The Adventures of Max and Leo: Summer now begins

Max and Leo gathered together in the hallway after the final bell rang signaling the end of the school year.

"Well, this is it," Max said. "The summertime for us has begun."

"Yep, it sure has," Leo said. "So, how does it feel to be going into the eighth grade passing with flying colors?"

"It feels great," Max said. "I'm glad you took it upon yourself to make sure I do well in class."

"Well, I wanted you to have a great school year," Leo said. "And you did . . . you even made honor roll for the first time that I remember."

"Well, thanks for all your help, Leo," Max said. "I hope you'll do the same for me when we go to the eighth grade."

"I'll be here to help you all the way to high school graduation," Leo said. "Believe me I'm not going anywhere, Max."

"I hope not, Leo," Max said. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"Well, you don't have to wonder," Leo said. "I'll still be here."

Max and Leo shared a hug.

"Plus, you'll get to spend most of the summer with me," Leo said. "You've already spent so many nights with me that my dad thinks you're moving in with me."

"I'm so excited to spend much of my summer with you that I don't know where to begin," Max said.

"Well, we have the day off of work, so we can go to my bedroom and play video games if you want," Leo said.

"I'd love that very much," Max said. "So, I guess we can say let our summer begin."

"We sure can," Leo said. "Let's go, Max."

Leo and Max left the school hallway for the final time until the beginning of the new school year . . .

Leo and Max came into Leo's bedroom and laid their backpacks and lunch boxes aside. Max went to Leo's bed and sat down while Leo started setting up the SNES for them to play.

"Hey, Leo, what game are we going to play?" Max asked.

"I figured we'd play Super Mario Kart since we haven't played that in a little while," Leo said.

"Sounds great," Max said. "Maybe we can play other games as well."

"I'm still waiting for NBA Jam and Super Mario Bros. All Stars to come out because I think those would be cool for us to play as well," Leo said.

"I'm sure our old basketball buddies would love NBA Jam," Max said.

"I'm sure they would, too," Leo said as he finished setting up the video game and turned the console on. "Well, Max, it's starting up."

"I see that," Max said as Leo set up two chairs for himself and Max. "I'm glad we're spending another afternoon together, Leo."

"I am too, Max," Leo said as he went to where Max was. "I wish you could spend the whole summer with me, but with me spending a week at computer camp and us going to work on different days some days, that can't happen, but I'll see to it that you spend as much of your summer with me as you can."

"I'd love that, Leo," Max said. "I look forward to the memories we're going to make this summer."

"Me, too," Leo said and then looked down at Max's feet. "Would you like for me to take your shoes off before we start having fun?"

"That would be great, Leo, thanks," Max said.

Leo then knelt down at Max's dangling feet, untied Max's shoes, took Max's shoes and socks off and laid them on the floor. Max and Leo then got up and the two then sat down on the chairs that Leo had set up and started playing Super Mario Kart . . .

After a couple of hours of playing, Leo said, "Well, that was a lot of fun."

"It sure was," Max said. "I've forgotten how awesome Super Mario Kart and Road Rash were."

"Yeah, we were all caught up in some of the games that came out in the last year," Leo said. "Well, anyway, how does tacos for dinner sound?"

"I'd love that, Leo," Max said.

"Alright, let's go to the kitchen," Leo said.

The two got up and Max followed Leo into the kitchen . . .

After dinner, Max waited at the dining table as Leo cleaned up the kitchen. Once Leo cleaned the kitchen, he went back to where Max was and sat down next to him.

"So, Max, what do you want to do now?" Leo asked.

"Well, can I go to the pool?" Max asked.

"Sure," Leo said. "Go have fun."

Max got up and took his shirt and shorts off, unveiling his Super Swimmer swimming suit.

"I can wash those for you if you want," Leo said. "There's nearly a full load in the washing machine anyhow."

"Okay, cool," Max said, handing his shirt and shorts to Leo. Leo went to the laundry room to put Max's shirt and shorts in the washing machine and to start the washing machine while Max went outside and started swimming in the pool . . .

