that is not doing her health any good.
Seeing that this girl could use an outlet, "So, do you want to battle or what?" Will asked out of the blue, shocking everybody in the room.
"What? Why? You already accepted your badge." Misty yelled out, trying to figure out this new guy.
"Yes, I have my badge, so what?" Will countered back, "Right now, the way I see it, you could use an outlet for your anger. So how about a pokemon battle to let off some steam."
A spark appeared in her eyes, showing that Misty has been waiting for somebody to test her skills on. "Okay you're on." Turning towards the receptionist, "Is the battle pool ready?"
"Always." The receptionist said with a smile. Feeling glad that Misty is finally being allowed to shine, even if the audience is going to be minimal.
"Come on, I'll show you the way." Misty said, feeling anxious to test her skills on a willing trainer. While on the inside, she is hoping that her sisters don't interfere.
When they reached their destination, which was a large rectangle pool, with a few platforms floating here and there. Jerome and Cindy are standing along the side, while Will and Misty took their battle positions.
"Okay, this well be a one-on-one battle." Misty said, pulling out a pokeball, "Give me your best shot." She called out as throwing out her Goldeen, a pokemon that looks like a goldfish.
"You got it." Will said, before throwing his pokeball, letting Magikarp into the water.
Misty's eyes widen at the pokemon that her opponent has chosen. "Wait, you're actually using a magikarp in a pokemon battle?" She asked out loud.
Will just gave a small shrug, "What, it's a pokemon, this a battle, and I'm a trainer." He said, "If I don't bring out the full potential of all of my pokemon, then I'm doing a lousy job as one."
Giving off a big smile, "Well then, I hope you raised it well for this battle." Misty said, before commencing the battle.
In another room, set up as a dressing room for the regionally known Sensational Sisters of Cerulean City, are watching the battle on a TV setup for them. Daisy, Lily and Violet wanted to see how well their sister does in a battle. Or rather, Lily was just looking for more material to use in order to make her younger sister feel worthless.
When they seen the pokemon that Misty would be battling against, they thought that this would be an easy win for her. Because after all, who would be crazy enough to use a pokemon as pathetic as magikarp in a battle.
Back at the battle, everybody was watching as two fish pokemon battled it out underwater. For the trio, this is the first time they got to see such an event going on. For Misty, who has done these occasionally, was feeling impressed on how well her opponent is doing.
"Wow, you did an amazing job raising your magikarp." Misty said, with a big smile on her face, only for it to turn into a determine one, "But you are still going to lose."
Will just gave a small smile, "Only one way to find out." He said, while looking towards the water, planning his next move. When it comes to battling underwater, one must act like gravity doesn't exist. The pokemon swimming in the water can move in any direction, and you have to trust your pokemon's judgement when you issue an attack.
After a while, Misty decided to finish things. "Goldeen, use Supersonic!" She yelled out. Following her trainer's command, Goldeen sent out sound waves so powerful, due to the water providing it with a strong boost, it hit home really hard on Magikarp. Causing it to swim haphazardly in random directions, running into random objects.
"Magikarp, shake it off!" Will yelled out, trying to get through to his pokemon. Hoping to keep it from knocking itself out, literally, by swimming blindly into everything within range.
Seeing this as the opportunity to deliver the finishing move, "Goldeen, use Horn Attack now." Misty yelled out.
Goldeen did what it was told, and charged in, with its horn glowing. Just as it was about to make contact with it's attack, Magikarp ended up moving out of the way at the last possible moment. Resulting in *crash* Goldeen colliding with a rock headfirst, resulting in it to float a bit while seeing stars.
This was when Magikarp was able to recover from the confusion. After shaking its head, and collecting its bearing, "Magikarp, are you ready to continue this?" Looking towards its trainer, it gave a small nod. "Good, use Flail on Goldeen." Will ordered. Magikarp complied with the order. Following that order, Magikarp charged in and started to use its tail to slap Goldeen with a vengeance. One thing about Flail is that its strength depends on how much damage the user has received during battle. If the user is healthy, nothing happens. If the user has taken quite the beaten, watch out.
After getting sent flying through water due to being slapped silly, Goldeen stopped itself, and got into a fighting stance. Even though it looks like its going to drop at any second, this pokemon was determined to fight. But Misty looked with worry, debating if she should let her pokemon battle, or take the lose in order to prevent any serious damage.
Will was looking at his Magikarp, who was not in any better condition. Seeing that his pokemon was trying to put up a strong front, but failing, he decided to make a call now. Before he can ask Misty if she wants to call it a draw, a large glow erupted from Magikarp's body
This caused quite the stir, since Misty, along with Cindy and Jerome, were watching in aw, as Magikarp's body started to change shape, going from fishlike and becoming more serpent like.
Back with the sisters, they were just as gob smacked at what they were watching. Not only was their youngest sister struggling with a magikarp, now they were watching it evolve on their TV.
Returning to the battlefield, the glow finally died down, to reveal a large sea serpent with what looked like a mustache growing on both sides of its mouth. The now fully evolved Gyarados gave out a loud roar, causing those in the room to cover their ears. Looking around, before finding Goldeen, who looked like it was trying not to release its breakfast.
"Gyarados leave Goldeen alone, now." Will yelled out. When Gyarados turned around to face him, "You heard me, leave it be. We will not be the bully."
When Gyarados lowered its head close to Will, everybody waiting to see if he was going to become history. Instead, it turned its head to Will, and rubbed it again his body. Giving a small smile, Will gave it a small pat on what would be the cheek, glad this pokemon still has some of the same loyalty and personality.
Misty gave a small sigh, glad that this battle of over. After both trainers called back their pokemon, "You know what, I'll gladly accept this as a draw." She said with a smile, which she got in return from everybody.
This when Cindy spoke up, "Um Misty, where is the bathroom? I'm going to need it."
Once that was asked, everybody realized that they needed to release some fear from between their legs real soon. "I'll show you the way."
After a few minutes of cleaning out their bowels, and meeting back in the lobby, "Well, Misty, you definitely have some skills." Will said, causing her to give off a big smile.
"Thanks, I have been practicing a lot." Misty said, "I really want to prove to my sisters that I'm anything but weak."
"Well, maybe you should consider leaving Cerulean City for a bit." Cindy said, getting a surprised look from the redhead. "I have an older sister who runs a daycare, and she always said that if you want to stay out of my shadow, you go out to the world and discover yourself."
"My brother said something similar." Will said, "He also told me that I could never be him, no matter what people say. If I want to be myself, I will need to choose my own path in the world and travel it."
Misty was thinking about the advice, "Well, I want to be a water pokemon master, so maybe I should leave on a journey." She said, not realizing that her sisters can hear her. "I'm tired of hearing Lily put me down, trying to make me feel like I can't accomplish anything. So maybe I should start my own journey sometime soon."
At the hall, Violet and Daisy were giving Lily the stink eye, while said person just gave a slight huff. Not wanting to admit to any wrongdoing.
"Well, take your time. Who knows, you might end up traveling with some friends of your own." Jerome said, as the trio stepped out of the gym. Not realizing the seed they might have planted for the future.
Well, here is the latest chapter. Sorry it took so long, allergies were being a bigger pain then usual. Stay safe during all of this craziness. Read and Review.
