Chapter 18

And another one, two more to go :)

Matt, Kelly and Shay paced in the hospital lobby. Voight had contacted Mouse shortly after his team had breached the house.

Thought he said Gabby was fine and she was just coming to med to be examined. Matt was worried something had happened, had Luke done something to her?Had she been hurt in the take down? Matt hadn't even asked if Luke was dead or alive, he was just so eager to get to Gabby.

"She'll be ok Matt." Shay tried to assure him, and herself. "Voight wouldn't have said she was fine if she wasn't."

In the past six years the nature of the detective and Matt's relationship changed drastically. In the beginning they wanted to kill each other, but as time went on they learned to tolerate each other and even turned into allies when the situation called for it.

"There they are." Kelly pointed out as a ambulance pulled up with no sirens, three dark suvs pulling up behind it.

Matt quickened his paces, stopping once he was beside the ambulance. He watched as the doors opened and a paramedic, jumped down, closing the door behind him.

Where the hell is Gabby? Before he had the chance to voice his question he heard her behind him.

"Matt!"

The man in questioned turned on his heels. Gabby had gotten out of one of the police SUVS. She was still wearing a tanktop and leggings that she had worn to bed the night before. Despite how they must have tried to whip the blood from her skin, he could still see smears of it and dark stains on her top. No matter how well it was trying to hid behind a dark leather jacket.

"Gabby." He pulled her into a hug.

She wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling herself tight into his chest. They both inhaled, taking each other in. After a couple minutes, Matt pulled away but only because he wanted to check her out. He was pretty sure the blood wasn't hers, if it was she would probably have ridden in the ambulance.

"I'm ok." She reassured him with a small smile.

Shay butted in then, knowing this might be the only time.

"Don't get kidnapped again. Scared the hell out of me." Gabby chuckled.

"Yeah, i'll work on that."

Kelly pulled her in next, whispering in her ear that he was glad she came back safe.

Once she was released, Gabby went back to Matt, cuddling into his side.

"Come on sis, we have to go get that head checked out. I already called Dr Rhoads is in there waiting."

Gabby nodded, letting herself be lead into the hospital by Matt. Her friends and brother following closely behind.

Two hours later, she had a clean bill of health and was sent home with a couple pain killers to help with the headaches. While her head did hurt, all Gabby was really thinking of was a shower.

Matt was quiet on the way home, his hand remained clasped in hers sitting on his lap as he drove. This truck was in evidence until all the paper work was done on Gabby's case. So he had Shay and Severide leave and bring him Gabby's jeep, while she was in getting her CT.

When it was only him and Antonio left in the small waiting room, he asked for all the details of what went down.

"We don't have Gabby's side of the story yet. I'll come by the house tomorrow and get her statement." He continued to tell Matt what he saw.

Matt's fist balled up and remained balled up for most of the recount. He couldn't believe what a loon this guy had turned out to be and how closed he had really come to loosing Gabby.

Still wrapped in her brothers jacket, Matt helped Gabby into the house, hand on her back. Even though she didn't really need it, he wanted to be close and she let him

"Are you hungry? I can cook us up something or we could order something in?"

"Smells like gasoline in here." Gabby scrunched her nose in disgust.

Matt nodded looking around, the police hadn't cleaned up the gasoline from earlier. It hadn't even been on his mind, he should have come home and cleaned this instead of sitting around at the police station.

"Why don't you go take a shower, I'll get this cleaned up and then I'll whip up some pasta or-"

Gabby shook her head, "Come with me, we'll clean it later."

"We shouldn't let it sit." Gabby took his hand.

"Leave it."

The shower was full of steam, Gabby wanted to get all the blood off her face, chest and hair.

Matt stood behind her scrubbing shampoo into her brown locks. While he did he could help the way his eyes drifted over her. He checked every inch of caramel skin for bruising or finger prints.

To his relief he didn't find any on her back. Her hip though had a large bruise. Unconsciously, Matt's fingers dropped to the discoloured skin, his fingers swept over her hip lightly.

Gabby turned, looking up at the worry on his face.

"It's nothing, matches the goose egg on my head."

Matt's eyes flashed in anger, glued to her hip. He felt her soft hands slide onto his cheeks.

"Baby, look at me." After a moment he did. "He didn't hurt me."

His eyes glared at her like he didn't believe her. "Antonio told me what happened."

"No-"

"He said that guy raised a knife over your chest when the police cornered him."

Gabby pulled on his neck, till his forehead met hers. The warm water hung ofF their eye lashes like little due drops.

"I saw it in his eyes Matt. He was ready to die, he wanted them to shoot him." She started to shake. "He- I think he really thought he was in love with me."

Matt pulled her closer to him, "If he had hurt you-"

"He didn't hurt me Matt. You're just going to have to trust me on that."

Letting her words bring him solace, Matt gave her a peek on the lips and then kissed her cheek. If the shadows under her eyes were any indication, Gabby hadn't gotten much sleep.

When they were all washed up and slipped into bed, Gabby was out like a light. Matt on the other hand couldn't find sleep. He stayed up all night with her cuddled into his chest.

.

"Chief will understand if you want to take shift off."

"I know he would, but I don't need a shift off. I'm all good. The last thing CPD needs from me is my account of what happened for their files. Antonio is bringing over those papers today, so I'm all good."

"Okay." Matt receded. "If that's what you want."

"It is."

Eighteen hours later they were back at house 51. The guys gave her a warm welcome, but she wouldn't expect anything less from her family at 51.
