CHAPTER TWENTY

… … … … … … … …

MCGARRETT HOUSE - JUNE 13, 2020 - 1200 HOURS

The last few days had been a flurry of activity. Catherine's parents had arrived from Texas, Mary and Joanie as well as Chin Ho, Abby, and Sara had flown in from California. Tani and Quinn had booted Steve out of the house first thing in the morning, so that Catherine could have the whole place to herself to get ready, while Kamekona began preparations for the reception outside.

"Knock, knock!" A familiar voice rang throughout the house. Catherine poked her head out of the bedroom and let out a squeal of excitement as she ran down the stairs to greet her friend. "You came!" She grinned.

"Of course I came!" Kono laughed, "You didn't think I was gonna miss out on YOUR wedding, did you? I mean, you flew halfway around the world for mine, so the least I could do was leave D.C. for a couple of days."

"Come on." Catherine grinned as she grabbed Kono's arms and dragged her up the stairs, "There are some people you need to meet!" She and Kono walked back into the bedroom, "Guys, this is-"

"Kono!" Tani exclaimed, "Your reputation precedes you." She grinned as she gave Kono a hug. "This is Quinn." She said as she motioned to the lady to her left who was busy trying to figure out how to attach a pin to a boutonniere. "Apparently it took two of us to fill your big shoes."

Catherine sat down at the vanity that Quinn had set up for her and continued to curl her hair while the other ladies got to know each other. Her eyes fell on the old photo of her and Steve laughing in her C.O.'s office aboard the Enterprise. Twenty years later... Over twenty years if you really think about it. Who would have imagined that this day would finally come?

… … ...

"Attention!" Commander Jameson's voice bellowed through the tiny room. "As you all know, Lieutenant Bryant is now overseeing the intel station in Virginia Beach. This is your new commanding officer, Lieutenant McGarrett." He barked as he motioned to the stud of a man to his right. "Any questions? No? Good." Without another word, Jameson turned and exited.

Catherine watched as her new C.O. sat down at his station and began thumbing through the stack of assignments that Bryant had left. Their eyes met for a split second before she turned her back to him and continued scanning the satellite imagery that had been taunting her in her sleep.

… … ...

"Damn... If looks could kill that screen would be dead." A voice behind her chuckled quietly.

Catherine rolled her eyes, "Unfortunately the military hasn't perfected that technology yet." She felt the person move closer, and hover over her shoulder. Catherine turned her head to see who the owner of that sarcastic comment was when her eye caught sight of the name emblazoned on his BDUs. MCGARRETT. "Shit." She muttered when she realized her faux pas. "Um, Sir. I apologize for my previous comment." She stammered as she turned to face him, fear and embarrassment pulsed through her veins. "I didn't know it was you, sir."

Steve's face was stone cold as he allowed her to squirm in the awkwardness of her conduct. His eyes narrowed as he studied the name written across her fatigues, "Rollins."

"Sir, I'm sorry for how rude I was…." Catherine began to apologize again, but stopped when she saw his stern face turn into a dopey half-cocked grin.

Steve chuckled and handed her a cup of coffee, "You know your shift ended two hours ago, right?" He asked as he motioned around the empty duty station.

Catherine nodded, "I know, sir, I just- it's been three days and I haven't been able to finish this project and I don't think I'll be able to sleep until it's done." She admitted.

Steve nodded thoughtfully for a moment before rolling another chair to her side and sitting down beside her. "Alright. What are we looking for?"

"Sir?" Catherine questioned.

"Steve. Call me Steve." He smiled as he scanned the images on her screen. "Or McGarrett….If you'd like." He extended his hand to her.

Catherine laughed quietly, "Lieutenant McGarrett." She replied, addressing him respectfully.

"Do you have a first name that goes with Rollins?" Steve asked as he took a long sip of the coffee he had brought for himself.

"Catherine." She responded sweetly as she held the warm coffee in her hands.

"Catherine." He repeated with a soft smile. "I like that." Steve turned back to the screen. "So what are we looking for, Catherine?"

"A faction of the Taliban are rumored to have a weapons cache and hideout somewhere in the Korangal Valley in Afghanistan… I haven't been able to find it and there's been a SEAL team waiting to move on the location for three days…" She sighed in frustration. "I can't make them sit and wait any longer, but I'm not gonna give them bad intel and get them injured or worse."