After an hour and a half of swimming, Max lifted himself up to the edge of the pool and sat down on the edge. While he was sitting there, Leo came outside to check on Max.

"Hey, Max, how's it going?" Leo asked.

"I'm doing alright, just taking a break," Max said.

"Alright, want me to get the float for you?" Leo asked.

"Sure," Max said and then Leo got the float and placed it on the pool for Max to get on. Once Max got on, Leo allowed the float to roam free on the pool.

"Thanks, Leo," Max said.

"Sure thing, Max," Leo said. "So, I take it you want to sleep on the couch when it gets dark?"

"Yeah, I do," Max said.

"Alright, I'll call you in when it gets dark," Leo said. "Enjoy resting on the float."

"I will," Max said.

Leo went inside, leaving Max alone to rest on the float . . .

Later that evening, when it got dark, Leo came outside and went to the edge of the pool. Leo got the float and pulled it to the edge of the pool, waking Max up.

"I take it I'm going in?" Max asked.

"You sure are," Leo said. "Don't worry. I got the couch ready and I plan on making pancakes and eggs tomorrow."

"Sounds fantastic," Max said as he got off the float and stood at the edge of the pool. "I hope we get to have some more fun tomorrow."

"We will," Leo said as the two started for the back door. "Plus, your mom came by and brought a few of your belongings so you're prepared to stay with me at least a week, maybe even more if your heart desires."

"Awesome," Max said. "Plus, it won't be long before our Memorial Day weekend at the beach."

"Yeah and I just talked with that girl on the phone and she said she'll be spending Memorial Day weekend at the beach as well," Leo said as he opened the door and he and Max went in. "In fact, she'll be at Portland before she goes to the beach so you might get to see her before we go to the beach."

"That's awesome," Max said as Leo closed the door behind him and Max and they started down the kitchen. "I do miss her and still think of her from time to time so I was hoping we'd see each other soon. Although, I will tell you one thing . . ."

"What's that?" Leo asked as he and Max went through the kitchen to the living room.

"I'm going to miss some of the friends I've made at school," Max said as the two approached the couch.

"Well, they know where we live and some of them know where we work, so we'll see them from time to time," Leo said as he pulled back the blankets on the couch for Max to lay down on so Leo could put the blankets over Max. "Plus, Marv lives a couple of houses down from us and you know how he is about you so you'll definitely be seeing plenty of him."

Leo then heard a knock on the door. Leo went to answer it. It was Marv.

"Marv, I was just talking about you," Leo said. "Come on in."

Marv came in and Leo closed the door behind him.

"I was just tucking in Max for a good night's rest, but you can talk to him," Leo said.

Marv came to the couch where Max was laying down at.

"Hey, Marv, missed me already?" Max asked.

"You can say that," Marv said. "Plus, I was hoping I could spend some of my summer with you."

"What do you mean?" Max asked.

"Well, I do miss playing basketball with you," Marv said.

"You know . . . I do, too," Max said.

"Well, as you may know, for my birthday, my parents got me a new basketball goal and basketball," Marv said. "I was wondering if you and I could shoot some hoops tomorrow."

"I'd like that," Max said. "Maybe Leo can fix us some Gatorade to keep us hydrated."

"I've got plenty in the refrigerator, so why not?" Leo asked.

"Great," Marv said. "I look forward to it."

"Me, too," Max said. "Thanks for coming by. I was just thinking about our old team when you came by."

"I had the team on my mind, too," Marv said. "Want me to see if some of them can join us?"

"I'd like that," Max said.

"Great, well, I hope you rest well tonight," Marv said.

"I hope you do, too," Max said. "Thanks for stopping by."

"Thanks for letting me talk to Max," Marv said.

"Sure thing," Leo said. "Have a good night, Marv."

"You, too," Marv said.

Leo opened the front door allowing Marv out. Leo then closed the door and left Max alone in the living room to rest.
