Chapter 16

Kate had come home to a very quiet Alexis. Even through the dinner that Kate had made for them, then even past working on her Captain's exam, she'd said almost nothing.

Now they were both naked, lying in bed, and wrapped up in each other as was the norm for them. "Something happen today? You've been unusually quiet." They had a deal that they would talk to each other. Kate had agreed even if it was testing her ability to do just that. That and not tell a lie. It was a little new for her.

"I went to see Dad." Alexis wasn't sure she had done any good or if she'd caused more harm.

"I take it didn't go well?" If Alexis was this quiet after talking to Castle it must have been really bad.

"I don't know, Kate! I just don't know. I did all the talking and I'm not sure it was all good. You remember that article I showed him and left behind?"

"Vividly. I take it he fought back?" It didn't sound like Castle but then again, what did she know?

"No, he didn't. Didn't even say a word. He didn't apologize, either. I asked him if he knew of a word that would describe his actions if he was a woman instead of a man." That was where Alexis wondered if she had gone too far.

"Oh, wow!" Kate could only think of one word and it wasn't a good one.

"I even accused him of being one. Not one of my finer hours," Alexis admitted.

"Ah, Lex." Kate held her a little tighter and kissed her head.

"There's more. I went with Henry – that's Dad's lawyer – to see Gina. Kate loosened her hold and looked down at Alexis, wondering why she'd done that.

"Gina's offered to review a book Dad writes and publish it if she likes it. But…her stipulation was that Dad has to keep the playboy image. It was that or nothing."

"Does Castle even have something written to give to her?" Kate had never liked Castle's tabloid exploits. It only confirmed what she thought of him.

"No. We also went to a different publisher. A smaller one. They've agreed to publish any book Dad brings them but for less money than he's used to. Under one condition: he has to drop the playboy image. If he doesn't while they have a contract with him, they would sue him for every penny they could get out of him. It might ruin Dad financially. Permanently. They're a clean company and want to keep it that way."

"You mean religious and strict? That doesn't sound like Castle, no offense." Kate wasn't sure that Castle had it in him to do that.

"In a way it's just like him. However, under Gina and Paula, it's not. I guess the question is what does he want to be? Truly?" Alexis didn't really know. She knew what she wanted him to do and be, but did that match what her father saw himself being and doing?

"Go to sleep. Everything will be different in the morning. At least it is usually." Kate kissed her and felt Alexis kiss her back. They settled in to sleep without making love to each other.

One week later

"Yes sir, thank you, sir!" Kate watched the Police Commissioner leave her office. She almost couldn't believe it. She was halfway between laughing and crying.

Then suddenly Kevin and Javi were in her doorway. "What did he say?" Javi was going to stay at the 12th no matter what. Kevin was more on the fence. He had other options that he might take.

Except before Kate could say anything, Ann crashed into both of them. "What did he say?" She so wanted Kate to be Captain. It meant the Precinct was going to get better and be the top Precinct yet again.

"I passed my Captain's exam! Even got the highest marks of anyone taking the exam so far." Kate was sure it was all due to Alexis. That young lady was smart and knew how to study.

"And?" the three of them almost said simultaneously. Then Roz crashed into the back of Ann. "What did he say?" Word that the Police Commissioner had just left her office had spread like wildfire.

"I'm officially Captain of the 12th Precinct." Kate didn't know what else to say.

"Yes!" Ann and Roz began hugging each other. They got to keep their jobs and begin liking it again!

"Permission to get a six pack, Captain, and celebrate," Javi asked her.

"Granted. Just make it the good stuff. None of that local swill we call beer." Kate granted it since she was in a celebratory mood as well. Besides, she could allow it now. She was Captain!

"Yes, Captain!" Javi ran out of her office and down the stairs.

Kate looked at the other three who were all looking at her. "Okay, go on. In for a penny, in for a pound." She knew what those three were thinking. She watched all three of them race down the stairs after Javi.

Kate pulled out her phone.

