Chapter 17: ANNIE I am so thankful that I had thought to bring my grandmother's glasses into the arena. Convincing the peacekeepers that they are essential for me to see was a long conversation, ending with them just getting annoyed at my persistence and giving in, but it paid off. The glasses bring me comfort in the evening now, however I do miss Finnick terribly. I know I won't alone survive the games, but with Finnick, I would've come close. Thoughts of my love warm my spirit, even while shivering in the dropping temperatures. I can use the glasses to start a fire for warmth and cook something! My stomach growls in agreement. I have to find something to eat and drink, and soon. My throat is scratchy and my belly is empty after two days in the arena. I continue walking along in the shadows of the cacti and dunes. Soon, I see a little shrub! It is terribly dry - and it's cracking, but the roots might be a source for water. I dig around the plant a bit, getting sand under my nails. Once it becomes looser, I pull the shrub out of the ground. At the bottom of the hole I just made, I see a spot of clumped sand. Wet sand? I wonder, and digging further, I discover more. After about 30 minutes of intense nudging and digging, I have a collection of damp sand. I might sift and boil it down to purify later, once I start a fire. The sun is starting to go down and I have to hurry - I need the sun for my fire. I start to pick up dry cactus branches, line my pit with sandy rocks, and build a little tipi-pile for my flame. Taking the glasses in one hand and using the other to shade my eyes from the sun, I focus the lens onto the pile. Hiss. The brown pile smokes, and slowly a flame grows. Quickly, adding more dry material to the fire, I start to feel satisfied. The intensity of the sun is going down (I am very pale and burn easily, so the sun is a huge threat ) and I have a water source. I suddenly notice all of these critters around me. Smoke will be good for keeping away the bugs as well, I mentally add to the list of fire advantages. The bugs are getting annoying, and I am growing hungry. I see a snake slither past. Ugh, I've always hated snakes - why do they have to be around here? Wait! Snake... Quickly, in one well-practiced move, I grab the snake's tail and twist it into a fatal knot, crushing it's spinal cord. Then I throw the dead snake aside and weave a platform of some sorts out of cactus pricks, rubbing it with the damp sand to keep it flame-resistant. After untangling the dead snake and lathering it in more damp sand (to give it moisture - food and water in one!), I lay it on the cooking mat and place it over the fire, just half an inch away from the highest flame. Fire crackling and snake aroma arising, I feel safe for the first time since the reaping. About 15 minutes later my meal is ready. Rubbing off the sand, then peeling off skin, I take a big bite of it's head. Delicious and tender. Take that, you annoying snake. After eating myself crazy (which admittedly I needed), I lay down next to the fire - feeling satisfied both of hunger and thirst for the time being. Tonight, I sleep soundly.