Steve nodded as he rested his arm across the back of her chair and grinned, "Then let's get to work, Rollins."

… … …

The fluffy powder brush swept over Catherine's cheeks as Kono dusted a light tracing of blush across her face. "Boss is gonna die when he sees you in that dress." She grinned.

"I hope not!" Catherine giggled nervously.

"I mean, yes, I know he's seen you in a lot less, but there's something different about your man seeing you in a wedding dress for the first time." Kono replied wistfully.

Catherine laughed, "I just hope he likes it is all…"

Kono stopped doing her makeup and held the brush away from Catherine's face. "Are you serious? He would die for you, Cath!" She laughed as she resumed her duty as makeup artist. "That man would throw himself in front of a bus just to get you to give him the time of day."

… … …

"Go away, Chad!" Catherine yelled, storming out of the bar "You're the last person on earth that I want to see, much less speak to, right now."

Chad stumbled after her, "Catherine, listen to me! I don't wanna fight, I just wanna talk to you!"

"I'm done talking! Leave me the hell alone!" Catherine screamed as she jogged to her car.

He wasn't taking 'no' for an answer. "It's not what you think! It didn't mean anything, Catherine! It was one fucking kiss! I was drunk - I don't even know her name! Who gives a shit?!"

Catherine turned to face him as she smacked him clean across the face. "I do! I give a shit, Chad! This is the exact reason I don't date guys in the military!"

Chad pressed his hand against his jaw to relieve the stinging sensation left by her slap. "You little bitch." He growled as he lunged towards her.

Catherine braced herself against the car and ducked under his swinging arm, preparing herself for the second blow that she knew would connect with her body. After all, you don't spar with your boyfriend in a boxing ring for months and not learn a thing or two about how he fights. But the punch never came.

"What the hell?" Chad's body lurched away from her in an instant and collided with the hood of another car.

"GET OFF OF HER!" Steve's voice was a sinister threat to the man who was built like a tank. Chad pushed off of the car and swung his fist in Steve's general direction, but he was so drunk, he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Steve grabbed his arm, twisted it behind his back, and shoved him into the car again. "I'm giving you one more chance before I beat you into the asphalt." Steve spat. His whisper was terrifying. "She told you to get lost."

Chad let out a contemptuous laugh as he stumbled away. "I see how it is." A sadistic smile came across his face, "I can't screw up and kiss another girl when I'm drunk, but you run off to your ship and fuck your C.O. when I'm not around." Chad staggered away from the scene. Even in his drunken state, he had the sense to not cross Steve again.

"What the hell is the matter with you?!" Catherine yelled as Steve took a step towards her.

Steve put his hands up defensively, "Come again? Pretty sure the good samaritan is owed a 'thanks for saving my ass from my piece of shit ex, McGarrett'."

"Excuse me, did I lose a glass slipper?" Catherine snapped.

Steve's brow furrowed, "A what?"

"A glass slipper." She repeated. "Do I look like Cinderella to you? Do I look like a damsel in distress who needs to be saved? I didn't need your help, McGarrett! I was fine. I had it handled!"

He took a few steps back and pointed to the bar, "I was just having a drink with a couple buddies…" Steve began defensively. "I saw you and that shit-stain get into it and watched you walk out and just wanted to make sure that you were okay."

Catherine gritted her teeth. She didn't know if the adrenaline was from the fight and relief of finally getting rid of her ex, or from the scent of his cologne, but damn, he smelled good.

"I know you don't need saving, Cath." Steve's tone softened. "But even superheroes need a sidekick." He turned to walk back into the bar, "See you Monday, Rollins."

… … …

WILLIAMS RESIDENCE - JUNE 13, 2020 - 1300 HOURS

"T-1 hour till go time." Danny called out through the house. He poked his head into the room where Steve was pulling his dress whites out of the garment bag that Catherine had hung them in. "You in your monkey suit yet? We gotta leave soon."

"Workin' on it, buddy." Steve grinned as he laid each piece of the suit on the bed. "What do you think: cutlass or no?"