Kate hadn't gotten an answer by the time those four were back and everyone on the 4th floor had a beer in hand. "To our new Captain. Long live the 12th!" Kevin raised his bottle, bottles were clinked together, and everyone drank.

"And my first action as Captain is to violate the no alcohol rule." Kate shook her head.

"What alcohol? I don't see any alcohol." Javi put his bottle behind his back and in seconds so had everyone else. Except Kate.

"Just drink faster and throw these bottles in the trash out back before someone notices," Kate ordered and chugged hers down. She put her now empty bottle down. Then her phone beeped at her.

"Wow, that must have been some text. That's quite the blush you've got going," Ann noted and grinned.

"It's the beer," Kate countered.

"After just one bottle? It was strong, but not that strong. I've see you drink before," Ann fired back.

"Okay, okay, you've had your fun. Get these bottles in the trash out back and get back to work before the mayor shows up and gets us all in trouble." Kate looked at her phone as she retreated to her desk with a smile on her face. Knowing Alexis she really did mean sex all night. No sleep, just lots and lots of sex.

Homicide hadn't caught a case today but that didn't mean New York City was asleep. It was anything but. Robbery had two new cases. Vice was going out tonight and still another division was talking to the FBI about a drug raid somewhere. This city never really did sleep.

Kate was just packing up to go home and celebrate with Alexis when a man showed up. He was here to paint her name on the door. He had even just finished handing her the new name plate that went on her desk.

CAPTAIN BECKETT

Now she just had to make sure she was up to the job. Going from an official Homicide Detective to an official Captain of an entire Precinct was another. Granted years ago she had considered the idea. That was before she became a detective. Just being made Detective by Roy had been a big step.

And as Captain she had some empty desks to fill. If she had the budget for it. That was one more thing she had learned. Everything they did in this Precinct had a price. From the paper, folders, pens, pencils, to more items than she cared to think about. It all came out of the budget that she had no to little control over.

Worse, they were still in the cellar and so long as they stayed there she was betting her budget wasn't going to get any better.

Kate opened the door to her, their, apartment and was immediately greeted by Alexis. "Captain Beckett." Alexis saluted her. "Cadet Rodgers at your service."

"Not you too? Did Javi put you up to this?" Kate didn't think anyone at the Precinct knew for a fact that they were lovers. But then again they were detectives.

"I can come up with ideas on my own, thank you very much," Alexis fake pouted then smiled wide. "So when do we start the orgy?" Alexis was ready now.

"Technically an orgy involves several people, not just two. And if you have I'm kicking you out right now," Kate informed her.

"DAMN! I knew I forgot something." Alexis walked up to Kate and kissed her soundly. "Too many clothes," Alexis muttered as she got to work on Kate's buttons.

Kate had no idea what time it was. They'd already done damn near everything Alexis knew anything about. They had cleaned and washed the dildos after fucking each other in the pussy and ass. "I need food. I'm starving," Kate announced.

"Cut that out. I'm Kate to you and don't you forget it." Kate poked her as she got up to go cook something.

"Even after I start working for you?" Now Alexis wasn't fake pouting. "I thought you loved me." Now she was fake pouting.

"You might end up at the 18th. I know that one sergeant was going to make sure his captain knew about you." Kate kept walking.

"You don't want me." Alexis was continuing to fake pout. At least until Kate agreed to ask for her to work out of the 12th Precinct.

"Oh, I want you all right. Make no mistake about that." Kate meant to make love to her some more before finally trying to get some sleep.

It was quick. It was simple. It was food. "You really want to come work under me at the 12th?" Kate wasn't sure she could even get her. The 12th was still down in this bottomless hole. She wasn't likely to get someone from the Academy that was first in her class.

"I don't want to be anywhere else. And being under you suits me just fine. I'll put some pillows under my head so I can reach you." Alexis grinned at her.

"I've created a monster," Kate fake moaned this time.

"A very pretty and sexy monster who only has eyes for you." Alexis batted her eyelashes at Kate.

