"How much money do we have left?" Richie wondered. Eddie did the math in his head, silently adding and subtracting.
"About $120, I think. But we need food." Eddie furrowed his eyebrows. "Let's go see if we can find any fast food, that's cheap." Richie nodded, and the two boys set off to find food. Luckily, they were in America, which means you're never too far from a McDonald's. They ordered some chicken nuggets and fries, Richie insisting on a soda. Eddie gave in, and soon the two were sipping on a Dr Pepper.
"Hey, Rich?"
"Hmmm?"
"So I know we're planning to stay with your uncle, in Boston... but what if he doesn't let us stay?" Eddie questioned. "Did you even call to let him know we're coming?" Richie froze, looking like a deer caught in headlights.
"I, uh, I kinda just assumed he would let us stay," he shrugged. "It never really crossed my mind that he would turn us away." Eddie groaned, putting his head in his hands.
"Richie, you dumb fuck," he sighed, shaking his head. "You better call him then. I saw a payphone in the back." He dropped two quarters into Richie's palm.
"Alright." The curly-haired boy left to call his uncle, leaving the brunette alone to worry. He nibbled at a french fry, anxiously awaiting Richie's return. Which, unfortunately, was much sooner than he expected.
"Rich?"
"Heh, funny story..." The taller boy rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I don't know his number..." Eddie breathed out heavily, scrunching up his face.
"Seriously? I can't believe you!" Eddie spat angrily. He stood up, his 5'4 stature looking oddly intimidating. He stormed out of the McDonald's, leaving a stunned Richie behind. The older boy quickly threw out their garbage, hurrying out to find Eddie before it was too late. He spotted the smaller boy on a bench, his head in his hands.
"Eddie-" Richie gasped, staring into the other boy's teary eyes. Eddie reached up to brush away a stray tear, taking a deep breath.
"Sorry I was so angry," he mumbled, looking down. "I just- I don't want to lose another home." Eddie met Richie's gaze, his voice cracking. "I don't wanna be an orphan."
"You won't be, I promise. I won't let that happen," the curly-haired boy insisted, his eyes staring directly into Eddie's soul. "Now," he stood up, offering the smaller boy a hand. A tiny smile snuck its way onto Eddie's face as Richie pulled him to his feet. "Let's keep going."
"Ok." Eddie nodded. They walked back to the train station, hand in hand. Eddie studied the train schedule for a moment, frowning.
"What's wrong?"
"There's no more trains in the right direction tonight," he sighed. "So... we could try to get a place to stay, or try the bus? What do you think?"
"Why don't we try the bus? We can at least get closer to Boston that way," Richie suggested.
"Alright..."
When the boys arrived at the bus station, it was near deserted. Only a few stragglers were left. The bus schedule caught Richie's eye, the tall boy quickly scanning it.
"Eds, look! There's a bus leaving in 5 minutes to York! C'mon, let's go!" He exclaimed. Eddie sighed.
"That's not very far... is there anything that'll bring us even closer?" He questioned. York was in the southernmost part of Maine. They hadn't even made it out of the state yet.
"Not until tomorrow morning," Richie answered. "It's not far, but at least it's progress. But we have to go now, or we'll miss it." The smaller boy hesitated, then nodded. They ran to the ticket booth, paying for two tickets, and ran to catch the bus. It was rather easy to find seats together, considering it was nearly 11pm. The bus was mostly empty, a few seats here and there filled by people. Eddie and Richie headed straight to the back of the bus, with the thought that nobody would be watching them.
"Eds?" Richie pouted, a grin tugging at his lips. "Can I have a kiss?" The smaller boy rolled his eyes, pressing his lips to Richie's. The older boy decided to try something different, tapping his tongue to Eddie's lower lip. The brunette quickly pulled away, eyes wide.
"Richie!" He screeched quietly, keeping his voice low. "What are you doing?!" The curly-haired boy frowned, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
"I thought maybe we could try to go a bit further," he admitted. "Yknow, try something new?" Eddie thought for a moment, silently pondering his decision.
"You said you wanted to reach me, right?" He questioned, his voice barely above a whisper. Richie nodded in confirmation, raising an eyebrow. "Then teach me."
"Right now?" The taller boy asked incredulously.
"Right now," Eddie confirmed, a dark blush tinting his cheeks. Richie smirked, knowing this was going to be interesting.
"Ok, let's try." Their lips connected, Richie's tongue flicking. Eddie's lips parted immediately, granting access to the older boy. He greedily explored Eddie's mouth, enjoying the soft sounds escaping his lover. They pulled apart, gasping for breath, a string of saliva connecting their lips. Eddie was quick to wipe it away, pulling out a bottle of hand sanitizer from his bag.
"Oh Eds, you're so cute!" Richie cooed, pinching Eddie's flushed cheeks. The younger boy was quick to swat his hand away, eyebrows furrowed with annoyance.
"Don't call me that," Eddie muttered, scrubbing the hand sanitizer into his skin.
"Oh c'mon, you know you like it," Richie grinned. Eddie's face was bright red with embarrassment, and he could practically feel the heat radiating from his skin.
"Shut up, Richie," he mumbled, laying down over the curly-haired boy's lap. "I'm taking a nap, wake me when we get there." Richie nodded, slightly confused. Had Eddie not liked the French kiss? It sounded like he did, but Richie wasn't sure. His boyfriend- if he could call him that- seemed rather upset.
The older boy frowned, feeling hurt and confused. He looked down at the boy asleep in his lap, some of the hurt evaporating. Eddie was curled into Richie's stomach, fingers tangled into the fabric of his shirt. Richie sighed, a gentle smile snaking its way onto his face. Eddie looked so peaceful when he was asleep, soft snores escaping from his lips. Richie could only hope the whole trip could be this nice.