Danny chuckled, "Are you, uh, are you actually serious? Why would you not bring an additional weapon to your wedding ceremony? That's, uh, that's classic you, babe." He grinned as he picked up the thin silver blade.

Steve snatched it out of his hands, "You'll poke your eye out."

"What, do you think I'm five? I carry a gun for a living, I think I can handle a sword." Danny argued.

"It's not called a sword, it's called a cutlass. Now out." Steve demanded as his thoughts returned to getting into his dress whites.

Danny took the hint and turned to leave, but not before reminding Steve of the bottle of whiskey he kept hidden in the nightstand.

Steve sauntered over and pulled out the bottle, pouring himself a shot and knocking it back to help calm his nerves.

… … …

"Better watch yourself, Freddie." Steve grinned as he threw another dollar on the pile of bills they had stuffed in the pocket of the pool table. "That pot is all mine tonight." He aimed his pool stick towards the cue ball and sent three of his careening into the pockets.

Freddie Hart grinned, "Lucky shot, but here comes my secret weapon now." He chuckled as a dark haired lady walked through the smoke filled bar.

"What are you talking about?" Steve rolled his eyes as he turned to see what Freddie was looking at. "Shit. No. You called Catherine? Why the fuck would you do that, man?"

"Hey, boys!"Catherine smiled, "Freddie, you okay? What's going on? You said it was, and I quote, "An urgent matter of national security"." She glanced around, "A game of pool doesn't exactly scream 'urgent'."

Freddie grinned ear-to-ear, "I actually just said it's a matter of 'security' - as in, my financial security." He chuckled as he looked at Steve's fuming expression. If they had been in a cartoon, you'd see smoke coming out of his ears. "Steve never plays well when you're around."

Catherine looked over to see Steve huffing angrily as he downed his glass of whiskey. "Oh, I, uh… I can go…" She glanced around awkwardly as the other members of their SEAL team crowded into the tiny bar in Coronado to watch the stand-off between Freddie Hart and Steve McGarrett.

Steve slammed his glass down and aimed his pool stick against the cue ball for his next shot. A lingering scent of coconut and vanilla wafted through the air. His eyes flickered over to the stunning lieutenant who was standing beside his best friend. Rolling his eyes, he stood back up and dropped his pool stick onto the green felt of the table. "Fuck, just take it, Hart." He rolled his eyes and pointed to the prize money.

The SEALs cheered Freddie on in his victory. Even though he may not have beaten the great Steve McGarrett fair and square, he did outsmart him, and that counted for something. Freddie's arm slung around Catherine's shoulders as he pulled her over to where Steve was sulking. "I like her. Can we keep her?" His chipper voice carried over the noisy bar.

"Yeah! Let's keep her around!" Martinez joked, "Can we Steve?"

Steve rolled his eyes as Catherine slid in to sit beside him, "She's not a puppy."

Freddie grinned, continuing the charade, with the other members of their team joining in. "Please, please pleaaaaaasseeeeee!"

Steve huffed indignantly, "Fine." He grumbled, looking over at the beautiful troublemaker beside him. A smile flickered across his face, "I guess we'll keep her."

… … …

"Awwww, man." Steve groaned. "I shoulda had more than one shot of whiskey."

Danny shook his head as the Camaro sped down the road towards Pearl Harbor. "Nope. For starters, you told me to drive because you were nervous, so that's good decision making on your part. Second, I'm driving. Because as much as I'm a cynical son of a bitch, you not making it to that chapel would be the worst mistake of your life. Hence, good decision making on my part. And today is a day for making good decisions."

Steve looked over at his partner in the driver's seat, "Thanks, man."

"Besides, Catherine would kill us both if we were even a second late." Danny grinned.

Steve chuckled, "That she would." He pinched the bridge of his nose with his fingers, "She'd uh, she wouldn't say anything in the moment, but she'd get that little line on her forehead that tells me when she's mad." He laughed

Danny smirked, "Trust me, a few years of marriage, and that line will become a permanent wrinkle on her face after she realizes that she said yes to spending the rest of her life with the likes of you." He laughed.

… … …

"Get in!" Steve shoved Catherine into the tiny closet and hopped in after her, closing the door quickly. As footsteps approached, and the voices became louder, they both suddenly became acutely aware of the fact that in order to escape being caught by the brass in a potentially compromising position, they had, in fact, gotten into an even more compromising position. Shoved together in a broom closet, to be exact.