"Eat your dinner. I want to taste you. You're my dessert." Alexis smiled back at her.

Alexis always left before her because she had so far to go. This morning, Alexis woke her up and kissed her.

"Has your dad said anything yet?" Kate asked her and watched her sit down on the edge of the bed.

"No, not so much as a peep." She wasn't really angry at him any longer. She was mostly just disappointed in him. And getting more and more disappointed the longer this silent treatment lasted.

Kate sat up to hug her. "I'm sorry, Lex. Maybe he's just been doing it for so long he doesn't know anything else."

"They're divorced. How could she still have Dad wrapped around her little finger this much?" Alexis didn't understand that part at all. "How do I unwrap him?"

"You're his daughter. He loves you. Even I know that much. If anyone can reach him, it's you. Maybe a different strategy is called for." Kate had an idea but it was drastic. Maybe even too much.

"Anything." Alexis searched Kate's eyes and waited.

Kate was quiet for a bit. "Give me a chance to work out the details. We need to do this when you have a day off though. You'll need to be there."

"Day after tomorrow is my next day off." Alexis had hope again.

"I'll be ready. Be ready to come into the Precinct when I tell you. And I need the number for Castle's lawyer. It would help if he's in on it as well." Kate watched her pull out her cell phone and show it to her. Kate immediately added him to her phone.

"Day after tomorrow. Pray this works and wakes him up. If not he's going to be furious with all three of us," Kate warned her.

Alexis was sitting in a coffee shop down the street. She didn't drink coffee and she still wasn't drinking coffee. Thankfully coffee wasn't the only thing they sold. She was waiting for Kate's text telling her she could come into the Precinct.

Rick was being escorted off the elevator, past Kate's old desk, past Javi and Kevin who watched his every step, and into an interrogation room. Ann opened the door then Roz shoved him inside and closed the door.

"He's here," Ann told Kate who already knew since she had watched most of it.

"Thanks, give him about twenty minutes and they'll need to go get Henry out of the lounge area and take him to interrogation, please," Kate asked her.

"You got it." Ann smiled at Javi and Kevin as she left to go talk with Henry. Something big was about to happen, she could feel it.

Kate watched as both Ann and Roz escorted Henry to the interrogation room. However, she didn't see them come back. Since she wanted to watch this she left her desk and saw that Javi and Kevin were missing. Opening the door to observation she found the place already a little on the full side. "Fine, but stay out of the way."

"Henry! What am I doing here?" Even better question was, "How did you know to come here?" He was certain Beckett was behind this so it was a good thing Henry was here. They could discuss how to have Beckett arrested for this.

"You better have a seat, Rick." Henry sat down and opened his briefcase. He was all set for this little play and he had a nice big part in it. He was so going to love this.

"What have I done now? It's all lies, by the way," Rick asserted and looked at the mirror he knew was one-way glass. He was betting Beckett was on the other side.

"Captain Beckett was kind enough to lend a hand," Henry began.

"I'll bet she was," Rick growled and looked at the mirror. Unfazed, Kate just stood there and watched.

"I've received several papers for three different plaintiffs. Each is requesting, well actually suing you for a sample of your DNA," Henry explained. Alexis had suggested more like six but had settled on three since none of them knew just how accurate the reports were in the papers. For all they knew this wasn't going to work at all, but everyone was betting that it would.

"DNA!? What do they need my DNA for?" Rick didn't understand.

"To determine if they should sue you for paternity. Apparently these three women all claim to have gotten pregnant by you. If their claim is verified by your DNA they'll have a case against you, to have you pay them likely hundreds if not thousands monthly until the child reaches the age of 18." Henry was loving this part especially.

"WHAT! That's not…I mean…I used a condom." Rick spoke very softly so that hopefully only Henry could hear him since there was no microphone or recording device on the table.

