The All Knowing Best Friend

Mal collapsed on her bed for what seemed liked the third time. She managed to check the time on her phone. 2:27. Then she fell into a deep sleep. Mal groaned as she slapped the alarm clock. She had to go to school, she had to act as everything was fine, no one could know that she was sick.

Mal slipped into her seat in Dragon Anatomy, it was in the back, by the door, so no one, not even the teacher, noticed she showed up to class a few minutes late. As the teacher explained something or another about a dragon's wishbone, Mal started to nod off. She couldn't help it, her eyes just drooped shut. She would wake up every once in a while, trying to keep up with the lesson, but it was very, very difficult for her.

Next was homeroom, which nothing ever happened in homeroom. It was like a shortened study hall, so Mal was able to rest. Evie came up to Mal, slightly worried. "M, are you feeling okay?"

"Perfectly fine," Mal lied. Evie gave her a strange look, as if trying to figure out if her friend was telling the truth or not. "I'm fine, E, okay?"

Evie nodded, letting the subject drop. In her next class, Bad Fairies, Mal felt better, she was awake and alert. It made her believe that her sickness or whatever it was, was gone. Then she went to her third class, art. While Mal was no longer tired, she didn't feel good. After class ended, the teacher, Mrs. LaRue, came up to Mal.

"Mal, sweetie, you don't look good, I think you should go back to the dorms." Mrs. LaRue suggested.

"I was thinking about that." Mal admitted.

"I think it's a good idea." Mrs. LaRue said. "Go to Fairy Godmother's office, she'll sort everything out for you."

Mal nodded. She left the room and ran down a little hallway, passing her next class, to the girls bathroom. She made it to the toilet just in time to throw up. Another girl in the bathroom ran to get a staff member. Fairy Godmother came a few minutes later. She helped Mal and took her to the office.

Once they made it to the office, Mal sat in a little nook in the hallway, drinking some water. She saw Doug pass by and for a moment she wanted to tell him that she wasn't going to be in English with him and Evie, but chose otherwise because she didn't want him, or anyone for that matter, to think she was weak, that would not be good.

Eventually, Mal was allowed to go back to her dorm room. She immediately went to sleep. A few hours later, Mal woke up and through her blurry vision saw her best friend's blue hair. "Eves?" Mal asked.

"Oh! You finally woke up." Evie exclaimed.

"What time is it?" Mal questioned.

"It's just after 2." Evie answered.

"Why aren't you in school?" Mal inquired. She was confused why Evie was in their dorm before 3 o'clock.

"Fairy Godmother pulled me out of classes and told me to look after you, that you were not feeling well today."

"I'm not sick." Mal grumbled.

"Based on what Fairy Godmother described, I'd beg to differ." Evie replied.

"I'm just tired." Mal whined.

"Go to sleep, M, you need rest." Evie whispered. Hours passed and Evie finished her homework and got herself dinner before starting on a new design, waiting for Mal to wake up. It was just before 7 when Mal opened her eyes again.

"Good, you're awake, you need to eat." Evie said.

"I'm starving." Mal groaned. Evie smiled and put a plate with a piece of toast in front of Mal. "What's this? I want some real food."

"Your stomach can't handle normal food, M, you're sick." Evie explained.

"I'm not sick!" Mal shouted.

"Mal what is so wrong with admitting that you're sick?" Evie asked.

"Because, being sick means being weak. I'm the leader of the group, I'm from the Isle of the Lost, I'm the daughter of Maleficent, I can't be weak. I have to be strong." Mal explained.

Evie nodded in understanding. "I get it, I do, but you know what makes you even stronger than never acknowledging weakness? Admitting that sometimes you are weak and need help."

Mal looked at her lap, thinking over what Evie had said. "I guess you're right, E."

"You know it. I'm always right." Evie smiled, dramatically flipping her hair and looking off into the distance. The two friends laughed. Mal ultimately owned up to being sick and let Evie practically nurse her back to health.