Catherine's unit had thrown a party to celebrate Steve leaving for BUD/s, and once the party died down, he and Catherine had slipped away to talk. Technically he wasn't her C.O. anymore. Technically they weren't even coworkers anymore since his orders on board the Enterprise had ended a few hours earlier. Technically, they could still get in a lot of trouble for hiding in a broom closet.

Catherine's face flushed with heat as she felt Steve's arm wrap around her waist. She could feel the warmth of his breath trailing down the back of her neck. "Steve." She whispered as the footsteps seemingly disappeared.

Steve shook his head. "Not yet."

"You're off duty, but if they catch me I could get court martialed!" She protested in a whisper. Steve held up all five fingers in front of her face. He mouthed 'five minutes' before putting his finger to his lips. Catherine frowned.

Steve held in a laugh as that little line on her forehead showed up. It only appeared when she was either completely focused or totally angry. He knew it was the latter, but it still made him smile. Everything about her made him smile.

Catherine counted the minutes in her head before she opened her mouth to say anything again, but what came out was a low whisper. "Steve." She quietly pleaded.

Steve quickly muffled her words by cupping his palm over her mouth. "Never say my name like that again." He growled.

Her eyes narrowed as she pulled his hand off of her mouth. Sparks flew between them as the heat in the closet intensified. "Or what."

Steve's arm remained around her waist. He felt himself pull her closer. The heat from her body radiated against him. "Or I won't be able to control myself." He whispered.

… … …

"You look beautiful, sweetheart." Admiral Rollins beamed as he wiped the tears out of his eyes and hugged his daughter in the back of the chapel. "Don't be nervous." He said as he squeezed her hands.

Catherine peered through the window of the door while remaining out of sight. The fleeting glance she had of Steve in his dress whites standing at the front of the chapel was enough to make her weak in the knees. Her thoughts were interrupted by her dad tapping her shoulder. She turned to see that he had pulled a flask out of the pocket of his dress blues. A quiet laugh escaped her lips as she took the flask from him, exhaled, and choked down a shot. "Seriously, dad? Tequila?!" She laughed. "What happened to Johnny Walker Black? That's always been your drink."

The Admiral chuckled as he slipped the flask back in his pocket, "Yeah, but for some reason that I probably don't want to know about, tequila's always been yours."

Catherine grinned, "You're right. You don't wanna know."

… … …

"Hey, you made it!" Steve's lopsided grin greeted her as she pushed through the crowd in their favorite dive bar in Coronado.

"I told you I'd be here as soon as we were allowed to disembark." Catherine laughed as she swung her legs around and sat on the barstool beside him. "Just had to change into my civvies first. How's my favorite SEAL?"

Steve nodded, "Good." He grinned as he took in the sight of her tattered denim shorts and long, bare legs. "Cath, this is, uh, Harrington. Billy Harrington." He pointed to the gentleman to his right.

"Catherine Rollins." She introduced herself, "Nice to meet you." She smiled as she shook Billy's hand. The bartender slid two shots of tequila to Steve and Billy. Catherine frowned playfully, "What? Can't a girl get a drink around here?"

"You want one?" Billy asked before flagging down the bartender.

Steve's hand shot up in protest of Billy's suggestion. "Not on my watch." He chuckled. "Can't have it on my conscience that I corrupted the, uh… nicest... girl in the Navy."

Catherine rolled her eyes, "Steve, I've done shots before."

"So she's decent?" Billy asked, looking at Steve.

Steve nodded and shrugged as he talked directly to Billy, "She's too decent."

"Ah, I see." Billy smirked.

"Excuse me! What's with all the closed captioning?! I'm right here!" Catherine interjected. "And I am not uptight, thank you very much."

Steve's eyebrows raised as a devilishly innocent smile crossed his lips, "I never said you were uptight, Rollins."

"You said I was decent. That's your way of saying that I don't know how to have a good time." Catherine contested.

Billy handed her a lime wedge. "Alright then. Prove it. Have a good time. Help my boy out with his shot." He said as he slid Steve one of the shot glasses.

"Fine." Catherine's jaw clenched. She was never one to back down from a challenge.