"Condoms are not 100% reliant, Rick. Even you know that. Or should. As I recall Derek Storm had a similar problem so you must have done research." This was the part the Henry had offered. He had read all of Rick's books and knew Derek Storm had a paternity scare. It was just a scare. Much like this one.

"Well yeah, but." Rick grabbed the papers and looked for names. "I don't even know any of these women."

"Did you even bother to ask them their names, Rick? Or did you just have sex with them? You are a renowned playboy, after all," Henry reminded him.

Kate pulled out her phone and sent a text.

That was all Alexis needed and she was up and running toward the Precinct and as per the signal the desk sergeant opened up and watched her race to the elevator.

Alexis had her arms crossed and was tapping her foot as she watched the number pass on this old thing until finally the doors opened and she flew to the interrogation room. Once there she stopped and composed herself. Her dad should already be flustered and hopefully in a panic. It was a real pity that she didn't have her grandmother's genes for this. This was going to be her best acting job ever.

"This will cost me thousands. They can't have my DNA; it's mine and they can't have it." Rick threw the papers at Henry.

"To do that you're going to need to hire a lawyer in each state to fight it. I'm only recognized in the State of New York. Oh and Jersey. And Pennsylvania and Connecticut and Maine. But that's all." Which was the truth actually. Or at least the truth as far as Rick might now it.

Rick was having a heart attack. Henry just being here was costing him money. Three more lawyers at, or over 500 dollars an hour would cost a fortune, let alone pay for three kids that might actually be his.

Then the door opened and he expected to see a smirking Beckett walk in. Be a part of this disgrace. But no, it wasn't her. "Alexis!" What the hell was she doing here?

"Henry called me. Gave me a heads up. One train ride and some running and here I am." She actually was huffing and puffing a little since she had sprinted all the way there from that coffee shop.

"Paternity?" Javi wasn't sure he believed it.

"If you four can't keep your mouths closed you can leave," Kate warned them. All four of them stood ramrod straight and silent after that.

"What have you done now, Dad? Naked on a horse in downtown New York? On a stolen Police horse?" Alexis naturally knew about that one.

"Borrowed," Rick pointed out.

"Borrowing anything suggests that the owner allowed you to borrow it. Since he hadn't and you were arrested, that means stealing, Dad. I'm only 18 and even I know that," Alexis insisted hotly. "And I'm not a writer or a lawyer."

Kate glared at her four to keep them silent. Not all of them knew about that.

"The charges were dropped." Rick had gotten out of that one because he had friends.

"See, stolen and not borrowed," Alexis argued since he had just admitted that he had stolen a Police horse. "So what is it this time?" She snatched the papers Rick had thrown back at Henry and actually read them. They looked pretty good to her. Henry had certainly done his job.

"PATERNITY! Really, Dad?" She wanted to and did sound disgusted with him because if they were real she was going to be very disgusted with him. "THREE! And each in different states!" Alexis held the papers close so Rick couldn't see them.

They all feared that Rick just might be smart enough to spot a phony if given enough time so she kept them out of his sight.

"Alexis." He wanted to say that it wasn't what it looked like. It was just that he'd had sex with women during his book tour. It hadn't been as bad as the papers made him out to be, but he had.

"Well thanks to Gina and Paula you're a male slut, Dad. Maybe they'll create a new name just for you," Alexis said and saw the look on her dad's face. He clearly hated that word. Problem was it fitted him.

"I…I…" It had all been in good fun. None of the women had complained about the sex. "It's not my DNA." It was all he had to work with. That was Kate's cue.

"Leave this room and you're fired. Talk while in the room and you're fired. Talk to anyone about this and you're fired," Kate warned all of them. She picked up something and headed for the interrogations door.

A quick knock and Kate opened it. "I have warrant that has been issued for Mr. Castle's DNA. He needs to be placed in holding until a doctor or qualified nurse arrives to collect the proper DNA. Come this way, Mr. Castle."

"Jeez, Dad." Alexis sounded even more disgusted with him.

Rick soon found himself in holding as Kate slammed the door closed and left him.