Steve snatched the lime wedge out of her hand. "No."

Catherine gave him a look that said not to test her resolve. "Yes."

Steve's eyes searched her face as Billy grinned at the sight of their stand-off. "You sure about this?" Steve asked. Catherine nodded stubbornly. He shrugged as he stood up, taking a step towards her. His hand gently spread her knees apart as he moved to stand in between her legs. "Can't say I didn't warn you." He smirked before turning to clink his shot glass against Billy's. "Bite." He demanded, holding the lime out to her.

"Excuse me?" Catherine questioned.

"Are you decent?" A mixture of intrigue and arousal danced through his eyes.

Catherine's lips curled up into a sultry grin as she bit down into the lime wedge that he held out to her. Steve knocked back the shot of tequila and simultaneously pulled the lime wedge out of her mouth.

Everything happened so quickly that Catherine didn't even have time to lick the drips of lime juice off of her lips.

But he did.

Steve's hand had found its way to the back of her neck and held her head steady as his tongue traced along her lips. He caught the drip of juice off of her bottom lip and gave it a gentle bite with his teeth. The taste of tequila and lime lingered in their breath as he moved his lips away from hers.

Catherine's chest rose and fell heavily as electricity pulsed between them. Steve's eyes darted across her face to gauge her reaction. "Well." His satisfied, husky whisper only increased the fire burning inside of her. His hand slid up the slide of her thigh. "You're not as decent as I thought."

Catherine picked up the shot that the bartender had left for her. "Now the question is…" She began as she held out the lime to him, "How decent are you?"

… … …

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR CHAPEL - JUNE 13, 2020 - 1400 HOURS

Steve knew the music was playing, but he couldn't hear anything except the pounding of his own heartbeat in his ears. He shifted nervously between his feet, moving his weight from one foot to the other. His eyes scanned the crowd as he waited rather impatiently. Just when he thought he couldn't wait another second, the Navy chaplain motioned for their guests to rise as the back doors of the chapel swung open.

… … …

MILITARY TRANSPORT TO MOROCCO | HOUR 2

"I should have been there." She whispered, still reeling from the information he had dropped on her. The plane crash… the liver transplant… he had nearly died. He should've died.

"Cath, there was nothing you could have done." He chuckled, "It was me and Danny at 30,000 feet... And I was unconscious for most of it."

Catherine shook her head, "I wish I had been there." She looked up at him teary eyed.

"You were." Steve said as he stared at the wall.

"What?" Catherine turned her head quickly to look at him. "What are you talking about?"

Steve sighed and looked down at his shoes. "You were with me." He rubbed the heels of his hands across his eyes. Exhaustion was creeping up on him.

"I- I don't understand." Catherine replied quietly, searching his face for answers.

"I thought I was dead." Steve began stoically, "I saw Freddie. We were in Coronado. I was standing beside him on the beach… We were- we were back in BUD/S." Steve paused when he got choked up. "And then I saw you." He continued softly, glancing over at her. He looked back at the wall and smiled wistfully, "There you were. Standing where our Master Chief would stand. "I kept telling you I couldn't do it anymore… That I was done... That I was too tired." He chuckled. "You told Freddie that he was finished… and that he could go." Steve braced his elbows on top of his knees and rested his forehead on his hands. "I watched him disappear." Tears brimmed in his eyes, "I kept begging and begging for him to come back, but he didn't. He was gone." Steve took a deep breath. "Then I looked back at you- you were... God, Cath, you were beautiful." He regretted saying that for a moment before shrugging it off. "You were standing there on that beach in all white… looking like an angel or somethin'." He chewed on his lip before continuing, "I asked if I could go with Freddie and you told me it wasn't time yet. That I had more to do." He glanced over and saw Catherine smile softly. "I asked again. Told you I was too tired to keep going…" He sighed, "I said I wanted to go with Freddie." Steve leaned back against the interior of the plane, "You told me that Freddie had completed his mission and had gone home. Then you said that mine wasn't over yet."

Catherine laughed quietly, "Even in your dreams I'm a hard-ass."

Steve chuckled, "Something like that." He smiled kindly at her, "Then you recited the SEAL creed to me."

Catherine laughed quietly. While she wasn't a SEAL, she had spent enough time around him and his team to know it by heart. "I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time- " Her voice quivered as a tear ran down her cheek.

"I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission." Steve finished for her. He looked down at his hands. "You made me say it three times…" His voice trailed off. "And then you walked up and kissed me. Then you said, 'I'll see you soon, Sailor.' and then you just walked down the beach… and left."

Steve took a deep breath to try and shake off the emotions that had bubbled up. "You were my angel." He whispered.

… … …

"Holy shit." Steve whispered as his gaze fell on his bride. The chaplain's eyes darted towards him in a scolding manner, but reprimanding Steve for swearing in a place of worship would have to wait.

Catherine floated down the aisle, a vision in white. Her father grinned proudly as he escorted his daughter through the chapel. Steve took a step down from the platform and shook Admiral Rollin's hand before pulling the old man in for a hug.

"Take care of my baby girl, Steve." The typically stern Admiral choked out.

Steve nodded as Mr. Rollins gave his daughter a kiss on the cheek and turned to sit beside his wife. Steve turned back to Catherine and offered his hand. The words she had said after surprising him on the plane came back into his mind, "You ready?" He grinned.

Catherine smiled with tears in her eyes, "Yeah."

… … …

Catherine's chest rose and fell heavily as electricity pulsed between them. Steve's eyes darted across her face to gauge her reaction. "Well." His husky whisper only increased the fire burning inside of her. His hand slid up the slide of her thigh. "You're not as decent as I thought."

Catherine picked up the shot that the bartender had left for her. "Now the question is…" She began as she held out the lime to him, "How decent are you?"

Steve grinned as he bit into the lime. Catherine downed the shot of tequila as Steve tossed the lime onto the bar. His hands pulled her against him as his lips met hers. Catherine's tongue dipped in between his parted lips, tantalizing him before pulling away. Steve grinned against her mouth. Maybe it was the tequila, but the next words that he said were, "Girl, I'ma marry you."

… … …

"I, Steven John McGarrett, take you, Catherine Ann Rollins, to be my wife. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish so long as we both shall live."

"I, Catherine Ann Rollins, take you, Steven John McGarrett, to be my husband. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish so long as we both shall live."

Steve and Catherine stood facing each other, holding hands as Danny and Mary walked forward to give the rings to the chaplain.

"Cath?" Steve's voice was barely a whisper as he took her ring from the chaplain.

Catherine reached for Steve's ring. "Yeah?"

"Remember that night in Coronado with Billy? The tequila?"

Catherine nodded.

The chaplain cleared his throat to regain their attention. "Catherine, if you'll repeat after me."

Catherine waited for the chaplain to finish before reciting his prompt. "With this ring, I thee wed." She beamed as she slid the smooth ring on his left hand.

Steve held her ring out, just on the tip of her left ring finger. "With this ring, I thee wed." He slid the diamond band against the ring his mother had left for him.

"By the power vested in me by the United States Navy and the State of Hawaii, I now pronounce you man and wife." The chaplain grinned, "Steve, you may FINALLY kiss your bride!"

In front of all of their cheering friends and family, Steve dipped Catherine back and kissed her. The biggest grin crossed his face as he pulled her up and kissed her again, "Girl, I told you I was gonna marry you."

AUTHOR'S NOTE

Eeeeeep! Wedding! Yay! All the feels!

1. This is the Wedding Part 1, the next chapter will have the rest of the festivities.

2. The next chapter will likely be posted Wednesday or Thursday this week as I am travelling for work A LOT the next few days and am not sure when I'll have time to sit and write chapter 21.

3. I hope all of the flashbacks and flash-forwards (to the present moment) weren't too confusing. Pro-tip: Flashbacks in my stories are always in italics!

4. When I thought about what I wanted their wedding ceremony chapter to look like, I really did think about what the creators and writers may have thought about showing us on our televisions. I would have hoped that they would have honored Steve and Catherine's long history by giving us glimpses into how they became McRoll. I hope I did Steve and Catherine justice!

5. REVIEWS! Please, please tell me what you thought of this chapter! ALSO, who do you want to see make an appearance at Steve and Catherine's wedding reception in chapter 21? Let me know!

I love you all so much!

XO,
